Wellington is gearing up for an international rugby double header with the All Blacks and Black Ferns playing back to back games tomorrow at a sold out Sky Stadium. The All Blacks are seeking to beat France and improve a poor recent record in the capital while for the Black Ferns players it's their last game to impress before the squad for this year's World Cup is named. Rugby reporter Joe Porter reports.
The All Blacks take on France in the second test in Wellington tomorrow night - and the city is buzzing ahead of the game. The The 28th Cello Champions Charity Luncheon was held on Friday ahead of the event, with a stellar line up of former All Blacks including Frank Bunce and Josh Kronfeld. Frank Bunce played 69 All Black games - including 55 tests - between 1992 and 1997, while Josh Kronfeld played 56 All Blacks games - including 54 tests - between 1995 and 2000. The pair joined Nick Mills to share their memories of the infamous 1995 Rugby World Cup, as well as their predictions ahead of the All Blacks' second test against the French tomorrow night. Wellington mayoral candidate Ray Chung sent a sordid email to some council colleagues in 2023, claiming mayor Tory Whanau had drug-fuelled “tempestuous sex” in an orgy, and making reference to her having “pendulous soft breasts”. The email has only surfaced today - but does it rule Ray Chung out as a serious mayoral contender? Also, the All Blacks take on France in the second test at Sky Stadium tomorrow night. How important are these events for the city, and what can we expect from both teams? To answer those questions, former Wellington mayor Dame Kerry Prendergast and current Upper Hutt mayor Wayne Guppy joined Nick Mills on Friday Faceoff, live from the Champions Lunch at Takina. As the All Blacks took to the field at Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin last night to stagger over the line against the French, I thought about the calls I had on Marcus Lush Nights on Friday, talking about the future of our large stadiums - and in particular of Forsyth Barr Stadium and Wellington's Sky Stadium. It doesn't seem to matter which city you're in across the country, stadiums are problematic. Auckland continues its decade-old debate about whether we need a new multipurpose waterfront stadium and now, what to do with Western Springs. Christchurch rate payers are unhappy about the cost blowouts for their new stadium, Te Kaha - although when it opens I reckon they'll be won over and pretty happy. Wellington has a stadium that's not well designed for rectangle sports - rugby or football - suffers for the city's inclement weather and rarely looks full. Te Kaha has them all spooked. As fans took their seat at Forsyth Barr last night they may have wondered how likely, after Christchurch's shiny new stadium opens next year, they will be to see concerts from artists such as Pink and Ed Sheeran, or All Black tests, in their city again. And they are right to be worried. There is only so much sport to go around, and with more global acts skipping New Zealand, competition is only going to get tougher. We tend to think of large outdoors stadium as a must for a city of a certain size - a required piece of civic infrastructure like a library, theatre or art gallery - but perhaps we're more ambitious than we need to be. Does the South Island really need two covered stadiums? Perhaps not. But if you live in Christchurch you're thinking about Christchurch, not contemplating what it means for the stadium down the road. Forsyth Barr was conceived before the Christchurch Earthquake, opening in time for the 2011 Rugby World Cup. So Forsyth Barr always expected to compete with Christchurch, and obviously there was confidence it could. You could say Dunedin has had an unexpected advantage over the last 14 years. But now with competing stadiums, it's on the council and stadium management to step up and find a way to ensure the stadium remains an asset for the city and not a white elephant. The saying ‘built it and people will come' doesn't apply to stadiums. You need to convince people to choose your stadium and your city to perform in, and then convince the locals to attend. Everyone has a role in making stadiums work. Look at Eden Park. The recent change to allow up to 12 concerts a year to be held there has seen a surge in fondness for the place - even if it's mind-blowing how long it's taken to happen. The benefit are obvious on show weekends. Last night looked like a great night in Dunedin. The crowd in full voice, clearly enjoying the entertainment - both the stadium and the All Blacks got the job done. Gee, I hope it lasts. It's going to be really difficult, but hopefully Dunedin will find a way to make sure Forsyth Barr remains a source of pride. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The Hurricanes organisation, and players past and present, have come together in a fundraising effort to support Hurricanes wider training group member Nui Muriwai and his partner, Mereana Pearce. Mereana, 20, was recently diagnosed with SCCOHT (Small Cell Carcinoma of the Ovary, Hypercalcaemic Type), a rare and aggressive form of ovarian cancer that only affects one in 10 million women worldwide. Since her diagnosis, Mereana has undergone intensive rounds of chemotherapy, two major abdominal surgeries, high-dose radiation, and ongoing immunotherapy – all while being told she may have months to live. Given how few women are impacted by this type of cancer, the treatment Mereana requires is extremely limited, costing an average of $60,000 to $70,000 for every four doses. To help support Mereana, the Hurricanes welcome contributions to Mereana's Givealittle page, and are hosting a Trade Me auction, thanks to the kind donations of Sky Stadium, NZ Super Rugby clubs, Hurricanes players and Alumni in an effort to raise funds for her ongoing treatment and recovery. Among the items on offer in the auction include: A corporate box alongside two Hurricanes legends at the All Blacks v South Africa test at Sky Stadium in Wellington on 13 September A test match-worn jersey donated by Tyrel Lomax – worn in his 39th test for the All Blacks against Australia in Sydney, 2024 A signed test match-worn jersey donated by Brad Shields – worn in his fifth test for England against Australia at Twickenham in 2018 An All Blacks jersey signed by Dane Coles and embroidered with his career stats A round of golf with Jordie Barrett and Christian Cullen for two people in Wellington/Kapiti Coast Five fully-signed Marvel jerseys from each of the New Zealand-based DHL Super Rugby Pacific teams Lunch with three of the Hurricanes' All Blacks in Wellington, plus captain's run and hospitality access A 2025 Hurricanes heritage jersey signed by this year's squad “This is not an easy thing for us to ask,” Mereana said. “My family has always managed quietly, without seeking help. But more recently, with the news that I potentially have a couple months left to live, we humbly reach out. “If you are in a position to offer support, no matter the size, please know that we are deeply grateful. Your support means more than words can express.” “We were devastated to learn of Mereana's diagnosis,” Hurricanes chief executive Avan Lee added. “Nui has been great to have at the Hurricanes, and Nui and Mereana are a lovely young couple. It was amazing to see them both at our awards night recently. We just want to show our support for them, so hopefully the rugby community get behind this as well.” Anyone interested in providing to Mereana's Givealittle page can do so here. So, Auckland looks like it's doing it again: dilly dallying in decision making about big stuff. A council advisory group has informed us that neither the fancy waterfront stadium nor an upgrade of Eden Park is considered feasible. The full council still must vote on it on Thursday, so we'll see if anyone has some balls. Now by "not feasible" they mean not viable without public funding. We don't seem to have a charitable billionaire in our midst so the dough would have to come from the public purse. This is a question every major city wrestles with, but other cities seem to be braver. This week Brisbane has casually announced a new stadium to host the Olympics, calming putting nearly four billion dollars on the line. We're a growing nation. We need a venue for the events that come in 2025. Whether it's big sport or big concerts. We've seen how much fun Eden Park has been this week, three different sports in one week. It would be great to have a venue that's modern, complete, and full of character. I love stadiums. I'm super excited about Canterbury's Te Kaha. Forsyth Barr is great, and Sky Stadium just needs new seats and maybe a roof. But what do I want for Auckland? Now first I have to admit that Eden Park has given me tickets to events, but I would be happy for the waterfront stadium to go ahead. We'd never regret it I'm also happy for an Eden Park upgrade, after all Sydney ripped down the perfectly functional Sydney football stadium and completely replaced it. But it really is time for someone to put their neck on the block and just do it. Every city needs a Cathedral, and every city needs an iconic stadium. This was a good performance from the All Blacks to wrap the Rugby Championship. A performance that reassured us this All Blacks team has the raw materials to consistently challenge the top sides in the world. There are some tough test matches to come in November - England, Ireland and France in consecutive weeks - and we'll learn more about them when those matches roll around. But for now, it feels like things are trending in the right direction, There was more than enough there last night, on both sides of the ball, to feel better about the progress of this side than perhaps we have at other times during 2024. Wallace Sititi - exceptional last night from a bloke playing out of position in just his third test start. There was plenty of debate when he was chosen ahead of Hoskins Sotutu at the start of the All Blacks season, and I think we can safely say they got that one right. Will Jordan at fullback - he played there often for Razor's all-conquering Crusaders. Last night was his third straight start there for the All Blacks. The extra space he's got back there, the way he assesses the game in front of him, the way he runs and his elusiveness in broken play, which led to another try last night - there's no doubt he'll become our all-time leading test try-scorer. He's got 35 in 37 tests now, the record is Doug Howlett's 49. But his defensive work under the high ball was good too - the 15 jersey is his to lose now. I'm loving seeing Caleb Clarke get back to the form he showed when he first became an All Black in 2020. He's drifted in and out a bit in the time since, he had that brief dalliance with sevens of course - and he played just 5 test matches last year and only 2 starts, he played just 2 of the 7 games at the Rugby World Cup, and they were against Namibia and Uruguay. But in 2024, he's become the first-choice left wing. 2 more tries last night and a good all-round showing despite that slightly mysterious late yellow card. And to Tupou Vaa'i - who's played every game this year -7 of the 9 from the start. When Sam Whitelock and Brodie Retallick left, lock was a position where there didn't appear to be as much depth as we would have liked. Tupou Vaa'i has stepped up well and truly - and there's a very real contest between he and Patrick Tuipulotu to partner Scott Barrett in the second row. And just a word on the crowd - Wellington has been rightly criticised in recent times for not turning up for test matches. Well last night, they turned up to a sold-out Sky Stadium. And right across the weekend, there was a different kind of buzz around the city. It's what test rugby used to feel like here in the Capital, it's what it should feel like. May there be many more nights like that. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The curse in the Capital has been lifted, with the All Blacks going on to triumph 33-13 against the Wallabies at Sky Stadium. The All Blacks start a test match on Saturday under coach Scott Robertson with someone other than Damian McKenzie at first-five for the first time. Beauden Barrett will instead run the cutter against the Wallabies at Sky Stadium, his first start at No. 10 since 2022, with a former All Black playmaker saying that should remain the case as he doesn't see McKenzie as being at the level of an international first-five. Carlos Spencer made 35 test appearances in black and only five players have scored more points for the All Blacks than him. A player of similar style to McKenzie with a prized ability to unlock defences through innovative plays, he tells Newstalk ZB's Jason Pine he sees the 29-year-old as better suited to fullback. “I almost feel a little bit sorry for him to be honest. It's been a tough little road for him, obviously on the back of a team that probably hasn't performed to its potential and unfortunately it's usually the No. 10 that takes most of the stick. “I've always considered Damian as a better fullback than a No.10.”Spencer says McKenzie's Super Rugby form in the position is evident but does not see him as a test-level first-five. “Personally, no. I don't think he is. I think he's great at Super level but when it comes to test matches I just don't think he's got what it takes to be a really assertive No. 10 unfortunately. “I like Damian McKenzie, I think he's a great player but I just find that he's better suited at fullback than 10.”More time and space on the ball that is found when playing with 15 on his back, rather than 10, is what Spencer says makes McKenzie more suited to fullback. “He's got more time to make decisions, there's a bit more space, he enters the line well. I think he can see more from at the back. “That doesn't stop him from jumping into first receiver occasionally from fullback, but I think those are the biggest points. I think he just lacks that direction at test match level where it's really important.” LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
