Town Hall Seattle Civics Series

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 8, 2024 70:01

In 2018, there was a mass shooting with an AR-15 at a Waffle House. The racially charged act of violence led Dr. Jonathan M. Metzl, a Nashville-based gun policy scholar and author, to advocate for gun reform. But how can we stop gun violence in a nation that sees hundreds of mass shootings every year? As Metzl examined the crime, he began having doubts about continuing to approach gun reform through the lens of public health that he had championed long before. The killings led him to examine the limitations of biomedical frameworks for fully diagnosing or treating the complexities of American gun politics. In his new book What We've Become: Living and Dying in a Country of Arms, Metzl discusses the long history of distrust of public health as well as larger forces—social, ideological, historical, racial, and political—that he argues allow mass shootings to occur on a near daily basis in America and become normalized. What We've Become looks closely at the consequences of mass shootings in this country, the meanings of safety and community, and how obstacles like political gridlock impede progress toward ending these violent crimes. Metzl considers mass shootings to be a symptom of our most unresolved national conflicts and offers his views on what can make things right. Jonathan Metzl is the Frederick B. Rentschler II professor of sociology and psychiatry and the director of the Department of Medicine, Health, and Society at Vanderbilt University. The award-winning author of Dying of Whiteness: How the Politics of Racial Resentment Is Killing America's Heartland and other books, he hails from Kansas City, Missouri, and lives in Nashville, Tennessee. Florangela Davila has been a journalist in Seattle since 1992. For 14 years she worked at The Seattle Times, covering race and immigration. She was the managing editor and Crosscut Now host at Cascade PBS. Most recently, she led the KNKX newsroom for four years. The child of immigrants from Colombia and Peru, she was born and raised in Los Angeles and graduated from UC Berkeley and Columbia University. She's earned numerous individual and team journalism honors in print, online and broadcast, including a national Edward R. Murrow award for The Walk Home podcast.

Put steak in zip top with marinade – let rest for at least rest for four hours – a couple of days works too 2. Grill 7-8 min a side, cut diagonally into thin slices and serve.Smash BurgersPressed onto a sizzling hot griddle or skillet. Servings: 4 burgersPrep Time: 15 MinutesCook Time: 5 MinutesTotal Time: 20 Minutes, plus at least 15 minutes to chill the pattiesINGREDIENTS1¼ pounds ground chuck (80% lean ground beef)½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper½ teaspoon garlic powder½ teaspoon onion powder½ teaspoon ground mustard1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce½ tablespoon vegetable oil, for cookingHeaping ¾ teaspoon kosher salt4 slices Cheddar cheese4 hamburger buns (lightly toasted, if desired)INSTRUCTIONSIn a large bowl, combine the beef, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, ground mustard, and Worcestershire sauce. (Do not put the salt in the mixture; you'll add it later.) Using your hands, mix until evenly combined. Form the meat into 4 large meatballs (about 4½ oz each), then pat each ball into a 1-inch-thick disc; smooth out the edges as best you can. Refrigerate for at least 15 minutes or until ready to cook (up to 24 hours, covered).Turn on your exhaust fan and heat a 12-inch cast-iron or nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Remove the patties from the fridge and season all over with the salt. Coat the hot pan evenly with the oil. Place the burgers on the skillet one at a time, firmly smashing them flat with a metal spatula until about ¼-inch thick before adding and smashing the next one. Let cook for about 2 minutes until nicely browned and crusty on the bottom. Flip the burgers and top with the cheese; cook for about 2 minutes more for medium-rare to medium burgers, or 3 minutes for medium to medium-well burgers. Place the burgers on the buns and serve with toppings of choice.

In the small town of Lexington, SC, secrets, lies and racism came together to take away a young Black man's freedom and ultimately, his life. Willie Leaphart, 17, was walking home from church one night on Jan. 26, 1890, when he was arrested and accused of attacking a white woman at one of Lexington's finest homes. Despite being a teenager, Willie must have known that a Black man facing a charge like that in the Jim Crow South faced almost certain death. The attorney George Graham, reluctantly appointed by the court to defend Willie, uncovered facts that undercut the accusations of Willie's guilt and suggested a darker reason for why he was accused of the crime in the first place and why he couldn't be allowed to make it out of Lexington's jail, where he was lynched by a mob of 100 men. For 130 years, the crime was forgotten. But when the evidence is rediscovered in 2021 in the course of River Bluff High School research project about lynching in the county, it creates a chance for Willie's name to finally be cleared. But can South Carolina in the 21st century correct a 19th century injustice? Will the reason for his death finally come to the forefront?
