In 1901, during the Philippine-American War, the Governor-General of the Philippines, Brigadier General Arthur MacArthur Jr., father of Douglas MacArthur, approved a daring plan by Frederick Funston to capture General Aguinaldo. Once Aguinaldo was in custody, Arthur MacArthur persuaded him to swear allegiance to the United States and to use his influence to help end the war. What do we know about the discussions between the two men? How did they see the future of the Philippines? How did this event influence Douglas MacArthur's vision of Philippine independence? In this latest episode, MacArthur Memorial historians Amanda Williams and Jim Zobel discuss these questions and more. During the Spanish American War (1898), Philippine Revolutionary leader Emilio Aguinaldo declared the Philippines independent of Spain. After Spain's defeat, the Filipinos expected independence. Instead, as part of the 1898 Treaty of Paris, the US took over the Philippines. In response, on January 5, 1899, Aguinaldo declared the Philippines independent from the US. Philippine newspaper La Independencia printed copies of this declaration which were then put up all over the city of Manila. Amazingly, one of these copies survived! It is in the MacArthur Memorial's collection and is in need of conservation!Currently, the Virginia Association of Museums (VAM) has it listed as one of Virginia's Top 10 Endangered Artifact's of 2023. The public can view this list online and vote for the artifact they would like to see receive a $1000 conservation prize. You can vote once a day now through March 3, 2023. In Commemoration of the 37th EDSA People Power Anniversary: To Forgive and to Forget or To Forgive and Remember | Word and Songs Podcast with Sr. Lines Salazar, fsp Today, February 25, 2023, we commemorate the 37th anniversary of EDSA People Power Revolution 1. It was an iconic event in our Philippine History which was recognized and admired by people worldwide because it unites the Filipino people to carry out a bloodless revolution to end the 20-year dictatorship of Ferdinand Marcos Sr. and the restoration of democracy in the Philippines. Do you still remember those days? Or for our young generation… Are you aware of it? Do you have painful or encouraging memories of it? Or we just say these phrases; “forgive and forget” or “forget and remember” what happened there? From February 22 to 25, 1986, Filipinos are united to regain our freedom, in restoring our dignity, and bring back life. And for us, new generation, we benefitted from the courage of our people at that time; and it leads us to see that weapons are not a solution to resolve conflict instead humility and openness of heart. Through the prayers of nuns, priests, and those who believe that God will intervene there is a twist of decision that happened unexpectedly. We FORGIVE and move forward. Sometimes, memories or past events give us a good spirit to move forward but sometimes it adds conflict among us. Conflicts divided us and made us forget the goodness that happened in that event. EDSA 1 is a powerful image of courage but most of all forgiveness. Forgiveness is an action that seems so impossible but leads to healing, let us not FORGET the suffering of our people who were there in EDSA 1. They fought bravely, risked their lives for any eventuality. Do not forget the pain that it caused our people during that time, the lives that suffered abuse. Do not forget that somehow, we defended our country, that somehow God showered us with his graces with bravery to face the tanks and soldiers who were ready to shoot the rallying people. Yes, we forgive! But to forget is not a way to be blinded by the thought that that event is just mere propaganda. It is a heroic event that unites all Filipinos from different walks of life, religion, and beliefs. As it says, “The stupid neither forgive nor forget; the naive forgive and forget; the wise forgive but do not forget.” The wise can forgive but cannot forget because the error that happens in his life guides him to be keen in traversing the present. Remembering is our way of reminiscing about an event that somehow helped us not to forget the person we loved or memories we treasured. Like the other thief who begged Jesus not to forget him when he is in his kingdom. “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” (Lk. 23:42) His words moved the heart of God and he promised that he will be with him. Then, let us remember that event, and forgive those people who abused others and their power but do not forget the good things that happened, and even the pain that our fellow Filipino endures. History cannot be repeated but if we are not careful enough we will repeat history and maybe much worse than the past. Let us remember God's saving hand that guides our people at that time. EDSA 1 is not only about one person or one family, instead it is about the solidarity of one nation that awes the entire world. Friends, let us forgive the people who hurt us and pray for them and remember the pain and cruelty we experienced are points to be strong. Hand in hand let us stand as one to attain our most longed for peace in our country.

In this final part of the Filipino Toxicity series, Phil discusses some of the unhealthy or destructive expectations that are upheld by Filipino families. Family dynamics in the Philippines have been compared to a "toxic" Filipino culture. Close family ties are put to the test when relatives feel free to talk about a family member's looks, job, marital status, or private life. This is how happy family gatherings can turn into things you hate. Do you agree? Reach out to me: dontlistentophil@gmail.com
This episode continues Phil's discussion of "Filipino Toxicity." He discusses generational gaps, the toxic "pasalubong" culture, and the reluctance of some Filipinos to discuss internalized racism.Reach out to me if you have something to say: philampong@gmail.com
We have all done one or two (or more) of the bad things that Filipinos do that will be talked about here. Even though these bad traits don't change the fact that Filipinos are a great people, it's sad that they keep bringing us down as individuals and as a country. So, for our own good and the good of our country, we must get rid of the following bad habits and ways of thinking.

We scan several historical periods to situate Moro identity and their historical experience within the Philippine polity by interrogating the place they occupied in the writing of Philippine history. Our conversation revealed that while the historical injustices they suffered since the seat of government was left to the Christian majority, it wasn't until the time of Marcos that the flames of discontent and revolt were stoked. Now that Muslim Mindanao is transforming into the Bangsamoro, we must do what we can to revisit the place of the Moro in our historical narrative and realize that they are, indeed, part of Philippine society. More than a historical controversy, the way women have been treated in Philippine history is nothing short of historical injustice. In this episode, we talk about how the Filipina has been written in Philippine history by tracking how historical writing has rendered women marginalized, voiceless, and trapped in a Maria Clara box. World War I was a very interesting and complicated moment in the U.S./Philippine relationship. Many Filipino's supported the war effort - hopeful that a war to make the world "safe for democracy" would also lead to Philippine independence. Filipinos served in the U.S. military, others bought war bonds, and a Philippine National Guard was created in the hope that it could add 25,000 men to General Pershing's American Expeditionary Force. To explore this relatively overlooked part of World War I history, Dr. Christopher Capozzola, author of Bound by War: How the United States and the Philippines Built America's First Pacific Century, joined us for a discussion of the Philippines and World War I.

On June 12th, 2020, the Philippines celebrated the 122nd anniversary of their declaration of independence from Spain in 1898.
