An amateur sleuth working to identify hundreds of unmarked Otago graves is welcoming funding to properly recognise "pauper plots". Dunedin Council's announced it's getting almost $200,000 from the government to investigate unmarked graves of people who died in institutional care. There were several so-called lunatic asylums, church and welfare institutions in the region. Laura Furness spoke to Lisa Owen.

Permanent memorials are set to be erected at four unmarked graves in Ennis. The burial plots in the St Brigid's section of Drumcliffe Cemetery are denoted with wooden crosses, but now Irish Natural Stone in Tubber have been tasked with putting memorials in place. It's understood all of the deceased which include three men and one woman were recovered from the sea in the last decade and to date there remains have never been identified despite extensive efforts. Mayor of Ennis Mary Howard says it's an important action to take.

As of three years ago, the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation had documented more than 4,100 deaths of children at these institutions. In 2022, Kimberley Murray was appointed Independent Special Interlocutor for Missing Children and Unmarked Graves and Burial Sites associated with Indian Residential Schools. The work of reckoning with residential schools is being hampered by limited access to records, a lack of support for families and outright denialism, says Kimberley Murray, the independent special interlocutor for unmarked graves at the institutions. She tells Matt Galloway about the obstacles she's encountered helping families track down missing children, and what she needs from all levels of government.

In 2018, a few months into building a new school in Sugar Land, Texas, construction crews uncovered 95 unmarked graves. This wasn't a serial killer's dumping, but it was evidence of a particularly dark period in our country's history - evidence many in Sugar Land wished had stayed hidden.  This is the story of these 95 people. Who were they? What happened to them? It turns out their story is just as much about them as it is about the people who have been trying to control them for over a century. Quillette podcast host Jonathan Kay talks to National Post reporter Terry Glavin about the blockbuster 2021 claim that hundreds of murdered Indigenous children had been found in unmarked graves, the process by which that story began to unravel in the year that followed, and what the whole spectacle tells us about Canada's intellectual class.

Argentina surrendered to British forces in Port Stanley on the 14th of June 1982. The Falklands conflict was over. In the months after the fighting ended troops and their equipment shipped out, graves were dug and memorials were put up across the islands for those killed in battle. British military personnel were identified, most buried at sea or repatriated to the UK. But for 237 deceased Argentine soldiers, their hastily buried bodies remained unidentified for decades and their families were left unable to claim their loved ones who'd died fighting in the islands. Their memorials read simply: “Argentine Soldier Known Only By God”Then in 2012, a team embarked on a project to change that. The International Committee of the Red Cross began a mission to collect DNA samples from each of the unknown graves in the hope that they could give the Argentine soldiers back their names and provide answers to relatives.
