Welcome back to Watch With Jen. Just in time for the fifth anniversary of the podcast (which officially began on March 3, 2020), I'm releasing the first of at least a two-part episode devoted to L.A. Movies. Like everyone else, I watched in horror as the Santa Ana wind wildfires ripped through a city that I dearly love at the start of 2025. Unable to contribute financially to the many worthy charities and Go Fund Me accounts that were launched in its wake, nor volunteer on the ground from where I live in Phoenix, I figured the next best thing that I could do was to pay tribute to some of the wonderfully rich, diverse, & creatively inspiring films that have been made in the city. My earnest hope is that it might inspire more productions to shoot there in the future (which would bring necessary jobs back to L.A.) and also to give listeners a nice little reprieve from the stresses of this impossibly difficult year. Each week has felt like its own horror movie for so many people in my orbit, including myself. Our inaugural episode for season six features a staggeringly great lineup of artists & film minds. You'll hear from CALIFORNIA BEAR author Duane Swierczynski on JACKIE BROWN, Senior Vice President of The Black List Kate Hagen on MIRACLE MILE, film critic and UC Denver professor Walter Chaw on THE DRIVER & HICKEY & BOGGS, and WHO INVITED THEM filmmaker and author Duncan Birmingham on SWINGERS. A feature length tour of Los Angeles in the movies, I hope you enjoy the launch of Season 6. And as we head into my favorite season, perhaps it'll inspire you to get ready to visit the City of Angels again or at the very least, eagerly anticipate the second part of these talks which wander into Lynchian and Friedkin territory. Thank you so much for joining me these past five years; we'll be hitting the 250th episode of the podcast this season which is mind-boggling to me & I couldn't do it without your support.Originally Posted on Patreon (3/3/25) here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/123479696Theme Music: Solo Acoustic Guitar by Jason Shaw, Free Music Archive Shop Watch With Jen logo Merchandise in Logo Designer Kate Gabrielle's Threadless Shop (+ Direct Link to the Mug) Donate to the Pod via Ko-fi
This week, we're checking in to the heartbreak hotel and taking the express checkout to Hell as Spooktober continues with a minor forgotbuster based on a story by Stephen King. It's 2007's 1408, directed by Mikael Håfström, and starring John Cusack, Samuel L. Jackson, Mary McCormack, Jasmine Jessica Anthony, Tony Shaloub, Isiah Whitlock Jr. and Len Cariou. The movie is not nearly scary enough to really leave a lasting impression, but it's not bad either, as its Swedish director injects a good amount of visual flair into a one-location concept, and Cusack is more than capable of carrying the load in what is largely a one-man show. Plus: We've got a mixed bag of theatrical field reports, as our intrepid hosts have combined to see The Wild Robot and Megalopolis! If you'd like to watch the movie before listening along to our discussion, 1408 is currently streaming on Hollywood Suite north of the border at the time this episode was released. You can probably also find it at your local library. Other works discussed in this episode include the Netflix Fear Street trilogy, Who Invited Them?, Late Night With The Devil, V/H/S/2, V/H/S: Viral, Cloverfield, The Blair Witch Project, [·REC], Quarantine, Searching, Paranormal Activity, The Mist, Scream, Talk To Me, Night of the Living Dead, Resident Evil, Dawn of the Dead (2004), 28 Days Later, Shaun of the Dead, Friday the 13th Part 2, The Babadook, Malignant, Barbarian, Terrifier, Star Trek (2009), Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens, Mr. McMahon, Morbius, Poltergeist, The Shining, Room 104, Planet Terror, Death Proof, Halloween (2007), The Devil's Rejects, and Black Sheep. We'll be back next week as Spooktober continues with a well-regarded horror classic from one of the original masters of the genre, as we finally catch up with Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds, currently streaming in Canada on Netflix at the time of publication. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!

Surprise! Since next week marks the anniversary of when I started this podcast, I'm dropping this episode a few days early as a thank you for your support & listenership over the years. (Note: I haven't decided how to celebrate the date yet, but I think a good start would be not forgetting it like I usually do, haha.) Season 5 has kicked things off in a wonderfully nostalgic mode so far with several installments I've recorded about films of the '80s & '90s, which I'm hoping casts the same sort of warm, glowy, Gen X memory-filled spell on you that it did on me as I researched & prepped for these episodes. And who better to focus on for a look back at this era than John Cusack whose onscreen alter-ego so many of us grew up alongside? Returning to the podcast to investigate is filmmaker & author Duncan Birmingham, who started revisiting Cusack's films towards the end of '23 & pitched this terrific idea to zero in on the Quintessential Cusack era from SAY ANYTHING...(1989) to HIGH FIDELITY (2000). Citing multiple other films along the way, in this appreciative, analytical look back, we focus on his work in three other tremendous films including THE GRIFTERS, GROSSE POINTE BLANK, & BEING JOHN MALKOVICH. Giving plenty of love to his outstanding collaborators & including stories from our own lives & the way our relationships with these characters & films change with age, this is just the thing to queue up & maybe blast from your boombox in some sort of grand romantic declaration as you head into your weekend.Duncan's Bio: A writer and filmmaker based in Los Angeles, today's guest Duncan Birmingham was an executive producer and screenwriter for IFC's MARON and also served as a co-executive producer and writer on the Starz series BLUNT TALK. Additionally, Duncan's short films have premiered at festivals like Sundance and AFI, and his screenplay SWINGLES, which Paramount purchased, was also on The Black List. Recently, his lively, irreverent short-story collection THE CULT IN MY GARAGE was published by Maudlin House in 2021, & in '22, he wrapped & released his excellent first feature-length film as a writer-director called WHO INVITED THEM.Originally Posted on Patreon (2/23/24) here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/99081183
We were so impressed with last year's home invasion horror comedy, “Who Invited Them,” that getting the chance to interview the mastermind behind this thriller was an absolute delight. Tune in to hear all about how Writer/Director, Duncan Birmingham, got the idea for this movie, how lucky he felt assembling its talented cast, and most importantly — why there's no question mark at the end of the film's title.

Having joined me in 2022 for one of my favorite conversations devoted to director Hal Ashby in the fifth episode of the third season, he's back for the fifth episode of the fourth to discuss writer-director Noah Baumbach's career over the decades & the films KICKING AND SCREAMING, THE SQUID & THE WHALE, GREENBERG, FRANCES HA, & MARRIAGE STORY. Note: If you hear me blank on things a bit more than usual in this episode, it's because I was battling an unrelenting sinus infection but was determined to power through & have an analytical conversation about outstanding talky indies with Duncan, who was coming off of the tail end of a bad cold himself! 'Tis the season! Nonetheless, it's a very rich discussion for fans of the filmmaker's work wherein we assessed recurring themes, compared the ways in which newer films & characters commented on past ones, & celebrated Baumbach's rich collaborators as well. It's time for the show's oldest — and LONGEST — movie yet! The 1963 ensemble comedy It's a Mad (four times) World featured every funny person in the world, made a ton of money and had a staggeringly long theme song. Nearly 60 years later, can this one make our hosts laugh, or will it suffer the fate that a number of comedy classics have on the show? This week's recommendations: Robin has ample thoughts on Elvis. Sean likes everything, but especially Barbarian. Kahmeela recommends Honk for Jesus (with qualifications) and Who Invited Them (after explaining what it is).
This week we're joined by filmmaker Duncan Birmingham! He's a writer, TV producer and filmmaker who helped create the IFC series Maron and was a writer on the Starz show Blunt Talk. His debut feature film Who Invited Them was just released on Shudder! Then we dig into Brian De Palma's Dressed to Kill, a film that is absolutely stunning and incredibly hurtful to trans viewers. As three cis people, we do try to tackle the themes but we also wanted to include writings about the film that we referenced in the episode. FANGORIA Presents: Nightmare University (with Dr. Rebekah McKendry)
On Episode 43 of Fangoria's COLORS OF THE DARK Elric and Bekah discuss new films PEARL, BODIES BODIES BODIES, SALOUM, WHO INVITED THEM, DEVIL IN OHIO & round two of BARBARIAN. The Duo then sit down for an in-depth conversation with the director of BARBARIAN - Zach Cregger, to discuss the wild films origins, casting, writing without a roadmap and some of the horror films that inspired him along the way. We do go into some spoilers in the interview so recommend folks watch the film first.
When we covered X earlier this year, it never crossed our minds that it would be the first part of a trilogy. With Pearl around the corner and the announcement of MaXXXine, Ti West has at least three movies ready to go. We wonder how they are all connected and how far the story can actually go. It is about time for a new horror franchise, but can the X universe adequately fill that void?We here at Adventures in Movies love horror anthologies. They are fun in a way that is unique to them and are a throwback to the scary stories we read as kids. The Red Book Ritual does not get off to the best start, but that is okay since anthologies are expected to be a hit and miss affair. Unfortunately, things would get much worse. The Red Book Ritual includes a story that one of us thought was the worst thing we have seen this year. It has comical voice acting, is horribly dubbed, and just ends. We try to figure out the confusing movie since it is inconsistent and seems to have no point other than to include jump scares and end its segments at random moments.Who Invited Them was much more coherent. The film is about a couple how have thrown a housewarming part at their fancy new house in The Hills. Unfortunately, they have some uninvited guests who do not seem to know that the night is over. They also harbor a dark secret.Home invasion is sub-genre that tends to make even the most hardened horror fan uncomfortable. The movies are built on the idea of how it can easily happen to you. Who Invited Them is a Shudder original that takes things one step further. It is not a case of what might happened but something everyone in the audience has probably already experienced. Obviously, the movie takes things to extremes, but there is a relatability that most of us do not find in other home invasion movies. These invaders have not forced their way in; they were invited-sorta. This puts the story in a realm that is a little more comfortable and easygoing. But was this a mistake? Tension is important to these types of films, and Who Invited Them goes about building it in a way that will not work for some. We talk about whether something obviously being just a little off is enough to carry an entire thriller. Plus, subplots that exist just for the sake of it.Adventures in Movies! is a part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network. Morbidly Beautiful is your one stop shop for all your horror needs. Shudder has been quite diligent with their recent onslaught of exclusives. We covered What Josiah Saw a few weeks ago and gave it an excellent review. We're back this week with another Shudder Exclusive, WHO INVITED THEM? Written and directed by Duncan Birmingham, a relatively new voice in the horror genre. Intro: “Necromaniacs” – Mike Hill Outro: “What About Us” – Handsome Furs
On a cold Halloween night in 1963, six-year-old Michael Myers brutally murdered his 17-year-old sister, Judith. He was sentenced and locked away for 15 years. But on October 30, 1978, while being transferred for a court date, a 21-year-old Michael Myers steals a car and escapes Smith's Grove. He returns to his quiet hometown of Haddonfield, Illinois, where he looks for his next victims. Duncan Birmingham is a writer, director, and actor living in Los Angeles. He is currently a consultant and writer on Maron on IFC and a writer and co-executive producer on Blunt Talk. In 2021, he released a short story collection, The Cult in My Garage from Maudlin House. His feature film Who Invited Them is currently streaming on Shudder and AMC+ on Amazon Prime. I've become a big fan of Duncan's over the past couple of years and the new film totally sucked me in. Great film, great chat, great guy! Thanks for listening. Kyler -- Grab a copy of Duncan's book The Cult In My Garage. Skylight Books - Los Angeles Amazon
Today I'm joined by writer/director Duncan Birmingham to discuss his work on the incredible Shudder original film WHO INVITED THEM. Adam and Margo's housewarming party is a success. One couple linger after the other guests, revealing themselves to be wealthy neighbors. As one night cap leads to another, Adam and Margo suspect their new friends are duplicitous strangers --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/followingfilms/support
From a family reunion you don't want to attend, to party crashers with not-so-pure intentions, the movies we discuss this week are all about invites gone wrong. “The Invitation” feels like a Hallmark romance… with fangs, blood, and murder, while “Who Invited Them” is uncomfortably effective for anyone who's had to entertain strangers for way too long.
The infamous line from Texas Chainsaw Massacre is the theme of this week's episode, because actor JOHN DUGAN is on the show this week with the terror trio! Get ready for some wild stories from John's time as the role of GRANDPA SAWYER on the set of the film, plus other stories from movies past and present! Look, if you will, at the odd couple in the corner. Our shopkeeper believes they are party crashers. Is their intent to have a good time or is it more sinister than that? That is the question our shopkeeper will discuss as we look at the new Shudder original, Who Invited Them. We'll look at the story, the characters, the themes, the thrills and the horror, as well as the things that worked and didn't work with this film. Striking while the iron is hot and while people's schedules are most open, we're back with another bonus episode for you this week and you are definitely in for a treat.A writer and filmmaker based in Los Angeles, today's guest Duncan Birmingham was an executive producer and screenwriter for IFC's "Maron" and also served as a co-executive producer and writer on the Starz series "Blunt Talk" as well. Additionally, Duncan's short films have premiered at such festivals as Sundance and AFI, and his screenplay "Swingles," which was bought by Paramount, was also on The Black List. Recently, his lively, irreverent short-story collection "The Cult in My Garage" was published by Maudlin House in 2021, and in other exciting news, he just wrapped his first feature-length film as a writer-director called "Who Invited Them?" starring Ryan Hansen, Melissa Tang, Timothy Granaderos, and Perry Mattfeld. In easily one of my favorite research-intensive episodes so far on Watch With Jen, Duncan joined me to cover the incredible run of films made by chronically under-discussed Oscar-winning editor turned masterful '70s director Hal Ashby. An empathetic collaborative filmmaker who was fascinated by human relationships, in this rich ninety-minute conversation, we delve into the films "Harold and Maude," "The Last Detail," "Shampoo," "Coming Home," and "Being There."Here you'll hear stories about Ashby fighting with the studios over marketing and foul language, his notably democratic film sets where everyone had a voice, ambitious abandoned projects, as well as thoughts on the performances that would garner 11 Oscar nominations throughout the decade, not to mention the way that contemporary filmmakers still seek inspiration in his work today. Settle in; it's a good one.Originally Posted on Patreon (2/19/22) here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/62775976Theme Music: Solo Acoustic Guitar by Jason Shaw, Free Music ArchiveLogo: Kate Gabrielle (KateGabrielle.com)
