The Prince Andrew interview on BBC Newsnight came about after Buckingham Palace sought to clear his name amid growing scrutiny over his ties to Jeffrey Epstein. The idea was first pitched when Prince Andrew's then-private secretary, Amanda Thirsk, was in discussions with BBC journalist Emily Maitlis and Newsnight editor Esme Wren about a possible interview. Initially, the palace wanted to use the interview to refute allegations that Prince Andrew had sexually abused Virginia Giuffre, who alleged she was trafficked to him by Epstein when she was 17. Thirsk and Andrew saw it as an opportunity to publicly address the controversy, believing it would help him regain credibility. The interview was arranged through direct negotiations between Thirsk and the Newsnight team, with Prince Andrew ultimately agreeing to the sit-down, which was filmed inside Buckingham Palace in November 2019.However, the interview turned into a public relations disaster for Prince Andrew. Instead of clearing his name, his lack of remorse, bizarre explanations, and contradictions only fueled greater criticism. He infamously claimed he could not have been with Giuffre on the alleged night because he was at Pizza Express in Woking and insisted he could not sweat due to a medical condition. The broadcast led to intense backlash, forcing Andrew to step back from royal duties days later. BBC journalist Sam McAlister, who negotiated the interview, later revealed that Andrew and his team failed to anticipate how damning his answers would sound, leading to what is now regarded as one of the most disastrous royal interviews in history.to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.com

For ten years Sam McAlister was the interviews producer on BBC 2's flagship news programme Newsnight, securing head-to-head pieces with Silicon Valley CEOs, world leaders and Hollywood stars. A former barrister, she turned to journalism after a successful career in criminal law and has since negotiated with everyone from Buckingham Palace to the White House, Facebook to Tesla. Sam is now a Visiting Senior Fellow in Practice at LSE Law School, where she teaches negotiation. Working in a largely unseen role on Newsnight, Sam undertook the delicate negotiations that underpin some of the biggest exclusive interviews in British news.  Sam secured include exclusive interviews with Sheryl Sandberg, Justin Trudeau, Bill Clinton, Elon Musk, Benjamin Netanyahu, Trevor Noah, and Eric Schmidt.  Her book Scoops: Behind the Scenes of the BBC's Most Shocking Interviews, offers a backstage pass to some of these unforgettable moments. Most notably Sam led negotiations for the ground-breaking interview with HRH Prince Andrew. The first time a senior royal had agreed to such a journalistic interview, and in the midst of an international scandal, it went on to make headlines around the world and have a serious impact on the Royal Family and in April the story became the Netflix smash hot - ‘Scoop', starring Billie Piper and Gillian Anderson. At Media 360 in Brighton, Sam joined Fresh Air Production's Director of Content Michaella Hallam to talk about the biggest risks she's ever taken, Prince Andrew's approach to risk and why its important for brands to be innovative and take risks. I'd Rather Be Reading
Sam McAlister on Securing the Infamous Prince Andrew Interview for BBC's Newsnight, the Basis of Netflix's New Film Scoop

I'd Rather Be Reading

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 24, 2024 34:17

One of the buzziest films of the month is Netflix's new movie Scoop starring Gillian Anderson and Rufus Sewell—it came out April 5 and is about the BBC's process of securing Prince Andrew to appear on its program Newsnight, which he ultimately did in November 2019. This interview, which largely touched on his association with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, ended Andrew's career as a working royal; his interview with Emily Maitlis aired on a Saturday, and by that next Wednesday, he resigned from his position as a senior royal. Today on the show we have the person responsible for securing that landmark interview, Sam McAlister, who was a producer and booker at the BBC at the time. Now, it's important to note—and Sam and I do this in our conversation today—how absolutely impossible the prospect of getting a senior working royal to sit down and talk about his association with a convicted sex offender is. After all, the unofficial motto of the British royal family is “Never complain, never explain.” Members of the royal family rarely give interviews, and they never give interviews where they are already set up to fail. But Andrew's ego led the way, and not only was the interview allowed to happen at Buckingham Palace, but it was allowed to air, as Andrew thought he did a great job. Oh, the joys of self-delusion. In the film, Scoop, Sam is played by actress Billie Piper, who called Sam an “unsung hero.” If you've seen Scoop, while Andrew will no doubt draw viewers in, it's actually Sam who is the star of the movie, and as I say today on the show, a central theme is the story of women at the top of their game banding together to change history. That's exactly what happened here. I interviewed Sam both for the show and for a piece I wrote about her for Marie Claire, and in doing so I watched the Newsnight interview for the first time since November 2019, and it is ridiculously painful to watch. Sam, in her book, calls the interview on Andrew's part “a masterclass in how to destroy your life.” By that Wednesday, as I said, Andrew had left royal duty, and in January 2022, his mother, Queen Elizabeth, stripped Andrew of all of his royal patronages and military titles, in a final coup de grace for her reported favorite son. It's also important to note that, in addition to just being associated with Jeffrey Epstein, Andrew was accused of sexual assault by Virginia Guiffre, who alleged that she was 17 when he had sex with her. In February 2022, Andrew settled out of court with Guiffre, and he has repeatedly, fastidiously, and continuously up to present day denied any of these allegations. Sam's book, Scoops: Behind the Scenes of the BBC's Most Shocking Interviews, came out in September 2022 and became the basis of Scoop, which is out now on Netflix. In the book, Sam—who is a single mother and a former lawyer—details booking many hard-to-book guests, Prince Andrew of course, but also Julian Assange, Amy Schumer, Stormy Daniels, and so many others. I am so excited for you to meet the dynamo that is Sam McAlister and learn about what she calls “45 minutes of TV history.” Scoops: Behind the Scenes of the BBC's Most Shocking Interviews by Sam McAlister My piece for Marie Claire about Sam, “Don't Be Fooled: ‘Scoop' Isn't About One Man—It's About the Power of Women”

This week, Jacki and Lyle are back with a follow-up to their preview of the Netflix film, Scoop, starring Gillian Anderson, Billie Piper and Rufus Sewell. Based on the book of the same name by Sam McAlister, played by Piper, this Netflix drama did not disappoint as it recreated the story of one of the most notorious television interviews in history - Emily Maitlis and her interview with Prince Andrew regarding his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein and allegations of sexual abuse towards young women being trafficked by Epstein. Jacki and Lyle both praise the fantastic performances of the central cast, with Anderson as Maitlis, Piper as McAlister, Sewell as Prince Andrew and Keeley Hawes as Andrew's private secretary Amanda Thirsk all drawing particular acclaim. Jacki asks for Lyle's opinion on how Maitlis' character was depicted in the film, before assessing how Andrew represents what many in the PR industry would describe as a 'problematic client', with reference to his insistence on going about things his own way rather than listen to experts around him. Lyle draws comparisons between how it would appear McAlister obtained this interview and how Martin Bashir secured his interview with Diana, with the former seemingly working with Andrew's team to help them towards what they felt was the best course of action, and the latter having recently been found to have used manipulative tactics to coerce the then Princess of Wales into being interviewed. Jacki ultimately questions, with reference to the Netflix drama, why the Palace elected to press ahead with the Newsnight interview with little to none of their own conditions put in place, with Lyle asking whether this can be considered a turning point in securing the future of the programme itself.Artwork by DimosoMusic by Lyle FultonGet in touch via lyle@dimoso.com or info@dimoso.comMore information at www.dimoso.com and www.therestispr.comFollow us on Twitter - @TheRestIsPR Hosted on Acast. The new Amy Winehouse biopic is finally out, but Back to Black has bitterly divided critics and fans. Some are disgusted by the ‘sanitisation' of key figures such as her dad Mitch Winehouse and former husband Blake Fielder-Civil, while others are delighted to see a film that doesn't revel in the sordid details of her drug addiction. We get into the thorny debate around the Sam Taylor-Johnson directed ‘love story', starring Marisa Abela and Jack O'Connell, as well as the wild recent reporting on how Mitch is currently suing two of Amy's best friends for auctioning off items she gave them. On this episode of Nerd's Talking The Podcast, we delve into the intriguing world of journalism and scandal with our review of the new Netflix film, "Scoop." Directed by Philip Martin, this British biographical drama takes us behind the scenes of one of the most controversial interviews in recent memory. "Scoop" stars an impressive cast including Gillian Anderson, Keeley Hawes, Billie Piper, and Rufus Sewell. The film tells the gripping story of how the women of "Newsnight" secured Prince Andrew's infamous 2019 interview about his friendship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The screenplay by Peter Moffat and Geoff Bussetil is adapted from the 2022 book "Scoops: Behind the Scenes of the BBC's Most Shocking Interviews" by former Newsnight editor Sam McAlister. The interview, described as the "scoop of the decade," became the public catalyst for the downfall of Prince Andrew. It focused on Andrew's relationship with Epstein and allegations of sexual assault of a minor. The film provides a dramatic retelling of the negotiation process between the women of "Newsnight" and Buckingham Palace, highlighting the challenges they faced in securing the interview. Described as more than just a car crash but "a plane crashing into an oil tanker, causing a tsunami, triggering a nuclear explosion," the interview had far-reaching implications for the royal family and the British monarchy. Join us as we discuss the performances, the storytelling, and the impact of "Scoop" in this episode of Nerd's Talking The Podcast. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/nerdstalking/support

This week, Jacki and Lyle discuss the upcoming Netflix drama, Scoop, based on the book Scoops: Behind The Scenes of the BBC's Most Shocking Interviews written by former BBC producer Sam McAlister. Specifically, the film centres on arguably the most shocking interview of the 21st century - Newsnight's interview with Prince Andrew about his association with Jeffrey Epstein and allegations of sexual assault of a minor against Andrew which he denies. The biographical drama stars Gillian Anderson as Emily Maitlis, Billie Piper as McAlister, and Rufus Sewell in the role of Prince Andrew. Directed by Philip Martin, it depicts the process of securing the 2019 interview, and is due for release in early April. Jacki and Lyle discuss similarities between this dramatisation and those recently released depicting real-life events, such as the recent Alan Bates vs. The Post Office on ITV. Lyle asks whether PRs will need to become more aware for the need to control the narrative of a particular story before scriptwriters and TV producers get there first! Jacki opens up on her intrigue about how the film will recreate the moments that led to the interview itself, with the efforts of McAlister and Maitlis to secure the interview yet to have been dramatised on screen. Lyle and Jacki then discuss what the film's directors are hoping the audience will take from the film, with Lyle mentioning that this is a consideration at every level of performance art. Today we look at a long awaited report, which says women born in the 1950s affected by changes to the state pension age should receive thousands of pounds in compensation. The report suggests the so called Waspi (Women Against State Pension Inequality) women, should receive a payout of between £1,000 and £2,950. Some 2.6 million women were affected by the change in the pension age, and if everyone got the upper end of that, the government would face a bill of up to £7.7bn. Neither the government or Labour have so far committed to paying this. Negotiation is a dialogue between two or more people to reach a mutually beneficial agreement. These skills are essential both in the workplace as well as in our personal life. It's the key to getting ahead and getting the outcomes we want.  But successful negotiation requires self-awareness, preparation, and practice. My guest, Sam McAlister, mastered this art after relentlessly pursuing scoops for her entire career. She'll share her secret sauce with us in this episode. As the BAFTA nominated interview producer on BBC Newsnight, Sam has negotiated with everyone from Buckingham Palace to The White House, Facebook to Tesla. With skills honed over a decade in the BBC's elite news programs, she persuades reluctant individuals to participate in a news program renowned for its rigor and bite and has been called the "booker extraordinaire." During our conversation, Sam explains how she secured some of the most exclusive interviews in journalism. She also offers her best tips for successful negotiation, including common mistakes to avoid and how to gain leverage even if we don't have a lot to offer.
