Comedic World War Two. Sarah Watt, William Chen and Jeremy Downing discuss two films that focus on Nazi-occupied Europe during World War Two that have a comedic or satirical edge: Jojo Rabbit (2019) and Inglourious Basterds (2009). We begin by discussing the situations and ways we first watched Inglourious Basterds, highlighting key reactions we had to the film the first time and upon rewatching it. We then move into a discussion of Jojo Rabbit, beginning with a comparison of music between the two films and then progressing into a chat about the film generally. We unpack the way that Jojo Rabbit plays with comedic moments, while not underplaying the horrors of the regime and war, as well as thinking about how the film connects to other movies. We celebrate the character of Col. Hans Landa and the work of Christoph Waltz. We talk about the tension in Tarantino films and how editor Sally Menke's work contributes to his films' confidence in tension. Our discussion then moves back to Jojo Rabbit and how it deals with serious moments, as well looking at how successful the satirical Hitler scenes were. We finish our discussion by exploring the performances in both films and highlighting key actors.

Quentin Tarantino is hailed as one of the most distinctive storytellers of his generation thanks to his nonlinear style and aesthetic. But everything that gave a Tarantino movie its trademark edge was thanks to his long-time editor, the late Sally Menke.
This week, Brian and Cargill come out of their shells to explain in absurd detail, the full T.U.R.T.L.E power of 1990's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! Dark as the comic at points, dopey as the cartoon at others, featuring some of Jim Henson's best work and edited by...Sally Menke(?), TMNT is a criminally underrated superhero film that tastes better on revisit than a slice of Domino's pizza.Like the show? Joan learned feature storytelling as first assistant editor with writer/director Paul Thomas Anderson and editor Dylan Tichenor on Boogie Nights and as first assistant editor with writer/director Quentin Tarantino and editor Sally Menke on both Kill Bill movies. Joan edited Being Flynn, starring Robert DeNiro and Paul Dano, for Paul Weitz. She also edited Tom Ford’s multi-award-winning A Single Man, starring Colin Firth and Julianne Moore, and the Academy Award winning short film The Accountant, directed by Ray McKinnon and Suburban Girl for Mark Klein. More recently, Joan again collaborated with Tom Ford on the acclaimed Golden Globe and BAFTA nominated Nocturnal Animals, starring Amy Adams, Jake Gyllenhaal, Michael Shannon, about an art gallery owner, haunted by her ex-husband's novel, a violent thriller she interprets as a veiled threat and a symbolic revenge tale.
Quentin Tarantino exploded onto the screen 20 years ago and in the time since, he has had but one crucial collaborator; his editor Sally Menke. The post 16. Reservoir Dogs appeared first on Steven Benedict.
WEB EXCLUSIVE: An editor is as important a component of a movie as the director. They often serve the function of sounding board and collaborator. Sally Menke was just that person...
Grab your climbing gear and don’t forget to grab your Swiss Army knife-you know in case you need to cut off your arm-and join us as we discuss Danny Boyle’s 127 Hours. From Hollywood's earliest pioneers of creation and collaboration, the pairing of director and editor has helped to push and expand the language of cinema in ways never before possible. The titans of twin thinking have discovered ways to take the unique art of film editing and create a musical language on par with peers in any other collaborative art. With the tragic death of Quentin Tarantino's editor Sally Menke, the quiet and magical relationship between editor and director becomes the subject of a long night of drinking and discussion for John and Andy. Breaking open a bottle of the Saloon's finest, the rich and inspiring work of these great artists are given a proper toast of gratitude.
