Episode 283 showcases our hosts Dr Jake Sloane & David Segal. In our final podcast of the year we launch a new mini-series called 'The Entrepreneurs'. These episodes will focus on pioneers in the business world. Our entrepreneurs will share their stories of success, failure, life-changing lessons and big decisions that they made. We'll showcase guests from all sorts of backgrounds to inspire our listeners. In Chapter 1 David shares his journey in aesthetics from the very beginning. From starting importing lasers from China with absolutely no experience, a chance opportunity led to him founding and managing the hugely successful 'Cosmos Clinic'.  After another chance meeting at an event, he was then invited to become the General Manager of Laser Clinics Australia - now the world's biggest chain clinic with over 250 locations in numerous countries.  These early successes led David and his partners to set their sights on the surgical world. They founded 'The Cosmetic Institute' (TCI) and within just 2 years they had disrupted the entire cosmetic surgery industry in Australia. At its peak TCI performed 100 breast surgeries a week and was turning over $40 million per year. But things came unstuck and David gives us a brutally honest account of what the root causes of this were and the most difficult period of his life.   This experience changed his mindset completely and David offers his insights into best business practices, financial management, and the importance of risk mitigation. We end on a note about the importance of planning for financial stability and wealth management for the future.   00:00 Introduction and New Beginnings 01:09 Introducing 'The Entrepreneur Series' 03:51 The Topic of the Day: Business Failures and Lessons Learned 05:19 Early Career and Business Ventures 14:57 The Genesis of Cosmos Clinic 24:07 The Birth of Laser Clinics Australia 33:16 Reflecting on the Chain Clinic Model 35:06 The Genesis Of The Cosmetic Institute (TCI) 40:57 Recruitment and Training of Surgical Staff 43:02 Business Model and Initial Success 45:18 Challenges and Scrutiny 52:39 Major Complications and Media Attention 56:14 The Beginning of the End 01:01:53 Lessons Learned and Moving Forward 01:16:24 Advice for Aspiring Business Owners 01:21:46 Final Thoughts and Reflections   CLICK HERE TO JOIN OUR PATREON FOR ON DEMAND EDUCATION & SUPPORT CLICK HERE TO BROWSE OUR IA OFFERS FOR DISCOUNTS & SPECIALS CLICK HERE IF YOU'RE A BRAND OR COMPANY & WANT TO WORK WITH US CLICK HERE TO APPLY TO BE A GUEST ON OUR PODCAST JOIN OUR LISTENER WHATSAPP GROUP & SEND US YOUR COMMENTS, SUGGESTIONS OR JUST SAY HI! In this episode of Big Shot, we sit down with another legendary real estate developer, Larry Silverstein. Best known for the 99-year lease he signed for the World Trade Center, just six weeks before 9/11, Larry's story is one of persistence and strategic partnerships—and a whole lot of chutzpah. He shares with us today how he leveraged partnerships, refurbished properties on a shoestring budget and built a business that today is valued at over $10 billion. As with many successful Jewish entrepreneurs, family is at the center of it all, and Larry speaks with extreme gratitude about his children and wife Klara. You won't want to miss hearing about how Larry very narrowly missed being at ground zero during 9/11, and how his wife supported his efforts in rebuilding the World Trade Center.  If you'd like to apply to be an executive producer, please complete the form here https://shorturl.at/xLQUW In This Episode We Cover:  (03:19) How Larry got established in real estate with no money (09:59) Why Larry turned down a 100k profit on his first contract  (12:51) How Larry leveraged investors to land million-dollar properties (14:22) The low-budget, resourceful way Larry's team refurbished buildings (16:31) How Larry collaborated with competitors in purchasing 711 Fifth Avenue (24:42) Coca-Cola's purchase of 711 Fifth Avenue (26:43) Why Larry worked with partners (27:33) The beginning of Larry's journey toward buying the World Trade Center (35:22) How Silverstein Properties built their own electric plant  (45:28) The drama of signing Salomon Brothers  (52:44) Larry's accident and acquiring the World Trade Center (58:45) Why Larry was absent from the building on 9/11  (1:00:20) How Larry decided to rebuild the World Trade Center (1:04:21) When Larry knew he made it (1:06:28) Larry's philanthropic efforts paying the tuition of medical school students — Referenced:  Harry Helmsley: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_Helmsley 711 Fifth Avenue Purchased from Columbia Pictures: https://www.nytimes.com/1978/04/23/archives/realty-news-fifth-avenue-third-avenue-executives-named.html George Kaufman's obituary: https://www.nytimes.com/2018/02/26/obituaries/george-s-kaufman-who-revived-astoria-studios-dies-at-89.html Peter Feinberg obituary: https://www.nytimes.com/1990/03/15/obituaries/peter-i-feinberg-79-real-estate-developer.html Port Authority to lease World Trade Center to Silverstein Properties: https://www.panynj.gov/port-authority/en/press-room/press-release-archives/2001_press_releases/port_authority_toleaseworldtradecentertosilversteinpropertiesinc.html World Trade Center history: https://www.911memorial.org/learn/resources/digital-exhibitions/world-trade-center-history Ed Koch: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ed_Koch Salomon Brothers: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salomon_Brothers Mortimer Zuckerman: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mortimer_Zuckerman Salomon Will Move to the World Trade Center: https://www.nytimes.com/1988/11/29/nyregion/salomon-will-move-to-trade-center.html The Collapse of Drexel Burnham Lambert: https://www.nytimes.com/1990/02/14/business/the-collapse-of-drexel-burnham-lambert-key-events-for-drexel-burnham-lambert.html NYU School of Medicine Offers Full-Tuition Scholarships to All New & Current Medical Students: https://nyulangone.org/news/nyu-school-medicine-offers-full-tuition-scholarships-all-new-current-medical-students — Where to find Larry Silverstein:  Silverstein Properties: https://www.silversteinproperties.com/ The Rising: The Twenty-Year Battle to Rebuild the World Trade Center: https://www.amazon.com/Rising-Twenty-Year-Battle-Rebuild-Center/dp/0525658963 Where To Find Big Shot:  Website: https://www.bigshot.show/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@bigshotpodcast   TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@bigshotshow    Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/bigshotshow/   Harley Finkelstein: https://twitter.com/harleyf  David Segal: https://twitter.com/tea_maverick Production and Marketing: https://penname.co

Gladiators in the Colosseum. Sideshow performers. Reality television. We've always loved to gawk at the misery or majesty of others. But this week, we ask the question: What's it like when the tables are turned and all eyes are on you? Prologue: Ira talks to Joel Gold, a psychologist and author, about a strangely common delusion known as the "Truman Show Delusion," in which patients believe that they are being filmed, 24/7, for a national reality television program. (6 minutes)Act One: Producer Stephanie Foo speaks to Nasubi, a Japanese comedian who, in the 90s, just wanted a little bit of fame. So he was thrilled when he won an opportunity to have his own segment on a Japanese reality TV show. Until he found out the premise: he had to sit in an empty apartment with no food, clothes or contact with the outside world, enter sweepstakes from magazines… and hope that he won enough sustenance to survive. (23 minutes)Act Two: Writer Ariel Sabar tells the story of Roger Barker, a psychologist who believed that humans should be studied outside the lab. So Barker dispatched an army of graduate students to follow the children of Oskaloosa, Kansas, and write down every single thing they did. Sabar wrote a book - a Kindle Single - about Roger Barker, called "The Outsider." (8 1/2 minutes)Act Three: Charlie Brill and Mitzi McCall were a comedy duo back in the mid-1960s, playing clubs around Los Angeles, when their agent called to tell them he'd landed them the gig of a lifetime: They were going to be on The Ed Sullivan Show. The only problem was that their performance was a total fiasco, for a bunch of reasons, including one they never saw coming. David Segal reports. Liberace was many things. He was a talented pianist. A singer. A showman. He was also… a messy bitch. So buckle up, folks! His struggles as a closeted gay man in Hollywood will have you feeling terrible for him. But his late-in-life relationship with a teenager will have you feeling terrible *about* him. Then Brandi tells us about a terrible man with an adorable name. When Christina Karlsen died in a house fire, investigators wondered if her husband, Karl Karlsen, might have had something to do with it. He'd managed to rescue their three children. Why not Christina? And was it a coincidence that the fire had started right outside the bathroom, where Christina was taking a bath?  And now for a note about our process. For each episode, Kristin reads a bunch of articles, then spits them back out in her very limited vocabulary. Brandi copies and pastes from the best sources on the web. And sometimes Wikipedia.
