Francesca Rudkin: I've got an idea for the next Netflix hit

Have I got an idea for Netflix - although I'm unlikely the first to have it. The shock announcement late this week that Peter Burling was leaving Team New Zealand made me wish Netflix would take us inside the world of match racing and the America's Cup. It's got everything that's made F1 such a TV hit - big money, big personalities, big egos, big competition - with a solid dose of life-threatening risk thrown in. Who wouldn't watch it? You would, right? I don't really give a flying hoot whether the America's Cup comes back to New Zealand. I don't think a lot of Kiwis do, even if they have cherished memories of past Cups. I think we all now understand the nature of this sport. It's driven by a wealthy few, and paid for by aspirational brands. It will do whatever it needs to thrive as an event. It doesn't stop us getting behind the sailors and the incredible design teams when racing begins. But we don't feel attached in the same way we once were. But back to my point - it would make for great TV. There's always some kind of potential ‘blowup' lurking near the running of the America's Cup and Team New Zealand - location negotiations, rivalries and disputes, and fascinating characters all over it. In January, skipper Sir Ben Ainslie and INEOS chef Jim Ratcliffe suddenly split - and in the last couple of days, INEOS Britannia announced it was abandoning its challenge for the next America's Cup after failing to reach a settlement with Ainslie's team Athena Racing. Can't you just see Jimmy Spithill being the resident expert talking us through it all? What good fun! The parting of Peter Burling and Team New Zealand is probably as simple as it sounds. This is what Team New Zealand Chief Executive Grant Dalton told Ryan Bridge on Drive on Friday when he asked what happened…. AUDIO: We just ran out of time basically….. we couldn't get going… we're in new territory trying to win it for the fourth time… We got to get going.” Who knows if Burling was aware of the time constraints on him to make a decision. Dalton says money and time were issues. Burling is apparently surprised it has come to this. But they both claim to be parting on good terms, and I believe it. Burling stepped up when he was 26 with a bunch of cyclists and his trusty sidekick Blair Tuke to win the America's Cup in Bermuda. He then went on to defend it twice more. It's an incredible record for such a young athlete, and it's no surprise that in-between the four-year America's Cup cycle he's gone on to lead the Black Foils Sail GP team and set up an environmental charity. I wish him well. But once again, isn't it fascinating to watch a team do whatever they have to do to win? If you hate participation certificates, you'll love the cut throat nature of the America's Cup. Just like we do with F1. Except when it comes to Liam Lawson of course. If you have any questions about the show send us a message. The line between strength and weakness blurs when our panel tackles the explosive question: Is it weakness for a woman to stay with a man who cheats, or simply acknowledging reality? This charged discussion ignites a fascinating exploration of how deeply men and women misunderstand each other in modern relationships. Our hosts and guests unpeel layers of gender dynamics that few dare to address publicly. A standout moment occurs when male panelists argue that showing vulnerability often backfires despite women claiming they want emotionally open partners. "There's a reason why men feel that we can't open up to you. Just think about that," challenges one guest, leaving the room in thoughtful silence before erupting into passionate debate about whether men and women are fundamentally wired to process emotions differently. The conversation flows naturally into examining Netflix's controversial "Adolescence" series, questioning its portrayal of violence and misogyny in youth. We then venture into profound territory, unanimously agreeing that something must exist beyond physical death while marveling at the consciousness of other species – including dolphins' surprising capacity for depression and complex communication.Perhaps most revealing is our unanimous support for a gym owner's right to create female-only spaces that exclude transgender women, showing how even politically charged topics can find common ground when framed through personal choice and safety. Throughout, musical artists Aya Blue and Corey Cosmos bring fresh perspectives before treating listeners to samples of their upcoming releases.Ready to challenge your perspectives on relationships, consciousness, and gender politics? Meet Omar AlMaeena and Safwan Modir, founders of RedSea Camel Company and stars of the hit Netflix series 'Camel Quest.' Tired of their jobs and longing for something new, Omar and Safwan took a big leap in 2021, leaving their previous work in finance, entertainment and hospitality and founded a camel breeding farm in the largely-bucolic Qassim region of Saudi Arabia - not an easy leap for two guys from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia's second largest city. When they launched Redsea Camel Company, they became the first camel owners to incorporate a company and treat Camel breeding as a business, with packages and camel care for customers and digitizing the whole process. Omar and Safwan are also into camel racing, and created the first Saudi Camel racing team.  They knew their journey was going to be interesting - why not film it? So they did. And the two launched a film company and filmed their journey in forming their camel breeding and camel racing businesses, which got picked up by NETFLIX and within 48 hours, their show "Camel Quest" made it to Netflix's top 10 ranking in the region. Omar and Safwan talk with The TWENTY30 about the businesses they're running and share anecdotes from their journey as entrepreneurs in this new and growing field in Saudi Arabia. They also use the podcast to make a special announcement about what's next! Before the conversation, co-hosts Hanaa Almoaibed and Lucien Zeigler catch up and debate a phrase in English that differs depending on which coast of the United States you're from. They also read some interesting feedback on previous shows and tease some upcoming LIVE interviews in Riyadh this month.  After the interview, the hosts jump into some of the latest news on Saudi Arabia, including new measures to fight corruption, a decision on school uniforms in Saudi Arabia, a big car zone at KAEC, and an interesting drama that played out over X on boxing in Saudi Arabia.

52. Hot Girls Updated: Why "Pornstar" Rachel Bernard wants to talk ten years after the Netflix hit

Scott Carney Investigates

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 15, 2024 72:39

In 2015 Netflix aired a documentary about the seedy underbelly of the Miami porn industry called Hot Girls Wanted. Two filmmakers and executive producer Rashida Jones followed the stories of three 18 and 19 year olds who answered craigslist ads to have sex on camera. Over the course of the next three months the women were pulled ever-deeper into disturbing and even violent scenes in what is known as “abuse porn.” I was horrified. Statistics they showed by the Kinsey Institute showed that 40% of online pornography features violence against women. The average porn star barely lasts three months in the industry. The end credits reported that all three women left the business shortly after the documentary wrapped up. Since principle photography began about ten years ago, and I wanted to know where the women from the film ended up. I reached out to all three filmmakers and never got a response. But I did manage to connect with Rachel Bernard the woman featured in the film poster who went by “Ava Taylor” at the time. She recounted how the filmmakers had a very specific agenda behind their project that required her to look like a victim, when the reality was much more complicated. After the film's release they flew her out to a university campus to talk about the horrors that she experienced, but unlike what the film reported, Bernard was still actively performing, and according to her, thriving. During the meeting Rashida Jones asked her if she was “going to quit the industry” now, and offered to pay for Bernard to pursue her dream of becoming a photographer at the Art Institute of Chicago. Bernard was excited by the generous offer and accepted it on the spot. But once she began tweeting about her complex feelings about the film the tuition payments dried up. In our interview, Bernard tells me how while the filmmakers Ronna Gradus and Jill Bauer ostensibly wanted to expose the dark side of the porn industry, they also ended up exploiting the 18-year-old women who they were covering. In one jarring irony as the filmmakers were taking the cover shot for movie poster (and thumbnail in Netflix's queue) the session followed the same scripted playbook of the actual pornography shoots she did for her day job. “They told me to ‘pose a little more sexy' and now look ‘sad' while she sat in her own bedroom in in her underwear. The net effect was a series of compounding exploitations. Not only were the women being pressured to perform increasingly violent acts on camera for actual pornographers, but the Bauer, Gradus and Jones used Bernard's story to sell multi-million dollar film production deals at Netflix. In this interview with Bernard we talk about how her life has moved on over the course of ten years, her thoughts on ethical porn consumption, the good and bad parts of the industry and the rise of OnlyFans where girls like her have more control over how they appear online. And what she told me made me reconsider almost everything about my initial reaction to the show when I first watched it. Bernard speculates that Jone's offer was really a ploy for the documentary crew to sell a follow-up TV series to Netflix that eventually aired under the title Hot Girls Wanted: Turned On. Bernard had to drop out of school and take a minimum wage job to cover her expenses.

So excited to share my rich and nuanced convo with Attica and Tembi Locke. I discovered this dynamic sister duo after devouring their Netflix limited series, FROM SCRATCH, starring Zoe Saldana. Once my tear ducts could no longer produce any more tears, I immediately had to find out who was behind this beautiful show.  Tembi is a New York Times best-selling author, TV producer, actor, and screenwriter. Her memoir, From Scratch: A Memoir of Love, Sicily, and Finding Home, is a 2019 Reese's Book Club pick and NYT bestseller. Alongside Hello Sunshine, Tembi and Attica adapted the book as a limited series for Netflix, which trended in the top 10 globally in 84 countries for weeks on end following its October 2022 release. Attica is an award-winning screenwriter, TV producer, and novelist. She recently co-created and served as showrunner on From Scratch. Other screen credits include Little Fires Everywhere, When They See Us, and Empire. Locke is also NY-Times best-selling author of five novels: Heaven, My Home; Bluebird, Bluebird; Pleasantville; The Cutting Season; and Black Water Rising. They are delightful humans, astute creators and I can't wait to watch their star continue to rise! In this chat, we dive into: -Why it's necessary to come up for air/refuel -How sometimes the things you fear the most end up being the greatest gifts -How to own your creative vision while staying open to collaboration   LINK IN BIO!
