Happy Halloween! Let's talk about Necrobotics and how we use corpses for robotic limps. And did you hear about the Covid outbreak at Foxconn? And what about reading minds via MRI technology? And would you want Alexa to speak with your dead grandma's voice? How about robots with tentacle arms? And what about those 3k channels that are deleted by YouTube every month? And influencers can now be stalked by AI! The tech juggernaut revealed it was building the technology to allow its voice assistant device to impersonate people with a recording of somebody's voice provided it is less than one minute long. In a video released to showcase the tech, a synthetic voice of a deceased grandmother reading a story to her grandson.Dead spiders are "necrobotic grippers"! In what may well be a case of bio-inspired robotics gone too far, the researchers are exploring how the dead arachnids can double as a robotic gripper using hydraulic pressure.Part of the versatility of the human hand's ability to pick up almost anything comes from being able to apply a gentle touch to frail or oddly-shaped objects. Taking inspiration from animals to build robots designed to accomplish a specific task is far from a new idea. The human hand might be incredibly dextrous, but it's also incredibly hard to replicate its abilities for a robot. For the first time, scientists report they have devised a method that uses functional magnetic resonance imaging brain recordings to reconstruct continuous language. In a preprint posted September 29 on bioRxiv, a team at the University of Texas at Austin details a “decoder,” or algorithm, that can “read” the words that a person is hearing or thinking during a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) brain scan. He notes that the amount of fMRI data collected matches most other studies that use fMRI recordings, though he had fewer research subjects.Influencers may crave attention by “occupation,” but a new AI experiment shows they can't always control their admirers' gazes. While attention-seeking influencers may garner little sympathy, anyone can enter the crosshairs of AI surveillance.10,000 YouTube channels removed, which builds on the more than 30k YouTube channels that YouTube has removed over the past year as part of the same push against Chinese influence campaigns. Its our favorite time of year and the boys are dressed for the occasion!
Happy Halloween and welcome back to Artbeat Radio! We have a spooky episode for you today! Listen in as San Diego, ART Center, and MAP all work together to bring you all things spooky! We have a scary sound reel, a cover of Monster Mash, and some facts about bats! What are your favorite parts of Halloween? Let us know! Thank you to Jack Medved, Julian Camerino, Claire Feth, Matthew Fotinos, Jonathan Garcia, Kaitlyn Johanson, Santiago Milanino, Stephanie Monis, Renee Morneau, Sarah Shaw, Brian Corder, Aaron Francis, Lisa Mellow, Sergio Leal, Ricky Parral, Nancy Terrey, and Eric Recillas Thanks for listening and tune in next time! For more information about our organization, please visit our website www.ableartswork.org Audio Transcription: (Please listen on Podomatic or Spotify to view the full transcript) *Intro music by Artbeat Radio staff* Music, stories, and more! You're listening to Artbeat Radio, a program of Able ARTS Work. Nancy: Welcome back to Artbeat Radio. Today, we celebrate Group: Halloween! Brian: Coming up is the song that we've been covering called ,The Monster Mash, and it's a graveyard smash and its groooooovy! *Cover of The Monster Mash plays* Nancy: Next, we have a spooky sound reel by San Diego. Listen in as we hear Zombies and Ghosts. Hit it, San Diego! *growling and moaning heard with footsteps. A door creaks open. Chains are heard, followed by ghostly moans and zombie noises* Eric: Up next, we present a special guest named, Jack. This man knows a lot about bats and he's going to tell us all about it. Take it away, Jack! Jack: Boo! *laughter* Got you, didn't I? I know that Halloween is coming soon, but there's a classic Halloween animal that's probably one of the most misunderstood. Today, I'm going to tell you all about bats, but remember, don't listen to the scary myths about them but before we can get started let me tell you something here. It's our job- no, our duty to dispel the popular notion about them. How's that going to help? Well, let's get started here. Bats have good eyesight. There's never a bat that's blind. Bats aren't really scary. The reality is they're shy and gentle creatures. They're harmless! Bats do hang by their feet. How do they do that? Bats feet hook backwards. Their toe claws are hooked so they can hang upside down while they sleep! All bats have an amazing technique called echolocation. Come on, say it with me! Echo...lo... cation! Well, let me show you how it works. When he makes a sound, like a high-pitched squeak, the sound bounces off an object and the sound comes back to the ear. To let them sense their surroundings it in fact they can detect objects as thin as a human hair in total darkness. A little brown bat can eat over 600 mosquitos in an hour! Which makes it a less itchy place here. Goodbye bug spray, hello bats! Did you know that some bats fly South for the winter? and speaking of which- from Mexico all the way to South America- The Vampire Bat! The most misunderstood bad in the world. But don't worry, vampire bats don't get blood from people. *buzzer sound* It's just not true. Vampire bats don't get blood from people at all. See, they prefer mammals and birds native to their environments. Did you know there are about 1,100 different kinds of bats in the world! And they're all so different! but the biggest ones are the great Indian Flying Fox and the Gold Crown Fruit bat. It's not how you look, it's who you are. Bats are the good guys! They're our friends. *Outro music by Artbeat Radio staff* We hope you enjoyed this episode of Artbeat Radio. For more information, please go to our website. Ableartswork.org. Thanks for listening and tune in next time!
