In August 1680, an alliance of Puebloan peoples, led by a mysterious religious man named Po’pay (also spelled Popé), launched a surprise attack that forced the Spanish entirely out of New Mexico 82 years after they had first settled it. Po’pay's rebellion would combine elements that will remind longstanding listeners of King Philip's War in New England and Opechancanough's surprise attack in Virginia in March 1622. Unlike the Wampanoags and the Pamunkeys, however, Po’pay would achieve his war aims. Along the way we examine the causes of the revolt, the preparations for the ambush, and the terrible first days setting up the siege of Santa Fe, which will be taken up next time. Capt. Jonathan “Stump” Hamilton is a respected fishing guide based in Homosassa, known for his deep roots in Florida's outdoor heritage and his expertise on the shallow flats of the state's Nature Coast. A 7th-generation Floridian, Hamilton grew up immersed in the traditions of hunting and fishing, learning the waters around Homosassa from an early age and developing a lifelong connection to the region's coastal ecosystems. With more than 15 years of professional guiding experience, Hamilton has built a reputation for technical sight-fishing and fly fishing in the crystal-clear flats of the Gulf Coast. He specializes in targeting tarpon on fly, while also guiding clients for species such as redfish, snook, speckled trout, and shallow-water grouper. Hamilton operates guided trips throughout the Homosassa area—from nearby grass flats to offshore waters—offering both fly-fishing and conventional tackle experiences. His charters are known for blending modern angling techniques with traditional “Old Florida” culture, including the well-known Homosassa shore lunch, where fresh-caught fish are prepared and enjoyed along the water. Beyond fishing, Hamilton remains active in the local guiding community. He has served with the Homosassa Guides Association, helping preserve the region's long-standing guiding traditions. In addition to his work on the water, he also guides quail hunts during the winter months at a family preserve in Florida, reflecting his broader background as an outdoorsman. Known by the nickname “Stump,” Hamilton is recognized for his knowledge of tidal patterns, fish behavior, and the unique estuaries of Florida's Nature Coast. His approach combines local tradition, conservation awareness, and a passion for sharing the outdoors with anglers of all skill levels.
Thanks to our daughter we've just discovered epic new theme music for the show. It's called "Watch Florida Grow (The Cracker Theme Song) and was recorded by the South Ocean String Band. This song speaks to the heart and soul of anyone who truly cares about Florida so we debut it in this episode and discuss the backstory behind it. We then go on a rambling discussion about conservation in general, the Great Florida Cattle Drive 2026, and some general cow culture history before diving into the 2026 Florida legislative session and some of the pending bills that are being misconstrued and highly misunderstood in an effort to help clear away some of that confusion. We bounce back and forth from lighthearted banter to serious discussions to keep things interesting. Be sure to listen for The Cracker Theme Song in its entirety at the end of the episode. You're gonna love it!

Our topics range from Elmo's early days cow hunting to his transition into the earliest days of the sod business in Florida. From there, we also talk some Chalo Nitka history and get a highly entertaining glimpse into the early days of the Gladesmen culture and more. Tune in and get comfortable for a ride into parts of Florida's past that are fading fast.
JB White returns from his first-ever trip to Key West recharged and ready to rip into the headlines on this lively episode of The RattlerGator Report. After a warm tribute to his Florida roots and his hosts in the iconic Bahama Village, JB pivots hard into the global chessboard, breaking down the Trump administration's high-stakes economic strategy. He highlights the latest media hand-wringing over Trump's tariff rollout, dissecting mainstream confusion while celebrating the brilliance of what he calls “Big Daddy's global maneuver.” JB showcases the role of Trump's trusted lieutenants, including Scott Bessent and Howard Lutnick, in building a multi-front pressure campaign on China, and explains why the strategy is working exactly as intended. He also discusses the brilliance of assigning different messengers to push distinct narratives, all leading toward Trump's ultimate trade realignment. The show crescendos with a deep dive into Steve Davis, Elon Musk's behind-the-scenes efficiency expert now embedded in Trump's shadow government via DOGE (Department of Government Efficiency). JB unpacks Davis's no-frills, results-driven leadership style, his embedded task forces across federal agencies, and why he may be the secret weapon behind the regime's unraveling. Sprinkled with humor, sharp analysis, and Florida flavor, this episode blends JB's personal reflections with big-picture geopolitical strategy, showcasing both the heart and the intellect that define The RattlerGator Report.
When Maggie Williams met Nicole Taylor at the 2024 NWTF convention, they couldn't have known one invite to Illinois would kickstart a year full of unforgettable hunts — and an even better friendship. In this episode, Maggie takes Nicole to Florida for her very first Osceola turkey hunt. As they navigate the Old Florida landscape under the live oak canopies and palmettos, the two reminisce about their whirlwind year together. From that first Illinois hunt to the 22-hour road trip to Maine — where they celebrated a successful turkey hunt by diving straight into the icy Atlantic — and wrapping it all up in the Mississippi hardwood bottoms, it's been a journey filled with laughs, long drives, and hard-earned longbeards. This one's for the turkey hunters who know it's not just about filling tags — it's about the stories and the friendships that come along with every mile. STORIES:Lawlessness at LawteyThe Lady in the PondThe Real Mr. MeadowsThe Murder of Captain Pine LAWLESSNESS AT LAWTEY June 23, 1894 Lawtey is a settlement that began to take shape in the mid-1800s, with the arrival of the Florida Railroad in the 1850s. In this week's episode, we sit down with Steve Walker to talk about the family's heritage in Florida and learn the backstory of how W&W Supply of Florida and the Emory Walker Company were built through his dad's resilience coupled with his ability to forge strong and lasting relationships with people. In “Apalachicola Oysters and the Battle for a Florida Bay,” Gravy producer Betsy Wallace takes listeners to Franklin County, Florida to find out if a new tourist development could be the biggest threat to a decades-long, $30 million investment in the Apalachicola Bay Oyster Fishery Restoration. Franklin County is tucked into Florida's Forgotten Coast, a stretch of the panhandle known for white sand beaches, off-shore fishing, and the iconic Apalachicola Bay oyster. It is distinctly Old Florida; there are family-owned seafood restaurants next to mom-and-pop bait shops. You won't see a high-rise hotel until the next county over. When the black bears get hot in the sticky heat of July, they lumber across Highway 98 to swim with the jellyfish in the salty Gulf Coast water. This area is home to one of the few remaining working shorelines in North Florida. For about a hundred years, up until a devastating fishery crash in 2013, the oyster industry powered Franklin County's economy. At its peak in 2012, the industry brought in over $9 million and employed about 2,500 locals in the small Florida panhandle towns of Eastpoint, Apalachicola, Carrabelle, and Panacea. In 2013 the oyster industry crashed and took the local economy down with it. Now, more than a decade later, join Wallace as she digs into the restoration of the Apalachicola Bay oyster reefs and a newly proposed (and highly divisive) large-scale tourist resort. Will the Forgotten Coast stay forgotten long enough for the seafood industry to recover and provide stable, well-paying jobs for the next generation? Or will tourism and real estate development finally take over, as it has up and down the Florida coast? In this episode, Wallace talks to Josh Norman, who grew up in an oystering family and is a marine biologist turned VP of the locally owned Bayside Coffee; Charles Pennycutt, owner of Fisherman's Choice Bait and Tackle; Paddy's Raw Bar restaurateur Patrick Sparks; Florida State University scientist Dr. Sandra Brooke; and oyster farmer Xochitl Bevera. Going back to the early 1820's, the Davis family has a long legacy in Florida and our cowhunter culture. Billy Davis has worked cows far and wide across the state and is the president of the Florida Cracker Horse Association so you'd be hard-pressed to find folks in the cattle business who don't know him. He's equally notorious as a prankster and storyteller with a true passion for Old Florida and our ranching heritage. As if all that wasn't enough to solidify his reputation, he's become a sought after spur maker forging the quintessential tools of the trade from scratch. In short, you might say that Billy Davis is a beloved character out here in Florida's cow country; nothing short of a folk treasure for us all and you're sure to enjoy this week's episode.

From locally grown produce and other farm fresh products to their notorious fruit milkshakes and more, they've got something for everyone including serving as a rehab/foster care facility for a variety of animals. If you're a regular customer, you might learn some lesser known facts from this podcast episode, and if you've never visited them before then this is sure to light a fire under your fanny to get by there and see them. On a recent trip home from Key West, I stopped by to visit with Brandon Moehling about his family's history and the future of Robert Is Here. We enjoyed a fast paced, casual conversation so I've gone ahead and added the "explicit" warning for anyone with sensitive ears and/or feelings.
A walk with family turns into an epic discovery. Paleontologist Jonathan Bloch with the Florida Museum of Natural History said his team would have never uncovered a prehistoric site filled with fossils if it weren't for a 5-year-old little girl. “She was walking on this property up around Williston and she was there with her family, and they were looking for arrowheads, taking a walk,” he said. “And this 5-year-old found a handful of bones in the site. And that's how it was discovered. And that's when they contacted us about seven years ago. And we very quickly, once we went out there and started digging, we started finding fossils.” Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

BHA Podcast & Blast, Ep. 156: Florida Backcountry Lawman Bob Lee You may remember Bob Lee from Free the Ocklawaha River!, where he and Hal first met. Bob is one of the leading voices for the removal of Rodman Dam and the reconnection of the Ocklawaha River to the St. Johns and the Atlantic Ocean. He knows of what he speaks: Bob Lee was the game warden for this part of the American backcountry – the oldest of Old Florida – for over 30 years. He wrote about his adventures in his excellent first book Backcountry Lawman and expanded on that success by gathering other Florida warden tales in Bad Guys, Bullets, and Boat Chases. Artifact hunter, historian, fisherman and hunter of both man and beast, Bob Lee is a master storyteller with a lifetime of rollicking adventures to draw from. Join us for the ride.
Outside of Gainesville, FL sits a town we've passed a hundred times in our travels... and yet never knew existed. Turns out Northern Florida has a well-kept secret to most people passing through, and it comes in the form of just ONE square mile known as the town of Micanopy. What's the deal with Micanopy? Well, for starters it is it's own time capsule. Roll into town past the tin-roofed houses and you'll quickly find yourself transported into the early 20th century. The cafes may have modern equipment, but the aesthetics of this unique town are free of the chain restaurants and schlocky corporate stores you can find in every suburb in America. Join us as we recap our visit with the descendants of J.R. Mountain--an original entrepreneur who made Micanopy a must-stop for every Greyhound bus in the 1920s. We sat with two of his grandchildren, Sandra and Billy, for what ended up being a fascinating look into what it took to start a town in Old Florida--and the battles they've fought over the years to keep its beautiful soul. Could we live there? Pop in those dorky earbuds and find out. You can find us on social media here. Check out our YouTube channel here. I got to spend a lunch break with Tito Santiago, the owner and head barber at Eleanor's Barber Shop - Orlando's neighborhood barbershop. It is a place where any race, gender, sexual orientation, or age can get an authentic barber service I spoke to Tito about how he started the business, how he came up with the name for the shop and what is it about that feeling you get when you get a fresh cut. We spoke about him offering a real old Florida Barbershop experience and what that means. We talked about the look and feel of his shop, as well as, what's been the toughest part of opening a spot on Mills 50. Was a great time getting to speak with Tito and how he has blended the old-school barbershop feel along with the modernization of technology. In this episode, we return to New Mexico and look at the ambitious mission-building program of the Franciscans in the Pueblos of New Mexico during the long seventy years between the founding of Santa Fe in 1610 and the Pueblo Revolt of 1680. Among other moments, we recount the revolt at the Jemez Pueblo in 1623. The Franciscan project, in the end, involved a huge network of missions, much of it built quite voluntarily by Indian converts. It was, in some respects, a European-Indian society quite different from that evolving in Virginia, Massachusetts, and even Florida.
