Send us a textUnearthed: Forgotten Baseball Heroes and Their Unmarked GravesWhen Brendan Schuster discovered that Honus Wagner was buried just 15 minutes from his home, he never imagined this curiosity would evolve into a profound mission to honor forgotten baseball heroes. In this deeply moving episode, we journey with Brendan through Pittsburgh's cemeteries as he uncovers the unmarked graves of Negro League players who shaped America's pastime yet were denied proper recognition even in death.Brendan takes us back to 2006 when a chance encounter with Buck O'Neil—the charismatic Negro League legend—transformed his understanding of baseball history. After meeting Vince Chiarmella during the pandemic and discovering their shared passion for baseball burial sites, the two launched the Josh Gibson Unmarked Grave Project, dedicated to identifying and properly marking the final resting places of Negro League players. The stories Brendan shares are equal parts detective work and historical preservation. From finding Ernest "Pud" Gooden's burial site to connecting with the descendants of Willis Moody, each marker placed represents not just a name etched in stone but a legacy restored. Most touching is how this project has inspired the next generation—seventh-graders at Seneca Valley raised money selling lollipops to fund a grave marker, creating a connection to history they'll carry throughout their lives. While the project has successfully marked 11 players' graves in Allegheny County, with 10 more identified, Brendan reveals the staggering truth that an estimated 3,000 Negro League players lie in unmarked graves across the country. His mission continues to grow, connecting communities to their forgotten heroes one headstone at a time.Discover how you can support this remarkable initiative by visiting jgfmemorialmarkers.org and help ensure that these extraordinary athletes—who played three games a day with subpar equipment while sleeping on suitcases—finally receive the recognition they deserve.Josh Gibson Foundations(Unmarked Grave)http://www.jgfmemorialmarkers.orgTHANK YOU FOR LISTENING!!!!www.holdmycutter.com

Between the 1870s and the late 1990s, over 150,000 First Nations, Métis and Inuit children were forced to attend church-run, government-funded residential schools. As of three years ago, the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation had documented more than 4,100 deaths of children at these institutions. In 2022, Kimberley Murray was appointed Independent Special Interlocutor for Missing Children and Unmarked Graves and Burial Sites associated with Indian Residential Schools. She released her final report, Sites of Truth, Sites of Conscience, last month. We discuss the report with Professor Frank Deer of the Faculty of Education at the University of Manitoba.

In Sydenham Cemetery in Christchurch, up to one thousand patients from Sunnyside Hospital are thought to have their remains in unmarked graves.
IN THIS EPISODE:FICTION: The short horror story “Come and Play” by Pablo DickensNON-FICTION: In May, 2017, another 7,000 unmarked graves were found on the campus of Mississippi Medical Center. But this gruesome discovery is only the beginning of the dark and twisted history of how the bodies got there. (The Land of 10,000 Unmarked Graves) *** Dark Watchers… they are mentioned in a number of ancient legends and are well-known in several US states. But who or what are they, and where do they come from? (Mysterious Dark Watchers) *** There is an ancient, superstitious and almost universal belief that certain people possess the supernatural power to cause disaster, illness, calamity and even death. They have an ability to do it with a gaze or stare – what we've come to know as the evil eye. (The Curse of The Evil Eye) *** Mysterious, loud booming noises have been heard all over the country without explanation. But now it has become even creepier, as some men in black have been poking around asking questions and interviewing witnesses. (Men In Black and Unexplained Booms) *** A convicted murderer and suspected serial killer lurks in the frames of the horror classic, The Exorcist. (The Real Life Killer Who Appeared In The Exorcist) *** A mysterious old man shows up at the scene of two auto accidents – twenty years apart! (My Guardian Angel) *** The older citizens in Durango, Mexico tell of a frightening entity known as the La Ilorona. (La Ilorona) *** A woman tells of seeing a dead relative on her way out to do her weekly grocery shopping. (Doppelganger, Ghost, or Imagination?) *** Drenched in sun and perched above the glistening water of Tampa Bay, the Sunshine Skyway Bridge doesn't look haunted. However, appearances can be deceiving. (Tampa's Haunted Sunshine Skyway Bridge) *** The rapid decline of traffic on Route 66 sounded the death knell for hundreds of businesses – including Diamonds Restaurant. But that hasn't stopped the undead from continuing to frequent the place. (Ghosts of Diamonds Restaurant) *** Die without being married and you could be doomed to haunt the world forever – at least according to an ancient Chinese custom. And thus, “ghost weddings” became a reality. (Ghost Marriage) *** What was intended as a romantic getaway under the stars turned into a frightful getaway from a horrible sound. (Unnatural Sound On Mt. Saint Helens) *** A string of murders in Wineville, California caused the town to change its name – and inspired an Angelina Jolie movie. In the many years I worked for someone else as a reporter, I always had the idea of creating a podcast version of the stories I was writing because I got my start in radio. I love hearing other people's voices and trying to capture events in a sonic fashion. The December 19, 2023 edition of Charlottesville Community Engagement once again focuses on a single meeting in a fashion approaching my vision. I'm Sean Tubbs, still trying to figure out how one listens to something visible. In the second hour of Connections with Evan Dawson on Tuesday, October 17, 2023, we discuss the discovery of unmarked graves in Mt. Hope Cemetery and Highland Park, and how the stigma of mental illness is a long-fought battle.
The work of reckoning with residential schools is being hampered by limited access to records, a lack of support for families and outright denialism, says Kimberley Murray, the independent special interlocutor for unmarked graves at the institutions. She tells Matt Galloway about the obstacles she's encountered helping families track down missing children, and what she needs from all levels of government.
In 2021, Canadians were shocked to learn of the apparent remains of children found buried at a former residential school in B.C – or at least that's what Canadians were told by the legacy media. In response to the news, Canada was accused of committing genocide, churches were burned down, and the country was put in a permanent state of mourning. However, what isn't widely talked about is the fact that no human remains have been found at any of the sites where apparent remains were said to be. Is this the biggest fake news story in Canadian history? Has the legacy media performed a huge disservice to Canadians and Indigenous peoples? On this episode of The Rupa Subramanya Show, Rupa is joined by Karen Restoule to discuss the ‘unmarked graves' narrative and how it has impacted Canada. The unmarked graves of at least four people have been found in Ennis Cathedral. They were discovered during ongoing works at the Cathedral. The graves are located beneath the floor of the main Cathedral and are believed to be the ramains of local priests and bishops from over 100 years ago. To find out more, on Wednesday's Morning Focus Alan Morrissey was joined by Fr Brendan Quinlivan, Communications Officer for the Killaloe Diocese.
A Clare priest believes it was "disrespectful" of the Killaloe Diocese to put flooring over unmarked graves in the Ennis Cathedral. Works being carried out in the Cathedral have yielded the discovery of the remains of at least four people who are believed to have been clergy members buried in the body of the church in the early twentieth century in accordance with tradition. The cathedral's vinyl flooring, which is currently being removed, was first put in place in 1973 despite knowledge at the time that people had been buried on the site. Communications Officer for the Killaloe Diocese Father Brendan Quinlivan says allowing people to walk over the site of human remains is disrespectful by modern standards but may have been viewed differently at the time.

As we approach the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we take you inside the ongoing quest to document the children who died in Canada's Indian Residential Schools system. Vinita speaks to Terri Cardinal, director of Indigenous Initiatives at MacEwan University, about the search she led to uncover the unmarked graves of those who perished at the Blue Quills Residential School in Alberta. It's deeply personal and emotional work for Terri, whose own father is a survivor of the school. Terri talks about what she found, how she felt, and what she hopes will come of it. She says the number of unmarked graves across the country is much higher than many of us could have imagined. And she says it's important to keep shining a light on the rising numbers, especially with so many Canadians in denial about what really happened at these schools.Visit the Conversation Canada's website for more resources.

One of the dangers of legalism is that a person is spiritually dead, but they don't know it, perhaps the church around them doesn't know it, and it wreaks havoc on everyone. Why wouldn't they know it? Because the headstone has been removed (Legalists don't hold to the truth of scripture about the life that is from above). Join us for a sermon from Luke 11:44.
In 2018, a few months into building a new school in Sugar Land, Texas, construction crews uncovered 95 unmarked graves. This wasn't a serial killer's dumping, but it was evidence of a particularly dark period in our country's history - evidence many in Sugar Land wished had stayed hidden. This is the story of these 95 people. Who were they? What happened to them? Argentina surrendered to British forces in Port Stanley on the 14th of June 1982. The Falklands conflict was over. In the months after the fighting ended troops and their equipment shipped out, graves were dug and memorials were put up across the islands for those killed in battle. British military personnel were identified, most buried at sea or repatriated to the UK. But for 237 deceased Argentine soldiers, their hastily buried bodies remained unidentified for decades and their families were left unable to claim their loved ones who'd died fighting in the islands. Their memorials read simply: “Argentine Soldier Known Only By God”Then in 2012, a team embarked on a project to change that. The International Committee of the Red Cross began a mission to collect DNA samples from each of the unknown graves in the hope that they could give the Argentine soldiers back their names and provide answers to relatives.
