nIt's that time of year when we look back and figure out if we actually liked any of the movies and shows we saw. Turns out there were a few. Hint: None of them invoved superheroes. But first, we've got some new movies and shows to tell you about and we start with "The Color Purple." First it was a book, then a movie, then it was a Broadway musical and now there's a movie musical. Bill Bregoli saw it and (eventually) he'll tell you what he thought of it. Bill McCuddy fills us in on "The Hunger Games: Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes" which is now streaming. And Neal watched a streaming series called "Jury Duty" which follows the workings of an American jury trial through the eyes of Ronald Gladden, a juror who is unaware the entire case is fake. Everyone except him is an actor, and everything that happens is carefully planned. And no, it's not the movie of the same name starring Paully Shore. Then there's "Dream Scenario" which stars Nicolas Cage as a hapless family man who finds his life turned upside down when millions of strangers suddenly start seeing him in their dreams. Oh and there's "The Boys in the Boat" which is a 1930s-set story centered on the University of Washington's rowing team, from their Depression-era beginnings to winning gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. Plus for streaming fans there's "The Family Plan" starring Mark Wahlberg and "The Retirement Plan" starring Nicolas Cage and they're both oddly similar in a certain way. And yes, we do look back at our favorite films of 2023. So why not think of your own favorite films and compare them with ours.

Editors - Diana Fishman, Adam Lichtenstein and Mary DeChambres ACE The JURY DUTY editing team had plenty of experience cutting unscripted tv before taking on the hit Freevee series.  But is it actually an unscripted show?  To hear their fellow JURY DUTY editor Steven Rosenthal tell it, they were "using the techniques of a reality show for the purposes of a sitcom".  The end result is a series unlike any in either the unscripted or scripted comedy genres. JURY DUTY is a reality/sitcom tv series that chronicles the inner workings of a U.S. jury trial through the eyes of juror Ronald Gladden, a solar contractor from San Diego.  Ronald is unaware that his jury duty summons was not official.  Everything that happened, inside and outside the courtroom, was planned.  And everyone in the courtroom, aside from him, was an actor.  The series was produced by; Ruben Fleischer, Nick Hatton, Cody Heller, Gene Stupnitsky, Todd Schulman, Lee Eisenberg, David Bernad and Andrew Weinberg.  Jake Szymanski also produced and directed. Diana Fishman Editor Diana Fishman is known for her work on the shows; GRACE AND FRANKIE (2015), THE UCB SHOW (2016-17) and SOUTH SIDE (2019-21). Adam Lichtenstein Born with a natural love for time code, Adam showed an early preference for non-drop frame, then rose through the editorial ranks pretending to enjoy sports, overusing terms like "shots on goal", "swish", "in your face" and "that's what I'm talking about" without the slightest idea what he was talking about.  He recently completed work on the documentary, FILM GEEK (2023) directed by Richard Shepard. Mary DeChambres, ACE In addition to her work crafting the finale of JURY DUTY, Emmy®-winning editor Mary DeChambres is known for cutting unscripted hits such as; PROJECT RUNWAY (2008), AMERICAN NINJA WARRIOR (2013-23) and THE REAL WORLD (2002-03). One of my favorite shows of the year is, “Jury Duty,” produced by today's guest, Nicholas Hatton. The premise of “Jury Duty” is that a fake trial is performed totally by actors, except for one person, Ronald Gladden, who believes he's actually a juror and that the case is real. The New York State Bar Association's latest episode of its “Miranda Warnings” podcast features an interview with Alan Barinholtz talking about his newfound stardom and the success of the comedy series” Jury Duty.”Barinholtz plays judge Alan Rosen in the 8-part series streaming on Amazon's Freevee channel. The show examines what it's like to be on a sequestered jury during a civil liability case. In the show, however, all of the people are actors except for one juror named Ronald Gladden. He thinks the trial is real and he is part of a documentary on what it's like to serve on a jury.It may surprise viewers to learn that Barinholtz is a practicing attorney in Ohio and Illinois with a career spanning 40 years in personal injury litigation. He chose to pursue law after spending a few years after college trying to make it as an actor and standup comedian. Now the 72-year-old is back at it and loving every minute of it.  He is as surprised as anyone about the success of the show, which garnered 4 Emmy nominations this month.“In my wildest dreams, I never imagined that it would take off the way it has taken off,” he said. “For the life of me I don't think anyone thought it would catch fire like it did. “His sons, accomplished actors and writers Ike and Jon Barinholtz encouraged their dad to audition for “Jury Duty” when he was visiting the family in Los Angeles in late 2021. They submitted a video audition and Barinholtz secured the role a month later. In the podcast episode, Barinholtz provides a behind the scenes perspective on what it was like to work on the production, mixing scripting with improv and endless hours of rehearsal. He tells host David Miranda about the one scene where he nearly lost his composure.“When Todd the eccentric inventor comes in with the chair pants, I started chucking and did all I could to keep from cracking up,” he said.Hear more about the behind the scenes work with the cast, crew of Jury Duty, and Barinholtz's perspective on the current SAG-AFTRA strike in this episode of Miranda Warnings.

The premise of “Jury Duty” — placing a non-actor in the middle of an entirely staged trial — could have easily led the show to mean-spirited-prank territory. Instead, the cast manages to land laughs while making the person who thinks it's all real, Ronald Gladden, into a hero. For James Marsden, who plays a Hollywood jerk version of himself on the show, that was the most important thing. “I'll make an ass of myself and have fun doing it, but I never want him to be the butt of the joke,” he shares. In this episode of “The Envelope” podcast, Marsden discusses how the cast and crew managed to pull it all off, why the role interested him, and how — despite his very believable performance on ”Jury Duty” — he strives to keep his ego from ruining his reputation in real life. Leading off: After all of his appeals options have been exhausted, Leo Schofield has one last path to freedom. A Florida parole board agrees to consider his application for release. Setting aside his claims of innocence and focusing on his conduct during 35 years of incarceration, the board offers some hope. In the bonus episode of “Bone Valley,” Gilbert King and Kelsey Decker examine the board's nuanced ruling and talk to Leo about what lies ahead.Moving on: Documentarians are granted unfettered access to a civil trial and the deliberations of its jury. The panel includes Ronald Gladden, who takes his role earnestly. What he doesn't know is that the judge, the lawyers, and his eleven fellow jurors are all actors. When alternate juror James Marsden - played by the real James Marsden - gets the jury sequestered, Ronald remains unaware of the elaborate charade as he interacts with quirky characters, ridiculous situations, and bizarre testimony.“Jury Duty,” available on Amazon's Freevee, wraps its scripted trial in a real life comedy of manners featuring an unsuspecting everyman. But Ronald surprises both the audience and the producers with his heartwarming tolerance to the idiosyncratic jurors, the oddball defendant, and the nutty set pieces engineered for his benefit.  OUR SPOILER-FREE REVIEWS OF "JURY DUTY" BEGIN IN THE FINAL 8 MINUTES OF THE EPISODE.In Crime of the Week: Days of wine and lollipops.

This episode of Welcome To The Party Pal celebrates the American mockumentary television series created by Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky, and starring Ronald Gladden, Jury Duty. The series chronicles the inner workings of a jury trial through the eyes of juror Ronald Gladden, a solar contractor from San Diego, who is unaware that his jury duty summons was not official, and that everyone in the courtroom aside from him is an actor. Everything that happens, inside and outside the courtroom, is planned. In this episode hosts Michael Shields and River Jordan explore the unique premise of the show and the complicated ethical concerns that arise from it. They discuss the dynamic, eclectic cast assembled for the Jury Duty, the meticulous level of production and calculation required to make the series work, and most importantly, the "hero" at the center of everything that is the reason the first season was such a tremendous success.
