Israel's journey toward the Promised Land continues to meet external opposition. When a Canaanite king comes out against Israel, Israel turns to the LORD for His help, and He is faithful to His promise. However, when Israel's journey turns in a seemingly wrong direction due to Edom's lack of cooperation, the people are quick to grumble again. In response, the LORD sends fiery serpents as His judgment against Israel. This time, however, Israel turns to the LORD in true repentance and asks for Moses' intercession. The LORD graciously instructs Moses to make a bronze serpent and set it on a pole, so that those snake-bitten Israelites could look there in faith and live. Jesus says in John 3 that this event preaches His crucifixion. Jesus was lifted up on the cross so that all who look to Him in faith will have eternal life. Rev. William Terjesen, pastor at the Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer in Peekskill, NY, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Numbers 21:1-9. "Wilderness Wanderings” is a series on Sharper Iron that goes through the book of Numbers. After the LORD delivers His people from slavery in Egypt, He leads them toward the Promised Land. Although the first generation of Israelites proves faithless, the LORD remains faithful to His people and brings a new generation of Israelites to the plains of Moab. This strengthens us to listen to God's promises today and stay faithful to Him as He guides us toward resurrection life. Sharper Iron, hosted by Rev. Timothy Appel, looks at the text of Holy Scripture both in its broad context and its narrow detail, all for the sake of proclaiming Christ crucified and risen for sinners. Two pastors engage with God's Word to sharpen not only their own faith and knowledge, but the faith and knowledge of all who listen. Submit comments or questions to: listener@kfuo.org

Then Jesus took unto him the twelve, and said to them: Behold, we go up to Jerusalem, and all things shall be accomplished which were written by the prophets concerning the Son of man.Assumpsit autem Jesus duodecim, et ait illis : Ecce ascendimus Jerosolymam, et consummabuntur omnia quae scripta sunt per prophetas de Filio hominis : 32 For he shall be delivered to the Gentiles, and shall be mocked, and scourged, and spit upon:tradetur enim gentibus, et illudetur, et flagellabitur, et conspuetur : 33 And after they have scourged him, they will put him to death; and the third day he shall rise again.et postquam flagellaverint, occident eum, et tertia die resurget. 34 And they understood none of these things, and this word was hid from them, and they understood not the things that were said.Et ipsi nihil horum intellexerunt, et erat verbum istud absconditum ab eis, et non intelligebant quae dicebantur. 35 Now it came to pass, when he drew nigh to Jericho, that a certain blind man sat by the way side, begging.Factum est autem, cum appropinquaret Jericho, caecus quidam sedebat secus viam, mendicans. 36 And when he heard the multitude passing by, he asked what this meant.Et cum audiret turbam praetereuntem, interrogabat quid hoc esset. 37 And they told him, that Jesus of Nazareth was passing by.Dixerunt autem ei quod Jesus Nazarenus transiret. 38 And he cried out, saying: Jesus, son of David, have mercy on me.Et clamavit, dicens : Jesu, fili David, miserere mei. 39 And they that went before, rebuked him, that he should hold his peace: but he cried out much more: Son of David, have mercy on me.Et qui praeibant, increpabant eum ut taceret. Ipse vero multo magis clamabat : Fili David, miserere mei. 40 And Jesus standing, commanded him to be brought unto him. And when he was come near, he asked him,Stans autem Jesus jussit illum adduci ad se. Et cum appropinquasset, interrogavit illum, 41 Saying: What wilt thou that I do to thee? But he said: Lord, that I may see.dicens : Quid tibi vis faciam? At ille dixit : Domine, ut videam. 42 And Jesus said to him: Receive thy sight: thy faith hath made thee whole.Et Jesus dixit illi : Respice, fides tua te salvum fecit. 43 And immediately he saw, and followed him, glorifying God. And all the people, when they saw it, gave praise to God.Et confestim vidit, et sequebatur illum magnificans Deum. Et omnis plebs ut vidit, dedit laudem Deo. Interview with Francis Macdonald, CEO of Li-FT Power (CSE: LIFT)Li-FT Power is focused on exploring and developing hard rock lithium deposits in Canada. The company's flagship project is the Yellowknife lithium project in the Northwest Territories, which hosts 13 significant spodumene pegmatites exposed at surface. Historic sampling indicates the pegmatites have high lithium grades of 1-2% Li2O.Drilling commenced at Yellowknife in June 2022 and initial holes have intersected wide intervals of spodumene mineralization. Li-FT plans an aggressive 45,000 meter drill program through November to delineate an initial mineral resource. The project benefits from excellent infrastructure with road access and proximity to rail.Li-FT is also advancing an early stage exploration portfolio in Quebec's James Bay region, where the company is using systematic till sampling to pinpoint buried lithium pegmatites. Drilling has commenced at the Rupert project and will be expanded to other targets. Additional field work is planned at the Cali project in the Northwest Territories. With a tight share structure and over $35 million in cash, Li-FT is well funded to advance its projects. The company aims to fast track Yellowknife to a preliminary economic assessment within 18 months. Li-FT's portfolio provides exposure to multiple lithium projects in mining friendly Canadian jurisdictions.

In chapter 13 of the book of Revelation, the apostle John sees a vision of a helping power that arises to deceive people into worshipping the antichrist system that came out of Rome. This second beast comes out of the Earth, which is contrasted to coming out of the sea (a populous area) and it looks like a lamb (resembles Christianity or Christian values) yet speaks (legislates) like a dragon. This power also exercises all the authority In history there is only one world power that came up out of nowhere, exercised world power status, looks like Christianity but acts otherwise and is currently helping to deceive people back into a worldwide acceptance of the first beast. This lamb-like power also arose right around the time that the first beast received a mortal wound, and today it is fulfilling its role as the false prophet who deceives the world into building an image of the first beast. Can you guess who this power is? Today we will find out what history and the bible tell us about it. Amen. The LessonsFIRST READING Genesis 21:8-21The people sit.A Reading from the book of Genesis. The child grew, and was weaned; and Abraham made a great feast on the day that Isaac was weaned. But Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, whom she had borne to Abraham, playing with her son Isaac. So she said to Abraham, “Cast out this slave woman with her son; for the son of this slave woman shall not inherit along with my son Isaac.” The matter was very distressing to Abraham on account of his son. But God said to Abraham, “Do not be distressed because of the boy and because of your slave woman; whatever Sarah says to you, do as she tells you, for it is through Isaac that offspring shall be named for you. As for the son of the slave woman, I will make a nation of him also, because he is your offspring.” So Abraham rose early in the morning, and took bread and a skin of water, and gave it to Hagar, putting it on her shoulder, along with the child, and sent her away. And she departed, and wandered about in the wilderness of Beer-sheba.When the water in the skin was gone, she cast the child under one of the bushes. Then she went and sat down opposite him a good way off, about the distance of a bowshot; for she said, “Do not let me look on the death of the child.” And as she sat opposite him, she lifted up her voice and wept. And God heard the voice of the boy; and the angel of God called toHagar from heaven, and said to her, “What troubles you, Hagar? Do not be afraid; for God has heard the voice of the boy where he is. Come, lift up the boy and hold him fast with your hand, for I will make a great nation of him.” Then God opened her eyes and she saw a well of water. She went, and filled the skin with water, and gave the boy a drink.God was with the boy, and he grew up; he lived in the wilderness, and became an expert with the bow. He lived in the wilderness of Paran; and his mother got a wife for him from the land of Egypt.Reader The Word of the Lord. "He Is Raised" – Matthew 28 Part 7 of the Sermon Series "Lift High the Cross." Sermon by Dr. George C. Anderson from Easter Sunday, April 9, 2023. "The realm of God is not bound by borders or legislated by a government. No, the ream of God is forever and today. It is Already-News. The realm is known in baptism when all allegiances give way to an allegiance to God that is then shown when one's heart is for compassion, one's agenda is justice, one's motivation is gratitude, and one's habit is reconciliation." "Carried" – Matthew 16:21-26 Part 5 of the Sermon Series "Lift High the Cross." Sermon by the Rev. Ben Brannan from Sunday, March 26, 2023. "If we can understand that all suffering and crucifixion is of the “one body,” then we are open to the crosses others carry, and it is then that we may join in the reconciling work of Christ's cross for all. It is then that we realize that my salvation is a part of your salvation. It is then we realize that my liberation is bound up in the liberation of the other. It is then we realize that my reconciliation, is the reconciliation of all creation, through Christ, with Christ, and in Christ." "Reconciled" – Luke 15:11-32, 23:32-34a Part 4 of the Sermon Series "Lift High the Cross." Sermon by Dr. George C. Anderson from Sunday, March 19, 2023. "The cross is the intersection of the vertical embrace of God's unconditional love, and the horizonal work of reconciliation that heals what is broken. Once you understand that about the cross—once you understand that it reveals both the separation of sin and the embrace of reconciliation—you begin to see the cross everywhere." "History Revealed" – Mark 15:1-15 Part 3 of the Sermon Series "Lift High the Cross." Sermon by the Rev. Elizabeth N.H. Link from Sunday, March 12, 2023. "Since that Friday we now call 'Good,' Christians have been trying to make sense of the cross. Faithful and doubtful people alike have been wrestling with what it means. That's what we're doing here, right? We are asking whether the theories and equations Christians have devised actually hold up when we compare them with what we know of a loving and generous and gracious God." "God Revealed: Part 2 of the Sermon Series Lift High the Cross" – Philippians 2:1-11 Sermon by Dr. George C. Anderson from Sunday, March 5, 2023. "What I want to talk about is whether through Jesus God became a better version of God's self or whether in Jesus we can see more clearly who God has always been. Revelation, not change, is what Paul is talking about in our passage, I think. Look at the picture he draws with his passage. He speaks of Jesus being with God from the beginning. So, whatever we say is true about Jesus was true about God from the beginning."
"Revealed: Part 1 of the Sermon Series Lift High the Cross" – John 13:36-14:7 Sermon by Dr. George C. Anderson from Sunday, February 26, 2023. "The cross reveals our sin. Yes, it does and you are going to hear that point made multiple times in our sermon series. But I think even more, the cross reveals our humanity. The cross reveals that we are not gods who can rise above our limits, but we are human and we need to accept it. Because Jesus, who dies, submits to the limits of being human, there is more to be found in the truth of the cross than the condemnation of sin. There can be found the affirmation that God found human life worth living. We will not be perfect, but if God finds life among us worth living despite having to die… then life is worth living despite our having to die. By accepting death, Jesus showed us how to live."
"Lift High the Cross: Enough of Formulas" – 1 Corinthians 1:18-25 Sermon by Dr. George C. Anderson from Sunday, February 19, 2023. "For me, it gets down to this. Make of any illustration of the Atonement—any illustration of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus—a definition; and the cross becomes a fix rather than a revelation. I think the cross is a revelation, not a fix. The cross doesn't change reality but reveals it. And because it is a revelation, it is something that we can turn this way and that in order to understand how sacrificial love can be the bridge between sinners and God and how sacrificial love can be the means by which we can be reconciled with each other."

Today's Reading: Numbers 21:4-9Daily Lectionary: Numbers 8:5-26; Luke 15:11-32 From Mount Hor they set out by the way to the Red Sea, to go around the land of Edom. And the people became impatient on the way. (Numbers 21:4) In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. "I don't want to!" "No!" "You can't make me!" Does this sound familiar to you? Do you remember ever saying those words yourself? I don't know about you, but I've said those phrases a time or two, probably more recently than I'd want to admit. As God's people began to voice this sentiment, they probably all jumped into the cadence of complaint. But to whom was their complaint directed? Of course this was directed against Moses, because it was Moses who issued the command to move. But where did Moses get the command? "And the people spoke against God and against Moses. . . "(Numbers 21:5). Clearly, all of this was God's fault. It was God's fault that the people were impatient. It was God's fault that the people didn't want to listen to God. It was God's fault that they had no food or water. Blame God for everything and everything will work out for the better, right? That's how God's people thought then and that's how people tend to think today, isn't it? Things go well and we think we were the cause; things go bad and we blame God. What good is there in blaming God? What good is there in trying to go around God and do things our own way? Whenever we try to do things without God, the results are never promising. In fact, we make things worse for ourselves all because we don't want to listen to what God has to say about this and that. What happened to God's people when they chose not to listen? God sent fiery serpents to the people and many died. It was then that the people repented and returned to Moses, asking what they needed to do to be saved. The answer: Look to the fiery serpent and live. You and I do not have a fiery serpent to look at in order to be saved. We have Jesus. We see our salvation as He is lifted high upon the Cross. We see our Jesus in the breaking of the bread. We see Jesus in the waters of Holy Baptism. We see our salvation high and lifted up for us, that we may gaze upon Jesus and be saved. In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. Lift high the cross, the love of Christ proclaim Til all the world adore His sacred name. O Lord, once lifted on the glorious tree, As Thou hast promised, draw us all to Thee. ("Lift High the Cross" LSB 837, st.4)-Rev. Pastor Oelhafen preaches from 1 Corinthians 1:18-25 on March 27, 2022. 18 For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 19 For it is written: “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate.” 20 Where is the wise person? Where is the teacher of the law? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? 21 For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe. 22 Jews demand signs and Greeks look for wisdom, 23 but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, 24 but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25 For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.

Rivermont Missions Conference: A Weary World Rejoices “A thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices, for yonder breaks a new and glorious morn...” You know these words from the Christmas Hymn, O Holy Night. It seems that this year, such words ring more true than ever. For there is no greater hope for our weary world than the thrill of knowing and trusting in the power of Christ's life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. That has been the focus of our weekend Mission Conference and we look to wrap up the conference on Sunday as former Senior Pastor of Rivermont, Clay Smith, preaches a sermon from Acts 9 entitled, "The Gospel's Power to Savor". We'll be looking at the conversion of Saul, whose transformation and change was profound. As we look at his conversion, we'll ask the question, "How does a person change?" We'll find that a person begins to change when they meet Jesus and they grow when Jesus sets them into a family. As we celebrate God's missional power to save, his call to serve and his invitation to savor, we will sing "How Great Thou Art", "To God Be the Glory", and "Lift High the Cross". We will also enjoy special music from Miriam and Rachel Amos (8:30), Doug and Julie Haley and Vicky Pogue (8:30/11:00), the Chapel Choir (11:00) and the Sanctuary Choir (11:00). May God's glory and renown be experienced as we come together this Sunday for worship.

Photo: St. Olaf's altar-pulpit in Cranfills Gap, Texas.Today's guest is Alex Aakre, a master of divinity student at Luther Seminary, St. Paul, MN. He is a graduate of Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. His paper, Lift High the Word of God, received an honorable mention from the 2020 Abdel Ross Wentz prize of the Lutheran Historical Society of the Mid-Atlantic.Alex's article is published in the Journal of the Lutheran Historical Conference 2019, “Lift High the Word of God: A Social and Theological Examination of Altar-Pulpits in Norwegian-American Lutheran Churches.” Alex focuses on an unusual oddity in church architecture—the altar-pulpit. Alex summarizes the pre-existing analysis on Norwegian American altar-pulpits as mainly folk art, but offers his theological analysis and promotes his own five categories of altar-pulpits to help us understand them better. He writes, “The dominant inspiring force behind the design is the categorical alignment, rather than aesthetic effect.” Alex argues that altar-pulpits can be understood as a paradox. Listen to this podcast and read Alex's article to learn about his 5 categories and the impact of Pietism on Norwegian American church architecture.Lutheran History ShopSupport the show
Take a good look at the cross....look to Jesus who saved you and me. Let Jesus take you out of darkness! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/john6345/message
And so it was with me, brothers and sisters. When I came to you, I did not come with eloquence or human wisdom as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God.[a] 2 For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. 3 I came to you in weakness with great fear and trembling. 4 My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit's power, 5 so that your faith might not rest on human wisdom, but on God's power.
