This week, we wrap up our month long April Fool's series with a "Drink 'Til It's Good" look at a movie with one wild-card cop who doesn't play by the rules and his no-nonsense African American partner...you'd think we'd be talking about Lethal Weapon but, you couldn't be more wrong for, in this episode, we're actually going to put our spin on Samurai Cop!
Awesomely Bad MonthSamurai Cop [1991]: Episode 343When the crime gets too serious what do you do? You call, the Samurai Cop. Bingo. He will get down to business and take out the villains with his katana as he does samurai things. Ok, just a few samurai-ish things.#SamuraiCop #AwesomelyBadMovie #MovieReview

127. "It was an experience!" Hiya beautiful people, welcome once again to a maim feature episode of the Betamax Dungeon. This week the two doofs offer a detailed analysis of; Samurai Cop from 1991. This movie was so bad it was enough to make Mark and Jamie completely forget that they ever had such a thing as a "swear jar", their roasting of this film is that vitriolic. Typically this podcast contains swearing (LOTS OF SWEARING SORRY) drunken opinions and swearing that could possibly irritate or offend. Hope you find something about it redeeming, if you do, please like, or share, or leave a comment. Thanks dungehead! #samuraicop
Mike and Christian watch in delight as Joe Marshall and Frank Washington, two tenacious police detectives, seek at all costs to stop the Katana, a renegade Yakuza gang composed of violent and sadistic killers who want to lead the drug trade in Los Angeles.
Though it's the Year of the Stitch-up, John Hammond has been building up a repertoire of picks for some time that would fit the bill! Previous picks include Samurai Cop, For Your Height Only, Hard Ticket to Hawaii, New York Ninja and Devil Fetus. So this week is totally on brand with the 1995 Japanese horror, Bloody Muscle Body Builder In Hell.Bloody Muscle Body Builder in Hell is a fascinating oddity in the realm of low-budget Japanese horror, with a production history almost as legendary as its over-the-top gore. Filmed in the mid-1990s by director Shinichi Fukazawa, who also starred as the film's musclebound protagonist, the movie was heavily inspired by Sam Raimi's Evil Dead. Fukazawa, an avid horror fan, took a DIY approach to filmmaking, handling multiple roles including directing, writing, editing, and even special effects. However, despite completing the initial shoot, the film languished in obscurity for years due to budgetary issues and technical limitations. It wasn't until nearly two decades later that Bloody Muscle Body Builder in Hell finally saw release, thanks to Fukazawa's painstaking efforts to edit and complete the film. The result is a gloriously campy, blood-drenched homage to splatter horror, packed with stop-motion effects, homemade prosthetics, and a relentless energy that belies its minuscule budget. Its long-delayed 2012 release—and later international cult status—proved that passion and dedication can sometimes trump production values, securing the film a place as Japan's answer to Evil Dead.If you enjoy the show we have a Patreon, so become a supporter.www.patreon.com/thevhsstrikesbackTrailer Guy Plot SummaryIn a world where the dead refuse to stay buried… one man must flex his way through a nightmare of blood, guts, and pure terror! After receiving a mysterious invitation, a bodybuilder and his ex-girlfriend venture into an abandoned house, unaware that an ancient, vengeful spirit lurks within its walls. Trapped inside, surrounded by grotesque horrors and relentless demonic forces, he'll have to use more than just his muscles to survive. Armed with raw strength, determination, and a whole lot of splattered gore, he must fight his way through the madness… or become just another victim in the house of hell! The fellas have a brief chat about what they've been up to lately before talking about a quintessentially cult movie called Samurai Cop. A film about a wig.
It's an international smorgasbord on this week's edition of the Movie Squad pod, as your intrepid hosts take you on a cinematic quest that stretches across the globe. First up, Tristan Fidler and Simon Miraudo tell guest Brekky host Damon Sutton about No Other Land, the Oscar-nominated documentary about the forced displacement of villagers in the West Bank, made by a cross-cultural filmmaking collective, which includes a Palestinian activist and an Israeli journalist. Then, Simon Miraudo reviews another Oscar-nominated flick: Walter Salles' I'm Still Here, which tells the true nightmare of Eunice Pavia (Oscar nominee Fernanda Torres), and her decades-long bureaucratic battle against a Brazilian dictatorship to learn the fate of ‘disappeared' husband. Both films are now showing in select Australian cinemas. Stay tuned for an extended pod-exclusive review of Grand Tour, a woozy travelogue that spans both continents and decades, and fuses echoes of Old Hollywood romance and screwball comedy with a video essay on colonialism, performance and contemporary Asia. It plays Perth Festival from March 3 – 9. Check out the rest of the remaining Perth Festival film season line-up here! Be sure to tune in to RTRFM every Friday at 7:30am to hear Movie Squad live on Breakfast with Pam! Hi everyone and welcome to a belated episode - I've recently had eye surgery and the recovery has been longer than expected! As usual, click the link to see the trailer for each of the main reviews! In this episode, we kick off with CHIEF OF STATION (Signature Entertainment) - the latest action thriller from director Jesse V. Johnson, starring Aaron Eckhart and Olga Kurylenko! THE PRANK (Signature Entertainment) is a dark comedy in which two highschoolers spread a rumour that their science teacher murdered a student - with hilarious results! There's certainly nothing hilarious about BIRTHDAY GIRL, where a mother tries to help her daughter after she is date-raped on a cruise ship. Things get even more somber with WHAT REMAINS (Icon Films), in which a self-confessed serial killer starts to question his own guilt. Our Short Shot is THE SPIDER, a genius take on the Spiderman origin tale! Click the link to see the whole short film! In our previous episode, we reviewed Samurai Cop as our DTV Throwback. This time, we review the sequel, SAMURAI COP 2! All I'll say is: this really defied all of our expectations!
Welcome back ragers to the best movie review podcast on the planet. The rage rolls on from the Film Rage Studio. After taking last week off due to unforeseen circumstances the boys are back to spread Rage to the masses. This week they review five movies as they try to make up for the week they missed. First up is Inside Out 2. Yeah, we know it's a kids movie but it looks like we are reviewing everything now. Then we watched the doc Red Fever which looks at how the western world has revered, romanticized and appropriated native culture. Then we watched The Bikeriders where Tom Hardy does what Tom Hardy does.. Then Russell Crowe is back with another exorcism flick which is cleverly titled The Exorcism. How did they come up with that amazing title? Then finally find out if a doc about Celine Dion was the torturous experience that the boys were expecting or did it catch them off guard? And then in the Rage or Dare segment, Bryce and Jim review the 1991 film Samurai Cop. With a title like that, how bad could it be? Listen and find out. Paul Scheer is a noted actor and comedian, and the author of the new memoir “Joyful Recollections of Trauma.” Off the screen, his true obsession is bad movies—even terrible movies. With his wife, the actor and comedian June Diane Raphael, and their friend Jason Mantzoukas, he presents the podcast “How Did This Get Made?,” picking apart all manner of bombs. David Remnick met Scheer at the Brooklyn Brewery and asked him for his top five of the very worst movies, and why they deserve recognition. Scheer discusses “The Room,” “Miami Connection,” “Samurai Cop,” “Jonathan Livingston Seagull,” and “The Apple.” “When I hear a director go ‘passion project,' I'm in,” he says. Plus, Francis Ford Coppola invested much of his personal fortune in a passion project, “Megalopolis.” It was mocked as a colossal failure before it even premièred. But the New Yorker film critic Justin Chang was at that première, and he thinks the chatter is wildly off base.
In this episode Mike, Rich and Steve check out three new releases: AMONG THE WILLOWS (Miracle Media) is a western in which two old guys must put aside their own feud in order to hunt down a gang of killers... SORRY, CHARLIE (Miracle Media) is another film in which an actor spends most of the running time on her own, talking to people on a phone. Can this film do enough to stand out from the rest? Check out our review! YOU CAN'T RUN FOREVER (Signature Entertainment) finds the always excellent J K Simmons as a psychotic killer hunting down a traumatised teen... Our Short Shot is LACKADAISY: INGENUE - this is the latest animated short about a gang of bootleggers in the Prohibition era. We covered a lengthier cartoon featuring these characters back in episode 229 and most certainly recommend you check them out! Our DTV Throwback is SAMURAI COP - a film which defies expectation. Its been lampooned before (There is a RiffTrax version out there) and friend of the show Rob Hill has recently made a 40 minute documentary on it. Please note that the version we've linked to, on Youtube, is edited for nudity - there are full versions available to rent. We urge you to watch the film, then check out Rob's documentary, HERE. After 25 years, detective Frank Washington teams up with his old partner, Joe Marshall, to investigate a bunch of gang-related deaths.Samurai Cop 2: Deadly Vengeance is the sequel to Samurai Cop, which was a movie that we absolutely loved. It was hilarious in all the best ways and very entertaining. Although Samurai Cop 2: Deadly Vengeance didn't provide the same level of engagement, it was still a fun film in how crazy it was. Los Angeles has been corrupted by a dangerous Yakuza gang called the Katana who have taken over the drug market. It's up to 2 police officers, Joe Marshall and Frank Washington, to put an end their drug trade.Samurai Cop was an absolute blast. It had us cracking up the whole duration of the movie and although a mess in so many ways, the absurd nature of the film made us love it. Grab your swords and your g-strings. Leave your sense of decorum and knowledge of normal human interaction behind. The Samurai Cop and his partner, Frank, are taking on the Katana Gang and they will not rest until that group of scum has been shut down. The only question is, can the Samurai Cop tear himself way from the women who can't help but throw themselves at him long enough to stop drugs being sold to kids and money being put into Swiss Bank accounts? This movie careened so fast into the "horrible movie" end of the spectrum that it actually warped the fabric of the spacetime continuum and somehow managed to end up being highly entertaining. We see 2023 off with a bang by watching and reviewing the infamous "so bad it's good" film, SAMURAI COP (1991). We ask, "Did this film actually have an editor?", question the gratuitous and, let's face it, gross, sex scenes and jointly roll our eyes at the film's racial jokes.I argue that Samurai Cop is a riot, to be watched with friends and Devan...well...she thinks differently. Later we answer listener questions and talk about whay films we'd watch for the first time again, if we had the chance. Enjoy!
Oh boy oh boy are you in for a treat! We have Alex Estrada (host of The Estate) to talk about the most whackadoodle movie we've seen yet: Samurai Cop!
