Im Römischen Reich war es üblich, erfolgreiche Feldherren mit einem Triumphzug zu ehren. So ein spektakuläres Ereignis war ein herausragender Höhepunkt im Leben des siegreichen Schlachtenlenkers, der gemeinhin seinen Sieg der römischen Gottheit Jupiter weihte. Dem gefeierten Helden wurden magische Eigenschaften zugesprochen, denn er gewährleistete Rom und seinen Bewohnern Glück und Erfolg. Der von Tausenden Menschen Bejubelte fuhr stehend in einem prächtigen Wagen, der von vier Pferden gezogen wurde. Hinter ihm stand ein Sklave, der ihm einen goldenen Kranz über dem Kopf hielt, zugleich aber ununterbrochen mit den Worten mahnte: »Memento mori.« (Bedenke, dass du sterblich bist.) »Respice post te, hominem te esse memento.« (Sieh dich um und bedenke, dass auch du nur ein Mensch bist.). Römische Kriegshelden bedurften offenbar wegen ihrer Neigung zum Größenwahn stets dieser Mahnung.Der Kreuzweg Jesu weist Parallelen auf, ist jedoch ganz gegensätzlich. Jesus ist ebenfalls ein Sieger. Keiner, der Menschen als Kriegsbeute verschleppte, um sie vor applaudierendem Publikum abzuschlachten, sondern einer, der sich selbst opferte, weil er die Menschen überaus liebt. Er ist Gott, wurde aber als der Allerverachtetste und Unwerteste (Jesaja 53,3) verhöhnt und erniedrigt. Er zog durch die Straßen, aber nicht zum Kapitol, sondern zu einem Hügel, auf dem hingerichtet wurde, außerhalb der Stadt. Dabei wurde er nicht von Untertanen hofiert, sondern mit Peitschen getrieben, mit der Last des schweren Holzbalkens auf seinem Rücken. Er wurde nicht gefeiert, sondern gekreuzigt – und doch hat er triumphiert. Er besiegte den schlimmsten Feind, den Tod und den Teufel. Por el Campo de Marte desfilaban el triunfador y sus tropas para rendir, a los pies del césar, los tesoros y prisioneros traídos de tierras conquistadas. El desfile triunfal era, en sí mismo, un premio para el general, porque constituía un gran honor.Desde el comienzo de la marcha, hasta una coronación con laureles tal que, por un día, el general parecía hacer sombra al mismísimo emperador, había un siervo que tenía a su cargo muy peculiar. Julio Cesar encargaba al esclavo que estuviera en todo momento detrás del héroe y, alzando una corona sobre su cabeza, se repitiera constantemente las palabras: Respice post te Hominem te ese memento!, que, en español, significa, (Mira tras de ti, recuerda, que eres un hombre) La frase tenía como objetivo impedir que el general victorioso cayera en el orgullo y la soberbia. Así que el papel del esclavo era recordarle al simple mortal que la soberbia no es grandeza, sino una hinchazón malsana.¿Quién desempeña ese papel en tu vida? ¿Quién te recuerda que eres humana y, por tanto, falible, limitada, dependiente de Dios? ¿Tal vez son las relaciones laborales que, de vez en cuando, te hacen sentir impotente cuando creías que lo tenías todo bajo control? ¿Tal vez es tu pareja, tus hijos, las estrecheces económicas, o una enfermedad que se ha convertido en aguijón en tu carne? ¿Por qué no lo percibes como algo al servicio de Dios, para que nunca pierdas la perspectiva de lo que fuiste, lo que eres, lo que serás? Con esa perspectiva, te será fácil comprender que no hay razón para sentirte orgullosa.Aunque según los parámetros humanos, los grandes honores conducen al orgullo, bíblicamente hablando «tras el orgullo viene el fracaso; tras la humildad, la prosperidad» (Prov. 18:12). «Si alguno quiere gloriarse, que se gloríe del Señor. Porque el hombre digno de aprobación no es el que se alaba a sí mismo, sino aquel a quien el Señor alaba» (2 Cor. 10:17-18). Si queremos presentarnos delante de Dios como dignas de aprobación, hemos de tener cuidado con mantener a raya toda manifestación de soberbia.Quien se hincha por sus grandes «logros» parece la gran cosa, pero no está sano. La humildad, en cambio, es fuente de salud emocional, espiritual y física. Com o tempo, decidiu-se que haveria sempre um servo que tinha como única função ficar atrás do general dizendo “Respice post te. Hominem te esse memento. Memento mori!” que significa "Olhe para trás. Lembre-se de que você é mortal. Lembre-se que você vai morrer". Uma outra possível origem do termo é em algumas ordens católicas, onde os monges, ao se encontrarem nos corredores e nas ruas, costumavam proferir a frase uns aos outros: “Memento mori”. Do you spend time thinking about your mortality? If you do, does it fill you with gratitude? If you're like most modern Christians, you spend as little time as possible thinking about death. Unless you're an estate planner, pastor, doctor, or mortician, you likely don't spend a lot of time even thinking about mortality. Our youth-driven culture keeps us in the constant pursuit of life through technology and science. Todd Billings, a pastor and theologian, found this thought pattern disrupted by a diagnosis of incurable cancer. In his book, The End of the Christian Life, Billings calls us to embrace our mortality in our daily life and faith. He says, “This is the journey of genuine discipleship, following the crucified and resurrected Lord in a world of distraction and false hopes.” Memento Mori: Remember death The latin phrase memento mori means to “remember death.” It reminds us that we are mere mortals and to never get too big a view of ourselves. It's also a tremendous reminder to cherish every moment. The phrase originated when victorious Roman generals returned from battle. While they walked the streets—receiving the adulation of the crowds—a servant followed the general and whispered, “Respice post te! Hominem te esse memento! Memento mori!” Translated, this means, “Look behind you! Remember that you are but a man! Os dejo por aquí una de las reflexiones del sábado estoico: Vas a caer Vas a perder a tus padres Vas a perder a tus amigos Vas a perder a tu pareja Deja de creer que no vas a caer. Meditar sobre la mortalidad no es deprimente, es deprimente si pierdes el punto. De hecho, es una herramienta para crear propósito y significado. Una herramienta que se ha utilizado generaciones para crear una perspectiva y urgencia reales. Trata al tiempo como un regalo para no desperdiciarlo en lo trivial y vano. La muerte no hace que la vida carezca de sentido, sino que tiene un propósito, y afortunadamente, no tenemos que morir para aprovechar esto. Un simple recordatorio puede acercarnos a vivir la vida que queremos. No importa quién seas, que tengas o cuántas cosas te queden por hacer, un coche puede golpearte en una intersección y meterte los dientes en el cráneo. Eso es. Todo podría haber terminado. This week Sue Lawley's castaway is a nun and a pioneer of the hospice movement. Sister Frances Dominica says she had always felt she was born to be a nurse and as a child would line up her dolls and teddies in pretend hospital beds and tend to them. She took her life vows in 1972 and, in 1977, at the incredibly young age of 34, was elected to be the Mother Superior of her community. The following year she met a family with a sick child and offered to give her respite care. It was that relationship which gave Sister Frances the idea of starting a children's hospice and, in 1982, Helen House opened. It was the first children's hospice in the world. For the past four years she has been fundraising for another hospice - which she calls a Respice, a mixture of respite and hospice – Douglas House, which is geared up for the needs of adolescents and young adults.
