This episode of Integrative You Radio dives deep into the misunderstood world of neurodegenerative diseases—especially ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis). Dr. Nicole and Dr. Nick unravel the hidden connections between environmental toxins, like cyanide and algae exposure, and the emotional roots of disease, such as self-betrayal and the “Nice Guy Syndrome.” They challenge the conventional view of ALS as just a physical diagnosis, shining a light on how a lack of self-love and unexpressed truth can manifest physically. The Doctors share practical wisdom on breaking free from people-pleasing, the importance of knowing your values, and how real healing starts with radical self-awareness and communication.   #ALS #NeurodegenerativeDisease #SelfLove #IntegrativeMedicine #RootCauseHealing #PeoplePleasing #ValuesDriven #FunctionalMedicine #EmotionalHealth #SpeakYourTruth #HolisticHealth #MindBodyConnection #WellnessJourney #DrNicoleRivera #DrNickCarruthers #IntegrativeYou   3 Key Takeaways: ALS and other neurodegenerative diseases may be linked to cyanide exposure—not just from the environment but from internal sources like cyanobacteria (blue-green algae), highlighting the need for deeper diagnostic approaches. Long-term people-pleasing, self-betrayal, and putting yourself last (especially for parents and caregivers) can create profound stress and disconnection from self, which may contribute to disease. True healing begins with radical self-love, clear communication, and living in alignment with your core values—knowing who you are is the foundation for transformation.    Quotes:  “Every single aspect of disease is literally how far away from love are you? And that will equal the degree of the disease.” – Dr. Nick “If you're not going to speak up and exercise your truth, or stand for yourself, you're mentally not speaking up—and that can manifest as a physical disease.” – Dr. Nicole   Find Integrative You Radio On: Website Youtube  Apple Spotify   2 Doctors Committed to Innovating the Healthcare Experience. Healing Brains: How Omega-3s Can Prevent And Repair The Brain Dr. Michael Lewis

Pushing The Limits

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 19, 2024 94:54

In this episode, we have the privilege of speaking with Dr. Michael Lewis, renowned expert in brain health and traumatic brain injury (TBI), and author of the groundbreaking book, When Brains Collide. Dr. Lewis is the founder of the Brain Health Education and Research Institute and BrainCARE. With a military background and extensive experience in traumatic brain injuries, Dr. Lewis has dedicated his career to exploring how omega-3 fish oils can play a vital role in preventing and recovering from concussions, TBI, stroke, and neurodegenerative diseases. Key Discussion Points 1. The Role of Omega-3 Fish Oils in Brain Health Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA) and Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA), the primary omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil, are crucial for maintaining brain structure and function. Omega-3s are anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective, making them vital in protecting the brain from injury and supporting recovery. 2. High-Dose Omega-3 Fish Oil for Concussions and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Dr. Lewis emphasizes how high-dose fish oil can help mitigate damage following a concussion or TBI. Dosing Protocols: In acute brain injury cases, Dr. Lewis recommends significantly higher doses of fish oil (e.g., up to 3-9 grams of combined DHA and EPA per day) to reduce inflammation, promote healing, and restore brain cell membrane integrity. Case studies demonstrate remarkable improvements in TBI patients, including quicker recovery times, reduced brain fog, and restored cognitive function. 3. Fish Oils for Neurodegeneration and Stroke Prevention Regular intake of omega-3s is shown to be effective in reducing the risk of neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. Omega-3s help prevent stroke by reducing blood clot formation, improving vascular health, and lowering inflammation in brain tissues. Dr. Lewis advocates for omega-3s as part of a preventive strategy, particularly for aging individuals at higher risk of neurodegenerative conditions. 4. Using Omega-3s as Preventive Medicine Consistent omega-3 supplementation is not just for recovery—it's crucial for maintaining optimal brain health. Athletes, military personnel, and individuals at risk for head trauma should use omega-3s proactively to strengthen their brain's resilience to injury. Preventative Dosing: Dr. Lewis suggests a daily intake of at least 2-3 grams of DHA and EPA combined for ongoing brain health and injury prevention. 5. How to Choose a High-Quality Fish Oil Dr. Lewis explains the criteria for identifying a high-quality fish oil supplement: Purity: Free from contaminants like heavy metals and toxins. Potency: Look for a high concentration of DHA and EPA. Stability: Avoid fish oils that oxidize easily, as rancid oils can be harmful. In the past few years, Big Pharma has released not one, but three new treatments for Alzheimer's disease. Aducanemab (2021), Lecanemab (2023), and Donanemab (2024), are the first treatments to effectively clear the brain of amyloid plaques — the sticky protein clumps whose build-up in the brain has defined the disease for decades. The problem? They may not help patients at all.Today's guest, Stanford neurologist Mike Greicius, considers the new amyloid-clearing drugs a major disappointment — and worse, says they likely do more harm than good for patients.Despite this critique, Greicius, thinks that the next few years will be an exciting time for novel Alzheimer's therapies, as growing biological understanding of Alzheimer's risk and resilience bear fruit with promising new approaches to treatment.Learn More:Greicius is the Iqbal Farrukh and Asad Jamal Professor of Neurology and Neurological Sciences at Stanford Medicine, and a member of the Knight Initiative for Brain Resilience and Alzheimer's Disease Research Center at Stanford University.Amyloid Drug Skepticism:Substantial Doubt Remains about the Efficacy of Anti-Amyloid Antibodies(Commentary, Journal of Alzheimer's Disease, 2024)New Drug Approved for Early Alzheimer's (New York Times, 2024)Alzheimer's drug adoption in US slowed by doctors' skepticism (Reuters, 2024)One step back: Why the new Alzheimer's plaque-attack drugs don't work (Stanford Medicine Scope Blog, 2024)Alzheimer's Genetics Research:Knight-funded research uncovers gene mutations that may prevent Alzheimer's Disease (Knight Initiative for Brain Resilience, 2024)Why is a common gene variant bad for your brain? *A disclaimer that there will be discussions of self harm in this episode* In 2003, Chris Nowinski found himself in a WWE wrestling ring, concussed and not remembering where he was or how he was supposed to finish the match. This would be a pivotal moment not just in his life but for an entire field of research on a neurodegenerative disease long known to exist but poorly defined and even censored: chronic traumatic encephalopathy or CTE. There's evidence that people knew about CTE — which went by names like “punch drunk” — starting in the 1920s, but it wasn't until the 2000s, when American football players began being diagnosed with CTE post-mortem, that the disease started gaining public traction. Many of those football players, including Andre Waters, had died by suicide. Chris, now a behavioral neuroscientist and the co-founder and CEO of the Concussion Legacy Foundation, pushed to get the brains of Waters and other athletes tested, and began spreading awareness and putting pressure on organizations like the NFL to acknowledge the devastation this disease can bring to athletes and their families.Today on the show we will cover what's known about CTE and how to prevent it, and how researchers are trying to find ways of diagnosing it in people who are still alive and working to find treatments. Here are some good CTE resources:https://concussionfoundation.org/CTE-resources/support https://www.bu.edu/cte/resources/resources-for-families/Send us your science stories/factoids/news for a chance to be featured on an upcoming Tiny Show and Tell Us episode and to be entered to win a Tiny Matters coffee mug! On today's solo episode....Neurodegeneration and brain aging affect millions worldwide, with numbers expected to triple by 2050. While pharmaceuticals offer limited solutions, lifestyle choices, especially exercise and diet, are vital for brain health.Study 1: Chronic Inflammation and Cognitive Performance The CARDIA study tracked inflammation in young adults and found chronic inflammation can impair midlife cognitive performance. Participants with high CRP levels were significantly more likely to have poor processing speed and executive function. Early management of inflammation is crucial for cognitive health.Study 2: Smoking and Cognitive Decline A Nature Communications study of 32,000 adults revealed smoking accelerates cognitive decline by up to 85% over 10 years. Smokers who adopted healthy behaviors like exercise and socializing had cognitive decline rates similar to non-smokers, highlighting the importance of quitting smoking and healthy living.Study 3: Diets Rich in Omega-3s and Antioxidants A study found older adults with diets rich in omega-3s, antioxidants, and vitamins show slower brain aging and better cognitive function. Nutrients like alpha-linolenic acid, EPA, lutein, zeaxanthin, vitamin E, and choline are crucial for brain health, emphasizing the role of diet in cognitive maintenance.Sponsors:ZocDoc- Use code NEURO - https://www.zocdoc.com/neuroBioProtein Technology - Use code LOUISA to save 10% - https://www.bioproteintech.com/shop/biopro-plus-cortisleepStudies:1.
