In 1973, fire killed and injured more people in the United States than in any other industrialized nation in the world. The next year, Congress passed the Federal Fire Prevention and Control Act, a landmark bill that made significant investments in fire research, training, and education. Within a few decades, the U.S. had transformed from a fire-prone outlier, to arguably the safest country in the world.  Today on the podcast, we talk to Dick Gann, one of the most prolific fire researchers in U.S. history, about a new paper that he co-authored that commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Fire Prevention and Control Act. We discuss the legacy of this legislation, and explore several of the research achievements — many of which Gann himself was directly involved with — that have dramatically improved fire safety in the United States over the last half century.  LINKS:  Read the NIST Report, “A Legacy of Fire Safety”  Read the NFPA Journal article by Jesse Roman about why the Fire Prevention and Control Act is still more relevant than ever

This episode references domestic violence and other mature themes. [Lou's Story Part 1/3] Lou's story isn't just about survival—it's a battle cry of reclamation. In this chapter she unravels the deeply personal account of her entanglement with John, her manipulative and abusive ex-boyfriend. The emotional wounds of their relationship left scars that refused to fade, but it was the unexpected moment of seeing him again years later that pulled her back into the shadows of her past. As the trauma resurfaced, Lou found herself grappling with questions she thought she had buried. In retracing the steps of her formative years and confronting the weight of generational trauma, Lou begins to piece together a path toward recovery. But healing isn't a straight line — it's a labyrinth of pain, resilience, and startling realizations that could change everything.   All chapters are available ad free on Patreon: https://patreon.com/BrittaniArd Share your story with Brittani. Guest: Chuck Altvater CRR & Education Branch Chief Every year the National Fire Prevention Association sponsors national fire prevention week, that week is always the week of the Great Chicago fire that happened in 1871.  Every year they have a theme and this year’s theme is Smoke Alarms, Make them work for you.  If smoke alarms do not work, then they will not work for you.  Due to technology, smoke alarms are getting better, and the batteries will last 10 years.  Smoke alarms need to be replaced every 10 years.  If you cannot afford smoke alarms, go to your local fire department and they will help you find affordable smoke detectors.  You should be testing your smoke alarms every month, which is also a good time to talk to your family about a fire escape plan.  It is recommend everyone's sleep with their bedroom door closed and latched at night, it creates a barrier to the person sleeping in the bedroom.  A hollow core door buys you about 20 minutes of protection from even raging fire on the other side.

You have about two minutes to get out of a burning house from the second your smoke alarm goes off. It's critical your alarm works. How many smoke alarms should I have? You should have enough smoke alarms for everyone to hear in every area of your house. You should have them on every level of your home and inside and outside every sleeping area. Test your alarms during the day and again at night to make sure everyone can hear them. Where do smoke alarms go? Read the instructions that come with your smoke alarm to know if it goes on the wall or ceiling. If you don't have the instructions, search your smoke alarm model number online to find them. There will be instructions for manufactured homes and vaulted ceilings. How often should I test my smoke alarm? Press the button on your smoke alarm every month. If you can't reach it, use a broom handle or call a friend for help. While you're near the alarm, dust it off. They can collect dust and bugs that could make them malfunction. Do you recommend the new smoke alarm technologies? If you're shopping for a new alarm, consider the ionization and photoelectric smoke alarms. Photoelectric alarms detect smoldering fires and ionization smoke alarms detect flaming fires. Another alarm style, the multi-criteria alarm, has a sensor to know if a fire is a non-emergency cooking fire or an emergency fire. Where can I get a free smoke alarm? The American Red Cross provides free smoke alarms. Many community organizations and fire departments also give free smoke alarms. Fire departments are also great resources if you have questions about where to put a smoke alarm in your house. What else should I know about smoke alarms? There are three main takeaways: - Make sure your house has smoke alarms. - Test your smoke alarm every month. - Replace smoke alarms every 10 years. Learn more: Smoke alarms: Where to put them, how often to replace batteries Smoke and carbon monoxide alarm safetyIs your smoke or carbon monoxide alarm chirping? Here's what it's telling you

Behavior is a smoke alarm

My New Life

There are lots of parenting experts talking about choosing connection over discipline, but today's guest on My New Life has a fresh take on limit-setting: She compares bad behavior to a smoke alarm going off. Punishment is like taking a hose and pointing it at the alarm. If the pressure is great enough, the alarm will stop. But we still don't know why it went off in the first place. We need to find the fire! Obstetric Social Worker and Parent Educator Genevieve Muir joins Host Jessica Rolph to provide tips on finding the origin of these emotional flare ups. You can find Gen @connectedparentingau.  Takeaways: Gen reminds us that you need to name it to tame it. There's no modifying challenging behavior without figuring out the root cause. No matter what the behavior, children are never choosing to get it wrong. If they're acting out, chances are good they need more connection with you. They are seeking that connection 24 hours a day, and they will seek it any way they can. If your child's not okay, they probably don't want us to fix it or solve it or make it better. They actually just want us to acknowledge their struggle: “You're really not happy about the Nutella, huh?” It's as simple as that. Or, for an older child, you can dig a bit deeper: “I can see you're really struggling with this Nutella and I'm wondering if you're a little bit nervous about going to a new camp today? That can feel scary.” Gen likes the phrase “I won't let you hit” rather than something like “in this family, we don't hit”. Not only does it clearly communicate to the child that they have crossed a boundary, it reminds you that your role is now to step in and keep everybody safe. She says setting boundaries with toddlers is most effective with a calm, but very much in control, physical presence. Remember, one-on-one time can go a long way toward diffusing sibling conflict. Rivalries generally stem from a child feeling like they aren't getting enough of your attention.  Mentioned in this episode: Brought to you by Lovevery.com  Find Gen Muir @connectedparentingau Receive weekly emails about your child's development, and stay in the know about new play essentials, promos, and more by signing up at Lovevery.com Follow Lovevery and Jessica Rolph on Instagram
