Mastering Crisis Communications with Tieja MacLaughlinIn this episode of The Thoughtful Entrepreneur, host Josh Elledge sits down with Tieja MacLaughlin, Founder and Communications Strategist at Tieja MacLaughlin Communications. Tieja is a seasoned crisis communications consultant who helps individuals and organizations protect their reputations, manage challenging media situations, and respond effectively when it matters most. In this conversation, Tieja shares practical strategies for navigating crises, building proactive communications plans, and maintaining emotional clarity under pressure. The Art of Reputation Defense: What Business Leaders Need to KnowTieja's path into crisis communications is a story of purpose and preparedness. Her mission is to help clients manage their reputations—especially when things go wrong. While many of her projects are reactive in nature, she's a strong advocate for proactive crisis planning. Just like an insurance policy, investing in public goodwill and preparing your crisis playbook in advance helps mitigate long-term reputational damage. In the episode, Tieja also opens up about a surprising personal passion: jiu-jitsu. More than just a sport, she explains how the discipline and strategic thinking required on the mat translate directly into her work. In jiu-jitsu, you anticipate your opponent's next move. In crisis communications, you must be equally strategic—assessing threats, staying composed, and responding with precision. This metaphor powerfully reinforces her approach to handling crisis under pressure.Throughout the conversation, Tieja offers actionable advice: prepare a crisis communications plan, conduct regular team training, and continuously update your strategies based on emerging risks. She shares real-world examples that illustrate how communication missteps can amplify a crisis—and how a well-prepared leader can instead use that moment to build trust. Tieja also emphasizes the emotional side of crises: when tensions run high, leaders must lean on structured strategies rather than reactive decision-making. Her work is not only strategic—it's deeply human.About Tieja MacLaughlinTieja MacLaughlin is a crisis communications expert, media strategist, and the founder of Tieja MacLaughlin Communications. In this insightful podcast episode, Jenny chats with Emer Garland, a social media and communications professional at MIT, about creating a cohesive, accessible media library to support the campus community. Emer shares her journey from Dublin to MIT and how she helped build a digital asset library on Flickr, empowering MIT's departments, labs, and centers to easily access and use campus imagery. Discover practical advice on managing digital media, collaborating with students, and capturing authentic campus moments that reinforce MIT's unique culture.Smart Strategies for Authentic Campus EngagementMake the Most of Existing Platforms: Consider where your audience already interacts and build your digital asset library on a platform they find familiar, as MIT did with Flickr.Collaborate with Students for Unique Perspectives: Engage student photographers to capture campus life from their viewpoint, adding authenticity to your content library.Use Analytics to Refine Content: Leverage Flickr's metrics to understand which images resonate most, helping you decide what to capture next and keep your library relevant. Why Build a Centralized Media Library? Emer Garland explains the motivation behind creating a digital media library at MIT. With media scattered across multiple locations—Dropbox, individual computers, and even physical photos—MIT needed a centralized platform accessible to the campus community. Emer and her team selected Flickr, a platform already familiar to many faculty and staff, making it easier for departments to adopt. MIT's library now hosts over 3,500 photos and videos, exclusively available to faculty, staff, and students, supporting a range of uses from social media to print materials.Emer shares that centralizing media has particularly benefited smaller departments, which may not have the budget for professional photography. With access to high-quality, general-purpose photos of campus life, labs, events, and seasonal shots, these departments can maintain consistent and professional communications without the cost. Today, MIT's media library is a valuable resource that brings a sense of visual cohesion to campus-wide communication efforts.‍Capturing Authentic Campus Moments Emer emphasizes the importance of authenticity in visual content, particularly in higher education. Rather than relying on staged or stock photos, MIT's library includes organic images that capture real interactions and moments on campus. Emer's team prioritizes genuine engagement shots—faculty collaborating with students, students immersed in lab work, and the unique quirks of MIT culture that differentiate it from other institutions. They also source images from student photographers, who bring fresh perspectives and often capture less-visible aspects of campus life.In addition to traditional images, MIT's library includes aerial and drone footage, capturing the campus from new vantage points. Emer notes that iconic locations like the MIT Dome remain popular, but the library continuously evolves to feature diverse, unique content that feels authentic to MIT's community and culture.Best Practices for Starting a Media Library For institutions looking to build a similar media library, Emer recommends starting with foundational images that showcase the campus, its culture, and its unique strengths. Seasonal campus photos, iconic architecture, and dynamic classroom or lab scenes are valuable assets that communicate both identity and community spirit. Emer advises researching the right platform based on where the community already interacts, as well as considering the time and budget required for maintenance.MIT's media team actively gathers feedback from their departments to understand content needs, providing regular photo updates and ensuring relevance. Emer also underscores the value of setting boundaries with professional photographers and establishing release protocols to respect privacy, especially for more staged or event-focused shoots.Guest Name: Emer Garland, Communications Strategist, MITGuest Social: LinkedInGuest Bio: Emer Garland is a Communication Strategist for MIT's Institute Office of Communications, where she guides departments, labs, and centers on their marketing and communication needs. Originally uploaded August 27, re-edited September 22nd. EDGE is an award-winning, full-service agency headquartered in downtown Lansing that produces dynamic public relations and marketing solutions for its portfolio of clients. Bodus joins the team to further the agency's legacy of outstanding outcomes as a lead communications strategist. A fresh face in the field of public relations, Bodus honed his written communications skills in the (occasionally) rough and tumble realm of local journalism, serving as an editor at daily newspapers in Michigan and California. His writing earned awards from press associations in both states. Most recently, Bodus served as the managing editor of The Argus-Press in Owosso for nearly two years. During the 2023 Michigan Press Association awards cycle, he was recognized for outstanding column and feature writing, as well as excellence in photography and page design. “I am really excited for the opportunity to contribute to EDGE's mission and culture,” said Bodus. “There's an undeniable energy here that I think is evident in the work the agency does. They're bottling lightning, and it will be fun to be part of the delivery system.” A 2015 graduate of the University of Michigan, with a Bachelor of Arts in sport management, Bodus is keeping a stiff upper lip about joining an office full of Spartans. Outside of work, Bodus is an avid tennis player and a dedicated film buff. Some of his favorite movies include “Election” (1999), starring Matthew Broderick and Reese Witherspoon and “His Girl Friday” (1941), with Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell. EDGE leadership has expressed enthusiasm with Bodus coming on board. “Adding Aaron to our team of content creators will deliver more excellent results for our clients,” said Lorri Rishar, EDGE CEO. Do your teens help around the house? Do they have weekly chores? Is it a chore to get your teens to do their chores? Does your teen promise to clean their room or do the laundry and they just keep putting it off till you feel like pulling your hair out? Have you given up on having your teens do chores because they have a rigorous academic schedule? Today I have a guest who will help us explore these questions. She calls herself an advocate for the value of unpaid labor. Bio: Lori Sugarman-Li believes deeply in the power of families and is a passionate voice in the cultural shift aiming to articulate the value and visibility of unpaid work. Her career as a Communications Strategist, combined with a decade devoted to full-time care of her family, community, and children's charities worldwide, served as the inspirational backdrop for her professional relaunch as a Coach, Speaker, and Author. She is dedicated to fostering meaningful conversations within families, encouraging them to contemplate how they care for one another and their shared space. Lori, her husband, and two sons are Canadian-born and live steps from Lake Michigan in Chicago. Here are some of the questions we explored. How should families approach the allocation of household roles to encourage participation from each member? In what ways can parents help their children connect with tasks that play to their strengths? What advice do you have for families to ensure everyone's preferences and abilities are respected and accommodated? How does assigning tasks aligned with a teen's interests influence their sense of responsibility? How do you suggest we teach teens to see the value in the unpaid work that goes into running a home? What language shifts do you propose for discussing domestic work that can help elevate its importance? Could you share some insights on how to illustrate the deeper significance of everyday chores to teens? "Because the ultimate goal, the real desire here is full task ownership by everybody. Because what we know is that not only does the mother perform 75% of the executional work, but typically the mother is holding all of the mental and emotional work as well." https://ourhomeourpride.com/ https://www.instagram.com/ourhomeourpride/ Learn more about your ad choices.
