Kapitel 21Ende gut, Alles gut.
The brilliant cricketer Frank Worrell became the first permanent Black captain of the West Indies team in 1960 – but he had to wait for a decade to get the job, denied by the elitism, insularity and racism of Caribbean cricket's rulers. BBC producer and cricket author Simon Lister travels to Barbados to find out how Worrell's upbringing, his cricketing adventures and his determination not to be cowed by the powers that ran island cricket, shaped a man who changed the West Indian game for ever. Simon Lister also considers Frank Worrell's legacy for today, speaking to Ebony Rainford-Brent, England's women's first Black cricketer who discovered that she had a unique connection to Frank Worrell that changed her life.
Bio: Sir Frank Cooper - Founder and President of the AAhAs, the African American Humor Awards Society Sir Frank Cooper, a visionary and trailblazer in the world of entertainment, is the distinguished founder and president of the African American Humor Awards Society (AAhAs). Born with an unwavering passion for comedy and a deep sense of justice, Cooper's journey from a chance encounter to becoming the driving force behind the AAhAs is nothing short of remarkable. Cooper's journey began when he crossed paths with the formidable Beverly Muse, a meeting that would change the course of his life forever. Muse, a true force to be reckoned with, extended an invitation to Cooper. This invitation led him to the first-ever Black comedy club in Los Angeles, where he was immediately immersed in an electric atmosphere that ignited his love for comedy. During this laughter-filled event, Cooper stumbled upon the legendary Michael Williams, the mastermind behind The Comedy Act Theater. Williams saw potential in Cooper and took a chance on him, leading to Cooper's involvement in the comedy club crew. This role not only immersed him in the behind-the-scenes aspects of the comedy world but also sparked his passion for scheduling acts and nurturing comedic talent. As Cooper's journey continued, he couldn't ignore the glaring absence of recognition for the incredible talent within minority communities in prestigious award shows like the Oscars, Emmy's, and SAG Awards. This realization ignited the spark that led to the birth of his visionary idea—the African American Humor Awards Society, or AAhAs. Cooper's innovative thinking and dedication to celebrating extraordinary talent prompted him to create an award show that would truly honor and showcase the diverse comedic voices often overlooked. Cooper's impact is far-reaching and transformative. He has become a beacon of change, working diligently to reshape the entertainment industry by infusing diversity, inclusivity, and representation into its very core. His tireless efforts are evident in the annual AAhAs award show, which has become a symbol of unity, celebration, and progress in the entertainment world. Under Cooper's leadership, the AAhAs are not just about awarding exceptional talent but about creating a cultural shift. Cooper's vision encompasses the power of laughter as a universal language that transcends boundaries, fostering a community that is not divided by differences but united by the joy of humor. The impact of his work is best exemplified by the way it touches individuals, as seen in the transformative experience of comedian Margaret Cho, who shattered barriers and brought people together through her performance at an AAhAs event. Cooper's leadership style is a testament to his dedication to empowerment, risk-taking, and inspiring others to achieve greatness. His wisdom, gained through his own experiences and challenges, is evident in the valuable lessons he shares with aspiring comedians and industry newcomers. With his eyes set on the future, Cooper's dream of establishing a museum to honor the history and cultural influence of comedians is a testament to his commitment to preserving legacies and promoting inclusivity. Sir Frank Cooper's journey from a chance encounter to the founding of the AAhAs showcases his unyielding dedication to comedy, diversity, and progress. His vision, leadership, and unwavering belief in the power of laughter to heal and unite are driving forces that continue to reshape the entertainment industry and leave a legacy for generations to come. In late April 2024, Wellington School of Business and Government was honoured to host Distinguished Professor Dame Anne Salmond to deliver the Sir Frank Holmes Memorial Lecture in Policy Studies. Examining how Te Tiriti o Waitangi and democracy can work together and drawing on global studies of cross-cultural relations in nation states, Dame Anne, Professor of Māori Studies and Anthropology, and a former Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Equal Opportunity) at the University of Auckland, drew on her own research, and that of her peers. She took the audience through a timeline that moved from the democracy that existed before the signing of Te Tiriti through the land wars, the right for all in New Zealand to vote, and to the current day questions around what a fair, wise, and just government might look like: one that has the best interests of all New Zealanders at heart and in mind, and ignores the trap of “Pernicious Polarisation.” Over 150 people sat with every word Dame Anne offered, many questions were answered, with many more arising as a result of the thought-provoking, empathic, and all-encompassing public lecture.

Hello and Welcome to TLG and to the second stage of our Full Flaps interview with Ian Whittle, son of Sir Frank, the man who invented the jet engine. Ian told us so much in part one, you'd hardly believe there'd be more – but there is – and we couldn't let an opportunity like this pass us by. So here once again is Ian talking to James Cartner and me Rob Curling at his Surrey home, almost 85 years to the day since the first running of Sir Frank Whittle's revolutionary invention.

‘I was in awe of Sir Frank', says Damon Hill, who won the 1996 Formula 1 World Championship with Williams. ‘There'll be so many people who were touched by his organisation, his determination to succeed and his love of motor racing'. Damon, TC and Natalie reflect on Sir Frank's incredible passion and spirit. With his passing at the age of 79 he leaves behind a remarkable legacy, and the team he drove forwards for 40 years races onwards this weekend in Saudi Arabia. CEO of the Saudi Grand Prix, Martin Whitaker, gives us a detailed look at the Jeddah Corniche circuit, and reveals its insane top speeds. Plus, we go inside the minds of Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton with a world-leading expert in driver psychology - Dr Riccardo Ceccarelli of Formula Medicine. He tells us how the two title rivals differ mentally, and which one is better suited to the immense pressure building at the end of this nail-biting season. Welcome to episode 37 of the Lovecars On The Grid Podcast! Paul Woodman and Tiff Needell once again bring us the latest motorsport updates from around the World! This week, we're crowning two FIA World Champions in both World Touring Cars and World Rally Cross. We look at a rally event in the UK, but we start with some sad news. Sir Frank Williams sadly passed away, a real tragedy and our thoughts are with the Williams family. Listen to Tiff's memories of Sir Frank! World Touring Cars took place in Russia this weekend, for the Race of Russia at the Sochi Olympic Park. Ex-British Touring Car driver, Rob Huff took the win, becoming the 12th different driver to win in the 16 races in his Cupra, but the Championship win went to Yann Ehrlacher in his Lynk and Co car. We also saw World Rally Cross this weekend, with it's season finale taking place at the Nurburgring in Germany. Swedish driver, Johan Kristoffersson took the Championship win, after his rival Timmy Hansen was disqualified from the final. This weekend also saw the Roger Albert Clark Rally take place in the UK, with drivers such as Top Gear star, Chris Harris! Snow and bad weather resulted in drivers getting stuck and entire stages being called off. Unfortunately, the weather also brought an early end to the event, too. Next weekend, we have the penultimate race in Formula 1 in Saudi Arabia. The Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen battle continues! Formula 2 will follow, with Oscar Piastri expected to take his Championship win, ahead of rival Guanyu Zhou, who already has a seat with Alfa Romeo in Formula 1 next year! We'll leave you with one question, what's your 1,2,3 prediction for the Formula 1 this weekend?
Graham and Luke return to talk all things F1. ...Well, mostly. Some Black Friday and Christmas talk from the weekend (0:40) before we talk the Spanish Grand Prix's extension (6:24) and Aston Martin's latest major recruit (9:37). Then, the sad news of Sir Frank Williams' passing; we talk about his team's accomplishments and some of our favourite Williams moments (13:35) Some of the tribute articles: https://the-race.com/formula-1/enormous-success-punctuated-by-tragedies-frank-williams-f1-story/ https://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/the-genesis-of-f1-great-sir-frank-williams/6829500/ https://www.racefans.net/2021/11/28/sir-frank-williams-1942-2021/ Sky Sports video: https://youtu.be/fruytqKdKKk We move on to talk F2 at Saudi Arabia (28:30), F1 at Jeddah and if it will actually go ahead - and the title permutations if it does - (45:57), McLaren's triple header struggles (45:57), whether Alpine are finally unlocking their potential at the end of the season (51:57), some Nicholas Latifi talk as he heads into his third year (53:16) before we make some unknown Saudi Arabai predictions (58:07). To finish, general end of podcast shenanigans as Luke poses a random F1 track to Graham, and ended up talking about the 1975 F1 season (61:00). How do you turn a humble delicatessen into the world's largest operator of shopping centres — Westfield Corporation? What sort of personality do you need to become a giant in the Australian and global real estate landscape? Sir Frank Lowy AC started his journey in war-torn Europe, with his father tragically dying at the hands of the Nazis. He fled to Australia and spotted an opportunity to sell good coffee in multicultural, immigrant-rich Western Sydney . From there he made his first commercial real estate investment, and the rest is history... In this interview Sir Frank candidly shares his story, including mistakes he made along the way, the key character traits he thinks are necessary to become a business success, and the importance of remaining paranoid yet optimistic.

This week's guest may not be a household name, but for 20 years he was at the epicentre of Formula 1. Between the late 70s to early 90s, Peter Collins worked for Lotus under Colin Chapman, then Williams under Sir Frank, then Benetton alongside Flavio Briatore, before returning to run Lotus. In various managerial roles during that period he worked with some great drivers too: Keke Rosberg, Nigel Mansell, Gerhard Berger, Mika Hakkinen and Johnny Herbert. And the great news for us is that Peter has great anecdotes about all of them! So settle in for fabulous insight into a golden era of the sport – including the time he dispatched Hakkinen to do the school run… This episode is sponsored by: SumUp

“Frank Lowe single-handedly cajoled a whole generation of writers, art directors and film directors into revolutionising British and world advertising.” – Sir Alan Parker.--------------- It seemed a bit over the top. I know he was very good and had a big impact on the business, but ‘single-handedly'? I guess Alan was his mate, so probably bigged him up a bit. Having just spent three hours nose to nose with Frank, I got a taste of what Alan was talking about. I can't think I've met anyone who's as sure of their own opinion. That may read like a back-handed compliment, it's not meant to be. Just that he totally believes in the power of advertising, he's so unwavering that it was striking. Especially today, when nobody seems be very sure of what advertising even is. It's easy to see (and hopefully hear) how generations of clients and agencies would've been persuaded, cajoled or battered into aiming higher. Higher to Frank meant “not just achieving sales success, but ensuring any advertiser entering people's lives uninvited, left them a little better or richer for their visit”. Enjoy being cajoled. ------- This pod first appeared on Dave Dye's series, https://davedye.com/2019/02/14/podcast-sir-frank-lowe/comment-page-1/ (Stuff from the Loft).

Lecture summary: The problem confronting the users of international law, whether academic or professional, is very often not whether a rule of customary law has come into existence (as has recently been handled with such success by the ILC), but rather, granted that a rule of customary law on a given subject does exist, how to establish what its specific content is, for the purpose of then applying it to a particular situation. This applies not only to reasoned judicial decision but should also inform the processes of legal advice and decision-making based upon it. Ultimately what this may amount to is the assessment and weighing of the opinions of others. Rule of law considerations dictate that this can’t be a matter of subjective preference but must be based on known principles, i.e. to determine which opinions carry authority. The talk will investigate some of the issues involved, in the light, particularly, of Article 38 of the ICJ Statute. Sir Franklin (Frank) Berman joined HM Diplomatic Service in 1965 and was the Legal Adviser to the Foreign & Commonwealth Office from 1991-99. For the past 17 years he has been in practice in Essex Court Chambers specializing in international arbitration and advisory work in international law. He is Visiting Professor of International Law at Oxford and the University of Cape Town, and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the British Institute of International & Comparative Law. His career in international law and diplomacy has spanned a wide and varied field, including settlement of disputes; the law of treaties; State responsibility; diplomatic and State immunity; maritime delimitation; the law of the Continental shelf; outer space and nuclear energy; the law of international organisations; the UN Security Council; the laws of war and neutrality; international criminal tribunals; and numerous other areas. He is a Member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration, a former Judge ad hoc of the International Court of Justice, and was the Legal Member of the Court of Arbitration between Pakistan and India under the Indus Waters Treaty. He has sat on numerous ICSID arbitral and annulment proceedings. He is the general editor of the Oxford International Law Library.

Stamford Chidge is joined by Jonathan Kydd, Tony Glover and Alex Churchill to bask in yet another spanking of the Arse. On the show tonight we celebrate one of the best goals I’ve seen at the Bridge, we marvel at the phenomenon that is N’Golo Kante and cry foul at Arsene Wenger, crying foul. In part two we salute Courtois – but can we keep him? We explore what is wrong with Arsenal and in particular their fans – should we thank them for the entertainment or refer them for psychiatric help? And we’ll ask is it all over bar the shouting and what are the trickiest matches we have coming up? In part three, we look back at the draw against Liverpool last Tuesday – applaud Luiz’s free-kick and ask was it 2 points dropped or one point gained. We’ll also give our very own tribute to Sir Frank of Lampard who announced his retirement last week. In part four we have some unbelievable emails from Alan Gavurin; Julian Spranger; Barrett DuPerron; Paul Marjoram and Annely Press. At least two of them might well make... "F1 isn't really a big business" "The fans have the power" "Sir Frank thanked me when we won in Malaysia" Relax! You haven't fallen asleep over Christmas and woken up in March! You've missed nothing, this is an F1InPubscast Interview special. Former Williams CEO Adam Parr took time out of his busy schedule to talk to the F1InPubscast, and since Kris the Boss did all the hard work it was only right he joined in on the interview too. Adam's main reason for talking to us was to let F1 fans like us know about the Graphic Novel he is releasing about his time in F1, but he also found the time to talk about his departure from Williams, butting heads with Bernie Ecclestone and tried his hardest to incite an F1InPubs fan revolution. You can find the book on his website, www.adamparr.net/ or you can follow him on Twitter @adam_s_parr to ask him about it. Next up: Autosport International show. The castaway on Desert Island Discs this week is the literary critic, Sir Frank Kermode. One of the most influential teachers of his age, he is credited with bringing the new literary theory of Structuralism to this country.
