In this day and age, young people are now getting cancer at a tremendous rate.A constant worry in all our families is the fear that a family member - old or young - would suddenly emerge as someone who is battling the late stages of cancer. This would usually lead to thousands of dollars availing of treatment for an illness that's already widespread within the body without assurance that the cancer cells will be depleted in the body enough to consider the individual recovered. With that in mind, Quantgene is setting a new standard in the medical field as they conduct liquid biopsy partnered with the DNA Company's genomic tech.In this episode, Tracy Wood, CEO of the DNA Company, along with Dr. Krista Kostroman, CSO of the DNA Company, is joined by Jo Bhakdi, CEO of Quantgene. The trio discuss the importance of preventive care, most especially when it comes to talks of cancer detection. As mentioned in the former paragraph, it is better to detect cancer in its early stages to ensure that it doesn't come to a point where it has overtaken the body. They discuss what liquid biopsy is and its benefits when individuals invest in such tests. The episode also tackles what steps must be taken beyond detection. This means making an effort in conducting lifestyle changes and strategic prevention to take a stand against the war on cancer while all is not lost, and there's still hope.If you wish to learn more from Jo Bhakdi and Quantgene, you may do so through the following links:Jo Bhakdi's Instragram account at https://www.instagram.com/jobhakdi/Quantgene's website at https://quantgene.com/Quantgene's Instagram Account at https://www.instagram.com/quantgene/▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬Keep yourself up to date on The DNA Talks Podcast! On this episode of StartUp Health NOW, we're talking with Jo Bhakdi, CEO & Founder of Quantgene, a company that joined StartUp Health in 2019. Bhakdi and his team have made a name for themselves by offering a kind of deep genomic profiling that allows them to identify cancers early, detect hereditary diseases, and find adverse drug interactions. The name of the game here is genomic medicine and we're not talking about 23andMe or Ancestry.com. As you'll hear in the interview, Bhakdi has a revolutionary vision for where the field of genomic medicine is heading in the next five years. And he's got a strategy for getting there. Spoiler alert: Bhakdi believes that if we can get the cost of genomic testing down – which he's actively working on – and can scale access to genomic medicine to millions of people, that could knock cancer out of the top 10 list of leading causes of death entirely. Since cancer is currently at number two, it's a pretty radical idea, but Bhakdi has a strong track record and a compelling market strategy through Quantgene's new offering called Serenity. We'll let him explain the vision in this episode. Founders: Health Transformer University fuels your health moonshot Funders: Become a Health Moonshot Champion Want more content like this? Cancerous tumors have their own microbiome, a unique method of energy production, strategies for evading host immune systems, specialized extracellular vesicles, and one real goal: to expand and replicate at the expense of the environment. Press play to discover: What major transformation in tumor detection and diagnosis is on the horizon and holds promise for very early and accurate cancer detection (and why the current methods of screening/detection/diagnosis are so bad) What specific ability allows cancer to kill its host Why the theory behind chemotherapy is wrong, and how it actually puts accelerated selection pressure on tumors   Returning guest, Jo Bhakdi, is the founder of Quantgene, the world's leader in liquid biopsy technologies when it comes to precision. It's a technology that uses next-generation genome sequencing in combination with AI and cloud systems to detect cancer in the early stages in the blood. The team at Quantgene has pioneered the ability to have single-molecule precision across a very high number of locations on DNA. This core sequencing technology is being embedded in advanced AI cloud systems that also have whole exome sequencing data. Together with genetics, medical records, and family history data, these technologies render a 360-degree precision profile for each patient. In essence, it's a giant, sensitive detection tool for cancer, and it holds promise for fulfilling the same role for other diseases. Bhakdi discusses all aspects of cancer, including how it spreads, how it's acted upon epigenetically, and the potential of certain therapies. In particular, he says, “One of the greatest breakthroughs in my opinion, that is not fully exploited yet, is immunotherapy, because every time you have something very complex…you need another system that's equally complex and capable to indirectly handle it.” He talks about the indirect screening trade-offs of liquid biopsies, the general problem of over-diagnosing, the relationship between the heterogeneity of tumors and mutation profiles, and more.     Learn more at https://www.quantgene.com/. Returning guest and founder of Quantgene, Jo Bhakdi, discusses his work at Quantgene in the COVID-19 testing arena. Press play to learn: What the difference is between specificity and sensitivity, and why a consideration of both is critical for COVID-19 testing What the difference is between antigen, antibody, and PCR-based COVID-19 test procedures, and why Bhakdi believes it is so important to develop real-time rapid PCR-based testing for COVID-19 How the specific virus causing COVID-19 is able to be isolated and identified through PCR-based testing Quantgene's genomic and liquid biopsy technologies have played a significant role in advancing the speed and accuracy of cancer identification. Now, they're focusing their efforts on COVID-19 testing methods. “We are all about real-time medical intelligence,” says Bhakdi, as he explains that medicine is mostly a data problem, with the COVID-19 situation being no exception. According to Bhakdi, the COVID-19 testing crisis is not a molecular diagnostic problem, but a time problem: it's simply taking far too long for people to get their results. Bhakdi explains what PCR testing is and how it works. This includes an explanation of how the amount of genomic material doubles with each amplification cycle in the PCR procedure, in what way the test involves DNA sequencing, and the role of the protein polymerase in synthesizing strands of DNA. He also explains what Quantgene's COVID-19 test provides that others don't, and the enormous demand for a reliable test that delivers fast results.  Visit https://www.quantgene.com/ to learn more. Returning guest Jo Bhadi discusses using new platforms and technologies to predict cancer probability as well as what he's learned about how cancer evolves. He also discusses how Quantgene seeks to serve its customers. He addresses How Quantgene uses the human genome sequence, artificial intelligence, liquid biopsies, and other technology platforms to identify cancer patterns; How they've put together a monthly subscription turnkey service for early cancer detection; and How cancer itself develops and how they approach detection with this layering of different types of information to achieve a specificity of detection above 90%. Jo Bhakdi started Quantgene in 2015 at a UC Berkeley Lab with a goal of early disease detection. The company uses quantitative science for a new level of precision. They started in cancer detection spaces using cell-free DNA sequencing with what is known about the human genome sequence. They saw a tremendous opportunity opening up based on new technology platforms, sequencing, and AI recognition algorithms. In a nutshell, they pursued how to look at cell-free DNA shed by cancer in the bloodstream and recognition patterns to identify the 15 most deadly cancers. They sell their services directly to patients but include physicians and genetic counselors in the process.  He explains their business model in further detail but also covers the complications of detecting and understanding cancer progression, from the heterogeneity of tumors to advantages of cell-free DNA sequencing compared to tumor biopsies. He explains the systemic insight into cancer a liquid biopsy offers.  He describes other limitations of tumor biopsies and how the question of heterogeneity of a tumor is surprisingly complex. In fact, he adds that the whole concept of quantifying tumor heterogeneity is a very new concept. He describes many characteristics of cancer and its evolution in more detail and then addresses how Quantgene layers many degrees of information, including medical and genetic history, to produce a highly precise probabilistic model.  For more about the company, see quantgene.com. Quantgene can detect early-stage cancer in a single draw of bloodWhat we are doing is a potential game-changer in medicine. … it makes the detection [of dead cells form tumors] single-molecule precise. Johannes “Jo” Bhakdi – CEO and Co-Founder of Quantgene  The FounderIn this interview, we talk to Johannes “Jo” Bhakdi (https://www.linkedin.com/in/jo-bhakdi-5048811/), originally born and raised in the Rhine-Main Area in Germany, but now founder of the AI and Big Data Startup Quantgene (https://www.quantgene.com/, https://www.crunchbase.com/organization/quantgene) in Santa Monica, CA. Quantgene describes itself as a deep genomics startup. They also have an office in Berlin and they hire for both locations. By training Jo is an economist, who graduated from the University of Tübingen (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_T%C3%BCbingen), a research-heavy university known for its 11 Nobel Laureates in Medicine, Chemistry, and Physics. Jo started out in advertising and marketing (marketing strategy). He went from there in corporate development, especially mergers and acquisitions. This brought to the USA, first to New York with a stop in venture capital. He was working with his first startup in quantitative seed-stage investments. What we developed is blood test, that guides physicians in detection of early stage cancer. What we are doing generates files of 200+ Gigabytes Johannes “Jo” Bhakdi – CEO and Co-Founder of Quantgene   Quantgene is a deep tech startup, working with ai, machine learning, and big data to fight cancer. They describe themselves as a deep genome startup. Quantgene is working on unlocking specific hints about cancer in the human genome since cancer is “encoding” itself into the human genome. Quantgene developed a very specific new capability to unlock the human genome of a very deep level. Startups like 23andme generate averages in genome sequencing, a kind of simplification. Quantgene's approach, on the other hand, is much more specific, but also very complex. They are looking for dead cancer cells – so-called cell-free DNA – in your blood sample. This only works if they are not working with averages but analyze a single copy of DNA in a sample. They had to develop a vast software infrastructure and their own chemistry to make their idea work. Quantgene also has an office in Berlin, from which Jo joined the Startuprad.io interview. They call it the “Mustererkennungs Einheit” which means the pattern recognition unit. Quantgene launches in 2020 (as planned before Corona) first in the USA and within some time they want to launch in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.   When you have very early cancer, no one can see, and no one can find – with the current methods. The cancer cells die, and they shed the dead cells into your blood. So they are in your blood as cell free DNA. Johannes “Jo” Bhakdi – CEO and Co-Founder of Quantgene     The Video Interview is set to go live on May 7th 19.00 CET(1 pm Eastern, 18.00 London )

Quantgene combines deep genomics with AI to detect cancer very early. When you listen, you'll hear Mr. Bhakdi explain: What information they are able to glean from a blood test regarding cancer presence. The difference and benefit of a "liquid biopsy" or blood test compared with a conventional tumor biopsy. How this test is able to recognize mutational expressions despite the heterogeneity of most tumors. Quantgene founder and CEO Jo Bhakdi discusses the company's focus on early cancer detection through blood testing to find its earliest markers. With a human genome sequence software-driven technology that also engages chemistry, machine learning, and laboratory processes, Quantgene is able to sequence and investigate cancer DNA one by one. This increases the accuracy and speed by an exponential degree compared to other detections that were based on protein marker identification. The test can pick up somatic DNA mutations in the blood caused by tumors with a whole new level of precision by detecting individual molecules in cancer DNA. This human genome sequence work is superior to next generation sequencing because it's much more accurate.  Quantgene's process can investigate every single DNA copy and eliminate any errors. They aggregated the world's largest data set of tumor DNA and created a matching learning project to answer very specific questions like, what are the smallest number of locations one has to look at to still find any variant of a tumor? They can get a systemic reflection of the tumor and can tell exactly what the tumor is in mutational terms. The data they've generated and continue to generate is completely new in oncology. Future plans include the launch of an early detection product in 2020 called Serenity. A simple blood test done once a year should guide physicians on detecting cancer early. The resulting data set will create much larger data sets ultimately, with a huge data flow to gain full scientific insight. For more information on the company, see https://www.quantgene.com/ For more on the 2020 test release of Serenity, see https://www.quantgene.com/early-cancer-detection
