During the Cultural Revolution, many young Chinese in the cities were encouraged — if not ordered — to move to the countryside. Millions of young Chinese in high school and university moved to rural China ostensibly to “receive re-education from the poorest lower and middle peasants to understand what China really is” (to quote Mao Zedong, at the time). Many students remained in the countryside until the end of the Cultural Revolution almost a decade later. One of these young Chinese people was the mother of Emei Burell, who turned these stories into a graphic novel: We Served the People: My Mother's Storie (Archaia, 2020). The book is roughly split into two halves: her mother's hard work on a rubber plantation in Yunnan, and her struggles a decade later to restart her education upon her return home. In this interview, Emei talks about her mother's story, both during her time in the countryside and when she returned home. We talk about what it was like for her to turn these tales into a graphic novel, and what may have been gained from expressing them in a visual format. Emei Burell is a cartoonist and illustrator from Sweden. Her work has also appeared in Adventure Time Comics, Hip Hop Family Tree, Studygroupcomics, and a number of publications in Sweden, Denmark, the UK and Chile. So, I have someone I know who's totally addicted to gaming. In such a way, they use lies and deception to avoid discussions about it. So what do you do about this? I'm seriously asking. I'm into a few things here and there as far a reading, listening, and watching. The last issue of Gideon Falls was a real doozy. What a great series it's been and it's come to a fantastic close for sure. I'm enjoying the TPB of "Hip Hop Family Tree" right now. I highly suggest this if you have any interest at all. Fantastic stuff. We did watch Wonder Woman 1984 and it was pretty fun indeed. Check her out if you get a chance. It's good fun times together for the family. Alright, so I got an Oculus Quest 2 and it's pretty incredible. I have good and bad feelings and thoughts about the place it'll hold in the future. AR and VR I mean. I have not enough faith in mankind to use something this big in the proper manner. I'm sure we'll be screwing it up royally. Have a Happy New Year kids and I'll catch up with you next week. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thedadsnarkpodcast/message

Mark first came to Aaron's notice on the Cartoonist Kayfabe YouTube channel. The hosts Jim Rugg (Street Angel) and Ed Piskor (X-Men Grand Design, Hip-Hop Family Tree) did an episode showcasing picture books that spotlighted Mark's underrated classic, “Who Needs Donuts?” On this episode of Speech Bubble, Mark explains the bizarre story of how the book got its non sequitor title among other unlikely tales from his life as a prolific cartoonist for The Village Voice, The Washington Post and other equally high profile American publications of record, including The New York Times Book Review. In all three of the publications named here, Mark wrote and drew long-running comic strips – the most well-known of which was arguably McDoodle Street, which developed quite a cult following in the pages of The Village Voice among the miscreants living in 1970s New York. He tells Aaron that inspiration for the content of such a thing came on long meandering walks through the city streets at all hours of the night where he would just let his mind wander into all manner of dreamy tangents. Later, in his rent-controlled apartment – where he once heard the music of Kris Kristofferson wafting through the floor boards – he would draw what he saw. What came out was often a Where's Waldo-esque acid trip where every inch of the panels were covered in a warped-ly detailed cityscape with sight gags strewn throughout. Maybe this was at least partially due to the fact that both Mark's parents were gag cartoonists themselves. In fact, growing up he sometimes found himself playing in the backyard with the real Dennis the Menace (son of the strip's creator Hank Ketcham). In addition, to its busy pages, McDoodle Street gained attention for its biting social commentary and satirism. A combination Mark was later asked to repeat when targeting America's seat of power for his Washingtoon Strip in the Washington Post and then his Boox Strip for the New York Times Book Review. Though special in their own right, these two strips never quite captured the imagination like McDoodle St., which ended abruptly, without explanation. Mark offers that explanation here and in the pages of the newly published McDoodle Street collection from The New York Review of Comics and Penguin Random House Canada, which he came to the Toronto Comics Art Festival to promote at the time of this interview. How did he break into comics working with the great Harvey Pekar (American Splendor)? Ed is also a big fan of hip-hop music and wrote about its history between 1975-1983 in Hip Hop Family Tree. It was his first attempt at presenting his work in a Treasury-Sized Edition. In the 1990s, the area was full of gangs so instead of becoming involved in that he focused on sketching and designing related to his passion.Growing up in an environment of hip hop, Piskor has a unique ability within the comic world to create his one-of-a-kind Hip Hop Family Tree books."I didn't get into this game to not do it. I'm an inspiration junkie, I need it every day. I need to know that in order to be Kobe Bryant, I need to shoot 1,000 shots before practice starts. I want to be that kind of guy for my thing. I can't ever have enough money to relax, to stop."Volume 4In regards to gender inequality: "How much cool stuff was not created? It is an impediment to culture to keep anybody out of the game...We're in a good era, things are moving forward...So we can have a cooler world...I feel very hopeful.""The people who got sort of the most backing in the biggest ways were all males. 1984-85, we're starting to get into a more democratized era where there's a lot of ladies coming through...It's never been equal but at least we're getting the all-star girls showing up in their most powerful forms. I wanted to illustrate that so I had to put Salt-N-Pepa on the cover"A TV show for the Hip Hop Family Tree is being developed now."If you're going to chop down trees and make books...You gotta make the best freaking books you can that have a tactile experience...A lot of comics publishers see their business as selling stories but the publisher I chose, Fantagraphics...they never said no to any of my crazy ideas and demands. This book is atypical in terms of it's format. It's a giant over any book that comes out."Piskor's books are not only unique in design and content but also size, produced as a 9x 13 inch publication.Hit the Bulls Eye:Piskor chooses LL Cool J over KRS-One and The Message over Rappers Delight. "Rappers Delight is like the mall version of rap."As a hugely productive creative person, Piskor says one needs to have patience and ease of mind when putting things together."It is important to invest your 20s in your hopes and dreams.""There's a reason why some of your best ideas come in the shower. He is the author of the Hip Hop Family Tree, Volumes 1, 2, 3, and soon to be released in August, 4. Piskor grew up in the Pittsburgh neighborhood of Homestead. In the 1990s, the area was full of gangs so instead of getting involved, he stayed indoors developing his drawing skills. Although his parents involved him in some local art classes, his comic skills are largely self-taught. Growing up in an environment of hip hop, Piskor has a unique ability within the comic world to create his one-of-a-kind Hip Hop Family Tree books. He first gained popularity by his publications on Boingboing.net which went viral. Rather than research, Piskor considers the compilation of the history in his books "reading for pleasure"."Comics is a medium that rewards obsessive compulsive behavior and we indulge in that as cartoonists. You can't turn that off.""Over the years of watching rap music videos or hearing weird guest spots on different rap records, all these questions popped into my head. In an archaeological sort of way I would dig deep to find those answers. As a fan, as a nerd.""During my 20s I would strike out and fail and end up back in my Mom's walk-in closet until I got my foot in."Piskor's work is considered a "journalistic piece". He "followed the 'journalistic code of ethics' when putting this together intuitively just because he wanted to have an extremely comprehensive piece of work." He has not had one notable rapper say that what he's written is untrue."You would think that if you made a billion dollars you would be above that flattery...But it's not true, my phone number is within a network of extremely famous rappers...When I get a phone call from one of these rappers or a number I don't recognize...My heart beats out of my chest when I see that more than when I'm hanging out with a pretty girl I'm waiting for a call from."Ice Cube shared a comic strip of him meeting Dr. Dre by Piskor on social media."The reads are so easy and almost funny to read because it's all in comic book form," Dave Mastovich.Grand Master Flash holds the cover of Volume 1."Volumes 1 & 2 are very historic. If you were really into music you knew and heard a bit about these artists. "Starting to get into the records that everybody knows," Piskor.Mentors and InspirationA really great art teacher in middle school that always shows up to Piskor's events, even today. "She recognized my craft and just let me go.""Really it's just environment that is my inspiration, because I came from some really extreme spaces. Derek is back at his local comic shop, Collected Comics in Plano, TX, to talk with customers and store employees about a variety of comics-related topics. Joining in the discussion are regulars Craig, Matt, and Chris, along with shop manager Sabrina and her assistant, Stephanie. As is usually the case with these on-location episodes, the core of the discussion is on mainstream comics -- this is what most of the customers read, after all -- so this is an opportunity for the podcast to cover ground that it normally doesn't. The show begins with conversation over the various comics folks have come in to pick up, and this week the standout is DC Universe Rebirth #1. Derek asks everyone if they think Rebirth will change the way they think about DC, and for the most part, the guys are cautiously optimistic about the relaunch...or the rebranding, or the renumbering. Whatever label is being used for this event. And Stephanie proves herself to be a wealth of superhero history, mapping out how DC's new universe will tap into and combine its previous incarnations. There's also discussion of upcoming boxed sets of the March trilogy and the most recent books of Hip Hop Family Tree, the first issue of Satellite Falling, Natasha Alterici's Heathen, Old Man Logan, Evil Ernie, and the wrap-up of Baker Street Peculiars. Sabrina, as shop manager, has retailer previews of Snotgirl #1 and Kim & Kim #1 that she's excited about (although she can't give much away). And there's also impassioned debate on the new Captain America: Steve Rogers #1  and its controversial revelation (warning: there are spoilers). All in all, it's another rollicking romp through Comics Land with the Collected crowd, proving once again how vibrant this shop really is.

Chris & Dan cannot recommend Cool As Ice enough. They are totally down with Vanilla Ice. The late, great Robin Harris is “Pops” in this film. Wait, are we watching Pee-wee’s Big Adventure? Paul & Chris are getting matching sweaters like Kid’n Play from the Gittin’ Funky video. Chris has a Youtube playlist of more old hip hop tracks he had the cassettes or singles of, click at your own risk. The film’s villains are the group Full Force. They have great professional names, way better than the character names in the movie. Oh look! A very young Martin Lawrence and Tisha Campbell-Martin from that TV show Martin(1992). Dan says we need to add Reagan’s Bedtime for Bonzo to next season’s Film Frown. How different would this movie be if it was written by Tennessee Williams? Pops wants to watch Dolemite, the forefather of bad movies. Don’t break your nose doing this dance move. Here’s a how-to. Oh hey! It’s Lou B. Washington from UHF. Red dyes are evil! Why does that cop look familiar? Barry Diamond The graphic sex scene is disturbing in a different way than the one in A Boy and His Dog. George Clinton is the DJ at the elephant graveyard party. Who is the better actor, Christopher “Kid” Reid or Christopher “Play” Martin? Daryl Mitchell from Galaxy Quest was part of a rap duo? Another great performer in this film is John Witherspoon, from Friday, The Boondocks and Black Jesus. There is no drug use, no smoking, the one guy drinking is made fun of and absolutely no hanky panky without birth control. This movie is actually pretty responsible. That explains why Kid’N Play had a cartoon as well. Oh no, Dan remembers the awful that is Hammer Man. Magic shoes? That’s not 2 legit. At your next cocktail party, be sure to challenge someone to a dance off. Everyone loves the scene where Robin Harris is talking to the police (NSFW). Dan teaches us what CPT means. What’s the deal with those burglars in the film? It’s the producer and director. The most amazing voice of Fats Williams gives advice about not getting raped in prison. Dan thinks this is a good movie, but no From Justin to Kelly. Meanwhile, Chris kept thinking he was watching Class Act. Dan plugs the Capital City Film Festival as he was volunteering for them. I first encountered Ed Piskor’s work through the cartoonist’s collaborations with the legendary Harvey Pekar. The duo released the book Macedonia in 2007, highlighting The American Splendor author’s work to push non-fiction storytelling forward in the medium by highlighting cultural struggles in the Republic of Macedonia in comics form. It was no doubt a formative experience for the cartoonist who would rise to even greater fame in the indie comics community half a decade later with the release of the first volume of Hip-Hop Family Tree, a sweeping on-going series highlighting the music’s rise from the streets of the Bronx to the driving force of international popular culture. Also recorded at San Diego Comic Con back in July, part two is a chat with cartoonist and fine artist Marc Bell, who hilariously explains why his attempts to tell a straight forward story with his latest book, the delightful Stroppy on Drawn & Quarterly, went so horribly wrong.

Inspired by the awesome comic "Hip Hop Family Tree" and the recent cinema release of the N.W.A. Bio-pic "Straight Outta Compton" we dive into rap and hip hop the way only two middle class, middle aged white boys from the suburbs can. We also look at other hip hop themed movies "Krush Groove", "Wild Style", "8-Mile", "Get Rich or Die Tryin'" and the Chris Rock spoof rapumentory "CB4". Before that we manage to sneak in a bit of gaming with "Peggle Blast" and Season 2 of "WWE Supercard" on ios, discuss the animated Dan Harmon series "Rick & Morty", wrestling with NXT Takeover - Brooklyn, and Mitch's strange experience seeing "Magic Mike XXL" at the Astor. Mitch even gets a bit of culture and gives us his review of the radio play "The Intergalactic Nemesis".

In the second of two on-location interview episodes recorded at last weekend's HeroesCon -- the first episode went up yesterday -- Derek talks with a variety of artists tabling in Artists Alley. He begins with a conversation with Nate Simpson, discussing the recent release of Nonplayer #2, the long gap between the first and second issues, and Nate's plans for carrying the title forward. Next, Derek talks with Ed Piskor about the upcoming release of Hip Hop Family Tree, Book 3, Fantagraphics' landmark decision to release his title as a monthly series, and Ed's gold watch. After that, he discusses the webcomic Vattu with Evan Dahm, along with the artist's plans for eventually releasing the entire saga in hardcopy. Then Derek heads to the shared table of Gabriel Dunston and Aaron Walther -- which is almost next to The Comics Alternative's table! He talks with Gabe about Kickstarter and his work on the second Purgatory Pub book, and then he learns about Aaron's series, Zero's Heroes and Science Hero. Then, in one of the highlights of the con, Derek makes Ryan Browne laugh before learning the sad news that God Hates Astronauts will soon be going on hiatus. Following Ryan's talk, Jamal Igle discusses the new Molly Danger series as well as his work at Action Lab Studios, and then Frank Barbiere shares some word about the secrets to his prolific output...Five Ghosts, White Suits, Black Market, and Solar: Man of Action, anyone? Then, in the last hours of this year's HeroesCon, Derek is able to talk with Kyle Starks about his experiences after Sexcastle, with Jeremy Whitley about Princeless and ethnoracial issues in comics, and with Matthew Roberts about art and the success of Manifest Destiny.

This week the Two Guys with PhDs are rappin' to the beat with two new books that will funk you up. That's right, DJ D and Kunka Kool spend this episode getting down with Alan Moore and Kevin O'Neill's The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen III: Century (Top Shelf/Knockabout) and Ed Piskor's Hip Hop Family Tree 2 (Fantagraphics). First, they look at the latest hardbound collection from Moore and O'Neill, bringing together all three of their previously published Century installments: 1910, 1969, and 2009. The guys spend a good deal of time discussing the kind of readers that come to The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, what their expectations might be, and how some may not be ideal for Moore's kind of writing. Can those unfamiliar with the previous League stories truly comprehend what's going on in Century? Can readers unfamiliar with — or uninterested in — literary and pop-cultural marginalia come away from the book with an understanding of what Moore is attempting to do? These are some of the questions Andy and Derek discuss, and they recommend that it wouldn't be a bad idea for readers to come to Century with annotations readily at hand. (Two great online sources for these are Jess Nevin's annotations website as well as postings by the Mindless Ones.) Next, the guys discuss Ed Piskor's latest volume of Hip Hop Family Tree. This second book covers the scene from 1981-1983, and it picks up right where last year's first volume left off. Among other highlights, the guys talk about Piskor's take on Sylvia Robinson and Sugar Hill Records, the evolution of Run-DMC, the resistance of many rappers to put their efforts on vinyl, the significance of Charlie Ahearn's film Wild Style, and the role Fab Five Freddy played in bringing together uptown and downtown cultures. They specifically focus on Piskor's art and the way he tells his story. Hip Hop Family Tree is a series of anecdotes and ongoing storylines, first published on Boing Boing, that may appear fragmented at first, but a careful reading reveals an interconnectedness that makes for an engaging history. And the way that Piskor represents key players in early hip hop culture  (e.g., Afrika Bambbataa, Melle Mel, Russell Simmons, Mr. Magic, Lonzo Williams, and Rick Rubin) is both revealing and humorous. Whether or not you're a fan of hip hop — Andy is, Derek really isn't — Hip Hop Family Tree is a series you definitely have to check out.
