Hobbs Kessler is a 21-year-old professional runner who ran a 3:34 in the 1500m in his senior year of high school. He has also climbed as hard as 5.14c with an ascent of Southern Smoke in the Red River Gorge. Hobbs just returned from the Paris Olympics, where he competed in both the 800 and 1500m races. But first, your curmudgeonly hosts roll their eyes at one of climbing's most bitter personas: the climbing curmudgeon. It's like we're looking in the mirror! Today's final bit is a mother-daughter violin performance of the Appalachian Waltz. The musicians behind this composition are my good friend Kate McGinnis, a nurse from Atlanta who is one of the most talented and strong climbers I've ever met, and her 13 year old daughter Annie, who is crushing rock climbs just like her mom. Jesse Dufton was born with a condition in which the light-sensing cells of his retina gradually deteriorated. This did not stop him from climbing with his family – bouldering by age 2, securing his own ropes by 5. When Dufton went to public school and then university, he downplayed his vision problems as he became a better climber. Then he met Molly Thompson, who took note of his long hair that made him look like a mature student. The two grew closer and often climbed together. But even as the couple was falling in love, Dufton was losing all of his sight. Dufton and Thompson had to invent new ways of communicating to continue their love of climbing. This story was written and read by Kevin Sieff. Audio production and original music composition by Bishop Sand.

This week's podcast features an exhilarating conversation with Mike Rowley, an avid rock climber turned elk hunting enthusiast with a story that defies belief. Having spent five years living in a van and traversing the country, Mike's journey into elk hunting was ignited by what he describes as unconventional encounters with the elk gods. Drawn by fate to one of New Mexico's most sought-after tags, Mike immersed himself in the world of elk hunting, relocating his mobile abode to the nearest town and embarking on extensive shed hunting expeditions throughout the summer. Teaming up with a seasoned guide, Mike seized the opportunity to hunt both first and second seasons, embarking on an epic month-long quest filled with exhilarating highs and daunting challenges. From heart-pounding encounters with majestic bulls to navigating the rugged terrain of the hunting unit, Mike's inaugural elk hunting experience was nothing short of unforgettable. However, it was on the 21st day, amidst a backdrop of bustling hunting activity, that Mike's patience and perseverance bore fruit in the form of a monumental encounter. What started as a quest for a "good bull" culminated in an electrifying face-to-face encounter with a bull of legendary proportions, culminating in a triumphant harvest that exceeded all expectations. Warning: Listening to this podcast may induce an intense surge of excitement and anticipation for the upcoming hunting season, even in the depths of winter. Tune in and prepare to be inspired by Mike's extraordinary journey from van-dwelling rock climber to seasoned elk hunter extraordinaire.

Kyra Condie is a professional rock climber who had a spinal fusion as a teen to stop a rapidly progressing scoliosis curve. On this episode, Kyra discusses what it was like to have scoliosis progress to needing surgery when her climbing career was starting to take off. Fast forward to the Tokyo Olympics and Kyra is the first athlete to compete in the Olympic Games with a spinal fusion. She shares a great story about the first surgeon she went to telling her that climbing wasn't going to be a big part of her life, so she should just not worry about it. She ended up having a second opinion from a surgeon who took her goals into account when doing the surgery. One of the huge takeaways from this episode is to advocate for yourself...even if you are a teenager discussing with your parents. If you are looking at surgery for scoliosis, Kyra also recommends getting a second, and maybe even a third, opinion. You can find out more about Kyra's journey and story by following her on Instagram: @Kyra_condie or on her website: www.kyracondie.com Kyra continues to do some awesome things in climbing, so watch for her on the world stage. She was also such a cool person to get to know on this podcast. Thanks Kyra!
In this episode, we sit down with Favia Dubyk, a professional rock climber, physician, cancer survivor, and American Ninja Warrior contestant. Growing up below the Mason Dixon Line, Favia didn't discover her passion for the outdoors until med school. It was during a family visit that she stumbled upon rock climbing, and quickly fell in love with the sport. However, a couple of years into med school, Favia was diagnosed with cancer. But she refused to let that stop her. The fight to beat cancer gave her a new perspective on life and inspired her to become a pathologist. She also returned to rock climbing and received a call from American Ninja Warrior, which led her to compete on the show. Now, Favia spends her time traveling, competing, and practicing pathology. Join us as we discuss Favia's inspiring journey, why it's important to never give up on your calling, and why saying yes to everything can lead to unexpected opportunities. The independent film festival Dances with Films is underway and we had the pleasure of watching one of the festival's feature documentaries Rewilding. Rewilding follows Anthony Dejesus, a 27-year-old budding artist and former Rikers Island inmate, as he leaves New York City for the first time with avid rock climbers and wilderness guides Jesse Spiegel and Vitek Linhart, determined to field test a program to take formerly incarcerated men into the wild. The documentary pushes all participants in ways they never imagined and also opens them up to hard conversations with each other and themselves as they travel in a van for 7 weeks around the country. We had on one of the rock climbing leaders who also was the planner of much of the road trip - Vitek Linhart as well as the participant, all the way from the Bronx, Anthony Dejesus. We talked with the duo about the word privilege and what it meant to them before and after the film was finished, pet therapy, how the discussion of race is at the forefront of this film, and more. Rewilding is a thought piece film. Even while you watch the hardest parts of the test program and how it unfolds, we hope this inspires more adventures that push conversations about race and privilege and what it means to be a brown or black person in nature spaces. If you're in the LA area on June 19, head to the world premiere of this special film. We're whole heartedly rooting for these guys. --Grab your ticket to the world premiere of Rewilding HEREFollow Rewilding on IG, FB, and their website--Thanks for listening and for your support! Their goal is to deliver legendary biologist and National Geographic Explorer Bruce Means to the top of a massive “island in the sky” known as a tepui. The team must first trek miles of treacherous jungle terrain to help Dr. Means complete his life's work, searching the cliff wall for undiscovered animal species. The one-hour special is the newest installment of National Geographic's long-running "Explorer” series. Emily Korth is an artist and climber who has spent the greater part of a decade living out of vehicles and traveling in pursuit of fulfillment. You can most likely find her climbing in Rifle Canyon, hiking in the Colorado Rockies, or dancing by a fire. Emily has a BFA in Ceramics and photography and is a very talented artist. Check out her art @bkcompositions We spent a lot of time camping and climbing together in Rifle Canyon in the summer of 2021. During this time we became close friends. Emily can be hard to get a hold of, identifies herself as an introvert and finds joy in solitude. She is one of the women in my life who have taught me to tap into my needs and be more unapologetic. One thing I truly appreciate about our friendship is that we can allow each to be who we are without any feeling of guilt. Sometimes people mistake selfcare for being selfish or inconsiderate, when really selfcare is the best thing we can do to nurture ourselves and our relationships. This is how we fill our tank and are able to give back. In our conversation, we talk about the discomfort that can come along with being alone, the challenges of being an introvert versus an extrovert and how every person's needs are different when finding that perfect in between. Wouldn't it be nice if we never felt like we had to explain ourselves when leaving a party, not joining a family reunion or saying ‘No' to something that does not feel right? It takes trust to do what we need to do without feeling guilt or shame. We best know our needs. But in order to listen, we first must hear, and that requires stillness. So: When in doubt, do nothing.
