Today's Bible Study comes from Colossians 3:20-21 and shows us what it looks like for our families -- parents and children -- are like when adorned with Christ! There are a LOT of verses and helpful notes in this one, so be sure to check out the written version here. Also, here are the resources referenced in the podcast for further study: Shepherding a Child's Heart (Tedd Tripp, Shepherd Press); Family Driven Faith: Doing What It Takes to Raise Sons and Daughters Who Walk With God (Voddie Baucham, Crossway); Parenting: 14 Gospel Principles That Can Radically Change Your Family (Paul David Tripp, Crossway). These are not parenting books per se, but 10 Questions Every Teen Should Ask (and Answer) About Christianity (Rebecca McLaughlin, Crossway) was very helpful in talking with my oldest about sin and the world as she approached her teens and Gentle and Lowly: The Heart of Christ for Sinners and Sufferers (Dane Ortlund, Crossway) can be helpful if you need to see how Jesus treats His followers who turn to Him as an example for to point your family to the Savior.

This episode was originally released on June 5, 2021.People have always had questions, doubts, and objections to the Christian faith. Kids growing up in today's youth culture are no exception. As they marinate in a cultural soup that encourages them to rely on their own intuition rather than biblical authority, the challenges to embracing a lifetime of following Jesus are very real. And I fear that the nurture taking place in our homes, churches, and youth groups all too often remains shallow, leaving kids to simply embrace the cultural narrative, rather than engaging with solid biblical answers to their questions. One of the best resources to remedy this is Rebecca McLaughlin's new book, 10 Questions Every Teen Should Ask and Answer About Christianity. Stay with us as we chat with Rebecca about helping our kids find life-giving answers to their toughest questions, on this episode of Youth Culture Matters.
How can we talk with unbelievers about the truth of the resurrection in a way that makes sense? We all know it can be difficult—and sometimes intimidating—to talk about, but Jesus's resurrection from the dead is central to the Christian faith. Join Natalie Abbott and Rebecca McLaughlin as they talk about how they connect with unbelievers when initiating conversations about the resurrection of Jesus, how the resurrection offers us great hope, what Jesus accomplished for us in his death and resurrection, and an important question Jesus asks in the Gospel of John that we should all be asking. The truth of our verse this month makes all the difference, and we know this episode will be an encouragement to you as you prepare to celebrate the reality of Easter and have conversations with others about the true hope offered in Christ! This month's memory verse: “He is not here; he has risen, just as he said.” — Matthew 28:6aToday's Dwell guest: Rebecca McLaughlin holds a Ph.D. in Renaissance Literature from Cambridge University and a theology degree from Oak Hill College in London. In an episode youth pastors and parents will not want to miss, Cameron interviews Christian writer and apologist Alisa Childers about why biblical truth matters so much as we disciple our kids. Their conversation covers, among many things, the linguistic theft of words like "love" and "tolerance"; cultural lies like YOLO and "God just wants you to be happy"; and the importance of teaching kids to suffer in light of the Cross. Alisa also shares two important pieces of advice for parents, and two for youth pastors. Christian recording artist, writer, wife, mom, and lifelong follower of Jesus, Alisa Childers has written two excellent books on apologetics: Another Gospel?: A Lifelong Christian Seeks Truth in Response to Progressive Christianity and Live Your Truth and Other Lies: Exposing Popular Deceptions That Make Us Anxious, Exhausted, and Self-Obsessed. When we think about our problems, it can sometimes look like things are only happening to us. Our struggles may appear one-sided or like God has left us to deal with it on our own. But when we draw near to God, He plants people in our lives to show us that our pain is not meant to be carried alone. And when He does that, we have a comforting reminder of a God who will never leave us nor forsake us. Pastors Jimmy and Irene Rollins have a passion to reach all people for God, no matter their background, ethnicity, or life circumstances. As they dreamed of building a diverse congregation, the stress of being leaders of a growing church began to negatively impact them both, and Irene took to coping with alcohol. They share how together, they faced her addiction and the problems that made it come to a head. Author of Confronting Christianity Rebecca McLaughlin shares why it's important to encourage young people to dig into the Word of God. She believes that reading the Bible with her children and helping them work through their questions helps them make sense of their faith, and also teaches them a way to live that is steeped in compassion for others. And then as we began to get healthy, we stopped doing the dance of shaming one another and judging one another. And we started to embrace the fact that we both needed grace.” - Jimmy Rollins “We began to look at addiction as not something that I was doing to Jimmy, but rather something I was doing to really medicate pain. And as we began to develop new ways of communication, new ways of embracing pain and grief. We began to approach healing and we did it together.” - Irene Rollins “Connecting with God on a daily basis, a moment-by-moment basis, was a lifeline for me in the beginning of my recovery. And as a leader, as a mother, as a child of God, it is my lifeline still. It was a non-negotiable and still is in my recovery journey.” - Irene Rollins “Divorce has no color. Alcoholism has no socioeconomic temperature. Grief is colorblind. And what we've discovered is that as we begin to stay transparent with our story, as we begin to steward the path of where we are to this greater purpose, pain has been the unifier.” - Jimmy Rollins “It seemed like Jesus provided the most satisfying way of looking at the world, the most satisfying way of understanding my relationships, my intellectual life, my personal life. And I just never looked back from that point.” - Rebecca McLaughlin “Every seeming roadblock to faith in Jesus, when you look more closely, becomes a signpost.” - Rebecca McLaughlin ________________________ Enjoy watching these additional videos from Jesus Calling YouTube channel! Rebecca McLaughlin and Amber discuss the value of intellectual curiosity for the Christian, engaging secular literature to enrich one's belief in Jesus, sexual ethics in our post Christian world, and more. Questions Discussed During Intellects Are Christians Too: (3:50) You've said, "My parents gave me such a strong sense growing up that Christians should be the most intellectually curious people in town. I was not in any way raised with the anti intellectualism that can be characteristic of American evangelicalism..." Will you expound on that a little bit and why you have found that to be crucial to your faith when people do object to it? (11:20) Something I appreciate about your work as an Apologist is the humility with which you engage difficult questions of the faith. It is a tone that is often missing in the world of Christian apologetics. What's it like to engage in the world of apologetics with more of a humble heart toward the difficult topics? (17:51) How do you encourage Christians to engage thoughtfully on the topic, of purity, same sex attraction, etc. in our current culture? (29:52) What did you hope the reader would take away from one of your more recent books, Jesus Through the Eyes of Women? (33:30) Why do you believe engaging in secular stories, as well as the Bible, enriches your belief in Jesus vs. leading you astray? (37:59) Let's close with, outside of God's Word, what are some books/authors/fellow Christians who have helped shape you into the follower of Jesus you are today? SHOW NOTES cont. Doubt is a normal part of a growing faith. When the big questions come, you can navigate them with confidence. Is it worth it to go to church? If God is loving, why would he allow bad stuff in the world? Did God really create me the way I am on purpose? Questions and exploration are rites of passage for the teenage years as each of us grapples (in varying degrees) to figure out who we are and where we want to go in life. With a near endless supply of voices, ideas, and influences from the internet and culture at large it can feel like our kids are in danger of being lost in a sea of information we have no control over. But all is not lost! My guest this week, apologist and writer Mary Jo Sharp, encourages us to walk with our kids into the tunnel of doubt. She reminds us that contrary to what we might think, we really are still the biggest influencers on our child's religious views and that the culture we create in our homes around self transformation and questioning can help our kids make their faith their own. By giving them a safe space to ask and discuss the big questions of life we will likely give ourselves a seat at their decision-making table. Over the next several months we will take a look at the book, "10 Questions Every Teen Should Ask (and Answer) about Christianity" by Rebecca McLaughlin. We will use the chapters as inspiration but will cover things a little beyond the scope of the book as well. In this first episode, we will look at chapter 1 and discuss topics like anxiety, stress, and the Gospel. If you or your teen would like a copy of the book, please let me know.
Parents, are you teaching your kids to count the cost of following Jesus? They need to know that followers of Jesus are expected to encounter opposition and hostility. In the beatitudes, Jesus tells us, “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.” We must realize that in the midst of opposition, God is galvanizing our faith and the faith of our children. In her book 10 Questions Every Teen Should Ask and Answer About Christianity, Rebecca McLaughlin writes, “the Christian faith sprang up in a world that was violently hostile to its claims. But rather than extinguishing the small spark of the early church, the winds of opposition gave it oxygen to spread.” Pray that your kids would grow through their difficulties.
One shift that's taken place in youth culture over the years is the way that kids live out their friendships with their peers. In year's past, kids were more prone to intervene and warn their friends if they saw their friends making dangerous or immoral choices. It wasn't always easy to do so, but issuing warnings was seen as being virtuous. But that has shifted over the years as moral relativism has taken root and grown. In today's world, it is seen as virtuous if you allow and even encourage your friends to choose to do what seems right to them. Even if I believe that your choice is dangerous or immoral, who am I to intervene with a warning? It's up to you to do what seems right for you. In her book 10 Questions Every Teen Should Ask and Answer About Christianity, Rebecca McLaughlin offers these word of advice: "It's not offensive and unloving for Christians to tell people that the ship is going down and to plead with them to run to Jesus. It's offensive and unloving not to!"

People have always had questions, doubts, and objections to the Christian faith.
Last year, the US birthrate experienced its largest single-year drop in nearly 50 years. For years, America’s 2.1 fertility rate made it an outlier to other developed countries. But for the last decade, the number had begun trending downwards, plummeting to last year’s figure of 1.6 children per woman. These numbers entered the news the same week the New York Times published an essay by columnist Elizabeth Bruenig, “I Became a Mother at 25, and I’m Not Sorry I Didn’t Wait.” Many warmly received and shared the piece, which explores the author’s experience of learning she was pregnant and the many factors that have caused millennial women to delay children including economic concerns, higher education, race, and geography. But for others, it struck a nerve. One NYT commenter wrote, “There are few things more irresponsible than bringing a child into the world in 2021. I know it's difficult to reject the incredible social and cultural pressure that encourages us to reproduce. The easiest thing to do will always be to have children. But a good rule of thumb is that the easiest option-- the one our current paradigm encourages-- generally causes the most damage and suffering.” On Twitter, Jill Filipovic wrote, “I would really love to read more essays and op/eds from women (and men, too) who regret having children as early as they did, regret having as many as they did, or regret having children at all. There's not much about motherhood that remains publicly unexplored, but that does.” Rebecca McLaughlin is the author of Confronting Christianity, named Christianity Today's 2020 Beautiful Orthodoxy Book of the Year, and it's follow-up edition for youth, 10 Questions Every Teen Should Ask (and Answer) about Christianity. Her latest book is The Secular Creed: Engaging Five Contemporary Claims. She joined global media manager Morgan Lee and executive editor Ted Olsen to discuss the challenges of talking about babies and motherhood in 2021 in the culture at large but also inside the church.
