The Bike Index was started in 2013 and allows people to register bicycles for free and report them when they have been stolen. The nonprofit has helped recover more than 14,000 bikes. Most recently, the group has been tracking an elaborate bike-theft pipeline that leads back to Mexico. It estimates from 2020 to 2024, the theft ring has sold an estimated 654 bikes worth more than $1 million. Bryan Hance is a Portlander and co-founder of the group. He joins us to share more about the Bike Index and what it's uncovered about these thefts.

For those who have recently had their bike stolen, well there may be a silver lining - you could be helping someone in need. Gabriel Gati from Bikes Auckland explains the scheme to Jesse .

Cops in England raided a guy's house after hearing he might have some stolen bikes in his backyard. And it turned out he had a pile so big, you could see it in satellite images on Google Maps. It appears to be hundreds of bikes.

Bike theft is an ongoing issue especially in Tāmaki Makaurau and it's an issue that has grown, with the popularity of e-bikes. Now cyclists have an online tool to help track down their stolen bike, in a move that's aimed at dampening the black market.
