Today is about all things training for dry-tooling with Eli Ellis.Eli is a dry-tooler, coach, and professional slackliner who specializes in highlinemo, a discipline that combines slacklining at high altitudes and mountaineering. For those familiar with the conjunction "skimo", you'll see where "highlinemo" comes from.To establish ever higher lines, Eli began ice climbing and dry-tooling. Naturally he got hooked. And within two years he was climbing M10. In this episode, we dive into Eli's training that allowed him to progress so quickly, which in part, starts with him climbing, essentially, since childhood. But there's more to it... Resources and links:Get a peak into the "First Across" of Hal Latte, Eli's highline at 3,290m in the Colorado Rockies. Here he is sending Rambo II (D10-) in Merano, Italy. Wade Desai is the Director of Climbing at ASCEND in the Pittsburgh area. As you'll hear, he certainly loves climbing, but he's also passionate about slacklining and accomplished at it too. Since starting at ASCEND in 2017, he's seen slacklining take off as a programming offering and has been helping lead the charge. Could more climbing gyms offer slacklining? And if so, what are some of the steps that a gym should take to get a slacklining program started? Those questions guide today's conversation, and we'll also hear more about Desai's fascinating transition from a doctor in the medical field to a director in the climbing gym industry. Our host is John Burgman with music by Devin Dabney, and sponsors Strati and EP Climbing.

Today on episode 61 I'm pleased to welcome Heather Larsen, pro slackliner and climber and lover of southern Utah's desert heat. What is probably less known about Heather is that, following humble beginnings, she graduated at the height of the Great Recession with a double major in finance and economics. In the intervening years, she struggled greatly to find work in her field, even competing for bank teller jobs with 20-year finance veterans. Out west she found work in seasonal park service positions, growing more and more fond of the outdoors, eventually discovering climbing and slacklining.Heather could have easily fallen into a mindset of defeat. But with persistence, she was eventually able to secure a career in financial reporting, enabling her preferred lifestyle balance of elite outdoor adventure and self-made financial security. Key Points, Top Takeaways, and Memorable Quotes“So I'm really thankful that they just kept pushing me through the little things and teaching me all the details and the styles that could come with the game.” 4:00“It was hard, it was hard, to leave a team that you gave everything to, but I knew that there was something more for me out there, and this opportunity came across, and I wanted to take it.” 9:04“Now I just know for the future that I can't let anything pass by without seeing it as an opportunity.” 10:20“We were all very good talkers, but when it came to listening, that was eye-opening kinda to see that even if everyone was very vocal, it's about kind of who can listen too.” 12:21“I feel like if it was supposed to happen, it would've. And for some reason, we have to take a different message from this now, and I hope that even though it wasn't me to be there for the win, I hope it's for the team, later on, they get it for next year, the next two years, next three years, I just hope those girls learned what that feeling felt like, and they just take it and generate more of it for next year.” 15:48“I want to be a coach one day too like I want to coach college, so for some reason, I feel like this happened to be a better mentor to girls to like that this happens to or if they feel like in this situation, I know better things to say or better ways how to act.” 18:59“Making small goals on a daily basis leads to those big goals.” 20:38“Our path is just completely already made, and we're just walking it. So if you walk it the best you can and you're doing that, then you are completing your life, and it's just going to come out in the end, I think.” 21:20“We always do this thing where you say three things to yourself in the morning, and then you say those six things in the afternoon, and repeat nine times at night to try to manifest those moments and put it in the earth and receive it back, so I guess every morning I try to pick what I want to be that day.” 26:20“I think that day for the UCLA matches I said, “I will be humble.” 27:03“If I need to communicate what I need, someone will help me. I just have to be like, have the courage to say it and be confident in what I'm saying and believe what I'm saying for someone to see me as me and help what I wanted and what I needed.” 34:18“The more you get rejected, I guess, the less it hurts.” 36:09“The piece of advice I think would be just really know who you are as a person and whatever you're doing, just make sure that you wholeheartedly love everything that you are doing. If it's volleyball, if it's school, if it's your job, just make sure you love it because if you rely on anybody else to love it for you, or have expectations to do things for anyone else, then I think you will fall short every time. If it's not for you if you're losing the love, it's ok to reconnect with yourself through other things and to find a new love somewhere else or to keep working through it, but just don't force anything.” 52:02 Guest Bio - From Fort Lauderdale, FL! Went to St. Thomas Aquinas High School! Then got my bachelors in psychology from Tulane University, Got a masters in kinesiology also at Tulane. Then I transferred to TCU for my 6th year! I am currently getting a master's in liberal arts!I come from a volleyball family! My mother played for UCF and won the national title in 1978, and my dad played professionally in Puerto Rico. My brothers either played beach or indoor. My dad even built an indoor and beach club for my brothers, then a girl's volleyball program for me. I played indoor and beach volleyball all four years at Tulane. My covid year happened, which gave me another year of eligibility for beach, which I played at TCU! Some accomplishments :2018 Beach All American holds AAC conference record for most aces in a season for indoor (2018) All freshman team for Beach Named all tournament team for conference with year with TCU beach I really enjoy longboarding and slacklining. I think it is important to enjoy outside time besides playing beach volleyball! I love coaching as well, I hope to pursue a college coaching job for indoor or beach volleyball! (Evan - Slacklining) In this episode, I had the honour to have Evan as my guest. He shared with me his interest in slacklining as his hobby. Definition: Slacklining refers to the act of walking, running or balancing along a suspended length of flat webbing that is tensioned between two anchors. Slacklining is similar to slack rope walking and tightrope walking. Slacklines differ from tightwires and tightropes in the type of material used and the amount of tension applied during use. Slacklines are tensioned significantly less than tightropes or tightwires in order to create a dynamic line which will stretch and bounce like a long and narrow trampoline. This week on The Roe Show, I sit down with Mickey Wilson, veteran Slackline expert and extreme athlete. We discuss the sport and how to learn it, the equipment used and how to compete. He has some alarming stories and some great insights as well. Towards the end we talk about the future of this niche sport and compare it to some of the more classical sports. We have a look into the pros and cons of each sport, traditional versus freestyle, so if you're looking to learn about another great freestyle sport, this is the podcast for you. I first met Mickey a few years ago when we were performing for a client in the middle east and he even tried to teach me to slackline! Mickey has competed at numerous slackline competitions since 2011 and is currently ranked 11th in world in tricklining by the World Slackline Federation. He landed the first ever double backflip dismount, and was the first to land a backflip to chest bounce in competition. He was also the second person to land a 'Luke Skywalker' on a highline. His longest slackline send stands at 500 feet (152 m) and his longest highline send is 230 feet (70 m on sight!). Mickey is also an avid skier, whitewater kayaker and climber. He has his skydiving "A" license and he plans to work toward base jumping and eventually base jumping from highlines! Mickey was also called a hero when he rescued a man caught hanging from his neck by his backpack in a ski lift accident in 2017. The man almost certainly would have died were it not for the heroics of Mickey, who appeared on 'The Ellen DeGeneres Show,' in 2017 to talk about the daring rescue. In this episode of the podcast, I welcome my soul brother Jim Galli! In this episode, Jim shares his life story from being born in France to moving to the United States at a young age. He shares his love for skateboarding and how that translated into an eventual love for slacklining. We riff on slacklife, giving back with the slackline, it's availability to everyone, and an exploration of what's possible. Jim shares the challenges and fears that have arisen for him with the sport and the positivity it has also brought into his life. In my opinion, the worst part of this podcast is that it's not long enough. With that being said, Jim will be back on the podcast soon enough and without further ado, Jim Galli everyone. Thank you to all that have invested their hard earned money into me for Fit For Service this year. It's a game changer and is already starting to level me up two weeks into the program. Special thanks this week to Isaac Peters, Stephanie Albright, and Samuel Cohen for your donations! If you would like to donate, the GoFundMe link can be found on my linktree in the Instagram bio or just DM me and I'll send it to you directly.

On Tuesday 19th May, I handed over the Seize Your Adventure Instagram account to Cath Shanks, a skate coach who was diagnosed with temporal lobe epilepsy in 2010. In this bonus episode, you get to hear how it went, and listen to the Instagram Live interview we had afterwards. I've only discovered Cath recently, and her account @specialeptic is still new. But the account is a mix of great fun and heart-breakingly honest: "SOME DAYS.... some days are harder than others. some days are that little bit darker. some days it’s not even the seizures that are the problem. some days I think I’d rather have seizures than take meds. some days it’s just a little bit too much to cope with. some days I can pull myself out of the rut, some days I can’t. some days Epilepsy sucks WAY MORE than others. some days I just wish I had a different brain. some days, like today." Cath has also been learning to slackline during lockdown. Which is just so cool. You can see some of her progress on her YouTube channel. Cath talks about: Her cocktail of epileptic seizures Learning to skateboard as an adult Why an all-woman skateboarding lesson was perfect for her Having a seizure whilst teaching at summer camp How she got a job teaching skateboarding The comfort she has found in the epilepsy community Doing jigsaws in lockdown And more... Scott Balcom, father of the Highline discusses the early days of Slacklining and how a rock climbing pastime has evolved into a worldwide movement and Community. Scott shares the wonders of the records being set in the sport and the use of slackline as a potent personal awareness practice.
You might be familiar with slacklining as the art of balancing and walking on what looks like a thin string between two anchor points, but it can actually involve much more than that, such as sitting, kneeling, laying down, backbending, side planking, squatting, and every move you might associate with yoga. How is that even possible? The answer might best be answered by yoga and slacklining teacher, Dustin Lindblad. She joins the podcast today to discuss how she became involved in slacklining, the myriad benefits she's gained from slacklining, and why it's not as esoteric or impossible as it might initially seem. In fact, most people who have a true desire to master it, can. Tune in to discover: Why it's important to be mindful of your breathing and how relaxed your body is while slacklining What type of shoes Dustin Lindblad finds most helpful when slacklining How to get started as a total beginner
Our hosts, Jeff and Erik, sat down with Timmy at our studio in Golden to catch up. He was in town to train with Erik for their upcoming expedition to climb Ama Dablam, a beautiful peak in Nepal. Timmy, Erik, and Jeff have been friends for many years and know Timmy not just as a wild speed climber but as a thoughtful philosopher of sorts who has dedicated a large portion of his life to giving back both through his nonprofit, Paradox Sports, and his work with Cure Blindness in Africa. Timmy talks about his quest to live in the now and to find meaning in all of his pursuits. He works with folks who are in the midst of challenge; whether they are physically disabled and part of Paradox Sports, or are taking part in one of his leadership seminars, and he has learned many lessons along the way. A brief background on Timmy:Hailing from Philadelphia, Timmy O’Neill left after one semester of college to head out and design a life for himself. He quickly became known as the “Urban Ape," scaling buildings around the country, like the Chicago Tribune Tower, without any ropes. Now, he’s a seasoned Patagonia-sponsored climber with a lengthy and impressive resume that includes setting world speed climbing records in Yosemite, and first ascents around the world in Venezuela, Patagonia, Pakistan and Greenland. Timmy is also a world class slack liner, mountain biker and kayaker and recently guided completely blind kayaker, Lonnie Bedwell, down the Zambezi, a class V River. Outside of his athletic achievements, Timmy is always giving back. He co-founded Paradox Sports, a national nonprofit dedicated to providing inspiration, opportunities and adaptive equipment to the disabled community and provides ophthalmic surgical care in Africa as part of the organization, Cure Blindness, along with Dr. Geoff Tabin. Timmy's vitality and zest for life continues to inspire others as he pushes on to live a life of meaning. In our previous episode, we shared the story of Sonya Iverson, a slacklining and highlining enthusiast who shared how these related sports have helped her succeed in life beyond the line. In part two of this two-part story, Sonya shares how her passion for slacklining has compelled her to start an organization that she believes can change the world by helping refugees and connecting and empowering people through the sport of slacklining.
To some, slacklining, along with its cousin highlining, is nothing more than an extreme and dangerous sport. But to Sonya Iverson, a geneticist by training, slacklining is a passion and a path to overcoming more than just a fear of heights. In part one of this two-part story, hear Sonya explain the sport of slacklining and how it has helped her succeed in life beyond the strip of webbing.
