Your conversations and presentations are critical to achieving the desired results, especially in sales. Your choice of words and how you present them makes all the difference. I have the honor of hosting the amazing Patricia Fripp in this episode. She is a presentation skills expert, award-winning speaker, & speech coach. Today, she will teach us how we can improve our presentation and communication skills to help us achieve our goals. Grab your notebook and pen. You'll need to take notes. Why is it essential to pause during a presentation/ speech? It gives the audience a chance to understand. When people know what they are talking about, they tend to speak too fast, and the audience may fail to know what they are talking about. You pause to think about what comes next when having an unscripted conversation. Magical you to help you present better You need to rehearse your speech to the extent you are comfortable with or without the presentation slides. Also, it would be best if you were prepared in case you are required to have a flip. Patricia's inner superpower Patricia believes her inner superpower is the ability to listen to a speech/presentation and immediately pick how she can improve it. NJ Lechnir is author of Leapfrogging Success: 5 Simple Steps to Powerful Presentations and Public Speaking for Nerds, Techies and Introverts. Having struggled with depression, anxiety and suicidal thoughts, and having intense anxiety with public speaking, he decided to break out of his shell and change his life. Working as a successful Learning and Development professional, he is also founder of a revolutionary platform called The LEAPS Method, a 5 step framework that he developed and teaches in learning courses, workshops, books, articles, videos, and coaching to help anxious analytical introverts become powerful speakers and presenters. In NJ's words: "I help and teach anxious analytical introverts to become powerful speakers and presenters, improve communication skills, and develop confidence, as well as personal and professional growth. I am also in a lifelong process of healing from trauma, associated with growing up around an alcoholic father. As a result, I've always struggled with anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts. Speaking about my experiences in public and letting others like me know they are not alone is helping me heal." 3 top tips for my audience: 1. You don't have to be a perfect speaker to deliver an important message. Strive for excellence with your own style, not perfection. All speeches are a performance at the basic level. Learn to have fun with it. 2. Understanding your own personality is critical to delivering a speech topic in your own style with the most effective outcome. Extraverts don't necessarily make great speakers, and introverts are often underestimated on how powerful they really are. 3. A lifetime of struggle with anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts are no fun, but there is help, and you can develop a productive, confident, fulfilling and beautiful life on your own terms. Once, Reynolds and his colleagues went to a large outdoor Japanese hot spring. Since everyone was naked, they were feeling very relaxed both physically and mentally. When naked, hierarchical differences between people subside, interpersonal communication and connection becomes smoother, devoid of barriers and formalities. People get closer and their thoughts connect. ‘Naked presentation' refers to the establishment of communication and connection with the audience in a direct, sincere, and simple way.The speaker's true and natural personality is thoroughly exposed. Naked presentation requires the speaker to show his or her true self, and put the audience first to achieve a natural and conversational style of speech. In this book, the author uses vivid examples and descriptive metaphors to tackle questions like how to understand the audience, how to prepare a speech, how to grasp the audience's attention, how to use stories and more.

In today’s episode of Just the Tips, Dean and I talk with a man with his own empire, Dustin Mathews, the founder and CEO of Speaking Empire, about how he conquered his own fear of public speaking, and how you can sharpen your speaking skills. Dustin is the co-author of the No B.S. Guide to Powerful Presentations with Dan Kennedy, and one of the most sought-after experts on public speaking. In this episode, Dustin walks his through the early days of his career, what set him on the path to discovering what makes a great presentation, and when we ask him for one or two tips for making a great presentation, he switches it up on us. Promising to “overdeliver,” he gives us five things you can do right now to level up your presentation. There’s no way you can miss this episode. In the beginning, there was nothing What’s interesting about Dustin is that he didn’t initially have the entrepreneurial drive. Out of college he got a job and set out to work his way up, but then he read Robert Kiyosaki’s Rich Dad Poor Dad, and that set him on his current path. He volunteered for a startup in his town and got to see how the business was run behind the scenes. And after working there for three years, managing marketing and sales, he decided it was time to go do it for himself. But of course, it’s never that easy, and Dustin is very candid about the challenges and pitfalls that awaited him as he started out, something the Just the Tips audience could not only sympathize with, but learn from. How he went through a public speaking “trial by fire” Dustin told us about how his first pitch, really his first experience public speaking, at the tender age of 25 got him his first business. But that doesn’t mean he was a natural. He told us how he was initially very nervous about public speaking, and that he actually dodged a public speaking requirement in college. He really only came into his own via “trial by fire,” he says, when at his new company he was forced to speak. And surprise surprise, it wasn’t that bad. And after that speaking engagement landed them new customers, it “completely changed his world” and how he viewed public speaking. It opened his eyes to how powerful speaking can be, and how it can trigger people into action. And hearing him talk about that on this episode of Just the Tips, you may be inspired to take that leap, too. “The excitement that lets me know I’m alive” One of the turning points for Dustin was when he stopped thinking of the “butterflies” before getting onstage as something bad, but rather as “the excitement that pulses through my body that lets me know that I’m alive.” He picked that up from Rolling Stone interviews with famous musicians, where they talk about how they feel before they go onstage. It may surprise you that he borrows from music, but actually, he claims his new book about making powerful presentations is “about choreography.” The book, No B.S. Guide to Powerful Presentations (which he co-wrote with Dan Kennedy), is about more than just making a presentation. As Dustin says in this episode of Just the Tips, it’s about “the whole picture,” what goes into a presentation before and after it’s made. As he says, “You don’t have to be a Tony Robbins to get people to act,” and he provides great insight into what factors add up to a successful presentation. The five core components of a persuasive presentation Dustin is extremely generous with his time, and instead of giving us just one or two tips, he walked us through his five core components of a persuasive presentation, with a tip for each component. Now, you’re going to want to listen to this episode again and again, because he packs so much good advice in there, and there are some really easy, but transformative tips you won’t want to miss. One, which seems so easy and simple but so few people do it, make sure you’re introduced, whether by another person or a video. It helps set you up as an authority, and it brings an energy to the room that wouldn’t have been there if you simply walked out onstage. He dives into way more than that, including the central importance of story in a presentation, and really delivers a ton of value for Just the Tips listeners. We think this episode will be one you have on repeat for a long time. Speaking and branding expert Dustin Matthews is this episode’s guest, with pointers that will put power into your next presentation.
Many business owners have found themselves working on important presentations throughout their careers. However, have you ever worked on one that has fallen flat, or even failed to wow investors or clients? Well, today’s episode breaks down what goes into a successful presentation! Dustin Mathews is the co-founder of Speaking Empire, a company that helps train aspiring speakers into pros. He is also the author of the No B.S. Guide to Powerful Presentations, which is why he makes for an excellent guest on how to develop inspiring presentations that produce results. Dustin never wanted to be front-and-center with an audience. He was always a behind-the-scenes kind of guy, and would constantly run from the idea of standing in front of a crowd. One day, he couldn’t run from it any longer and he had to cover for his boss. When he stood up there and spoke, something interesting happened — it was not as bad as it seemed. He’s been hooked ever since. Dustin ended up doing 3,000 events in a short time frame with his team. Through lots of trial and error, he learned there are five components to an effective presentation: An intro, powerful stories, an offer, the meat of the presentation (the content), and the close. To expand on each of these five components, the intro is what sets the stage. If you look at the most influential people out there, there are always introduced by somebody else. So, when you’re personally about to do a presentation, have someone, or something, introduce you. One of Dustin’s tips is that he has a video to give him the introduction. This gives his audience an idea of what he’s done in the past. The 2nd component is the story. Stories need to be in a presentation. You have to be able to tell a before/after story. A story of why your client’s life was awful, what happened when they found/used the product, and how they’re life is now 10X better now. Now that you’ve told your transformative story, the next step is the offer. This is where you do not make assumptions about the audience. Do not use jargon or expect you’re talking to experts/peers. In your offer, you have to describe why this is a challenge/a real pain for your target audience. When you effectively describe the pain, that’s when you come in with the solution. This naturally leads you into the fourth component, the meat of the content. Here’s where you offer a three-to-five-step process as to why this product will solve their pain point. Do not give them more than five, as this will overwhelm the audience! Be sure to bring out your client case studies as well, to help convince those who are skeptical about your solution. The last piece of the presentation is the close. In reality, when you’re trying to close, you don’t wait till the very end. In a room, make sure you get clarification that you’re making sense to your audience. You ask your audience questions throughout the entire presentation to get ‘mini closes’ along the way before you go into your big ask. This is key! [03:38] - Dustin talks about what makes an offer irresistible instead of just mildly compelling. He explains that he has a nine-point system, and mentions what the first of these points is. [07:00] - Dustin discusses the hot-button close. He offers some examples of hot buttons that various audience members might have. [10:37] - We hear more about Dustin’s perspective on customer appreciation events and strategies. He then explains that he likes to position events as bonuses. He also likes to include a physical component in bonuses. [13:21] - Stephan points out that having a physical component reduces the return rate. Dustin then expands on that concept. He and Stephan then discuss people wanting refunds past the money-back guarantee time. [16:22] - We hear why Stephan plans to start taking Dustin’s advice to minimize people asking for refunds. [18:15] - Dustin piggybacks off of what Stephan has been saying, pointing out that you don’t personally need to reach out to customers yourself. Instead, you can outsource this task. [19:40] - Is it better to use limiters based on time or quantity? Dustin prefers to use both whenever possible. [24:30] - Stephan relates what he learned about pickup to the ideas that Dustin has been offering. Dustin then talks about a study involving copy machines that reveals the importance of giving a reason. [28:30] - What is “the benefit of the benefit,” and what does it really mean? Dustin answers, then talks about how he incorporates this into his presentations. [32:59] - Dustin walks us through the typical structure of one of his presentations. [35:08] - Dustin begins explaining the five components of a presentation that he mentioned a moment earlier. These are: 1. the intro, 2. the story, 3. the offer, 4. the body, and 5. the close. [37:28] - What are some best practices for doing a really effective close? Dustin reveals that a successful close depends on doing things right throughout your presentation. [40:29] - Stephan points out that Dustin’s advice is basically a yes ladder. Dustin then relates this back to the dating world, in which you don’t immediately get married. [41:49] - The more time you have with a prospect, the better, Dustin explains. [43:54] - What do you do if you’re giving a presentation where you aren’t allowed to sell from stage, and no pitching is allowed? [47:04] - Dustin offers two more ways to get around a no-pitching or no-sales rule in a presentation. [49:51] - Everybody has a mobile phone, Dustin points out, so getting them to text may be easier. He then explains his techniques [52:28] - Stephan provides a couple tools for listeners, explaining that he uses Leadpages and the Leaddigits tool. [54:11] - How do you get people to storm the stage (or, in Dustin’s case, the back of the room)? A great scene often throws the audience into the middle of a conflict that’s already happening, immediately arousing their curiosity and drawing their attention. He brings his experience to help us become clear, powerful communicators and superstars who can tell their stories in ways that are engaging, compelling, and breathtaking. He then shares his roundabout life story, which includes ending up studying the unlikely field of accounting. [08:26] - Louis actually enjoyed the study of accounting, he reveals, but knew it wasn’t his lifelong career. He then shares more of his story, describing his change of major to English literature and how he eventually used his acting skills to teach business-people. [12:28] - How did Louis translate his skills on stage to the business world, and what are some of the most important things that he taught these people to do? [13:56] - Louis offers one tip that will immediately help listeners become better presenters, involving an “in late, out early” approach to speeches and presentations. [20:27] - We learn another possible way to compellingly open a speech: starting with a question. He offers a few examples in response to topics Orion suggests, and then offers an example of using a prop instead of a question. [24:05] - How does Louis come up with these brilliant openers? In response, he demystifies the idea of brilliance, explaining that “everyone is brilliant.” [27:28] - Louis describes what he believes is one of the most important keys to powerful communication: using all five of your senses. [30:08] - Louis gives us a rule that he offers people from his acting experience: “show, don’t tell.” He elaborates on what he means by this, tying it into his previous point of addressing all five senses. [31:30] - We learn more about how Louis’ stage acting experience contributes to his storytelling, from his perspective. He and Orion then talk about the importance of body language. [35:48] - Does Louis memorize a script for his presentation, or have general cues and then go with the flow from there? [38:16] - Louis discusses ways to remember the bulletpoints. He and Orion then discuss the potential issues with PowerPoint. Louis then talks about a complete template for doing a powerful presentation every time, which he calls the “Frankenstein template.” [40:11] - Louis and Orion discuss Frankenstein. Louis then shares how the Frankenstein concept relates to creating a compelling presentation. [44:37] - We learn what Louis means by the “message” in the presentation: it’s the one thing that your entire presentation is about, that you want people to remember even if they forget everything else. [45:46]- Louis goes through the different parts of a presentation, linking each of these to body parts to continue his Frankenstein analogy. He gives a specific example of a presentation and how he would apply these concepts. [51:13] - Orion steps in for a moment to discuss the importance of bringing things home for people in a powerful way. Louis elaborates this, offering specific examples again. [53:51] - What does Louis do throughout the presentation for persuasion to plant seeds for the final call to action? [55:09] - What are Louis’ three tips to living a stellar life? 1. The moment you open your eyes in the morning, turn your mind to gratitude. 2. Don’t begin your day until you know how it’s going to end. 3. Don’t blame, don’t complain, and don’t explain. [58:35] - Louis talks about where listeners can find him: his podcast Change Your Story, Change Your Life (where Orion is featured on an episode!). You can also find this podcast on iTunes. He mentions his book Persuasion Genie, and offers a free copy to the first 10 Stellar Life listeners who reach out to him at lousclub@gmail.com. It’s with a whole heap of excitement that we formally announce the arrival of our German website – http://www.eyefulpresentations.de While we’ve been hard at work improving presentations across Europe for some time (and making quite a few friends along the way), this new development allows us to focus on the specific presentation needs of German businesses, large and small. As part of this development, we’re delighted to welcome Thessa Roderig into the Eyeful family. Thessa not only shares the same unbridled passion for powerful presentations as the rest of the Eyeful gang but also has the unique insight of seeing it from the customer’s side of the fence. Her experience of working with the Eyeful team on an important presentation proved so powerful that she’s decided to support our growth across Germany. Hall of Fame keynote speaker and executive speech coach Patricia Fripp spoke to the members of the NSA Northern California Chapter Speakers Academy on Saturday. Fripp is the founder of our Chapter and a leading authority in the world of professional speaking. Her entertaining and informative morning session touched on many aspects of her own 30-plus year career as a top speaker. She shared valuable information for aspiring professional speakers who want to prepare and present powerful presentations, including: Ask: Are you practicing to improve or to reinforce bad habits? As a novice, start with best practices from the beginning. Take advantage of the opportunity the Academy and NSA chapter gives us to network with others who have a passion for speaking. Expect to bomb -- if you've not failed somewhere on stage, you're probably not challenging yourself enough. Asking questions is the best education. The quality of the information you receive depends on the quality of your questions. Be willing to promote yourself in an ongoing, consistent and relentless way. Refocus and redirect what you are doing. To build a long-term sustainable business you need to exceed expectations, or you won't be invited back. Desire trumps talent. You must have a relentless commitment as well an interest in speaking on your topic. The most powerful way to learn any topic is to teach it to others. Find a topic for your speeches by looking within your experience and talent, such as the expertise you've accumulated in your day job. No matter how technical your field, build your speech by thinking how you would explain what you do to your grandmother. Despite the fact that there's only so much truth in the world, you have a unique point of view. Deliver that in your speeches. Don't invalidate your life experience. A great way to develop material for a speech is to become a customer of the client who books you for a speech. Be a secret shopper and report your learnings. Talk to lower-level employees. Structure your speech on a strong premise or central theme that is a basis of argument, leading to a conclusion. Be sure your talking points back-up and prove your big idea. Remember the first 30 seconds and last 30 seconds of any talk have the most impact. Don't waste them with empty pleasantries. Engage the audience in your subject by asking "Would it interest (horrify, amaze) you to know..." Populate your presentations with flesh and blood characters other people can relate to. Stories do this. Your audience will remember what they "see" in your stories. These were among the many lessons shared by Fripp in her session. For anyone who would like to dive deeper into what she has to offer, I highly recommend her Virtual Training program. This online resource gives you access to one of the most in-demand executive speech coaches and sales presentation experts available. Fripp's Virtual Training is engaging and fun. It is designed for ambitious professionals, executives, sales teams, and professional speakers. Heck, she'll even give you a 7 day free trial. What's not to like?
