#116: Climb Better TODAY! 15 In-Season Tips to Level Up Now!

Eric Hörst's Training For Climbing Podcast

Coach Hörst shares 15 game-changing tips to elevate your climbing this season. Performance gains aren't made solely in the gym. As Coach Hörst explains, there's a lot you can do in-season—technically, tactically, and nutritionally—to level up your outdoor climbing. Apply just a few of these strategies today, and you might send your project sooner than expected. Put most or all into practice over the coming weeks, and you could unlock a whole new level of performance this season! RUNDOWN 0:30 – Introduction: Why these 15 tips matter for your in-season performance. 2:20 – Tip #1: Know the context of your current training and climbing—and act accordingly. 5:08 – Tip #2: Dial in your warm-up to match the demands of your project. (Not all warm-ups are created equal!) 8:40 – Tip #3: Time your sends by planning around temperature trends and sun exposure. 10:35 – Tip #4: Build confidence by climbing routes that match your natural style. 12:35 – Tip #5: Occasionally work "anti-style" routes to promote long-term growth and mastery. 15:35 – Tip #6: Always bring two pairs of shoes: a comfortable pair for warming up and a performance pair for sending. 18:20 – Tip #7: Prioritize movement efficiency when projecting. Climb smart with the strength and skills you have today. 24:15 – Tip #8: Focus on making a few high-quality efforts per session—not just maxing out your goes. 27:55 – Tip #9: Recover faster between attempts with active recovery techniques. 31:28 – Tip #10: Don't climb to exhaustion. End your session before mental and physical fatigue sabotages your efforts—and recovery.

Send us a textTrail running defies easy categorization, and Jane Maus embodies this truth perfectly. From soccer fields to technical mountain ridges, Jane's athletic journey has been anything but conventional. In this revealing conversation, she takes us behind the scenes of her recent Black Canyon 100K experience, where stomach issues forced her to drop at mile 46 despite running alongside the elite women. Jane doesn't just race trails—she lives them. After relocating to Boulder from Salt Lake City, she now shares a house at 8,500 feet with professional runners Johnny Luna-Lima, Bailey Kowalczyk, and Chris Myers. This immersive environment has transformed her training, though she admits the intensity can be overwhelming. "Everything is running-focused," she explains, which proves beneficial when healthy but challenging during injuries or downtime. What sets Jane apart is her identity as a mountain athlete first and runner second. Her climbing background and comfort on technical terrain have shaped her racing success, most notably at last year's A-Basin Cirque Series where she took the overall women's win against a stacked field. That performance caught industry attention and ultimately led to her partnership with La Sportiva—a connection she initiated herself by reaching out directly. As a registered dietitian now working alongside renowned mountain sports nutritionist Vic Johnson, Jane brings professional insight to her fueling strategy, making her candid discussion of her Black Canyon nutrition failures particularly valuable. The conversation weaves through her mixed feelings about the sport's commercialization, her dream FKT attempts like the Wasatch Ultimate Ridge Linkup, and how she maintains authenticity in an increasingly media-driven environment.Whether you're navigating your own relationship with running, curious about high-altitude training, or figuring out how to fuel your ultramarathons, Jane's thoughtful perspective offers both practical wisdom and inspiration. If you're an intermediate climber passionate about improving — or an advanced climber who's hit a plateau — then this is a must-listen episode. Even veteran climbers and professionals can use this strategy to refine their skills and “sharpen the saw” each season. In this episode, coach Hörst shares 13 little things that can make a BIG difference when it comes to sending your near limit—or, perhaps, beyond limit!—project boulder or route. Quite often it's the tiniest of things that can make or break your ascent. Eric covers a lot of territories including the power of proper breathing, the best time of the day to send, the effects of food and drink on energy and focus, how to get the perfect warm-up, how long to rest between attempts, how to win the skin game, the importance of the shoes you wear, how your thinking can make or break a send go, and so much more. RUNDOWN 3:40 - 13 Little Things That Make a BIG Difference When Limit Climbing 4:15 - 1. The first “little, big thing” is to breathe more intentionally. Learn how to do it...to save energy, accelerate recovery, and help maintain focus and confidence. 10:30 - 2. Climb during the optimal time of the day. Learn how to plan your send goes for your strongest (and the stickiest) time of day. 14:17 - 3. Eat & drink appropriately. Learn how much you should drink and eat for a short session--or a full day--at the boulders or crags. 20:00 - 4. Empty bladder and bowels beforehand. Learn how to deal with golf ball bladder...and lighten the load before your send go. Click here for information about the benefits of MAG-ATP supplement from PhysiVantage. 26:30 - 5. If needed, take a practice go (with hangs) to sure up your beta. 41:41 - 8. Rest appropriately between goes. How minutes (or hours) should you rest between boulder problem and sport climb attempts? 45:03 - 9. Rest optimally on the route. Climb fast and rest well! Know how to use optimally whatever rests the boulder or route offers you! 46:13 - 10. Win the skin game! Learn how to make your skin last longer... 51:03 - 11.  Brush the most critical holds! This is critical for increasing friction on small, slopey holds. Brush liberally. 52:28 - 12. Make sure you're wearing the right shoes for the boulder or route at hand. If you're not packing in two different pairs of shoes, you should consider it! 55:13 - 13. Believe in a positive outcome, but let go of the need to succeed. Accept that the send will happen when it's meant to happen. Enjoy climbing the piece of rock in front of you...and take it one move at a time. 58:43 - Bonus Tip: Have a great belayer you can trust…AND a stoked and supportive ground crew that knows when to yell encouragements at you…and when to shut up and let you take care of business. 1:00:38 - Do YOU have a favor send tip? One of the ironies of climbing performance outcomes is that as hard as you've physically trained in preparation, the outcome often hinges on the quality of your mental game. The power point, here, is that when it comes down to the final days and hours leading up to an important climb, the keys to performing your best are largely mental! While many athletes "shoot themselves in the foot” in any number of ways in the days or hours leading up to competition — or even during the sports event itself! — a well-coached and mentally apt and experienced individual will act in deliberate ways to set the stage for peak performance. Towards this end, I'm going to detail 8 so called "last-minute" things you can do (or not do) that will help set the stage for climbing your best when it counts most. The more of these items that you deliberately optimize, the better you'll sort of stack the deck for performing your best when it counts. This month, I'm serving up multiple "Flash Episodes" of the T4C podcast -- released weekly -- that you can consume in less than 20 minutes.  The topics covered in this first episode...include the pros/cons of online coaching...and a generalized look at how training (and nutrition) for climbers has changed over the last 40 years. Upcoming Flash Episodes in September (released weekly) will examine these topics: How to raise kid climbers...to be happy, healthy athletes...and, hopefully, pass on the gift of becoming a climber for life. How (and when) to stretch and train flexibility for climbing. Also, a pithy discussion of climbing injury trends. Potential benefits (and drawbacks) of ice baths (or cold plunges), intermittent fasting, and sauna use. "Sucking Wind" is a term coined by Crater Lake park rangers to describe the moment when someone walks up to the rim of the caldera for the first time and takes a deep breath, overwhelmed by the surreal scene. Today, we have the privilege of interviewing Superintendent Craig Ackerman, the caretaker of this inspirational and sacred place, Crater Lake National Park. Crater Lake National Park is located in Southern Oregon, and the lake itself is the deepest in the U.S. Known as the “Mirror of Heaven”, the lake's deep blue color comes from its purity and clarity. In this episode, you'll learn about the historic journey of how Crater Lake became a National Park, thanks to the heroic and persistent efforts of a single person. You'll learn about story of the "Old Man of the Lake," a 30-foot log that floats vertically around the lake. And, you'll learn about Crater Lake's sister parks in Slovenia and China, the tale of a car in neutral tumbling 1,000 feet into the lake, and a unique biking event called Ride the Rim. Rhonda Loh, a local girl from Hawaiʻi, has been working and volunteering at Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park for over three decades. In this episode, we get firsthand insight into how volcanic activity is monitored and evaluated by the US Geological Survey (USGS) and how they collaborate with the park. We also get a glimpse into how the park is restoring native rainforests and studying fire ecology. Rhonda's love for the park is evident as she reminisces about camping under the stars. Her knowledge of the park is extensive, as she holds a Master's in Chemistry and a PhD in Plant Ecology. Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park is located on the Big Island of Hawaiʻi, rising from sea level to an elevation of over 13,000 ft. Ethan McKinley has been superintendent of Channel Islands National Park since 2019 and is one of the park service's youngest superintendents - go Ethan! I promise you'll be itching for a trip out to the islands soon - it truly is a miracle we have a park with such internationally significant cultural resources and human history, with such pristine and wild wilderness and ecosystems and a wide array of recreation possibilities just off the coast of Los Angeles. Arches and Canyonlands National Parks are located in Eastern Utah and are both famous on their own accord. Arches is home to the Delicate Arch, which has become a famous symbol of Utah (it is on their license plate) and is one of the most recognized natural formations in the United States. Canyonlands is a much larger park with many opportunities for outdoor adventure through four wheel driving, challenging backpacking, etc. Today's episode dives into the Lena Pace's (Arches & Canyonlands superintendent) perspective on the park as she ramps up to being superintendent (she has been superintendent since early April 2024). We are lucky to get unique and never before heard insight into her transition, into the partnerships she is maintaining and growing, the trails she is exploring and the Canyonlands districts she is learning about. We also hear about her experience growing up in rural Alaska and her 20+ years of experience as a Law Enforcement ranger. There is a lot of laughing in this episode, not one you want to miss.  Correction Corner (a few mistakes we noticed and wanted to address): Lena misnamed one of her first hikes she did in the park -- she called it “Wall Street” but it is actually “Park Avenue” (in the case you want to do the hikes she mentioned)I, Maddie, accidentally said off-roading was allowed in the park, but it is not. What is allowed in Canyonlands is four-wheel driving (I didn't know, but learned, the difference between the two), which enables for a unique backcountry experience, enabling you to get farther out in the backcountry than you would get just hiking.Sponsors:Who Runs This Park is presented by ExpertVoice: Outdoor brands like Big Agnes, Mammut, La Sportiva, Chaco and more offer discounts on ExpertVoice of up to 60% off for industry experts like you. The quality of your contact with the rock is paramount when it comes to climbing performance. Strong muscles, on-point technique, and a confident mindset won't get you up a climb if you can't hang onto the holds! Many things affect the quality of your grip and the perceived “stickiness” of the holds – to begin with, there's the texture of the rock and the degree of incut (or slope) to the hold. Weather conditions, such as temperature, humidity, and wind play a big role in how the rock feels and your skin performs. Body position, center of gravity location, and your finger force vector are huge factors in determining how holds feel and will work for a given move. Last but not least, there's your skin quality and the structure of your fingertips. Pulpy (fleshy) tips can deform around tiny rock rugosities to give a better grip on tiny holds and, similarly, skin that's got adequate moisture and elasticity will stick to holds better than thick, dry, callused skin which yields a glassy and slippery grip. It's the latter topic of skin quality and specifically chalk-use to optimize grip that we'll explore today. To help shed some light on this topic, I've got Kevin Brown, co-founder and CEO of Friction Labs chalk, to download on us some of the science of chalk and skin performance. So lean in and chalk up for this grip-enhancing episode of the T4C podcast!
