Not only was Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs Disney's first full-length animated feature, host Randy Thornton reveals the film generated the world's first Soundtrack Album.
Gurdip returns this week for a lively discussion about the soundtrack to Elvis' 1968 film "Speedway," which co-starred Nancy Sinatra, who features on two tracks, making her one of the few artists to ever appear on an album with Elvis during his lifetime. The guys dig a bit into the recording sessions (which, minus Sinatra's contributions, were primarily done at MGM's soundstage instead of at RCA Studio B as usual) and how this move affected the production quality of the album, the poor choice of promotional single material, unfortunate timing of the film & soundtrack's release, and ponder how Elvis' final soundtrack LP for a fictional film managed to, like the first movie album from 11 years earlier, end up with nearly half the songs featured not even appearing in the film itself. The guys also catch up on a bunch of listener emails, and then for Song of the Week, Gurdip selects Elvis' unique 1957 interpretation of the spiritual "I Believe," while Justin goes much lighter, picking "Poor Boy," recorded for and featured in his first feature, Love Me Tender. Producer Stéphane Humez, sound engineer Maxime Marion, and film music journalist Kaya Savas take you behind the scenes into the approach for the newly expanded and remastered The Rock album for Intrada Records. Learn how the trio all know each other and how this release came to be. Stéphane takes us behind the presentation of the album, and why this album assembly makes the most sense for a listening experience. Stéphane also talks about the process of getting access to certain masters, and how all of that material made its way to Maxime. Maxime takes us behind his mastering process, including how it was important to stay true to the original sound of the score. Maxime also shares how certain tracks were badly damaged, and how he approached the restoration process. Kaya takes us behind the liner notes and how Nick Glennie-Smith, Hans Zimmer, Harry Gregson-Williams and John Finklea were essential in helping piece together the picture of how the score was made. Happy New Year to all listeners out there and welcome to the first new episode of 2023! In this inaugural episode of the new year, I am accompanied by popular soundtrack album producer and editor Neil S. As always, I appreciate when Neil can spend time to relay the details and experiences on these albums! Happy birthday, Elvis! This week, we're taking a look back at the 1966 soundtrack for the movie "Spinout," one of the first Elvis albums Gurdip ever owned and therefore one he holds with great affection. Has it been wrongly maligned and lumped in with other movie soundtracks? Or has it earned a place as forgettable 60s fluff? And what to make of the bonus tracks? All that and more, but before that, we react to the single of Jamieson Shaw's fun new "Toxic Las Vegas" remix from Baz Luhrmann's film, mashing up Britney Spears and Elvis, as well as Rolling Stone magazine's placement of Elvis in their Top 200 Singers list. For Song of the Week, Gurdip dons his matador costume and faces down "El Toro," the "Fun in Acapulco" song about an unbeatable bull. Then, Justin delves into Bread's heartbreakingly beautiful minor 1972 hit "Aubrey" then tries to unpack one of the most obscure, rarely-heard Elvis concert recordings and speculate on what a seemingly minor lyrical tweak might have meant, if intentional. James Reams (1956-2022)So many songs to sing; and so little time to sing them. That was the mantra of James Reams, beloved and well-known Bluegrass performer and song writer. Because of his driving promotion of Bluegrass and Americana music, he had earned several nicknames durning his lifetime that reflected his contributions to the genre; Kentucky Songbird, Father of Brooklyn Bluegrass, and Ambassador of Bluegrass. Unfortunately for those of us who loved him, and the many people who were impacted by his zest for life and music he has passed on. On June 17th at 4:30 in the afternoon he passed away, at home surrounded by family and friends who loved him. Just a few days before his death, he commented to those sitting by his bed, “Dying – this gives me an idea of a new song.”James who was raised in the hills of Appalachia, was exposed to bluegrass from the time he could walk. At an early age he showed a talent for writing and performing the music of the region. James spent many an hour watching the regional variety show “Cas Walker Farm and Home Hour”. The Farm and Home Hour featured many of the pioneers of bluegrass and launched many emerging stars. This, along with his father's love of bluegrass had a profound effect on him.Kentucky SongbirdJames earned the nickname Kentucky Songbird by building an extensive library of work during his three-decade career and ten album releases. IBMA nominated him as Emerging Artist of the Year. The same year he was also nominated for Recording Event of the Year for his album James Reams, Walter Hensley and the Barons of Bluegrass. His latest album release occurred early in 2022. It is a massive 2 CD release with thirty songs - Like a Flowing River & Soundtrack Album on Mountain Redbird Music. This highly anticipated project follows the release of a documentary film from the previous year. The documentary celebrates the long musical performing and song writing career of James.Father of Brooklyn BluegrassThis James identifier was conferred on him because of his role in being a founding father of the Park Slope Bluegrass Oldtime Music Jamboree in Brooklyn, New York. This music event started in 1998, was organized by James, along with his long-time partner Tina Aridas. The event was a glorious celebration of bluegrass music. It accomplished this by combining live performances and workshops over a two-day period in September each year. The event was popular and attracted top performers from the northeast, and hundreds of participants every year.Ambassador of BluegrassJames promoted the spread of bluegrass beyond the release of his albums and extensive touring. A major accomplishment of his was the releasing of two documentary films that sought to spread the music he loved to people who otherwise not had an opportunity to sample this foot-stomping music. In 2021 the documentary of James' bluegrass life in was released, Like a Flowing River: A Bluegrass Passage. The film that captures the spirit of what it means to be a musician, documenting all of the twists and turns that occur on a musician's journey. On top of the previously mentioned accomplishments, James was also an ex-president of the Arizona Bluegrass Association. James has been a busy contributor to bluegrass from the early days of his career. His passion for music can be seen in his everyday life. You can be sure if there is a kitchen table in heaven, James will be sitting at it singing a soulful tune.Music from Mountain Redbird MusicLinks:http://www.jamesreams.comhttps://bluegrasstoday.com/james-reams-passes/https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Reamshttps://www.youtube.com/user/MrJamesReamsSupport the show

Welcome to the next new episode! I am pleased to be joined once more by soundtrack album producer and editor, Neil S. Bulk. As heard in previous years, which long-time listeners may recall, I've invited Neil back to reflect on his notable projects from the prior year, in this case 2021, for the various soundtrack record labels such as La La Land Records and Varese Sarabande.

The Lion King: The Gift“ vertreten. We're back, and once again Geektown is chatting with some of the best composers working in US film & TV right now. Last week I got to have a video chat with composer Dan Licht, the man behind the music of serial killer tv show 'Dexter', medical drama 'Body of Proof' and also provided additional music for 'The Blacklist. Dan has also worked on a number of films, including 'Children of the Corn II' and 'Hellraiser: Bloodline', along with video games such as the 'Silent Hill' franchise, and the excellent 'Dishonored'. Over a long and varied career, Dan has travelled the world collecting weird and wonderful instruments, as well as finding new and interesting ways to play more traditional ones! He's recently completed the Soundtrack Album for Dexter Season 8, and is currently working on the second season of The Red Road, starring Jason Momoa (Game of Thrones, Stargate: Atlantis) For more about Dan and his music, click here.
