Send us a textSPECIAL NOTE: SEASON 15 OF THE GOOD, THE POD AND THE UGLY CELEBRATES THE USE OF THE PRACTICAL AND DIGITAL EFFECT KNOWN AS THE SQUIB. IRL GUN VIOLENCE IS INTOLERABLE AND RENOUNCED BUT... CINEMATIC VIOLENCE WILL BE CELEBRATED IN A WAY WILL DISTURB SOME LISTENERS.  After five years, a ban has been lifted—momentarily. For this single episode, the pod's ironclad rule against discussing a Quentin Tarantino film that has divided our hosts is broken. The director is set free. And Jack goes fugitive this week as TGTPTU discusses the all-so-deliciously-squibby DJANGO UNCHAINED (2012).   Set just a few years before the Civil War to allow Tarantino to have his favorite racial epithet spoken a stunning 110 times—yikes!—juicy bloody condoms burst all across the faux climax of this Neo-Spaghetti Western as Django (the “d” is silent, played by Jamie Foxx) takes his revenge on the Francophile plantation owner, phenology enthusiastic, and curator of the ahistorical bloodsport of Mandingo fighting viz. “Monsieur” Calvin J. Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio) for the death of immigrant German dentist+bounty-hunter Dr. King Schultz (Christoph Waltz) all lensed by regular QT collaborator Robert Richardson.  This ep, Ken takes issue with the treatment and ambiguity of sexual violence (not?) portrayed in the film, its lazy writing, and that the picture was made after and is not Inglorious Basterds; Thomas, who claims to be both a Boomer and German this episode, brings irrelevant and irreverent German Facts (an unused example: “‘Gesundheit' is a German's way of saying: How tall is your gay son?”); and Ryan violates the unspoken rule of keeping talk of Quentin Tarantino on the QT. At least all three hosts agree the triple-threat Actor+Writer+Director Tarantino is best as a just double threat.  So tune in for an episode that answers the age-old question: What if TGTPTU hosts finally take on Quentin Tarantino—and no one does an impression?  Next week Jack returns. Content Warning: Django Unchained not merely contains but is brimming with a specific racial slur using a hard-r by characters of various races and classes as directed (and written) to do so by a White filmmaker. Django Unchained also contains, and glosses over, sexual violence.   THEME SONG BY: WEIRD A.I.Email: thegoodthepodandtheugly@gmail.comFacebook: https://m.facebook.com/TGTPTUInstagram: https://instagram.com/thegoodthepodandtheugly?igshid=um92md09kjg0Bluesky: @goodpodugly.bsky.socialYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6mI2plrgJu-TB95bbJCW-gLetterboxd (follow us!):Podcast: goodpoduglyKen: Ken KoralRyan: Ryan Tobias

In this episode of the WN Movie Talk Podcast, I take an in-depth look at Hugo (2011), the visually stunning 3D masterpiece directed by the legendary Martin Scorsese. Known for his gritty, violent dramas like Goodfellas and The Departed, why did Scorsese pivot to this family-friendly adventure? We explore the director's motivations, the film's ground-breaking use of 3D technology, and its heartfelt tribute to the magic of cinema.Based on Brian Selznick's award-winning novel The Invention of Hugo Cabret, Hugo tells the story of a young orphan (played by Asa Butterfield) living in a Paris train station who uncovers the forgotten legacy of pioneering filmmaker Georges Méliès, portrayed brilliantly by Ben Kingsley. Méliès' journey from a celebrated illusionist and filmmaker to a forgotten relic of a bygone era is deeply emotional and steeped in themes of art, creativity, and redemption—elements that resonate powerfully with Scorsese's sensibilities and his own dedication to film preservation. The stellar cast also includes Chloë Grace Moretz, Sacha Baron Cohen, and Jude Law, with a supporting crew that brought Scorsese's vision to life—cinematographer Robert Richardson and production designer Dante Ferretti.Join me as I discuss the film's themes, the nuanced performance by Kingsley, its place in Scorsese's career, and why Hugo remains a timeless ode to the art of filmmaking. Meticulously composed on several different film formats, masterfully edited in a radical, experimental style, and structured as a steady unraveling of institutional footings, the film stands as one of the finest formal evocations of political radicalization ever made for the silver screen. We discuss the film's groundbreaking formalism, how it creates an unmooring effect on behalf of its viewers, and charts the cacophonous frenzy of conspiracy thinking. Then, we talk about where Stone sits in relation to the film's protagonist Jim Garrison, what the film gets very wrong, and why the minutiae doesn't ultimately matter in the borader context of its critique of empire. Finally we look to the upcoming election, share our personal thoughts on the outcomes, and what it means for Palestinian resistance and political movements in our own country.Follow Sami Gold on Twitter.....Our theme song is "Mirror" by Chris Fish.

Born To Watch - A Movie Podcast

"A Few Good Men" is a gripping courtroom drama testament to the power of compelling storytelling, strong performances, and sharp dialogue. Directed by Rob Reiner and based on Aaron Sorkin's play, the film has become a classic in the genre. It delivers a powerful narrative that delves into themes of honour, duty, and the complexities of military life.OverviewThe film centres around the court-martial of two U.S. Marines, Lance Corporal Harold Dawson (Wolfgang Bodison) and Private First Class Louden Downey (James Marshall), who are accused of murdering fellow Marine William Santiago at the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base in Cuba. The case seems straightforward, but as the defence team, led by the inexperienced Navy lawyer Lieutenant Daniel Kaffee (Tom Cruise), digs deeper, it becomes clear that there is more to the story than meets the eye.Kaffee, known for his penchant for plea bargains and lack of trial experience, is initially reluctant to take the case seriously. However, with the support of Lieutenant Commander JoAnne Galloway (Demi Moore), an idealistic and determined lawyer, and Lieutenant Sam Weinberg (Kevin Pollak), Kaffee begins to uncover a conspiracy that reaches the highest levels of the Marine Corps. Their investigation leads them to the formidable Colonel Nathan R. Jessup (Jack Nicholson), whose belief in the importance of a strong military defence directly conflicts with the principles of justice and accountability.PerformancesThe cast of "A Few Good Men" is stellar, with each actor bringing depth and nuance to their roles. Tom Cruise delivers one of his finest performances as Lieutenant Kaffee, transitioning from a cocky, indifferent lawyer to a passionate advocate for justice. Cruise's portrayal captures the character's growth and determination, making his journey believable and compelling.Demi Moore shines as Lieutenant Commander Galloway, a character-driven by a strong moral compass and unwavering dedication to her clients. Moore's performance adds a layer of intensity and integrity to the film, highlighting the challenges faced by women in the military. However, Jack Nicholson's portrayal of Colonel Jessup steals the show. Nicholson's commanding presence and delivery of the film's most famous line, "You can't handle the truth!" have become iconic. His performance perfectly captures the arrogance and conviction of a man who believes that his actions, no matter how morally questionable, are justified in the name of national security.Cinematography and DirectionRob Reiner's direction is precise and effective, allowing the tension to build steadily throughout the film. The courtroom scenes, in particular, are masterfully shot, with Reiner using close-ups and dynamic camera angles to emphasise the intensity of the legal battle. The film's pacing is impeccable, ensuring that the audience remains engaged from start to finish.Robert Richardson's cinematography complements Reiner's direction. Its focus on stark lighting and tight framing adds to the film's dramatic atmosphere. The use of shadows and light enhances the visual appeal and symbolises the moral ambiguities and hidden truths at the story's heart.Screenplay and DialogueAaron Sorkin's screenplay is the backbone of "A Few Good Men," showcasing his talent for crafting sharp, intelligent dialogue. The film is filled with memorable lines and exchanges that drive the plot forward and provide insight into the characters' motivations and beliefs. Sorkin's writing is thought-provoking and entertaining, perfectly balancing drama and wit.The courtroom confrontations are particularly well-written, with the back-and-forth between Kaffee and Jessup as the film's climax. These scenes are a masterclass in tension and conflict, with each line of dialogue carefully constructed to build toward the explosive conclusion.Themes and Cultural SignificanceAt its core, "A Few Good Men" is a film about the clash between duty and morality and the often blurred line between right and wrong. The story raises important questions about the nature of authority, the ethics of military command, and the cost of protecting a nation. It challenges the audience to consider the balance between security and accountability and the importance of standing up for truth and justice, even in the face of overwhelming opposition. The film's exploration of these themes remains relevant today, as issues of military conduct and governmental transparency continue to be hotly debated. A Few Good Men serves as a reminder of the importance of integrity and courage, both in the legal system and in everyday life.Character DevelopmentOne of the strengths of "A Few Good Men" is its well-developed characters, each of whom can evolve throughout the film. Kaffee's transformation from a complacent lawyer to a passionate defender of justice is central to the narrative, and Cruise's performance effectively captures this growth.Galloway's character provides a strong counterpoint to Kaffee, embodying the ideals of dedication and perseverance. Her unwavering commitment to uncovering the truth catalyses Kaffee's own journey, and Moore's portrayal brings depth and complexity to the role.Colonel Jessup, while ostensibly the antagonist, is portrayed with enough nuance to make him a compelling and, at times, sympathetic character. Nicholson's performance ensures that Jessup is not merely a villain but a man whose rigid beliefs and sense of duty have led him down a morally questionable path.Historical Context and ImpactReleased in 1992, "A Few Good Men" came at a time when the United States grappled with military ethics and accountability issues, particularly in the wake of the Iran-Contra affair and the Gulf War. The film's focus on a military trial resonated with audiences and critics alike, sparking discussions about the responsibilities of those in power and the consequences of unchecked authority. The film's critical and commercial success helped to cement its status as a classic, earning multiple Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor for Jack Nicholson, and Best Screenplay for Aaron Sorkin. Its enduring popularity is a testament to its powerful storytelling and the relevance of its themes."A Few Good Men" is a masterful legal drama that combines outstanding performances, sharp writing, and expert direction to create a thought-provoking and emotionally resonant film. Its exploration of duty, morality, and justice remains as powerful today as it was upon its release, making it a timeless classic that continues to captivate audiences. For the Born to Watch podcast, "A Few Good Men" represents a significant entry in the legal drama genre and a film that challenges viewers to consider the complexities of honour and duty in a world where the lines between right and wrong are often blurred. Whether you're revisiting it for the umpteenth time or watching it for the first, "A Few Good Men" is a cinematic experience that promises to leave a lasting impact.

A few years into her career as a camera assistant, Amy decided to go to grad school at AFI. She shot many student short films for free before meeting writer and director Kasi Lemmons. Amy could tell from page one that the script for Eve's Bayou was something personal and special. They made the short film together, then over the course of three years, Lemmons raised enough money and interest to turn Eve's Bayou into a feature. It was Amy's first movie as a cinematographer and it became her first big breakout. One of Amy's frequent collaborators was director Craig Brewer. She was given a copy of his first film on VHS, then the two met to discuss making 2005's Hustle & Flow. “I think the beauty of where my collaboration with Craig and the process of making the movie was what the movie was about. The two folded over on each other. I mean, it's the idea of making music or making a movie by whatever means necessary. And there was something that became so apparent in the process. For example, we tried on a whole bunch of different formats, like, what are we going to shoot? At one point we were going to shoot Mini DV, because that's what Craig knew and then we settled into Super 16.” She and Brewer went on to work together on Black Snake Moan and the 2011 Footloose remake. Throughout her career, Amy has enjoyed collaborating with directors on smaller movies. Her most recent project, A Nice Indian Boy, had a very low budget and it had to be shot quickly before the actors strike. “It is so cool to have a really funny rom com that's gay and Indian. It would have been great to have more time and more money to make that movie, but I love all of the things that came together to make this simple little movie. It's really important to me to be able to make a movie that means something to a slightly different community.” Amy recently received the ASC Presidents Award, which recognizes her long career as a cinematographer and a mentor to new cinematographers. She's also an artist in residence at Loyola Marymount University, where she teaches film classes and mentors students making short films. You can see Amy's recent work on the show Parish with Giancarlo Esposito on AMC+. A Nice Indian Boy premiered at the SXSW Film Festival to critical acclaim, and is seeking distribution. Igyekszünk a filmet feminista szempontból is részletesen boncolgatni, kritizálva a rosszabbul öregedő részeket. Mitől működik a film zenéje? Miket idéz meg a képeiben Robert Richardson kamerája? Hogy állnak Tarantinónak az óriási léptékű akciójelenetek? Megbeszéljük az első és második rész közti jelentős különbségeket is, és hosszasan elemezzük a finálét. The Equalizer 3 movie! Holy cow. How often does it happen on a podcast for a 35 year old show that a new movie in the franchise comes out? Not often at all. For Chris and Chuck, it's a lot of firsts - the first podcast field trip (to a Chicago suburb halfway between our respective suburbs), the first mid-season bonus episode, and the first time we've seen the character Robert McCall, whom we have discussed so very much, on the big screen. It's a roaring rampage of bloody Equalizing justice. On the whole it's consistent with the first two movies, but also a departure in significant ways. Air is a 2023 American biographical sports drama film directed by Ben Affleck and written by Alex Convery. The film is based on true events about the origin of Air Jordan, a basketball shoeline, of which a Nike employee seeks to strike a business deal with rookie player Michael Jordan. It stars Matt Damon, Affleck, Jason Bateman, Marlon Wayans, Chris Messina, Chris Tucker, and Viola Davis. The project was announced in April 2022, with Affleck set to direct, as well as star and produce alongside Damon through their newly-formed production company Artists Equity. Filming took place that summer, with Affleck reuniting with his frequent collaborators, cinematographer Robert Richardson and editor William Goldenberg. While Michael Jordan was not involved with the production, he did meet with Affleck and offered several suggestions, including the casting of Davis as his mother. Originally set to premiere on the streaming service Amazon Prime Video, distributor Amazon Studios opted to release the film theatrically first after positive test screenings, making it the first Amazon title since Late Night (2019) to be released in theaters without simultaneously premiering on Prime Video. Air had its premiere at South by Southwest on March 18, 2023, and was theatrically released in the United States on April 5, by Amazon Studios. The film received critical acclaim, particularly for Affleck's direction, Convery's screenplay, and the performances of the cast. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/popcorn-junkies/message

To tell the story of Emancipation, director Antoine Fuqua and cinematographer Robert Richardson were influenced by the colors in the famous photo "Whipped Peter," whose story and the photograph of his scarred back is still one of the most famous photos documenting the brutality of slavery today. They chose to desaturate the images to a sepia-tone with just hints of color. Antoine also felt the lack of color reflected the world of a slave- it's bleak and hopeless, and he wanted the film to look beautiful but brutal. The Louisiana swamps Peter must navigate through as he escapes also looked more eerie and otherworldly with a lack of color. Antoine says he and Bob spent a lot of time discussing the film, designing shots, laying out storyboards, and going over the story more than with any other cinematographer he worked with. Antoine wanted Emancipation to show that a movie about slavery could also be a taut, entertaining thriller. They both wanted to create an action movie with sustained intensity throughout, but at its heart, Bob saw the film as a love story about a man fighting against insurmountable obstacles, on the run to get back to his family. They decided to show the caring Peter has for his family in the opening scene of the film, as Peter gently washes his wife's feet. Bob chose to use long, sweeping one shots to build the tension throughout the film, rather than relying on quick cutting. This allowed the tension to build as the slaves run away into the swamps. He and Antoine didn't do multiple takes or alternate shots if they didn't think they needed it. Antoine created tension within the railroad camp scenes with many layers of action- it wasn't necessarily what was going on right in front of Will Smith's character, but also what was happening to the men and overseers behind him. As a director, Antoine always wanted to work with Bob Richardson, but at first Bob said no to shooting Emancipation. Bob says that as a white man, he didn't really feel comfortable making a story about race. Antoine points out that most human beings could feel compassion for someone else's story, and slavery exists across races. Though it wasn't Bob's personal history, Emancipation was telling the story of our history in America. Antoine Fuqua and Robert Richardson are currently shooting a second project together. IN DE PALMA DA HAND, A TRACH  Martin Scorsese and Brian De Palma were best buddies in the free wheelin' 1970s who, by the late 1990s, were Hollywood legends with instantly recognizable cinematic styles. Cage was in his box office prime in in 1998 and 1999 with De Palma's SNAKE EYES and Scorsese's BRINGING OUT THE DEAD. Two old timers whose kinetic stylish flourishes met their match in big studio era Cage? Perfect, right? Snake Eyes has energy to spare behind and in front of the camera but is it empty calories? It's a follow-up to director De Palma and screenwriter David Koepp's 1996 smash hit Mission: Impossible, which similarly uses deep-pocketed studio resources to go all-indulgence with obsessively elaborate set pieces. It begins with a 15-minute tracking shot! Yay, cinema!  Bringing Out the Dead reunites Scorsese with Taxi Driver writer Paul Schrader and composer Elmer Bernstein. Can the old guys recapture the magic of their 1976 masterpiece while adding Robert Richardson's halo-centric lighting and a crack supporting cast? Cage plays an NYC EMT  who can't sleep and sees ghosts.
