To kick off this special collaborative podcast project, we've got a conversation with two undeniable pillars of the adaptive climbing community, Ronnie Dickson, and Maureen, better known as Mo, Beck. We're talking about the annual Adaptive Climbers Festival. The festival was started by a whole rowdy crew of climbers and allies -- Ronnie and Mo being two of them.    Ronnie is based out of Chattanooga and leads the group, Prosthetic and Orthotic Associates of Tennessee specializing in custom prosthetics. He was also the first American above the knee amputee to send a V10 and climb 5.13c.    Mo has served as an athlete ambassador or representative for organizations including with the American Alpine Club, USA Climbing, and Paradox Sports. She was also named National Geographic's "Adventurer of the Year" in 2019.   Host, Emily Chen-Newton produced a documentary style segment about the Adaptive Climbers Festival in 2023 for the show, Inside Appalachia. Life doesn't follow a clean and cut narrative arc — unlike the stories we tell. Sure, it might all start and end the same way for folks, but it's the complex, messy middle that makes us, us. One of our tendencies with storytelling is to simplify, which means skimming over a lot of the details. But when we do that we might find the narrative doesn't actually work, it's not really who we are.Luckily, we can rewrite it. Narrative is a choice. In today's episode, we talk with Shane Farver, an adaptive climber, writer, former journalism instructor, and now Director of Marketing & Communications based in Utah. After a climbing gym accident in 2018, Shane found the story he was telling himself — and others — needed a revision. Since then, he has embraced the problem-solving aspect of climbing and pursued the sport he loves while continually adapting his body through techniques and accessories. We talk about what makes ice climbing particularly accessible for adaptive athletes, how to ask “how”, and what it means to belong in the outdoors on your own terms. Resources and links:If you'd like to connect with Shane, his Instagram handle is @sfarver01. He does a lot of work with the Adaptive Climbing program at The Front if you happen to find yourself in Salt Lake City, and he's also just down the street from the new location of The Scratch Pad. This winter, he'll be at a few upcoming ice fests.Paradox Sports is the leader in the adaptive climbing space and definitely worth checking out.For more stories with adaptive ice climbers, here is a podcast interview with Kimber Cross and here is a recent video featuring Mo Beck.If you'd like to go out with an adaptive ice climbing guide, consider Santi Vega, a full-time mountain guide in the Wasatch and Uinta mountains of Utah.Find the rest of the notes, timestamps, resources, and more on the episode page.  Credits:Episode cover photo by Maureen Beck.Intro music by Hannah Noelle Enomoto (thanks, sis!). Sponsors:Big thanks to our sponsor, Blue Ice, for supporting this show!Blue Ice: Blue Ice is the best kind of ice, and also my choice when it comes to fast and light ice climbing gear. Their Aero Lites go in like a hot knife through butter and their climbing packs hit the sweet spot between function and lightweight. Designed to get to the point in the alpine, their gear is tested by mountain professionals between the Alps and the Wasatch. If there is one thing you can say about this show, it's that we are the most fair and balanced climbing podcast in the world. Following last episode's discussion about Yosemite's proposed overnight permits for big-wall climbers, we are speaking to two guests from the opposite side of the debate: Jesse McGahey is Yosemite National Park's head climbing ranger. And Timmy O'Neill is a longtime professional athlete, founder of Paradox Sports, and board member of the Yosemite Climbing Association. Our discussion over this important rule-change proposal continues. But first, we muse about the art of the sandbag. When is it totes aprops to hose your friend, and when is it just downright cruel? And what does it say about YOU when you're the only climber not getting sandbagged by your peers? Here's the short version: once you create an emotional connection, it becomes a no-brainer to ask your audience to help share your organization's mission with their networks. Dave and I also discussed an opportunity for which Paradox is particularly well-positioned: using a company called Tapkat to promote sweepstakes to their corporate partnerships' mailing lists. Tapkat (https://tapkat.com) helps nonprofits drive revenue through sweepstakes—and those who can access partnership assets can see gains by using this service. Check out this episode for some great insights. Host Corey Reed and co-host Michael Maina tell the story about one of their favorite adventures together. With limited climbing experience they teamed up with Paradox Sports, which is a non profit organization that serves individuals with physical disabilities rock climbing and ice climbing, to attempt a multi-pitch climb in the famed Yosemite Valley. They talk about the challenges associated with Corey being a blind amputee climber, Mike capturing it on film, what their training looked like leading up to it, and one of the most nerve-racking moments Corey has ever had in the mountains that went down on the fourth pitch of the climb. As a bonus checkout the video clip of the multi-pitch climb on the Mountain Wellness Youtube channel. https://youtu.be/QOmZFoGCW9w

Our hosts, Jeff and Erik, sat down with Timmy at our studio in Golden to catch up. He was in town to train with Erik for their upcoming expedition to climb Ama Dablam, a beautiful peak in Nepal. Timmy, Erik, and Jeff have been friends for many years and know Timmy not just as a wild speed climber but as a thoughtful philosopher of sorts who has dedicated a large portion of his life to giving back both through his nonprofit, Paradox Sports, and his work with Cure Blindness in Africa. Timmy talks about his quest to live in the now and to find meaning in all of his pursuits. He works with folks who are in the midst of challenge; whether they are physically disabled and part of Paradox Sports, or are taking part in one of his leadership seminars, and he has learned many lessons along the way. A brief background on Timmy:Hailing from Philadelphia, Timmy O’Neill left after one semester of college to head out and design a life for himself. He quickly became known as the “Urban Ape," scaling buildings around the country, like the Chicago Tribune Tower, without any ropes. Now, he’s a seasoned Patagonia-sponsored climber with a lengthy and impressive resume that includes setting world speed climbing records in Yosemite, and first ascents around the world in Venezuela, Patagonia, Pakistan and Greenland. Timmy is also a world class slack liner, mountain biker and kayaker and recently guided completely blind kayaker, Lonnie Bedwell, down the Zambezi, a class V River. Outside of his athletic achievements, Timmy is always giving back. He co-founded Paradox Sports, a national nonprofit dedicated to providing inspiration, opportunities and adaptive equipment to the disabled community and provides ophthalmic surgical care in Africa as part of the organization, Cure Blindness, along with Dr. Geoff Tabin. Timmy's vitality and zest for life continues to inspire others as he pushes on to live a life of meaning. Follow Timmy on InstagramCheck out his Facebook and give him a like.Read more about Paradox Sports and Cure Blindness

Welcome to Beyond the Breach. A new series about how individuals and organizations manage change – with a focus on technology’s impact on humanity and the nature of cybersecurity risk. The show is hosted by Jonathan Reiber, a writer and security strategist who served as a Speechwriter and Chief Strategy Officer for Cyber Policy in the Obama Defense Department, and co-hosted by D.J. Skelton, a combat veteran, retired Army officer, founder of Paradox Sports, and outdoorsman. In each episode we explore lessons from public service and the past to inform the leadership and management challenges of our digital present. We also talk about life in the outdoors -- the trips we and our guests have made into the wilderness, the places we've walked and seen, and the trips we will take in the future. Our goal: help humanity to adapt and flourish in the digital age. In each episode we interview leaders to learn about their journeys and how they’ve helped society manage cybersecurity risk. We draw on our experience helping to run large bureaucracies and forming policy, leading men and women on the battlefield, and on the leadership lessons we’ve learned in the public and private sector. Stories are important to us. What are the stories you've learned about managing security, for yourself and your organizations? We want to hear them. Substantively, our first season looks at change management through a series of nine analytic frames. In our first episode, “cognition” we explore the psychological reasons for why humanity responds to short-term threats like terrorism but struggles to respond to longer-term threats like climate change and cybersecurity. Jonathan interviews Jason Healey at Columbia’s School of Public and International Affairs about steps we all can take in the future. In “transition” DJ and Jonathan talk about the role of the outdoors in helping leaders manage change and reset their thinking, and the importance of building a “strategic habit” for managing risk and building teams. In “projection” we interview Jesse Goldhammer about the role of scenario planning and long-term strategic thinking in operational planning. In “narration” Jen Easterly speaks with us about the power of storytelling in helping society adapt to cybersecurity risks. For “proliferation” we speak with Richard Danzig and Kara Frederick about the growth of emerging technologies and weapons proliferation on the world stage and the risks cyberspace technologies post to liberal democracies and what to do about it. Future episodes this season will focus on regulation and risk, the foundation of America’s emergency services for cybersecurity crisis response, the precondition of trust in complex cybersecurity operations, and the necessity of execution skills for leadership. Addressing major technological change is not easy – we need to build institutions, laws, and safety measures to prevent risk. But that’s what we’re about. You will definitely learn things. But above all, we want this show to delight you. Our encounter with technology is a story of creativity, optimism, and resilience. So give us a listen. Let us know what you think; send us your stories. You can follow us on twitter @jonathanreiber @dj_skelton, LinkedIn, and Instagram @jonathanlkreiber @dj_skelton77. The show is brought to you by Illumio, which delivers adaptive security for every computing environment, protecting the 80 percent of data center and cloud traffic missed by the perimeter. The team in repose, Emmett squatting on the left and Maureen standing in the center. Maybe you've seen the award-winning film, Stumped, which introduced much of the world to adaptive climber Maureen Beck. Maybe you know that her trophy room includes numerous national titles and world championships. Perchance you've heard that National Geographic named Mo this year's incredibly prestigious Adventurer of the Year. You probably know that she's accomplished this all while being born without a left hand. You might not know that she chairs USA Climbing's Paraclimbing Committee or that she works diligently with Paradox Sports and the Front Range Adaptive Climbers Club. She was also responsible for the petition which tore across social media a couple weeks ago, responding to the IFSC decision to split the para- and able-bodied World Championships. Let me also notify you that, when properly motivated, she can drink whiskey like a cross-eyed sailor on leave. She'd hate me writing this, but Mo is a fighter and a hero for our sport and it's wide-breadth of athletes. She'd be okay with me telling you that she once punched a little boy in the nether-regions with a robot hand (she was also a little girl; I'm fairly certain she no longer punches boys in the junk). Emmett Cookson ran a winding road from Division I college cross country to the world of competition climbing and coaching. After cutting his teeth with Justin Sjong, Emmett began coaching Mo and was eventually named USAC's Paraclimbing Head Coach. Although he still doesn't know how to take a compliment, Emmett is one of the finest young coaches in the United States, expertly co-mingling pummeling workouts and good-natured ribbing with a stolid belief that his athletes can achieve far more than they imagine. He doesn't like it when Mo eats cupcakes. He's not sure she should pound beers with a paraclimbing team that sometimes resembles Animal House more than a squad of elite adaptive climbers. Luckily, he knows when to leave the room when a post-competition round of "tequila pong" cranks on late into the night. He'll be ready for the bleary-eyed champs in the morning... It was a unique honor and pleasure for Fidi and I to sit down with these two. I believe the young folks call the following episode a "banger." Enjoy.
