Ultracrosses and tropical perennials grown as annuals are just two of the many innovative breeding strategies being used by Chris Smith and the Utopian Seed Project to help make local food systems more resilient in the face of climate change. Based in western North Carolina, they are pioneering unusual breeding strategies that can be used by farmers and breeders anywhere to help develop varieties that can adapt to our changing climate. Underlying their work is the fact that many vegetable varieties are bred for specific regions, and need a high level of inputs for them to succeed. “The Utopian Seed Project is anticipating a less than utopian future as climate changes threaten crops and growing environments,” as Growing for Market Magazine writer Jane Tanner put it in her story about USP, which is linked below in the show notes. Learn how they are using these unusual breeding strategies, along with classical breeding and selection, and how you can access some of their varieties and use their strategies on your own farm in this fascinating episode. We're continuing our journey through the season of Lent with a conversation with four individuals who have helped to create The Soil and the Seed Project. This unique initiative was launched during Advent season in 2021, to create music, art, and “Little Liturgies” that follow the liturgical year to help us welcome the seed of the Good News together as it takes root in our lives. It is a gift to the church, given freely to any individual or community who wants it (not sold). ~ing Podcast producer Ben Wideman is joined by and Seth Crissman, Harrigan McMahon Bowman, Greg Yoder, and Melody Zimmerman. We'll hear more about who this project is for, how it came together, and what their hopes are for the future. Fall and early winter are the perfect time in much of the Northern Hemisphere to plant bulbs, woody shrubs and trees, herbaceous perennials, and perennial vines in the landscape. It is also a good time to seed many spring-blooming native(and non-native) annuals. So, I thought it was just the right time of year as well to chat a little with Heather McCargo of the Wild Seed Project in Portland, Maine. Focused on the relationship between seed grown native plants in cultivated landscapes and reweaving healthy ecosystems across our world, Heather founded The Wild Seed Project and served as its executive Director from 2014 – 2021. She is currently the seed program manager for the project. The Wild Seed Project envisions a landscape where people help re-populate the landscape to be abundant with native plants (primarily grown from seed) so that we can support wildlife, biodiversity, and buffer the effects of climate change. They invite gardeners around the country - the world in fact – to take their rewild pledge committing to working towards including a minimum of 70% seed-grown native plants in your garden. Cultivating Place now has a donate button! We thank you so much for listening over the years and we hope you'll support Cultivating Place. We can't thank you enough for making it possible for this young program to grow even more of these types of conversations. The show is available as a podcast on SoundCloud, iTunes, Google Podcast, and Stitcher. To read more and for many more photos please visit www.cultivatingplace.com.
In this episode, we explore Celton and Jayton's SEED Project regarding the traditional methods of boat construction and the modern methods through which they have updated the historic craft.
Juan José Gutiérrez, immigration lawyer and executive director of the Full Rights for Immigrants Coalition, talks to us about the 21-point immigration plan the Biden administration introduced this week, which included expedited removals for immigrants, where individuals and families can be expelled from this country without a hearing before an immigration judge, and how the administration is embracing draconian policies that were criticized during the Trump administration. We also talk about Texas Governor Greg Abbott activating the National Guard to police border areas and how this will lead wrongful detentions and racial profiling. Shawn Cantrell, Vice President of Field Conservation Programs at Defenders of Wildlife, talks to us about the state of wolf conservation in the U.S., and how wolf populations have fared after the Trump administration stripped federal protections from wolves at the end of his term, which has sparked hunts in various states of the nation with very little oversight and regulation, and how this has dealt a huge blow to species recovery. We also talk about other reintroduction programs that have been successful in other states like Colorado and California, how to coexist with wolves, and the importance that wolf populations have on the environment, from regulating deer and elk populations, to plant recovery and clean water. Jacquie Luqman, co-host of By Any Means Necessary on Radio Sputnik, joins us in a conversation about news that Washington, DC will once again require masks indoors regardless of vaccination status, police conducting “walkthroughs” in DC neighborhoods, and how policing is wrongly deployed to address community issues that have more to do with poverty and public health than with crime. We also talk about how the district remains a colony of the U.S., with the attendant issues of inequality, segregation, and lack of representation. Reana Kovalcik, founder of the Share a Seed Project, tells us about trends in mutual aid and self and community sufficiency through the Share a Seed Project, and how sharing food, knowledge, and promoting a slow food movement can help promote and sustain healthier and stronger communities.

Did you know that okra doesn’t have to be slimy? Join Food Sleuth Radio host and registered dietitian, Melinda Hemmelgarn, for her interview with Chris Smith, founder and Executive Director of the Utopian Seed Project and author of The Whole Okra: A Seed to Stem Celebration. The grand champion of okra, Smith describes his okra seed trial research, celebrates okra’s many uses, teaches us how to remove the “slime,” and explains why okra might play a key role in food security during climate change. Smith also emphasizes the need to preserve regional, diverse and heritage seeds. Related website: www.utopianseed.org

This Sunday, we conclude our Seed Project series with the Big Day of Giving. Come and hear stories of how God richly accomplished incredible miracles through those who were obediently willing to sacrifice for others. And the benefit it brought them.
In John 12:24, Jesus said: “I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat is planted in the soil and dies, it remains alone. But its death will produce many new kernels—a plentiful harvest of new lives.” The Seed Project is all about our desire to see ‘a plentiful harvest of new lives’...but in order for new life to happen, Jesus’ illustration of the seed reminds us that first a death must occur. Join us this week as Pastor Jeremy calls us to follow in the way of Jesus through laying down our lives (John 15:13) as an act of love for those around us.
Each and every one of us is shaped and impacted by the places that we come from. For some there is a great sense of national or cultural pride that they identify with. Where we come from begins to set for us a foundation that we stand upon as we enter into the world we live in. It shapes how we view and interact with the world. It has impacted us with a legacy that we are carrying forward. What about our roots as people who are choosing to follow Jesus? What is the foundation, what is the legacy we are carrying forward and where are our roots planted? Join us this Sunday as we take some time to explore our roots and the legacy we are carrying forward.

After nearly 6 years of praying, preparing, and planning, we are on the cusp of a new chapter in our building redevelopment effort – The Seed Project. While we are excited about some of the new possibilities that will open up for us in the future, this project has never been ultimately about a building – Jesus’ focus has always been on our hearts. Come and be reminded of some of the journey Jesus has led us on and how He continues to form our hearts after His.

On Friday, seven DACA recipients and one ally got arrested after two sit-ins at the offices of Sen. Chuck Schumer and Rep. Carlos Curbelo. As of Sunday night, the individuals are in a DC jail, refusing to disclose their names to law enforcement. They are also on a hunger strike. Why are they doing it? Wilson calls it "The Age of Loneliness."
As we continue our focus on The Seed Project, Pastor Matt will explore two very well known parts of the bible book, Galatians, and how the core question of the seed project is not so much about a building but about what it means to be connected to, and committed to a family.
