Originally conducted over six years with hundreds of children, this fascinating study presented youngsters with a tantalizing choice: enjoy one marshmallow immediately or wait fifteen minutes for a doubly sweet reward. The children who demonstrated the ability to delay gratification not only scored higher on cognitive tests, coped better with stress, and achieved higher SAT scores but also laid the groundwork for a successful future. Fast forward to 2018, a groundbreaking follow-up study with over 900 participants shed new light on the enduring impact of socio-economic factors, such as affluence and poverty, on a child's capacity for self-control. Intriguingly, despite assumptions that our digital age might erode our patience, subsequent replications of the experiment have shown an increase in the duration children are willing to delay gratification. Could it be that modern technology and the ability to think more abstractly are actually enhancing our executive functions, including self-control? Join Matt as he explores the significance of these findings and provides actionable strategies for improving our own ability to delay gratification. In today's episode, titled "The Goal Setting Toolkit," Matt delves into the profound world of goal setting, breaking down the science and strategies behind achieving success in any aspect of life. In this enlightening discussion, Matt explores the fundamental question: What is a goal? A goal is not just a distant aspiration; it's a conscious effort aligned with your values, the driving force behind your actions. Matt draws from the extensive research of Edwin Locke and Gary Latham, who conducted over 400 studies on goals, to unveil the science of effective goal setting. Locke and Latham's findings underscore the importance of specificity, difficulty, acceptance, feedback, and deadlines in setting and achieving goals. Specific goals propel you to higher performance levels, while challenging yet attainable objectives push you to grow. Acceptance of your goals is crucial, requiring a personal commitment akin to a private meeting with yourself. Feedback is the compass guiding your progress, and deadlines infuse urgency and effectiveness into your pursuit. However, Matt doesn't stop there. He explores the common pitfalls of goal setting and shares insights from the book "Self" by Kathleen Vohs and Brandon Schmeichel. With a touch of humor, he discusses the importance of self-regulation, urging listeners to recognize that change begins within, much like the lightbulb that has to want to change itself. Dr. Andrew Huberman's perspective adds a new layer to the conversation, emphasizing that dopamine, the neurotransmitter associated with pleasure, peaks not when a goal is achieved, but during its pursuit. Matt encourages listeners to find joy in the daily grind, understanding that progress and consistency yield greater rewards than the ultimate achievement. To help you dial in your goals, Matt offers practical tactics. Ask yourself if a goal is truly worth pursuing, write it down consistently, track your progress, and find an accountability partner. However, he cautions against falling into the dopamine trap and reminds us that the journey is never truly done. Always see the bigger picture and consider what comes next after achieving a goal. Tune in to Define Success to equip yourself with the Goal Setting Toolkit, unlocking the secrets to turning your aspirations into tangible achievements. Join host Matt Lupi on this insightful episode of the Define Success Podcast as we delve into the powerful concept that can reshape your life—The Hedgehog Concept. Discover the keys to unlocking your true purpose and achieving lasting success. The Hedgehog Concept is a business strategy framework introduced by Jim Collins in his book "Good to Great." Collins and his research team studied a set of companies that made the leap from being good companies to truly great ones. They found that these great companies shared common characteristics, and one of them was what Collins called the Hedgehog Concept. The Hedgehog Concept is based on the idea of a hedgehog, which, when threatened by predators, has one very effective response: it rolls itself into a tight, spiky ball. In the context of business strategy, the Hedgehog Concept represents the intersection of three circles: Passion: What you are deeply passionate about. Best at: What you can be the best in the world at. Economic Engine: What drives your economic or resource engine. The idea is to find the overlap of these three circles, focusing on activities or pursuits that align with all three aspects. According to Collins, great companies focus on doing a few things exceptionally well rather than trying to be everything to everyone. By concentrating on what they are truly passionate about, excel at, and drives their economic engine, companies can achieve long-term success and greatness. The Hedgehog Concept encourages organizations to identify their core strengths and stick to them, avoiding the temptation to spread resources and efforts thin across unrelated areas. It's a framework that promotes clarity and simplicity in strategic decision-making.   In this episode, Matt Lupi explores the wisdom of the Hedgehog Concept, a transformative business strategy introduced by Jim Collins. But it's not just for corporations; it's a roadmap for individuals seeking clarity in their life's journey. Welcome to another insightful episode of the Define Success Podcast with your host, Matt Lupi. In today's episode, we dive deep into the profound question that plagues us all at some point: "If not now, then when?"  Procrastination is a universal struggle that we've all encountered to varying degrees. How many times have you harbored a brilliant idea or set ambitious goals, only to let them languish, unfulfilled? If you claim you've never experienced this, it's time for some introspection because, let's face it, we're all guilty to some extent. But why do we procrastinate? There are usually two main culprits. First, there are moments when we're just too comfortable in our inertia, succumbing to laziness. No sugarcoating needed – it happens. Second, there are times when the goal at hand doesn't quite light the fire of passion within us. Taking action in such situations can feel as painful as pulling teeth. We often find ourselves caught in the web of our daily schedules. Even when life isn't overwhelmingly busy, it's easy to believe that there's no room for a new habit, morning routine, or side hustle. Consequently, we end up taking no action on the very things we claim to desire. The truth is, what we fail to prioritize, we inevitably fail to achieve. In such moments, it's essential to ask yourself that powerful question: "If not now, then when?" The answer to this question can lead to one of three outcomes: 1. Immediate Action: You recognize that it's your ego holding you back, and you understand the importance of getting to work. Matt Lupi shares his experience of preparing to cold plunge – his mind initially resists, but he conquers that resistance with action. 2. A Plan for Action: You come to terms with the fact that "someday" is not a day of the week. Matt Lupi, for instance, reveals how he resurrected his consistent saving and investment habits by setting specific goals, timelines, and commitments. No more vague promises to yourself. 3. No Pursuit at All: Sometimes, it's okay to embrace the fact that you can't juggle 20 different things simultaneously. If your plate is already full or you're presented with opportunities that don't align with your true passions, it's perfectly acceptable to say no. Matt Lupi candidly explores those moments when his ego tempted him to follow others' paths, only to realize that the pursuit was not aligned with his true desires. This episode will help you find peace in recognizing when to say no and focus on what truly matters. Join us as we navigate the complexities of procrastination, self-awareness, and the power of making the right choices at the right time. Don't miss this thought-provoking episode of the Define Success Podcast with Matt Lupi. Remember, success begins with understanding that question: "If not now, then when?"
