It's Thanksgiving in February on this episode! We talk with author and coach Tracey Gee about turkey jook, something so beloved by her and her family, and special to our family that we couldn't dare pass this one up, no matter the time of year. We talk about the origins of Thanksgiving turkey in Tracey's household growing up, her very thoughtful method for making it vs our arguably slap-dash way, and come up with a hyper specific Buy Nothing group that we're sure could be a hit. Plus we talk about Tracey's brand new wonderful book The Magic of Knowing What you Want and we get very useful, very actionable tips on how to know what you want and what to do with that—especially if what we want is turkey jook. Come for the turkey jook, stay for the life-changing magic of Tracey's wisdom!

Phillip Jackson is the Co-founder of Future Commerce, a media company helping retailers and e-commerce companies understand the future of commerce and culture. With an engaged global audience of over 100,000 executives, his reach spans seven retail and digital commerce-focused content realms. As a writer, speaker, and marketer, Phillip has spent decades shaping brands and e-commerce businesses, guiding them from $10 million to $100 million and beyond. In this episode… Brands are vying for consumer attention online, but trends have become relative to specific audiences. As consumers are overwhelmed by purchasing choices and brands seek differentiation, holidays and other cultural events have become perpetual marketing campaigns. How does this relentless pursuit of relevance impact culture and commerce, and how can brands contribute to this discourse? With diverse cultural experiences under his belt, Phillip Jackson recognizes the relationship between culture and commerce, maintaining that e-commerce brands shape societal culture and consumer behaviors. He says to embrace this fusion by incorporating cultural motifs into your branding strategy to resonate with consumers and foster a stronger connection. You can also leverage archetypes to craft engaging brand narratives. Since culture has become commoditized, structuring marketing campaigns to align with societal changes and cultural movements is crucial to expanding your influence. In the latest edition of the Up Arrow Podcast, Phillip Jackson, the Co-founder of Future Commerce, joins William Harris to discuss the dynamics of commerce as an integral part of culture. Phillip shares how to maintain relevance in a trend-driven market, how e-commerce can reignite the humanities discipline, and how Buy Nothing groups impact consumerism.

In this episode, Winter Skyberg shares about the Buy Nothing groups in Newberg. The Buy Nothing project is a way for people to give and receive, share, lend, and express gratitude through the "gift economy", where true wealth is the web of connections formed between people who are real-life neighbors. At first, Buy Nothing may look like another buy, sell, trade group, but it goes much deeper than that. In this episode we'll learn how these groups help us grow together as neighbors, and how they teach us that there's no shame in asking. To learn more about Newberg's Buy Nothing groups, check out the links below:Buy Nothing Newberg (North)Buy Nothing Newberg (South)buynothingproject.orgThis episode is brought to you by The Joyful Roberts Group, a local family-run real estate team led by Daniel Roberts. Happy holiday season to all our plant-enthusiast listeners! For this episode of Herbal Radio, we'll be shaking things up a bit from the usual herbal adventure we find ourselves embarking on each week. Today, in acknowledgment of the Buy Nothing Day movement, we sit down with our President & Owner, Shawn Donnille. Shawn and Thomas will dissect the traditions behind Black Friday, and shed light on the consequences surrounding the mass-consumerism culture that we all find ourselves living in today. Whilst many large corporations are gearing up for some of their biggest sales of the year, Mountain Rose Herbs has other plans. Each year, we've marked our own Black Friday tradition by celebrating Buy Nothing Day. In making this stand, we are joining tens of thousands of people in 65 nations for an international day of protest against mass consumerism and the throw-away culture that accompanies it. The Buy Nothing Movement has been growing since 1992 as overconsumption continues to consume our precious natural resources faster than we can replace them, putting our planet in real jeopardy. If you visit our website today, you will see that our entire website is blacked out in protest of Black Friday. Instead, we hope you will spend the day with your family and friends, sharing acts of kindness, starting that craft project you've been putting off, listening to this podcast, or better yet, all of the above! This is a day to reach for the meaning in our lives instead of stuff, and we thank you all for being part of the solution alongside us. So please, do not shop with us today Friday, November 24. Shawn Donnille first became involved with Mountain Rose Herbs as a passionate young idealist with a fervent desire to change the world. He was the town's notorious rabble-rouser, always petitioning for mandatory labeling on genetically modified food crops, encouraging people to support a strong conservation ethic, fighting for the protection of endangered or threatened species, and the protection and enhancement of our riparian areas. When Mountain Rose Herbs came into his life, Shawn saw it as an opportunity to change the way business is conducted on this planet. To this day, the revolutionary business principles that Shawn initiated have been used as a successful model by countless other organizations around the world. Shawn became co-owner of the company in 2001, and since then he has initiated several bold and daring changes, most notably the eradication of all conventionally grown products from our product line, introducing the first line of fair trade certified medicinal herbs in the United States, implementing the design and deployment of our web presence, launching our zero waste program, our charitable giving program, and so much more! Now, Shawn proudly holds the title of our President & Owner, and he currently oversees all behind-the-scenes aspects of Mountain Rose Herbs that keep our herbal-ship afloat. In addition to this, he is intimately connected with developing all of our sustainability initiatives to further enhance and propel bold ideas that are being shared with numerous other corporations, non-profits, state agencies, and civic groups as a working model for success. "All of our environmental issues can be connected to the embarrassing way that business abuses this planet. My objective is to stop this destructive pattern by offering an alternative modality and sharing that modality with others so we can all lead the change necessary to heal the planet" Learn more about the organizations and initiatives mentioned in this episode: The Cornucopia Institute Letter from the Founder of Patagonia - Yvon Chouinard Mountain Rose Herbs Blog - Buy Nothing Day: A Stand Against Throw-Away Culture Join our community! This week are you celebrating Black Friday or “Buy Nothing” Day? As women leaders, we're here to take a stand for something (or against something) and commit to it in our heart-based businesses. Buy Nothing Day is a way to say “no” to the notions of… ❌ Overconsumption ❌ Materialism ❌ Sabotaging our peace and sovereignty It's not about not selling. It's about taking a day to pause, reflect, and find purpose from the goodness in YOU rather than material objects. Because here's the thing, beauty, your life isn't amazing because of the things in it. It's amazing because you're changing lives, committing to transformation, and staying true to your values as a woman entrepreneur. It's okay to be in the energy of “buy nothing” for a day, then buy a few things the day after or even launch a holiday sale for your business. Holiday sales are a great way to offer your transformation for a discounted rate or in a bundled package so you can reach more people and change more lives. So take a moment today to think about where you land on this spectrum and how the concept of buying nothing for a day resonates with you. Consider the currency of transformation. Stand committed in your truth. Go into this week as the most aligned version of you. Keep going, rockstar! Let's do this thing…together.
Annie talks about why she is generally against costumes for dogs and suggests some alternatives to dressing up your dog on Halloween. She also discusses some feedback she got about last week's episode, which featured an interview with the lawyer representing the woman who was mauled by Cesar Millan's dog. Lastly, she shares two anecdotes: one about how she is using a Buy Nothing group on Facebook to get neighbors to help her train her dog (unbeknownst to them) and the other about how her attempt to use negative reinforcement to get her daughter to brush her teeth ultimately back fired (in a sort of hilarious way).
