Academy Award-nominated screenwriter Jon Spaihts has joined Netflix's live-action adaptation of the popular video game “Gears of War,” marking another attempt to bring the franchise to the big screen. Spaihts, who is best known for his work on “Dune” and “Doctor Strange,” will adapt one of gaming's richest and most acclaimed video game sagas with over 40 million copies sold. The “Gears of War” franchise centers on a society divided and on the brink of collapse, facing total extinction by the monstrous Locust alien race. The ragtag Delta Squad, led by disgraced sergeant Marcus Fenix, is charged with leading humanity's last stand. Netflix's partnership with The Coalition aims to first adapt the game into a live-action feature film, followed by an adult animated series, with the potential for more stories to follow. Spaihts is a master storyteller with a talent for creating epic, science-fiction universes, and he truly loves “Gears of War,” according to The Coalition. Previous attempts to adapt the game have been unsuccessful. Universal hired F. Scott Frazier to write an adaptation in 2018, but no other moves were made on that project. With Netflix's hiring of Spaihts, “Gears of War” fans have much to look forward to given the screenwriter's wealth of experience adapting major genre IP. Source: Variety

In the first segment, Tiokasin speaks with award-winning filmmaker and photographer Deborah Anderson, director, producer and writer of the new documentary film, Women of the White Buffalo. The film shows the lives of the modern day Native women as we listen to their stories of loss, suicide, murder and epidemic meth addiction among their community, mirrored by their deep ancestral roots, traditional ceremony, prayer and hope. Women of the White Buffalo features testimonials from nine women from the Lakota Nation, ranging in age from 10 to 98, living on the Pine Ridge and Rosebud reservations in South Dakota. Deborah's work has graced the covers of pop music albums and magazines, as well as the walls of an expansive clientele of private homes and landmark hotels worldwide. Of Indigenous, Black, Irish and Scottish descent, her photographic work has hung in galleries both in Europe and the US, including the world-class Leica Galleries, which have hosted three shows for her Women Of The White Buffalo series. More information at https://womenofthewhitebuffalo.com/homeIn the second segment, Tiokasin speaks with Scott Frazier, a Santee and enrolled Crow Tribe citizen. He is currently Executive Director and Indigenous Liaison for Project WET, and recently he formed a new company called Project Indigenous, with the mission of promoting wellness, diversity and environmental consultation to Indigenous peoples. Tiokasin and Scott discuss the 150th anniversary of Yellowstone National Park, which is taking place in 2022. As a highly accomplished and driven leader, Scott keeps a rigorous schedule of public speaking engagements and guest appearances teaching Native environmental education. He has been involved in buffalo issues for many years. When asked what his perspective is as a Native person on water, wellness, and environmental issues, he says: "To me all things on this planet are earth, wind, fire and water. Different proportions, of course, but maintaining a relationship to all… In the Native perspective of nature, we are all part of nature… We are not just observers." Led by Scott Frazier, Carbon America is a carbon dioxide capture and sequestration 'super developer' deploying existing off-the-shelf carbon removal technology while also developing its own proprietary next-generation technology. Carbon America was created to transform the carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) industry by lowering costs and rapidly increasing deployment. Scott described Carbon America's approach to carbon capture sequestration saying, "Carbon America is an end-to-end vertically integrated carbon sequestration project development company. We think of the company's evolution in three stages. In the first stage, we are using existing off-the-shelf carbon capture technology to remove CO2 in projects that we consider to be low-hanging fruit, such as ethanol or ammonia production plants. In the second stage, we plan to deploy proprietary technology, currently being developed in-house, for addressing less concentrated flue gas point sources. In the third stage, we intend to deploy ambient carbon capture technology to remove CO2 from the atmosphere. In this way, we are meeting the urgency of the moment and demonstrating our project development and management expertise while we develop and contribute unique technologies and approaches to the carbon removal space." Scott further highlighted his unconventional cleantech background, "I was originally trained as an aerospace engineer. After my schooling, I was fortunate enough to work on some of the space shuttle programs and then eventually transitioned to working on a really audacious project with Andy Beal [a finance billionaire and philanthropist]. Some of the facilities and projects that I and the team I assembled under Beal are being used today by SpaceX and Elon Musk. I think I learned an incredibly valuable lesson in audaciousness: If you keep it simple and break problems into their component parts, there is no reason that very difficult problems cannot be solved. After about four years working for Beal, I spent eight years working on a solar technology project and then transitioned to working on an energy storage application with the cofounder of Carbon America, Alex Lau [a real estate developer and cleantech super angel]." At the onset of the pandemic, LA Metro made deep cuts to its bus service despite retaining the highest proportion of bus riders among large transit agencies in 2020. Over the past year, a coalition of transit advocates put pressure on LA Metro to reverse the cuts. The advocacy culminated in a commitment from the agency in January 2021 to restore service to pre-pandemic levels later this year. The win follows years of advocacy to make bus service a higher priority at LA Metro. Investing in Place is a Los Angeles advocacy organization that has been changing the conversation on bus investments. In this episode, Jessica Meaney and Scott Frazier of Investing in Place discuss the campaign that led to the January 2021 commitment. Jessica and Scott also reflect on the political nature of transit advocacy, and share their thoughts on what an equitable transit system looks like."I'm focused on taking all these wonderful ideas from the Better Bus Initiative, and putting them into a budget with real resources directed at our equity focused communities. We've had such a tremendous focus at the agency over the past several years on building giant projects. We need someone who really cares about the rider experience and the transit system as it exists today."For more on Investing in Place, click here. For more on TransitCenter, visit us here.Disclaimer: Political views raised by guests on the podcast do not reflect the views of TransitCenter.Hosted by Kapish SinglaEdited by Ali Lemer and Kapish SinglaProduced by TransitCenterMusic: “Comma” - Blue Dot Sessions

While the most riotous moments of the George Floyd Uprising have past, in parts of the country renewed attention to police tyranny continues to lead to clashes. LA Podcast co-host Scott Frazier joins us to talk about the struggle in Los Angeles, specifically against its massive Sheriff's Dept (LASD) now in the spotlight for horrific acts of violence following the discovery of Robert Fuller, a black man dead from hanging, in Palmdale California. After immediately ruling the death a suicide with no evidence, LASD killed Fuller's half brother Terron Boone. And last week they inexplicably killed 18 year old Andres Guardado, a security guard working out of their jurisdiction. Then they removed the cameras. We talk about the history of LASD and the broader context of riots and political struggle and racism in Los Angeles. We also tell some fun LA Stories! Hollywood Handbook’s best co-host, Hayes Davenport, happened to be in New York recently on a trip back from Italy and stopped by the kitchen. First of all, I’m SORRY about the scrappy audio quality. I explain what happened in the intro. ANYWAYS, this was a really fun and informative episode. Hayes and I talked about the origins of Hollywood Handbook and why certain guests have trouble on it, his new local politics show the LA Podcast with Scott Frazier, writing for Danny McBride and Jody Hill, the impossibility of ethical consumption under late capitalism, being a YIMBY vs a NIMBY vs a PHIMBY, whether or not dunking on libs by rose emoji Twitter accounts is an effective route to social revolution, problematic policing of the homeless population in Los Angeles, and being a realist about socioeconomic compromise. The outro music is “Ouroboros” by the Mars Volta.
