In this episode of One day with Jon Bier, Jon talks with Mary Shenouda about her approach to crafting personalized, proactive healthcare for world-class performers. The first couple decades of Mary's wellness journey is defined by nonstop pain and sickness, and doctors telling her that what she was going through was all in her head. After finally discovering that she was a Celiac, Mary decided to completely overhaul her diet and lifestyle while cutting out all of her prescription drugs. Within months, her symptoms reversed, and a lifetime of pain and sickness began to disappear. At that point, Mary decided to go all in on her journey as a private chef advocating the power that real food has when it comes to health and vitality. Mary Shenouda, aka The Paleo Chef, is a performance chef and consultant whose clients include elite professional athletes and top performers and entertainers. She is the creator of Phat Fudge—a tahini-based paleo, high fat, organic, focused ketogenic performance fudge, and the new health conscious solution to sugary performance food and drinks. Powerful Quotes by Mary We're all carriers of some gene expression which could lead to something terrifying; but, it doesn't mean that the gene ever has to express itself. Your lifestyle is going to determine that. Most people will benefit from doing really simple things: opening the window when they wake up, hydrating with some water, delaying their coffee, walking 30 minutes a day, getting some strength training in, and sleeping. It's all free. Do all of that for six-to-eight weeks first, and then you can start to explore other things. Key Highlights Success is the sum total of a lot of different variables, and no two people will get the same mix of each variable, which include timing, luck, opportunity, and follow-through. When it comes to the lifelong journey of health and wellness, there is no one-size-fits-all and the answer to most questions is “it depends”—on your goals, unique needs, and lifestyle preferences. The wellness industry has recently evolved from generic and reactive to personalized and proactive. We're in the midst of a revolution in which technology meets collaboration, giving each of us the tools to understand and keep up with what's best for us at a given moment. For some people, meat is better served as a supplement to a meal rather than the main dish. Mary discovered that black cumin seed can aid in reducing the viral load of COVID-19. No professional athlete is doing keto, carnivore, or vegan. There is a big difference between eating according to lifestyle and eating to maximize performance. A sense of relief absorbed Mary because she finally figured out how she could heal her body – by changing the way she ate. After coworkers saw a beautiful change in Mary, they asked if she could cook for them, bringing to light something she never thought was on her journey. We cover everything fromHow she thought this pain was her everyday normal and tried to bargain with God for answers.Dropping out of high school and then immediately succeeding in her corporate job while being so much younger than her coworkers. How meeting Tyler Florence (a big time chef) was the sign from the universe to quit her corporate job and become a full time chef for others.Success stories she's had from her clients and people who have downloaded her “Gut Reset Program”.Her success with her own recipe “Phat Fudge” and how the pandemic has caused an unexpected rebuild for it.Why she likes to say PaleYou instead of Paleo. Themes: Nutrition, the Microbiome, Relationships, Health + Wellness Summary: Mary Shenouda is a highly sought-after performance chef and specialist with clients including both professional athletes and Hollywood entertainers. Shenouda is also the creator and founder of Phat Fudge, a high-performance food line of her own formulation. After almost two decades suffering from debilitating “mystery” illnesses that doctors seemed unable to explain and prescription drugs failed to solve, Mary took matters into her own hands. Devoting years of dogged, personal research into the foods she was putting into her body, Shenouda decided to change the way she ate and was able to reverse her condition within months. This new lease on life would lead her to abandon a career in tech and start a performance-focused, private chef and consulting practice. Working with a team of nutritionists, doctors, physical therapists, and performance technologies, Mary is able to identify and curate the specific nutritional needs, for a diverse roster of high-performing clients. Having done her Gut Reset program three times myself, I wanted to have Mary on the show to discuss the gut, human performance and the link between nutrition and good relationships. Mary Shenouda is Private Performance Chef, Entrepreneur and a master of the grind and hustle. She spent over 20 years of her life suffering with crippling migraines. We're talking pass out on the floor and wake up in a pool of your own vomit migraines. She spent years in and out of hospitals with no help from doctors trying to diagnose extreme food allergies and sensitivities. At 24 with a record number of ER visits from vomiting induced blackouts brought on from migraines, she'd had enough. She took her health into her own hands and discovered (after much experimentation) that a Paleo-centric diet was the key to solving nearly all of her issues. She quit her successful career in the tech start-up world to pursue her passion for the transformative power of clean-eating—a passion sparked by her own transformational experience. Today she is dubbed the Paleo Chef and is a highly sought-after private performance chef to A-list actors, professional athletes, and high-octane entrepreneurs. She's also the founder of Phat Fudge, a high performance food line that sells out as fast as she can make it. Michael and Mary recount her story of literal pain and struggle as she went through her life trying to diagnose the cause of her body's inflammation. Plus, how she's drawn to helping people and her 6th sense at recognizing the pain of others, and how she got Phat Fudge off the ground and turned into a viral sensation. Today I’m introducing you guys to Mary, AKA the Paleo Chef, AKA Mer. She is a tremendous chef and lifestyle coach. She is the creative force behind https://paleochef.com/, phat fudge, that’s P-H-A-T in case you were wondering {laughs}, which may be available for order, I’ll let her tell you more about that in a little bit, and the 5-day guide, Eat, Play, Crush. This is really one of those interviews where I personally identify with our topic so much so that I’m just going to put it out there, and I know you guys will get something from it. I came to know Mary a few years back at PaleoFx. I was just telling her about this, how I remembered meeting her. We were sitting down, there was a group of us at Lamberts in Austin, and we were going to have barbecue on the patio. And I distinctly remember this waiter walking up, and he was like, “hey guys! Can I tell you about the special today?” And she took the reins immediately, and she was like, ok, here’s the thing. We’re all following a grain-free lifestyle, so tell what’s on your menu that you can actually eat. Oh me? I’ll have a bourbon meat. {laughs} Mary Shenouda: {laughs} Cassy Joy: In very few words, she won my heart. She is a lady who cuts the crap, really gets real, and she’s always provided some meaningful feedback and inspiration. She reached out a few months back when I was caught in the should or shouldn’t I’s of launching the Fed and Fit project, and she literally lit the fire under my backside to push me into motion. She gave me a schedule, and it wouldn’t have happened without her. So I wanted to bring her on the show today so that one, you could meet this wonderful woman, and two, she can share a little bit about her magic. Mary, I’m so excited to have you! 1. Introducing our guest, Mary Shenouda [2:45] Mary Shenouda: Thank you! Thank you for saying I lit a fire, I’ve always wanted to be a magician. A little fire starter. Cassy Joy: {laughs} Mission accomplished. I told everybody that. They were like, wow, it’s like you just woke up one day and you decided to start doing this. I was like, well my friend Mary asked me for a deliverable schedule and I really don’t want to disappoint her. {laughing} Mary Shenouda: {laughs} You know, having that accountability or that power where people don’t want to let you down is really magical. That, and enthusiasm is contagious, so I will say I was enthusiastic for you and you caught the bug, and here we are.
