Having the support and guidance of educated and passionate real estate professionals can be the difference-maker in finding your own success in the industry. In today's episode of Women Who Lead, our host, Teresa Palacios Smith, is joined by three powerful women in the real estate industry who motivate and empower their team members to find success and accomplish their career goals. Meet the Motivators: Kalani Hooker, Broker Owner, Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices A Action REALTORS® Amye von Seebach, Esq., President, Canopy Title Brenda Wild, Broker Owner, Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Signature Properties How ‘The Motivators' got their start in real estate: Brenda's contractor convinced her to get a real estate license, and she left her sales position to become a realtor. Her goal was to foster and support a healthy work environment to make it a better and more sustainable career for everyone.  Amye's legal work led her to a job involving property law. She called her real estate law professor for help, and they arranged the necessary paperwork to help a client prove she owned the property in question. Amye found a passion for helping people who could not help themselves. Kalani worked in corporate America prior to her real estate experience. Working in information security, she transitioned to real estate to make a difference.  Each ‘Motivator' was inspired to become a broker-owner: Brenda had a gut feeling that she should be a part of a franchise. She jumped in right when the market started to tank, and she knows her success was thanks to her family's support when she needed to persevere.  Growing up in rural Kentucky, Amye went to college in South Carolina, studied Literature, and married way too young. After coming out as a part of the LGBTQ+ community, she married her (now) wife. Amye wanted to show other realtors that there are many agents in their community who are able to support and guide them.  Within Kalani's own family, she has family members who weren't able to achieve homeownership until Kalani was able to help them overcome that barrier. She wanted to continue that work to help others beyond her family accomplish that.  Facing biases and how they overcome them: When Amye was a team lead (for a different company), one of her employees refused to work for her because she was a lesbian. While her CEO supported Amye and fired the employee, that woman still works in the industry, and there are times Amye encounters her. When Kalani recruits people, and they realize she represents a minority-owned brokerage, there is hesitancy. She presents the firm as an inclusive workplace, and she was surprised when a particular man wanted to work in a male-dominated firm.  For Brenda, brokerage ownership in her area is still a boy's club. Blazing a trail for women in leadership is difficult. However, when she helps others, especially women-owned businesses, find and obtain land space is incredibly meaningful. The importance of mentorship: Kalani has many mentors: a religious mentor to help her focus on helping others, business mentors who bring knowledge, wisdom, and experience to the table, and her mother. She believes in giving back and always strives to have people look forward and look back. Brenda spends a great deal of time mentoring newer agents in her brokerage. She looks for younger women who she knows can provide meaningful business and life advice.  Amye's first and most influential mentor was her mother, but within the industry, Amye was mentored by Jim Harris. She also learns a lot from her kids - they catch her on every mistake she makes and keeps her accountable. Their biggest accomplishment: Kalani gives back. From a corporate perspective, BHHS supports Sunshine Kids, which is fantastic. However, there are also many local nonprofits and community needs that we should find a way to help. Brenda doesn't think she's reached her most significant accomplishment yet, but her biggest so far is creating a family, especially her blended family. Amye can't imagine anything more important than her kids. Of course, her other work is important, and she wants to change the industry to be more inclusive and representative of its people. The real estate industry is experiencing a loyalty gap - the phenomenon that 80-90% of people state they would use their realtor again, but only 13% of those people used their previous agent. In today's episode of The Real Estate Sales Podcast, Jimmy is joined by Berkshire Hathaway Homeservices CEO Chris Stuart to understand this issue and explain how to grow your real estate business through influence.   What are some of the challenges facing the real estate market? What you focus on expands. Dedication to lead generation might expand your market of new leads, but that means your existing network doesn't reap those benefits. Everybody knows how to find a realtor, so the loyalty gap is not a representation issue, a service issue, or an affinity issue.   So, why does this loyalty gap exist? In real estate, 90% of all transactions have a real estate representation on both sides. People do not go through the real estate process without a realtor. It all comes down to one thing: influence. How agents do (or don't) influence how customers make their real estate decisions. When someone is making a real estate decision, most people talk to friends, family, neighbors, and coworkers before contacting an agent.  To capitalize on this, the agent should aid initial decision-making to have a seat at the table.   How do you establish influence as a realtor? Demonstrate to your database that you're a trusted advisor in any situation. Are there cracks in the foundation or water supply issues with their new home? You should know how to help them. Create a business where you aren't tethered to a commission check, and quit expecting everything to come with a check - build relationships instead of transactions. Build your network and connections into your database. But don't just leave it at that - add value to their lives.   Read to establish influence: Chris's book Real Estate Influence to learn how to leverage social media and marketing intentionally as an agent. The best part? All the proceeds go to Sunshine Kids, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping children with cancer. There are two fundamental premises to real estate: be in the service of others, and be in the spirit of accountability. When you need help, put aside your ego and ask for it.    Want to get in contact with Chris? Connect with him on LinkedIn to learn more.   Connect with Jimmy Burgess on LinkedIn and Facebook, as well as his YouTube channel.   If you like what you heard today, we'd love it if you'd share a rating or review and then subscribe to the podcast and tell others about it as well. Hanh Tran is the seventh and youngest child of Vietnamese-Chinese immigrants, was raised in Houston and learned early on to teach herself and to others to foster personal growth. She received a degree in biology from the University of Houston.    Hanh Tran's work with oil on canvas is based on self-study of the human form, nature, culture and emotion. Her dedication to learning – and a hands-on approach to sharing the art experience with others – is indicative of Hanh's dedication to creating and providing approachable and emotive art.   Heavy, sweeping, broad strokes of thick oil paint that create a three-dimensional effect are trademarks of Hanh's collections and commissioned works. It is through her connection with art, nature and people that Hanh finds comfort through expression. "Art provides respite and renewal for most people,” said Hanh.“Painting, creating and sharing provide quiet comfort and establish a meaningful sense of community."  Through donations of her original art and art + wellness teaching sessions with patients and families of patients facing health challenges, Hanh serves those in need in local and national charitable communities. Among others, Sunshine Kids, Covenant House of Houston and the North Cypress Medical Center are key community charitable partners of Hanh's.  Hanh's collections are installed commercially and in private residences across Texas, New York, and both the east and west coasts.  In this episode we discuss: How Hanh created her signature style. Discovering the art of networking for success. How to keep art subjective and remain inspired. How she remains challenged after all these years. For more information visit http://cstem.org.
