On March 24, 2025, Daniel Hernandez, better known as Tekashi 6ix9ine, marked a significant milestone in his tumultuous career: he is officially off house arrest. The controversial Brooklyn rapper celebrated by cutting off his ankle monitor, a moment captured in a video snippet shared across social media platforms like X, where fans and detractors alike buzzed with anticipation. This development follows a rollercoaster of legal battles that have defined much of his public life since his 2018 arrest on federal racketeering and firearms charges tied to the Nine Trey Gangsta Bloods. After testifying against gang members in 2019, earning a reduced two-year sentence and the infamous “snitch” label, 6ix9ine was released early in April 2020 due to COVID-19 concerns, serving the remainder under home confinement. His latest stint on house arrest stemmed from probation violations in 2024—failed drug tests and unauthorized travel—resulting in a 45-day jail term, followed by 30 days of house incarceration, 30 days of home detention, and 30 days of home curfew, all completed by early 2025.Now free from the ankle monitor's constraints, 6ix9ine wasted no time signaling his return to music. Posts on X, including one from @JayyjaeOnHots23, show him previewing a new track, its bass-heavy beat and signature aggressive delivery hinting at a continuation of the sound that propelled hits like “Gummo” and “Fefe” to chart-topping status. The snippet, paired with visuals of him severing the monitor, underscores his flair for provocation—a trait that's kept him relevant despite years of legal and personal chaos. His last major release, “Blackballed” in 2024, featured collaborations with Kodak Black and others, but this upcoming drop promises a fresh chapter, unburdened by physical restrictions.6ix9ine's career has been a paradox: a meteoric rise fueled by rainbow hair, viral antics, and raw energy, juxtaposed against a backdrop of violence, betrayal, and incarceration. His 2018 debut album, “Dummy Boy,” hit number two on the Billboard 200 despite dropping days after his arrest, while 2020's “TattleTales,” recorded post-release, leaned into his polarizing persona. Critics often pan his substance-light lyrics, but his commercial pull—evidenced by “Trollz” with Nicki Minaj hitting number one—remains undeniable. This latest freedom comes after a March 13, 2025, raid on his Florida home, where feds seized guns and drugs, though he avoided new charges. Posts on X from outlets like @FulLCircLAfrica hailed the end of his house arrest as a “major celebration,” reflecting a fanbase eager for his next move.Musically, 6ix9ine's return could reignite his trap-punk hybrid, a style that's influenced a wave of SoundCloud-era rappers. The snippet suggests he's doubling down on bombast—think pounding 808s and shouted hooks—potentially targeting the rage-rap audience he helped shape. Yet, his offstage life looms large: feuds with peers like Lil Durk, legal woes in the Dominican Republic for battery and domestic violence, and a persona that thrives on controversy. As he teased on Instagram in 2020, “Picture the noise I'm gonna make when I'm outside,” this moment feels like that prophecy fulfilled. Whether this new music, expected soon, reclaims his throne as the “King of New York” or merely stokes more chaos, 6ix9ine's knack for staying in the spotlight—ankle monitor or not—ensures all eyes are on him.
What is going on at The Original Pantry Cafe in downtown LA? Reports of a labor dispute threatening to close down the storied institution have been swirling all week. We try to make sense of the noise, and ask ourselves is there any hope for the house that Richard Riordan built? Secondly, Silver Lake lesbian bar The Ruby Fruit just added controversy to its menu. The bar has been fighting for survival since the wildfires took a massive hit to their bottom line. And while they've generally received an outpouring of support, an investigative piece from Eater suggests that not everybody is so enthused with how the bar has handled its business. Finally, what do raw milk, women's history month and Gordon Ramsey all have in common? Well, they all make an appearance in this week's epic round of Chef's Kiss, Big Miss. We finally made it to Jordan Kahn's Vespertine in Culver City, which reopened after a hiatus in the Spring of 2024, and earned not one but two Michelin Stars just a few months later. If you've heard people talk about VesperVespertineine, then you know that it elicits strong reactions. Some people can't get enough of Chef Kahn's otherworldly creations, with Michelin describing his food as “visually stunning” and “daringly inventive.” Others, however, walk away deeply confounded, scratching their heads like entire world in the wake of the Luka Doncic trade. I believe the Infatuation called it “unpleasant to consume.” But what did Father Sal and I think of the experience? We give flowers to the very deserving LA-based journalists and writers who did score James Beard nominations, including Gab Chabran, Daniel Hernandez and Noah Galuten. We also talk about what we learned from a New Yorker deep dive on the Wild West that is restaurant reservations, why Angelenos are flocking to two new bakeries that opened this week, and the four pizzas that stole the show at this weekend's Pizza City Fest. We're joined by Chef Jonathan Harris of Linden, a relatively new concept that opened in Hollywood last summer. Chef Jonathan is about as New York as it gets, and he had one hell of an upbringing eating all kinds of foods and working in his father's acclaimed Long Island restaurant, Cornbread and Caviar. He talks to us about his journey, and how his unique path influenced the frankly mind-bending menu you can find at Linden. We also talk about his time operating a 26-seat tasting menu concept out of his apartment, and broader topics like the role black chefs and foodways have played in shaping American cuisine writ large. Ian Asbury is the Co-founder of Good Clean Fun, an absolutely bitchin' natural wine shop and bar in downtown LA. Natural wine has been on the rise for a minute now, but a lot of folks are still skeptical. How is it made? Is it real wine? Is it even any good? These are all questions we get into with Ian, who's passion for the form is, frankly contagious. We also talk about his journey from dining at Olive Gardens in Beaverton, Oregon to becoming a widely respected food and wine entrepreneur in our City of Angels. Father Sal also joins us to break down Michelin's California Guide, which was released earlier this week. Once again, Los Angeles was low-key snubbed, losing two stars and gaining only one. Chris talks with Blackwell School Alliance Board member Daniel Hernandez and Fort Davis NHS Superintendent David Larson about the Blackwell School, Marfa's segregated school campus which closed in 1965. The school is an unusually well-preserved example of the sort of institution that could be found across the south, both before and after the Supreme Court's Brown v. Board of Education decision put an end to legal segregation in schools. The Blackwell School Alliance is a group of alumni and other community members who have acted to save the building from demolition and created a small museum to share the experiences of the students. Since Congress approved the addition of the Blackwell School as a National Historic Site, the National Park Service has begun the long process of working with the community to collect and tell its story.

Tekashi 6ix9ine, born Daniel Hernandez, experienced a meteoric rise and an equally spectacular fall in the music industry. Emerging in 2017, he quickly gained attention with his flamboyant appearance, vibrant rainbow-colored hair, and provocative lyrics. His controversial persona and affiliations with gangs attracted a substantial online following, propelling his debut single "Gummo" to viral success. However, his ascent was marred by legal troubles, including charges related to racketeering, firearms, and involvement in violent incidents. In a shocking turn of events, Tekashi cooperated with authorities, testifying against former associates, which led to his release from prison. Despite his freedom, his reputation was tarnished, as many viewed him as a snitch and discredited his credibility. The fallout from his legal battles, combined with public backlash, significantly impacted his music career. Tekashi's subsequent releases failed to replicate his earlier success, and he struggled to regain his footing in the industry. The rise and fall of Tekashi 6ix9ine serve as a cautionary tale, highlighting the volatile nature of fame and the consequences of one's choices in the pursuit of stardom. A search for new ways to talk about race in Aotearoa New Zealand brought together this powerful group of scholars, writers, and activists. For these authors, attempts to confront racism and racial violence often stall against a failure to see how power works through race, across our modern social worlds. The result is a country where racism is all too often left unnamed and unchecked, voices are erased, the colonial past ignored and silence passes for understanding. By 'bringing what is unspoken into focus', Towards a Grammar of Race in Aotearoa New Zealand (Bridget Williams Books, 2022) seeks to articulate and confront ideas of race in Aotearoa New Zealand – an exploration that includes racial capitalism, colonialism, white supremacy, and anti-Blackness. A recurring theme across the book is the inescapable entanglement of local and global manifestations of race. Each of the contributors brings their own experiences and insights to the complexities of life in a racialised society, and together their words make an important contribution to our shared and future lives on these shores. Contributors to this book: Pounamu Jade Aikman, Faisal Al-Asaad, Mahdis Azarmandi, Simon Barber, Garrick Cooper, Morgan Godfery, Kassie Hartendorp, Guled Mire, Tze Ming Mok, Adele Norris, Nathan Rew, Vera Seyra, Beth Teklezgi, Selome Teklezgi and Patrick Thomsen. Arcia Tecun (a.k.a. Daniel Hernandez) is a storyteller (film maker, podcaster) and Pouako (Lecturer) at Waipapa Taumata Rau (University of Auckland) in ethnomusicology and social-cultural anthropology. His research and teaching interests include Indigeneity, race, class, gender, religion, food, and popular culture/music in Oceania and the Americas. Lana Lopesi is an author, art critic, editor and multidisciplinary researcher based in Tāmaki Makaurau. In September, she became an Assistant Professor Pacific Islander Studies in the department of Indigenous, Race and Ethnic Studies at the University of Oregon. Anisha Sankar is a Chennai-born, Te Awakairangi-raised South Indian Tamil living in Pōneke. She is currently working on her PhD, which studies the contradictions of colonial capitalism. Key Point About the Book: • Arrives at a time of burgeoning questions around race, identity, and power • Provides readers with new ways of thinking and talking about race in Aotearoa New Zealand • Addresses New Zealand's local connections to global and international discussions of race Ed Amon has a Master of Indigenous Studies from the University of Auckland, New Zealand. Each day seems to present new questions about COVID, its variants, and the best vaccines. In this episode, we get clear answers from GHLF's own Dr. Daniel Hernandez about our risks to contract COVID and whether to wait for a new vaccine to come to market before getting boosted. “You should get a COVID vaccine even if you have already had COVID. There's no way to know how long immunity lasts after the infection,” says Dr. Hernandez, Director of Medical Affairs and Hispanic Outreach at Global Healthy Living Foundation. “There are very specific vaccines that are coming out. We have to make sure that we're up to date with those as well in order to protect ourselves in the best way possible.” Among the highlights in this episode: 1:10: Listener comment 1:41: GHLF Quick Poll results: 25% of respondents who are immunocompromised have received their fifth vaccination 2:53: UnitedHealthcare eliminates co-pays for insulin 3:51: Parents in Florida are struggling to find vaccines 5:12: Vaccines stimulate different branches of our immune system 6:10: If the vaccines are simple and work, what role do boosters play? 6:56: Why do vaccines sometimes cause side effects? 8:01: “You should get a COVID vaccine even if you have already had COVID,” advises Dr. Hernandez 8:49: Vaccines are believed to be effective for all variants 9:34: Speak to your doctor when deciding when to get further vaccines 10:47: What our hosts learned from this episode Contact Our Hosts Steven Newmark, Director of Policy at GHLF: snewmark@ghlf.org Zoe Rothblatt, Patient Advocate and Community Outreach Manager at GHLF: zrothblatt@ghlf.org We want to hear what you think. https://www.jesusdanielhernandez.com/ (Jesus Daniel Hernandez) may have the most Dickensian life story we have ever featured on the show. Jesus immigrated to the US at 14 from Mexico, found himself working a string of low-end jobs as a young father, enlisted in the Army, deployed to Iraq...and then magic happened. He was plucked from the military and thrust into the top tier of classical singers by Placido Domingo and Carlos Slim. It is an inspirational story that continues to unfold. A true pleasure to discuss everything from CBRNE school to the diva mentality of the singing elite. And at the end, we even talk about his upcoming appearance at our https://savagewonder.com/ (Savage Wonder Festival) - first time we've talked about the festival with a guest who is going to be appearing there! Who are you really? One of the toughest parts about growing up with other people's shame is that it makes the path to self-discovery extra rocky. When you come out of the closet, you're trying to tell the world who you are while also trying to figure that out for yourself. This week, LZ talks to two change-makers about what it means to put your whole self (body, spirit and mind) on the line and on display in the fight to equality. Kornbread "The Snack" Jete was the body-positive breakout star of the 14th season RuPaul's Drag Race. Arizona State Rep Daniel Hernandez Jr. saved a congresswoman's life and followed her into public service. Though they have chosen very different paths in life, they both talk about what it means to be plus size people of color in a community that holds up a white thin ideal. To know thyself is to love thyself.
