Now that rock star biopics have peaked with Elvis, what else can the genre do but get Weird? Dare to be stupid with Paul, Arlo, and Alex Jonestown Massacre guitarist Kenn Edwards as they discuss Weird: The Al Yankovic story. Everyone's favorite accordionist parodies Oscar bait bologna to tell a fact-free version of his own life story, starring obvious choice Daniel Radcliffe. The gang recounts their history with “Weird” Al, dives into the film's loving homage to early alt-comedy, and can't help but wonder what Madonna thinks of it all.   NEXT: I'm dreaming of a Geek Challenge featuring the holy jolly classic White Christmas and the yuletide wet dream Eyes Wide Shut.     BREAKDOWN 00:00:38  -  Intro / Guest / Theater Trauma 00:15:37  -  A brief history of our heroes histories with “Weird Al” 00:34:35  -  Weird: The Al Yankovic Story 01:41:00  -  Outro / Next     LINKS   The Alex Jonestown Massacre on Spotify       MUSIC “The Weird Al Show Theme” by “Weird Al” Yankovic, Running with Scissors (1999) “Now You Know” by “Weird Al” Yankovic, Weird: The Al Yankovic Story (2022)     GOBBLEDYCARES National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: https://suicidepreventionlifeline.org/  Abortion Funds in Every State: https://bit.ly/AbortionFundsTwitter Support AAPI communities and those affected by anti-Asian violence: https://www.gofundme.com/c/act/stop-aapi-hate Support the AAPI Civic Engagement Fund: https://aapifund.org/ Support Black Lives Matter and find anti-racism resources: https://blacklivesmatters.carrd.co/ The Trevor Project provides information and support to LGBTQ youth: thetrevorproject.org Trans Lifeline: https://translifeline.org/  US (877) 565-8860 Canada (877) 330-6366 National Center for Transgender Equality: transequality.org Advocate for writers who might be owed money due to discontinuance of royalties: https://www.writersmustbepaid.org/  Help teachers and classrooms in need: https://www.donorschoose.org/ Do your part to remove the burden of medical debt for individuals, families, and veterans: https://ripmedicaldebt.org/ Register to vote: https://vote.gov/

Aho, podcast listeners! To celebrate Native American Heritage Month, Paul and Arlo check in on the latest season of Reservation Dogs, possibly the best show on TV. It would be hard to top Rez Dog's freshman year, a revelatory season filled with joy, pain, and a whole bunch of shitasses. Yet that's exactly what Sterlin Harjo and his collaborators have done, deepening the themes of loss and community that made the first season so resonant. The boys rave about the show's core cast–Devery Jacobs, D'Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, Lane Factor, and Paulina Alexis—while lauding Harjo's ability to shine an even brighter light on supporting players like Zahn McClarnon, Jana Schmieding, and Lily Gladstone. A long time ago in an industry far, far away...the end was nigh for Hollywood’s good ol’ days. Charles Manson had arrived, Family in tow, to disrupt the neverending Summer of Love. Quentin Tarantino’s ninth (and penultimate?) film, Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood, takes a look at L.A. in 1969, as Leonardo DiCaprio’s washed-up actor and Brad Pitt’s mysterious stuntman cross paths with rising star (and future Manson victim) Sharon Tate, here played by Margot Robbie. Joining Paul and Arlo to navigate Tarantino’s exploration of a half-century’s worth of pop culture detritus are former Smoke Gets in Your Ears co-hosts Joseph Lewis and Kenn Edwards. Superstar Kenn Edwards returns, as Conversations with Dead People transitions into what it was always meant to be...Conversations about Jonathan Levinson! While discussing episode 417, “Superstar,” Paul indulges in many of his worst tendencies to go off on tangents, pondering the nature of magic as “the language of outcasts,” learning to be more accepting of Buffy Summers, and how Danny Strong has cast his own augmentation spell to become the Jonathan Levinson of the real world. And in 418, “Where the Wild Things Are,” we talk about the baffling absence of Oz, orgasm walls and other unsubtle metaphors, and Paul takes another unfair jab at Marti Noxon. There’s clearly been some body swapping shenanigans going on, because somehow infamous prodigal Conversational-ist Arlo Wiley makes his first appearance in the Dead People mausoleum. We talk around the awkward, metaphorically demonic history between us regarding the origins of this podcast before at last renewing our Faith in each other to discuss this week’s impressive double bill of episodes. In 415, “This Year’s Girl” we see the very welcome return of some long lost fan favorite characters as Faith wakes up from her coma, learns of the fate of her father figure Mayor Wilkins, and shares some tender moments with Joyce. And the extraordinary 416, “Who Are You” gives us two of THE -- BEST -- PERFORMANCES of the entire series, with Sarah Michelle Gellar and Eliza Dushku swapping roles to absolutely unbelievable effect.   For serious, guys...these are two of my personal favorites.   Next: superstar Kenn Edwards returns to discuss 417, “Superstar.” And I guess we’ll talk about 418, “Where the Wild Things Are” too, but really it’s “Superstar.”   THE CROSSOVER Angel 118, “Five by Five”   THE BREAKDOWN Run Time: 01:42:44 00:00:55 - Intro / Guest 00:22:12 - Main Topic 01:35:40 - Outro / Next   THE LIBRARY Library Closed For Filing - Please Come Back Tomorrow   THE LINKS Gobbledygeek Podcast The Avatar Returns Podcast “Joss Whedon’s Yardstick: Feminism, Humanism, and Xander” by Arlo Wiley, Gobbledygeek (Arlo wants to be sure you know this is old and his opinions on this topic have evolved.)   THE MUSIC “Conversations (feat. I guess we have to talk...   I know, I know, it’s been a while. You thought this podcast was dead and buried. But as so many before you have learned, in Sunnydale...dead don’t take! I’m back, I have more to say, and I’ve brought the most relevant rock musician in the world Kenn Edwards back with me. This time we’re discussing one of the big mile markers of the series, “Hush.” We talk about the debut of so-shy-she’s-almost-speechless Tara; Riley Finn and other classic Greco-Roman Heroes; the subversion of princess and tower tropes; the very significant difference between language and communication; and the most (intentionally?) anti-climactic climactic screams in genre television history.   But of course the real reason to prick up your ears and listen is to hear what we have to say about the Gentlemen. For example we talk about how Ted Buchanan represents the “programming” of entitled white males; how Buffy the Vampire Slayer knows we hate how clueless Joyce is and keeps on beating that dead horse intentionally to make us all feel as frustrated as her daughter does; we ask what’s up with all those upside down items in the school vending machine; and Kenn say I really need to look at the ultra-cheesy rubber monsters on the series in a completely different way.   Bonus: I make a controversial confession. For the (belated) inaugural installment of Four-Color Flashback 2018, wherein Paul and Arlo will be discussing a different classic superhero story each month, they've recruited their old pal Kenn Edwards to help them discuss Batman: A Death in the Family by writer Jim Starlin and artist Jim Aparo. Kenn knows a thing or two about the Caped Crusader, having been part of the Batman Immortal fan film project. However, he's never read this particular story, in which the Joker savagely beats Robin to death. That puts him on equal footing with our hosts: it's one of Arlo's blind spots and Paul hasn't read it since it was published in 1988. They're all a little shocked by how anachronistic its goofy plotting and dialogue seem given its release in a post-Dark Knight Returns landscape. Superhero comics were starting to mature, and this one feels like it may have gotten left behind. The gang discusses the impact of Robin's death; whether Bruce’s hypocrisy is a bug or a feature; the ludicrous political implications of the Joker’s scheme; and why the follow-up story A Lonely Place of Dying is much better. Plus, Arlo is still watching Disney cartoons. Next: be vewwy, vewwy quiet. Plus, the boys talk Marvel's Civil War plans and AJ reads Mary Shelley's classic Frankenstein.     Next: Smoke Gets in Your Ears: A Mad Men Podcast co-hosts Kenn Edwards and Joseph Lewis check in to discuss Stanley Kubrick's 1981 Stephen King adaptation The Shining.

KENN EDWARDS and JOSEPH WILLIAM LEWIS, great friends and former Debatable guests, return together to talk about the big questions! Starting as having no idea what we were going to discuss, we quickly found ourselves jumping into the worries & concerns that kind of plague adult life. We explore maturity, generational differences, what makes a man, how we define success, how marriage and kids fit into our life plans, being present for one's existence and a shitload of philosophical questions along the way. Later, we revisit the topic of filmmaker Kevin Smith, being a part of his coterie audience and what we thought about his new film, "Tusk." Enjoy going down the rabbit hole!Kenn on TwitterJoseph on TwitterSo Let's Get to the Point podcast (and on iTunes)Smoke Gets In Your Ears podcastProject BatmanNowheresville - Joseph's pilot episodeFUCKING HILARIOUSNESSMusic on this podcast:Artist: Spoon - Song: Paper Tiger - Album: Kill the MoonlightArtist: Henry Mancini - Song: Tana's Theme - Album: Touch of Evil OSTCopyrights are owned by the artists and their labels. Come and get your love, boys and girls: the Guardians of the Galaxy have arrived. Paul and AJ abduct the young, impressionable Kenn Edwards (So Let's Get to the Point host/Smoke Gets in Your Ears co-host), leading him on a whirlwind tour of the universe, discussing the finer points of James Gunn's sci-fi blockbuster. Among those points: whether or not, ten movies in, the film marks progress for Marvel Studios; the unlikely (or perhaps the most likely) breakout characters; and that bitchin' soundtrack. Plus, AJ goes in for a sleep test and gets back up on his Spider-Ham soapbox. Next: Joseph Lewis returns for another gathering of the Turtle...uh, Tribe? Is that a thing? Anyway, this time the gang's discussing the new Michael Bay-produced Ninja Turtles movie.

Podcaster, burgeoning stand-up, musician & music lover, KENN EDWARDS, joins me on the show to get down to the deep stuff. We address the love & hate relationship the film community has with filmmaker Kevin Smith and we discuss Kenn's admiration for his idols -- including Smith, "Weird" Al Yankovic and Chris Hardwick -- and the transparency they share with their fans. We touch on Kenn's own show and his recent interview with Yankovic, as well as what shapes people trying to do their own creative thing, and what sets Kenn apart from most: a positive, down-for-anything attitude. We finish up the episode with a lesson on concert-going etiquette, and Kenn and I play some well-established games.Kenn on twitterSo Let's Get to the Point podcast (and on iTunes)Smoke Gets In Your Ears podcastProject BatmanMusic on this podcast:Artist: Fritz Monath - Song: TogethernessArtist: Cibo Matto - Song: Sugar Water - Viva! Wise man say: forgiveness is divine, but only listening to Paul, AJ, and Nowheresville director/Smoke Gets in Your Ears co-host Joseph Lewis discuss the original 1990 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film will get you past those pearly gates. Or something, a little birdie told us. But not, like, a mutant bird. Anyway. The gang has wildly varying experiences with the Turtles and the movie: Paul is old enough to have read some of the Eastman and Laird stuff when it was new, and saw the movie in theaters; AJ, being a wee little bairn, claims this is the first movie he ever saw and has loved the Turtles ever since; and Joe, well...Joe's right in the Turtle-loving demographic, but he never got into them as a kid, and that pattern holds 20-some-odd years later. How does the film hold up? Is it slathered in enough mozzarella to deserve bargain bin status? Or does it remain crisp, like the finest pepperoni? To put a merciful end to all pizza-related puns, I'm ending this description right here, so you know, go listen. Plus, the gang gets weird with Mandatory Fun and talks about Marvel's Avengers NOW! initiative. Next: that other Smoke Gets in Your Ears co-host, Kenn Edwards, drops by for the next installment of this year's Four-Color Flashback, discussing The Sandman: Vol. V - A Game of You.

With How to Train Your Dragon 2 prepared to soar into theaters next weekend, you'd better believe superfan Paul was going to find some way to celebrate it. And celebrate it he has, with frequent guests Eric Sipple and Kenn Edwards joining Paul and AJ for a commentary of the first film. The gang discusses how the film overcame their initial low expectations, why having Roger Deakins as a "visual consultant" was crucial, the way the movie expertly moves the plot forward at only 90 minutes, and which of them is a dog person (much to the shame of the other three). Watch along and enjoy.

Hello, Birmingham! Live from the Alabama Phoenix Festival, it’s Gobbledygeek! Paul and AJ returned to APF 2014 to host a series of panels about everything from summer movies to Orphan Black, and while they were there, they thought it’d be neat to record a live podcast. Joining them in the hot seat is Gobbledy-stalwart Kenn Edwards; in the audience, frequent guests/loved ones/freaks of nature Eric Sipple, Joseph Lewis, and Pam Smith. The gang talks to the crowd—including a man dressed as Casey Jones and two teenaged Bronies—about how the con’s going, why they enjoy the sense of community it provides, and that awful-looking Ninja Turtles movie. Next: Paul and AJ return to their boring, excitement-free home lives to discuss the original Japanese Godzilla. And I guess they’ll mention the new one too.

Your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man is swinging back into theaters with The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and we're on hand to dissect it. There is just so much going on in this movie that Paul and AJ have recruited another villain for their burgeoning franchise: Kenn Edwards of So Let's Get to the Point and Project Batman. The gang is sharply divided on just how good Marc Webb's sequel is and just how much plot is too much plot, but the common ground is surprising. Namely, the film's faithful portrayal of Spidey himself; the adorability of Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy; and the power of one particularly iconic moment. Plus, Paul shares some shocking casting news, and AJ and Kenn dig on Louie. Next: K. Dale Koontz and Ensley F. Guffey join us to discuss their book Wanna Cook? The Complete, Unofficial Companion to Breaking Bad. Meth and/or egomania not required.

The long and winding road of the Gobbledy-Book Club has led us here, through factories and caves and cellars, to the final two chapters of J.J. Abrams and Doug Dorst's S. Paul and AJ host an all-star jam band reunion of their co-readers: Paul's better half Pam Smith, whom we have to thank for just about everything; The Debatable Podcast host and Ukrainian royal Greg Sahadachny; and Kenn Edwards of So Let's Get to the Point and Project Batman, who might just be recording your entire existence as a podcast. Believe it or not, the show is (mostly) able to contain all five of them as they get to the important business of discussing the conclusions of both Ship of Theseus and the Jen/Eric marginalia, the importance of endings, and the open-ended nature of many of the tale's mysteries (sound familiar, Lost fans?). Plus, the gang says goodbye to the late, great Harold Ramis. Next: the boys are on their own again to pay tribute to the work of Harold Ramis. Abrams and Doug Dorst's S. The book--both books!--is heading toward its conclusion, so of course, things only get more complicated. S. becomes the assassin he was destined to be, Jen and Eric draw closer and closer, and major headway is made in the pair's investigation. Oh, and there's a napkin. We talk a lot about the napkin. Plus, the gang talks about Funko's incredibly expansive 2014 toy line. Next: discussion of S. draws to a close with an all-star jam band reunion of our co-readers.

If the boys scratched the surface last week, this time they plunge headfirst into the dark, mysterious world of S. Come on in, the water's fine.     Next: discussion of S. continues as Kenn Edwards of So Let's Get to the Point and Project Batman helps explore chapters 7 and 8.
