Wildfire smoke is deadly and getting deadlier. A recent study published in Nature estimates that if warming continues at the current rate, smoke exposure could kill 70,000 Americans a year by 2050… and researchers expect that Washington could feel some of the biggest impacts. Some researchers say the study points to some of the strongest evidence so far that climate change is endangering people in the United States. Smoke pollution can cause coughing and throat irritation, but it can also lead to long-term respiratory and heart issues. The West Coast in particular is expected to see the biggest increases in smoke pollution. So we’re bringing you another “ask a doctor” segment, where we ask medical professionals to give us the information we need to stay healthy. GUEST: Dr. James Wallace, a family medicine physician and the health officer for Okanogan County. Another mind bending podcast. We begin with a discussion of the article South Bay Magazine did about Jennifer "Open Mind" in their October 2024 issue. It's a well written article and a link can be found on Jennifer's website (JenniferShaffer.com) Jennifer mentioned the book "Tuesdays with Morrie" - odd for her to do so as I just read it last week (without mentioning it). It allowed me to reminisce a bit about my film "Portrait of Julian Baird" which is on the podcast "Hacking the Afterlife" page about my old professor at BU> Then Luana brought for an actor to speak to us - we couldn't guess who it was until it dawned on me (or heard from Luana) that it was an actor who played a role of a pilot in a movie, and that movie was an analogy for what we're doing here. For me, personally, that could only be the "higher self" of the great actor Richard Dreyfuss. Before anyone freaks out - Richard is alive and well, and I saw him talking about the hurricane on Facebook yesterday. But there is this unusual aspect of the research that is mentioned... that is that we exist prior to coming onstage, we plan the journey but only bring a portion of our conscious energy to the stage, and the rest is back home. There's no way to prove this is actually Richard speaking other than for Richard to do his own session with Jennifer, or a medium he knows, or using a hypnotherapist or doing guided meditation. I know that Robert Towne spoke often to Jennifer, I know that he learned new information from his dog Hira during those conversations - information only Hira could have known, that demonstrated to the skeptical Robert that the only logical reason she could know these things was if Hira still existed. And he made me promise to interview him on the flipside. I recall when he asked me - I thought it was the most unusual request I've ever had - but we did so. And if one looks through the recent podcasts, or since he departed the planet, they'll see some interesting conversations with the Oscar winning screenwriter. But it's poignant that the topic was introduced in the way it was - because the Steven Spielberg film ALWAYS was about eternal love, about a pilot who dies while fighting fires, and comes back to help his grieving girlfriend played by Holly Hunter. Jennifer is recalling the performance of "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" by the late JD Souther (who passed just a few days ago). In the film there's a recording of him singing that love song while Richard and Holly Hunter dance. But again - if it really is Richard's higher self showing up, it's a profound insight into how things work. Jennifer mentions the conversation we had with my friend's father Jack Tracey (there's a link on the RichMartini.com page to that article that was published on Medium.com - just search for Jack Tracey and my name to read what he had to say. Jack had dementia and was in hospice care - but he clearly recalled knowing me and discussed what it was like for him - waiting to depart. In this, the topic is about how love never dies, and that our loved ones are always available - and that we can actually access the "higher self" of an individual if need be. The "higher self" is reportedly the conscious energy (soul) of an individual that is "always back home." People in the research report that we bring only a portion of our conscious energy to a lifetime - the average is between 20 and 40% - and the rest is "always home." So when we lose a loved one - as happens in the film ALWAYS, those individuals are available to us when we need them. And it was a surprise to hear it from someone who is still very much on the planet. So apologies to those who could be offended or disconcerted by this information - but no ill intent is intended here. We're reporting what people say from the flipside. As noted, Jennifer works with law enforcement agencies daily, members of the FBI, NYPD have worked with her, and I've been filming people talking to the flipside for fifteen years. Examples can be found in the documentaries FLIPSIDE, TALKING TO BILL PAXTON (where I had 3 mediums ask my old pal questions, and all three had identical answers only Bill could answer) and HACKING THE AFTERLIFE on Amazon or Gaia - an overview of this research. We also have a forum on quora "Hacking the Afterlife" where I answer questions based on the data, research or footage. Glad to know Richard is on the planet, and still working. Glad to know that Jennifer is on the planet and helping us to realize that life goes on. My two cents.

How do we explain to toddlers and nesting birds that they must stay indoors with filtered air to be safe as smoke fills the atmosphere?
If you live on the east coast – or if you know anyone who does – you have heard about the blanket of smoke that is covering much of the eastern seaboard. Where are the wildfires that are causing the haze and what are the health implications. National Correspondent Erin Real is in Connecticut, and joins JT to talk about what makes this different than any other smoky situation.
I was first introduced to Caitlin Doughty through the Ask a Mortician YouTube channel in 2012. Caitlin Doughty is a mortician, advocate, and bête noire of the traditional funeral industry. In 2011 she founded the funeral reform collective The Order of the Good Death, which has spawned the death positive movement. Her educational web series "Ask a Mortician" has been viewed almost 200 million times and all three of her books Smoke Gets in Your Eyes, From Here to Eternity, and Will My Cat Eat My Eyeballs? were New York Times bestsellers. Caitlin was the first funeral director (and might I add first female funeral director) that I ever saw articulacy, honestly and publicly discuss the good, bad, and ugly about the death care industry while challenging the way we “do death” in this country. She was also the first person to encourage me to expand my blogspot.com blog into a YouTube page. Over the years I have watched not only her YouTube channel, but she and her career blossom. The thing that I respect most about Caitlin is that though she has amassed countless supporters through her books, social media, public speaking and non-profit, she seems to remain grounded while balancing the role of the observer and advocate. I recently interviewed Caitlin for the Death and Grief Talk Podcast and consider this episode to be Milestone for The Grave Woman because Caitlin is truly someone in this industry that not only look up to but respect. During our time together I connect with Caitlin heart to heart as she shares how she maintains the balance of her online success and real-life experience, practices self-care, avoids appropriating those that invite her into their sacred space of loss, grief, and celebration and much more. The greatest take away from our interview is that though speaking truth to power, advocacy, educating and speaking up for others can be exhausting, BUT the work that so many of us are doing in death care to create a more equitable, option focused and leveled environment for consumers and death care professionals alike is necessary and not without the reward of positive progressive change. He's back by popular demand! Kristin's dad, DP, returns to the pod to ask critical questions, like: Where's Norm? Where's David?? And do you have at least six months' living expenses in savings??? But first, Brandi starts us off how she often does — with the story of a “perfect” marriage. At least, that's what Teresa Kohnle called it. When her husband, Jim Kohnle, died in a house fire, she was devastated. She told investigators that she'd loved him “more than life itself.” Later that day, she inquired about his life insurance pay-out. Then DP tells us about Ira Bernstein. Ira and Susan Bernstein had serious money. He was a podiatrist. She had her PhD in education. They lived in a gorgeous mansion. They had a pool, a tennis court, plenty of acreage, and a lake. But their marriage was rocky. Ira had numerous affairs and eventually Susan decided she'd had enough. With a nasty divorce looming, Ira and his new girlfriend Kelly Gribeluk hatched a plan. And now for a note about our process. For each episode, Kristin reads a bunch of articles, then spits them back out in her very limited vocabulary. Brandi copies and pastes from the best sources on the web. And sometimes Wikipedia. (No shade, Wikipedia. We love you.) We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the real experts who covered these cases. In this episode, DP pulled from: "The Target" episode of Dateline Secrets Uncovered "Ira Bernstein" from ChillingCrimes.com "Podiatrist Ira Bernstein's Estranged Wife: Kids Fear His Release from Prison" by Robert Brum at Lohud.com "Wealthy Podiatrist Plots to Kill His Wife" an episode of True Crime Daily In this episode, Brandi pulled from: “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes” episode American Monster “Teresa Kohnle” episode Snapped “Woman Drugs Husband And Sets Fire To Their Home, But Claims It Was His Idea” by Benjamin H. Smith, Oxygen “Woman accused of arson in death of husband gets life sentence with parole” by Adam Cook, Dalton Daily Citizen “Teresa Kohnle Accepts Plea To Life With Possibility Of Parole In 2007 Arson/Death Of Her Husband” by Dennis Norwood, The Chattanoogan “Kennedy v. In this episode, Nikki and Steve recap the books they read, shows they watched, and trips they took over the summer of 2022. They talk about the one and only Stanley Tucci, seeing the sights in Rome, and what they've been up to since January.
PHEW today is a doozy - we go completely unscripted and chat about a whole boatload of generally off-topic topics. Mak is recording from Telluride, CO before flying into Denver to thru-hike the Colorado Trail. Today we cover Mak's first DNF at the Spartan Utah Ultra, a preview of the CT, moving to Hawaii for a month, dealing with a lack of structure and a candid look at mental health issues in the past and present. The episode ends with a fun lighthearted discussion about the topic of death prompted by the book "Smoke Gets in the Eyes". Overall, a very chaotic episode that has become par for the course over here.Follow the pod!Instagram @gremlintalkpodYoutube Gremlin Talk PodFollow the host:Tik Tok @makontherunInstagram @maksheasmithYoutube Mak Shea SmithSubscribe, listen, and enjoy wherever you find your podcasts!Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/gremlin-talk/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands
We start things off at the beginning. How does Mad Men's pilot, which spent years in gestation, sit with Mike and Michael 15 years later? This episode also introduces the key segments that will be included in every “DAD MEN” episode. Which host was never a fan of the pilot? Which host has a change of heart about it? Does the show feel like itself quite yet? The only way to find out is to hit the play button. So shut the door and have a seat... it's time for “Dad Men.” Source for Michael's claim about Netflix's animated division: https://www.imore.com/netflix-cancels-slew-animated-projects-amid-attempts-save-money Keep the conversation going by using the #DadMenPodcast hashtag on social media.
