Today's guest is Robert Cheatham https://www.linkedin.com/in/rcheetham/ and we are talking about Japan Earth Observer, https://www.japanearthobserver.com/. This is a newsletter on the space, Earth observation, and geospatial industry in Japan. It is based on a fantastic effort by Robert to systematically collate every last company in the space and earth observation supply chain in that country. Naturally I was drawn to it due to my efforts to do this not only for Japan but every country in the world as the GEO500. We got in touch and exchanged our lists which led to the discussion recorded here today. The GEO500 has 56 Japanese companies since inception. 7 of them are delisted. So the index contains 49 live positions for this country. All GEO500 positions start with $100. The entire Japanese part of the GEO500 stands at $AUD13,000. This is because the 56 have compounded at 8% annually since inception. In the case of this country, starting as a position in Fujitsu in 2000. The top three performers in terms of capital growth rate are Terra Drone (125% annually), Synspective (71%) and QPS (59%). The top 3 in terms of value are Sony ($1100 - bear in mind the $100 starting position, equating to a 20% annual growth rate since entering the index in 2013), NEC ($960, 10%) and Raito Kogyo ($760, 11%). Note that the 3 fastest growers are all earth observation companies, and 2 of those are synthetic aperture radar satellite constellations. This is an exciting part of our industry to watch and I have recorded a couple of great episodes on the power of it. For example, - Jamon Van Den Hoek's work as an academic partnering with some of the world's largest media organisations to monitor building destruction in warzones and after fires: https://open.spotify.com/episode/0RQNjzDtTQTNqv8IiMy2SU- Umbra, a pioneering American SAR satellite manufacturer, they also operate their own constellation: https://open.spotify.com/episode/2QM3OeglXI1naiSgrKod17- Iceye, the equivalent from Finland: https://open.spotify.com/episode/04S3fsdL4cus2tOEbq4KBN- Ursa Space Systems, a commodity intelligence firm that uses SAR to monitor everything from iron ore stockpiles at ports to oil farm tank lids around the world: https://open.spotify.com/episode/3ltO0Bv8Mtq7dgnLhXWGxO- SeerAI, another analytical platform where I coaxed the guest to use SAR as a way to detect surface change on the NEOM excavation, the world's largest (now abandoned) building site: https://www.geospatial.fm/p/seerai-responds-to-johnny-harrisBut this wasn't just about current companies. We were privileged in this episode to be given a history of Japan's trading houses since the 1860s to today. This led to several insights around the longevity, for example, of the social groups that comprise such firms and how they can persist even through a trust busting effort by the winning country after a world war. Another insight was the benefit to society of trust busting and how it unleashed a wave of new companies and from that household names such as Honda and Sony. Honda recently launched a rocket that was able to land itself. This has relevance to possible future earth observation constellation launches. Sony released LiDAR solution in 2013 and also sells other geospatial products like a GNSS chip. We have come full circle.A final note about Robert himself. We are presented here with a cultivated and successful entrepreneur. He grew a geospatial software development firm to 50 people then sold it. He has learnt a foreign language well enough to spontaneously translate things for me during a podcast recording without warning. He also is able to offer a comprehensive historical view on the emergence, development, setbacks and modern day expression of several dominant companies in a vibrant foreign economy, Japan. He shows us the way, then, on multiple fronts. I am grateful for the chance to put an inspiring industry figure in front of you today. Thanks Robert.

Fuente: Radio Sefarad

Episode Summary: In this episode of the Solar Maverick Podcast, Benoy Thanjan sits down with Marek Kubik, energy storage expert and former Fluence founder, to break down the rapid evolution of battery storage and its critical role in the energy transition. Marek shares insights from nearly two decades in the industry, explaining how declining costs, technological advancements, and new use cases are pushing energy storage to the center of the modern grid. From lithium-ion dominance to emerging technologies like sodium-ion, and from grid stability to long-duration storage, this conversation covers the trends shaping the future of energy.   Biographies Benoy Thanjan Benoy Thanjan is the Founder and CEO of Reneu Energy, solar developer and consulting firm, and a strategic advisor to multiple cleantech startups. Over his career, Benoy has developed over 100 MWs of solar projects across the U.S., helped launch the first residential solar tax equity funds at Tesla, and brokered $45 million in Renewable Energy Credits (“REC”) transactions. Prior to founding Reneu Energy, Benoy was the Environmental Commodities Trader in Tesla's Project Finance Group, where he managed one of the largest environmental commodities portfolios. He originated REC trades and co-developed a monetization and hedging strategy with senior leadership to enter the East Coast market. As Vice President at Vanguard Energy Partners, Benoy crafted project finance solutions for commercial-scale solar portfolios. His role at Ridgewood Renewable Power, a private equity fund with 125 MWs of U.S. renewable assets, involved evaluating investment opportunities and maximizing returns. He also played a key role in the sale of the firm's renewable portfolio. Earlier in his career, Benoy worked in Energy Structured Finance at Deloitte & Touche and Financial Advisory Services at Ernst & Young, following an internship on the trading floor at D.E. Shaw & Co., a multi billion dollar hedge fund. Benoy holds an MBA in Finance from Rutgers University and a BS in Finance and Economics from NYU Stern, where he was an Alumni Scholar.   Marek Kubik Marek builds and scales deeptech businesses that accelerate the clean energy transition. Over the past 17+ years he has helped take grid‑scale energy storage from first‑of‑a‑kind projects to multi‑billion‑dollar platforms, and enabled giga‑scale renewable systems. As part of the founding team at Fluence, now one of the world's largest energy storage technology providers, he helped to establish the business and drive scale-up - through to unicorn, a $4.7bn IPO and beyond. As Managing Director, he led the Western Europe & Middle East sales organisation, cultivating strategic partnerships, building high-performing teams and transacting over $1bn in energy storage solutions. Today, Marek serves as a flexibility leadership team member at ENOWA, the clean energy and water company of NEOM, where he leads all efforts related to energy storage - a cornerstone of NEOM's ambition to achieve the world's first at-scale 100% renewable power grid. Earlier in my career, he helped develop Europe's first commercial utility‑scale battery project, building directly on my doctoral research and giving me a front‑row seat to the rise of modern battery storage. That mix of technical grounding and commercial execution still shapes how Marek works with teams, investors and policymakers today. He is also a recognised voice in the sector: a Forbes 30 Under 30 honouree that's delivered ~500 speaking engagements (TEDx, UN, COP, One Young World, Oxford University), grown a 50,000+ (top 0.002%) following on LinkedIn and authored the seminal Volta Foundation Battery Report (100,000+ downloads). Marek uses my platform to demystify energy storage, highlight emerging technologies and explore how AI and data can reshape clean energy systems. Alongside his corporate roles, Marek advises governments, infrastructure investors and technology startups on strategy, commercialisation and scale‑up execution - helping bridge the gap between promising innovation and bankable, real‑world projects.   Stay Connected: Benoy Thanjan Email: info@reneuenergy.com  LinkedIn: Benoy Thanjan Website: https://www.reneuenergy.com Website: https://www.solarmaverickpodcast.com/   Marek Kubik Linkedin:  https://www.linkedin.com/in/mlkubik/ Solar Maverick Podcast Updates In this episode, Benoy Thanjan shares key updates with the Solar Maverick community, including upcoming events, speaking engagements, and ways to stay connected. Photo by NEOM on Unsplash Published 23 March 2026 e548 with Michael and Michael – Stories and discussion on uncomfortable valley & uncanny valley, Nintendo's Talking Flower, 8bit Pixel Agents for AI orchestration and a whole lot more. Michael and Michael get things rolling while Andy is away on an article discussing the animated emojis in Microsoft Teams.  Fast Company article author Rebecca Heilweil describes these emojis as the ‘uncomfortable valley' due to the animations that imbue the emojis shared in Teams with potentially unintended additional meaning.  Check out the link for a comparison graphic showing the similarities and differences between the uncanny and uncomfortable valleys. Switching to robotic animation, Michael and Michael take a look at Nintendo's Talking Flower, which reminds them of the Alarmo alarm clock.  Next, a digital camera that provides mini quests that are satisfied by taking a picture of “a tiny thing” or “a hidden face”. Turning to AI, the co-hosts check out Pixel Agents, an 8bit representation of agents allowing the human orchestrator to monitor all the agents performing their tasks in a concurrent manner.  Michael R highlights a Mac local orchestrator called Osaurus.  Rounding out this week's episode is a Washington Post about jobs that AI may take on, a story about ChatGPT assisting with cancer research, and an intriguing video about Devo. If explaining the state of the world makes you feel like a conspiracy theorist, you aren't alone. In this monologue, Rushkoff argues that our built environment has become so convoluted that accepting its premises essentially means gaslighting oneself. Rushkoff recounts a recent experience as a guest on the companion podcast for the Hulu series Paradise, a show about a billionaire-funded private city. When Rushkoff tried to explain that this isn't just sci-fi, pointing to real-world projects like "California Forever" in Solano County and "Neom" in Saudi Arabia, the interviewer looked at him with concern and incredulity. Why does simply describing how the world works make us sound "crazy" to the uninitiated? Rushkoff breaks down why we are not the crazy ones; we are just the ones noticing the absurdity of a system designed to privatize the planet.Team Human is proudly sponsored by Everyone's Earth.Learn more about Everyone's Earth: https://everyonesearth.com/Change Diapers: https://changediapers.com/Cobi Dryer Sheets: https://cobidryersheets.com/Use the code “rush10” to receive 10% off of Cobi Dryer sheets: https://cobidryersheets.com/Support Team Human on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/teamhumanFollow Team Human with Douglas Rushkoff:Instagram: https:/www.instagram.com/douglasrushkoffYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJdUEh2Wh4fnswTLmqoEnhgTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@douglasrushkoffBluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/rushkoff.com Hosted on Acast. Imagine a building as tall as the Empire State Building, that stretches for more than 100km through the Saudi Arabian desert. Inside are nine million people – with robot maids and a giant fake moon – living in self-sufficient pods where everything they need is a five-minute walk away. It's part of NEOM, a futuristic megacity complex, which the Saudi government has already started building. And if you believe the PR, it'll be a car-free, carbon-free, utopian existence – the most equitable and sustainable society in human history. But will it happen? And what is the financial (and human) cost? For our first ShortHand back in 2026, we're looking at the most ambitious and controversial building project ever: The Line.--Patreon - Ad-free & Bonus EpisodesYouTube - Full-length Video EpisodesTikTok / InstagramSources and more available on redhandedpodcast.com

The Geospatial FM podcast topic profile: 1. Data engineering for geospatial2. GEOSPATIAL FOR WORLD MODELS (foundation models are so last week)3. GEOSPATIAL IN PREDICTION MARKETS (spatial finance is so 2022)4. In this context, stocks, globally5. Human rights outcomes of these stocksItem 5 is always number 1. So we are finishing the year with that focus. Let's look at this BBC article about a murder of a tribal landowner to make way for the world's largest dictator vanity project, The Line in Saudi Arabia: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-52375343. Abdul Rahim Al-Huwaiti spoke in this video before he was murdered: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f8Mp_CKbjdE. One thing he predicted was being framed by the government surrounding his dead body with weapons. They did report finding his body in such a state: https://spcommreports.ohchr.org/TMResultsBase/DownLoadFile?gId=35599. Another BBC article profiles Col Rabih Alenezi https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-68945445. He said he was a security force leader who was asked by the government to, if necessary, kill villages who resisted eviction. He refused and escaped to the UK. Whoever replaced him obviously was not so upstanding, and Abdul Rahim al-Hwaiti was killed. So we have a suitably arresting human rights issue to examine for the podcast. I then used The UN's Communication Report and Search tool (https://spcommreports.ohchr.org/Tmsearch/TMDocuments) to find out about the western companies involved, an issue flagged by the BBC. I found a UN Letter of Urgent Appeal to AECOM: https://spcommreports.ohchr.org/TMResultsBase/DownLoadPublicCommunicationFile?gId=28030. The communication search tool shows the CEO, Mr Rudd, does not appear to have responded to the letter. It is significant that AECOM was a recipient, because they're the best international design firm according to Engineering News Record (https://www.enr.com/toplists/2025-top-500-design-firms-preview). Last year it was Jacbos, also a delivery partner on The Line, but they have not received a letter of urgent appeal. In the letter, reference is made to an earlier one about the killing of Abdul Rahim Al-Huwaiti (https://spcommreports.ohchr.org/TMResultsBase/DownLoadPublicCommunicationFile?gId=25483). The UN accompanied that letter a week later with a summary for the public: https://news.un.org/en/story/2023/05/1136322. In tying up loose ends, I observed that another recipient of such a letter was Solar Water. They announced in 2019 what they were doing for NEOM: https://www.solarwaterplc.com/company-news/green-technology-in-the-neom-project-and-others-how-will-it-change-the-rules-of-the-game-in-the-gulf/. Five years later, however, after receiving the letter (https://spcommreports.ohchr.org/TMResultsBase/DownLoadPublicCommunicationFile?gId=28049), they gave up $100 million by cancelling the project: https://www.businessinsider.com/malcolm-aw-canceled-100m-neom-contract-human-rights-abuse-saudi-2024-5. AECOM has done no such thing. They could not even bear to respond to the letter. Despite being a signatory to the UN Global Compact (https://unglobalcompact.org/what-is-gc/participants/17780-AECOM-Technology-Corporation).AECOM is in the Consultancy vertical of the World Model 500. The podcast remains faithful to its 5 topics. Topic 5, human rights, is always number 1. Please accept, dear Mr. Rudd, the assurances of my highest consideration.

Jeremy Au and Kristie Neo break down how China, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia are forming new economic corridors that reshape trade, capital movement, and technology strategy. They describe how China and the Gulf now work together at a scale that surpasses Gulf–West flows, how the UAE and Saudi Arabia use bold planning to diversify their economies, and why Western reporting still misses the magnitude of this shift. They examine how Chinese overcapacity fuels Middle Eastern mega projects, how sovereign funds on both sides deepen cross investment, and how AI, data centers, and energy abundance position the Gulf as a future compute hub. Kristie also outlines the gap between vision and execution in projects like NEOM, while Jeremy reflects on how these moves echo earlier global cycles. 00:55 Trade flows flipped direction. China Gulf commerce surpassed Gulf West trade in 2024 because Chinese overcapacity met Gulf demand for infrastructure, construction, and technology. 02:18 Media exposure hides the scale of change. Western and Chinese outlets lack global reach in covering Middle East China ties, which keeps the shift underreported. 08:56 UAE applied the Singapore playbook. Pro business policies, low tax systems, and investor friendly rules drew global hedge funds, family offices, and operators to Dubai and Abu Dhabi. 14:51 Qatar's World Cup showed the model. Gulf capital combined with Chinese labor and construction speed to complete major stadium projects on compressed timelines. 25:32 Sovereign funds deepened two way flows. Middle Eastern allocators increased exposure to Chinese assets as both sides diversified away from US denominated risk. 40:12 AI infrastructure became a national priority. Gulf governments invested heavily in data centers and chip capacity by pairing cheap energy with large land availability. 54:23 NEOM revealed ambition and friction. The 120 kilometer enclosed city concept captured Saudi Arabia's vision but faced delays that showed how difficult execution can be. We kick off season six with the CEO of the Prince Mohammed bin Salman Royal Reserve Development Authority, internationally recognized for his pioneering work in conservation and community-driven environmental management. A visionary conservation leader and human rights advocate known for his pioneering work in sustainable, people-centered environmental management. He rose to prominence as the founding CEO of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park Authority, South Africa's first UNESCO World Heritage Site. On this episode, Andrew and I explore the PMSBR at Wadi Al-Disah, home to 15 ecosystems and an ambitious re-wilding program bringing back locally extinct species like the Persian onager and sand cat. They discuss why the reserve remains unfenced, forming a vital wildlife corridor linking NEOM, the Red Sea, and AlUla. The conversation dives into how tech and AI satellite collars, camera traps, vulture and turtle tracking translate into real conservation impact. Andrew also reflects on leadership lessons from working with Nelson Mandela and highlights community-first initiatives, including a pioneering team of female rangers driving change on the ground. We touch on public access (camping, guided experiences over gate fees), education to combat litter, and the reserve's aspirations for UNESCO recognition. 00:00 Intro03:50 Wild Childhood 05:56 Mandela & Leadership11:39 15-Ecosystems Revealed14:15 Rare Species & Juniper Trees 16:39 Re-wilding Explained21:30 Conservation Tech & AI24:06 Open Corridors & Access28:23 Rangers, Women & Beddouins 33:25 Protection, Education & Vision43:57 UNESCO Bid & Climate55:34 MBS Leadership And Closing PMBSRInstagram https://bit.ly/4mWzx4xTwitter https://bit.ly/4gl4gWILinkedIn https://bit.ly/4pl4XDrWebsite https://bit.ly/467Vs1u The Mo ShowYoutube https://bit.ly/3nDwsZvApple Podcast https://apple.co/3J9ScX4Spotify https://spoti.fi/33dzsC2Anghami https://bit.ly/3mRo1uyInstagram https://bit.ly/2KAwq5vX https://bit.ly/3KanEnJTikTok https://bit.ly/43L92poWebsite https://bit.ly/3H2DhMMEmail info@themopodcast.com Saudia Website https://bit.ly/495n6fBInstagram https://bit.ly/3UgTTdAX https://bit.ly/4beIQY8 Noon Instagram https://bit.ly/3XRScUYWebsite https://bit.ly/44lnA1S Eight Sleephttps://www.eightsleep.com/sa/themoshow/ IWC Instagram https://bit.ly/44dxbFWWebsite https://bit.ly/43K8JMk Brew 92Instagram http://bit.ly/3VN6MeILinkedIn https://bit.ly/42kN65EWebsite https://bit.ly/4grbAjK CreditsAndrew Zaloumis | GuestMo Islam | Host FounderRyan Ismail | COOGregoris Kalai | Head of StrategyFares Saied | Executive ProducerMahmoud Taha | DOPAdnan Alkhateeb | GafferOmar El-Faroug | BTS Photographer Production AssistantTito | Creative DirectorYoussef Hamieh | Show ManagerPowered by "STUCK?" | TranslationThe Mo Show Theme Song by Saud Al-Turki

Andy Wirth and Tony Harris moved halfway across the world to help build Neom: Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's futuristic new city in the Saudi desert. But what they found wasn't the desert utopia of Neom's marketing. Instead, they found a project bleeding cash, led by a screaming CEO, where very little was actually being built.  WSJ's Rory Jones and Eliot Brown explain how Neom fell years behind schedule – and went billions of dollars over-budget – thanks to a culture of runaway spending and never telling the boss “no.” Hosted by Ryan Knutson.  Further Listening: - Neom, Pt 1: Skiing in the Desert  Learn more about your ad choices. In 2017, Saudi Arabia's ambitious, young leader, Mohammed bin Salman, unveiled Neom: a futuristic new city Saudi Arabia would build in the desert. Neom would be a hotspot for tourism like the French Riviera, a center of innovation like Silicon Valley, and a global melting pot like Dubai. It would help transform the Saudi economy. But over the years, that already bold plan grew even more ambitious.   In the first of two episodes about Neom, WSJ's Rory Jones and Eliot Brown explain how an effort to pivot the Saudi economy away from oil grew to encompass plans for a desert ski resort and skyscrapers the length of Connecticut. Plus we hear from two people who uprooted their lives and moved to Neom to help make MBS's dream a reality.
