// PS. Cartoonists Ted Rall (from the Left) and Scott Stantis (from the Right) present a Very Special Podcast. For the first time, Ted and Scott do the pod from Hotel Clovis, a.k.a. Ted's place in New York. As always, Ted and Scott put friendship first in their spirited but civilized debates and discussions about the issues at hand.First up: The world of comics and cartooning was upended by the tragic suicide of Eisner-winning cartoonist Ed Piskor, who shot himself to death after being hounded by an online mob and stripped of his professional associations after a younger female cartoonist accused him of “grooming” her four years ago, when he was 17. What lessons can we learn from this episode? Has the #MeToo movement finally gone too far? What of the online posters who gleefully celebrated Piskor's death? Can comics address systemic sexism without descending into Lord of the Flies-style vengeance?Second: The Alabama Supreme Court has affirmed an 1864 state statute that bans abortion in all cases excepting danger to the life of the mother (which Texas still refuses to do). In Arizona, if you are raped or subjected to incest, the state refuses to grant you an abortion. Ted and Scott discuss the political implications for a Republican Party that now finds itself out of step with 85% of American voters on an issue with massive symbolic resonance. Finally: Scott, a long-time supporter of Israel, has reluctantly concluded that Israel's war against Hamas has claimed too many innocent Palestinian lives and destroyed too much infrastructure in Gaza. Ted suggests that the window for a two-state solution may have passed and that it's time to consider merging the Occupied Territories and Israel into a democratic Republic of Palestine where all votes and voices are treated equally. The DMZ America Podcast is recorded weekly by political cartoonists Ted Rall and Scott Stantis. Tune in as Al Mega chats with legendary creator, Ed Piskor about his latest project, Red Room! Synopsis: “Red Room is a cyberpunk, outlaw, splatterpunk comic that you can't un-see once you feast your eyes on the mayhem,” said Piskor. “Think of Red Room as modern day E.C. Comics, infused with the dream of Black Mirror. These are subversive, stand alone stories that are all part of a larger, twisted narrative.” In Red Room, criminals livestream murders on the dark web for fun and profit. The series will be told through a series of interconnected, stand alone stories, focusing on unsavory characters that lurk in the most grotesque corners of cyberspace. The murders are a mystery, the victims unknown. Aided by the anonymous dark web and nearly untraceable crypto-currency, business is booming and the viewership is ever-growing. He is the author of  Hip Hop Family Tree, Volumes 1, 2, 3, and the soon to be released Volume 4.Piskor grew up in the Pittsburgh neighborhood of Homestead. In the 1990s, the area was full of gangs so instead of becoming involved in that he focused on sketching and designing related to his passion.Growing up in an environment of hip hop, Piskor has a unique ability within the comic world to create his one-of-a-kind Hip Hop Family Tree books."I didn't get into this game to not do it. I'm an inspiration junkie, I need it every day. I need to know that in order to be Kobe Bryant, I need to shoot 1,000 shots before practice starts. I want to be that kind of guy for my thing. I can't ever have enough money to relax, to stop."Volume 4In regards to gender inequality: "How much cool stuff was not created? It is an impediment to culture to keep anybody out of the game...We're in a good era, things are moving forward...So we can have a cooler world...I feel very hopeful.""The people who got sort of the most backing in the biggest ways were all males. 1984-85, we're starting to get into a more democratized era where there's a lot of ladies coming through...It's never been equal but at least we're getting the all-star girls showing up in their most powerful forms. I wanted to illustrate that so I had to put Salt-N-Pepa on the cover"A TV show for the Hip Hop Family Tree is being developed now."If you're going to chop down trees and make books...You gotta make the best freaking books you can that have a tactile experience...A lot of comics publishers see their business as selling stories but the publisher I chose, Fantagraphics...they never said no to any of my crazy ideas and demands. This book is atypical in terms of it's format. It's a giant over any book that comes out."Piskor's books are not only unique in design and content but also size, produced as a 9x 13 inch publication.Hit the Bulls Eye:Piskor chooses LL Cool J over KRS-One and The Message over Rappers Delight. "Rappers Delight is like the mall version of rap."As a hugely productive creative person, Piskor says one needs to have patience and ease of mind when putting things together."It is important to invest your 20s in your hopes and dreams.""There's a reason why some of your best ideas come in the shower. The NO BULL$H!# Marketing Podcast

Welcome to the No BS Marketing Show with Dave Mastovich featuring Hip Hop Cartoonist Ed Piskor!RANTSummer-the laid back mindset. Ever wonder how much productivity suffers for companies? Oftentimes people use the "I'll be on vacation" line to excuse why they can't get to something before, during, or after their vacation. But marketers can be productive even while on the beach! It's market segmentation at it's finest. The No BS Marketing Show, Audible is offering a free download with a 30-day trial to give you the opportunity to check out their service. He is the author of the Hip Hop Family Tree, Volumes 1, 2, 3, and soon to be released in August, 4. Piskor grew up in the Pittsburgh neighborhood of Homestead. In the 1990s, the area was full of gangs so instead of getting involved, he stayed indoors developing his drawing skills. Although his parents involved him in some local art classes, his comic skills are largely self-taught. Growing up in an environment of hip hop, Piskor has a unique ability within the comic world to create his one-of-a-kind Hip Hop Family Tree books. He first gained popularity by his publications on Boingboing.net which went viral. Rather than research, Piskor considers the compilation of the history in his books "reading for pleasure"."Comics is a medium that rewards obsessive compulsive behavior and we indulge in that as cartoonists. You can't turn that off.""Over the years of watching rap music videos or hearing weird guest spots on different rap records, all these questions popped into my head. In an archaeological sort of way I would dig deep to find those answers. As a fan, as a nerd.""During my 20s I would strike out and fail and end up back in my Mom's walk-in closet until I got my foot in."Piskor's work is considered a "journalistic piece". He "followed the 'journalistic code of ethics' when putting this together intuitively just because he wanted to have an extremely comprehensive piece of work." He has not had one notable rapper say that what he's written is untrue."You would think that if you made a billion dollars you would be above that flattery...But it's not true, my phone number is within a network of extremely famous rappers...When I get a phone call from one of these rappers or a number I don't recognize...My heart beats out of my chest when I see that more than when I'm hanging out with a pretty girl I'm waiting for a call from."Ice Cube shared a comic strip of him meeting Dr. Dre by Piskor on social media."The reads are so easy and almost funny to read because it's all in comic book form," Dave Mastovich.Grand Master Flash holds the cover of Volume 1."Volumes 1 & 2 are very historic. If you were really into music you knew and heard a bit about these artists. But the average person doesn't really know Afrika Bambaataa other than Jay Z mentioning it," Dave Mastovich.Volume 2:Run DMC is on Volume 3... "Starting to get into the records that everybody knows," Piskor.Mentors and InspirationA really great art teacher in middle school that always shows up to Piskor's events, even today. "She recognized my craft and just let me go.""Really it's just environment that is my inspiration, because I came from some really extreme spaces. I never want to go back to that and I know I have to keep working hard to not go back."He went to art school for one year after high school. Joe Kubert School of Comic Art. The value for him was being around other people with the same goals and of high talent.

At TCAF (Toronto Comic Arts Festival), Jimmy sat down with Jillian Tamaki to discuss her fantastic work on Skim, This One Summer and SuperMutant Magic Academy. They talk about her process on graphic novels and webcomics, working with her cousin Mariko, storyboarding Adventure Time, identifying/not identifying with characters in her work and even a fun tangent about Archie Comics! Jimmy also had a chance to talk with Ed Piskor of Hip Hop Family Tree fame. They reminisced about some of their favorite old school rappers, characterization of some of the figures in the comic, the massive research for these comics, the style of art, why you should get the collections even though it's available as a webcomic, the rap scene today and more!   Both are fantastic interviews! This week the Two Guys with PhDs are rappin' to the beat with two new books that will funk you up. That's right, DJ D and Kunka Kool spend this episode getting down with Alan Moore and Kevin O'Neill's The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen III: Century (Top Shelf/Knockabout) and Ed Piskor's Hip Hop Family Tree 2 (Fantagraphics). First, they look at the latest hardbound collection from Moore and O'Neill, bringing together all three of their previously published Century installments: 1910, 1969, and 2009. The guys spend a good deal of time discussing the kind of readers that come to The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, what their expectations might be, and how some may not be ideal for Moore's kind of writing. Can those unfamiliar with the previous League stories truly comprehend what's going on in Century? Can readers unfamiliar with — or uninterested in — literary and pop-cultural marginalia come away from the book with an understanding of what Moore is attempting to do? These are some of the questions Andy and Derek discuss, and they recommend that it wouldn't be a bad idea for readers to come to Century with annotations readily at hand. (Two great online sources for these are Jess Nevin's annotations website as well as postings by the Mindless Ones.) Next, the guys discuss Ed Piskor's latest volume of Hip Hop Family Tree. This second book covers the scene from 1981-1983, and it picks up right where last year's first volume left off. Among other highlights, the guys talk about Piskor's take on Sylvia Robinson and Sugar Hill Records, the evolution of Run-DMC, the resistance of many rappers to put their efforts on vinyl, the significance of Charlie Ahearn's film Wild Style, and the role Fab Five Freddy played in bringing together uptown and downtown cultures. They specifically focus on Piskor's art and the way he tells his story. Hip Hop Family Tree is a series of anecdotes and ongoing storylines, first published on Boing Boing, that may appear fragmented at first, but a careful reading reveals an interconnectedness that makes for an engaging history. And the way that Piskor represents key players in early hip hop culture  (e.g., Afrika Bambbataa, Melle Mel, Russell Simmons, Mr. Magic, Lonzo Williams, and Rick Rubin) is both revealing and humorous. Whether or not you're a fan of hip hop — Andy is, Derek really isn't — Hip Hop Family Tree is a series you definitely have to check out.

Cartoonist Ed Piskor's latest book, The Hip Hop Family Tree (Fantagraphic Books) collects his non-fiction comic strip history of Hip Hop, serialized weekly here on Boing Boing. The Hip Hop Family Tree follows the success of his debut graphic novel last year, Wizzywig (Top Shelf Comics), the tale of a computer hacker. Piskor has a special knack for creating comics that appeal to audiences beyond those of us who frequent comic book shops and bookmark webcomics for daily reading. We caught up with him after a busy month of promotional activity for the new book, including stops at Miami Book Fair, Chicago Ideas Week, Brooklyn Book Fair, and the Small Press Expo.
