Silvano Brocca ist vor vierzehn Jahren von Zürich-Seebach nach Australien ausgewandert. Heute lebt und arbeitet der 44-Jährige in der kleinen Stadt Swan Hill, nördlich von Melbourne: «Hier begegnet man wahren Australiern.» Australien ist für viele Schweizerinnen und Schweizer nach wie vor einer der beliebtesten Auswandererdestinationen. Auch Silvano Brocca hat es vor vierzehn Jahren gepackt. Lange lebte der Zürcher mit italienischen Wurzeln in Melbourne. Heute ist Swan Hill sein zu Hause. Die kleine Stadt im Bundesstaat Victoria ist rund vier Stunden von Melbourne entfernt: «Hier geht alles viel gemächlicher zu und her.» Silvano Brocca und seine Verlobte Patricia fühlen sich wohl unter den Einheimischen: «Swan Hill ist klein und fein. Ein bezaubernder Ort mit vielen kleinen Seen und Parks mitten im Outback.» Das Paar besitzt ein schmuckes Haus mit Umschwung. Kängurus, die an der Garage vorbei hüpfen, gehören zum Alltag in Australien. Gips und Salz für die Landwirtschaft Silvano Brocca ist Geschäftsführer einer Firma, die Gips und Salz für die Landwirtschaft abbaut: «Gips ist für den Boden hier ein wichtiger Nährstoff. Das Salz wird dem Futter für die Nutztiere beigemischt oder für die Lederverarbeitung eingesetzt.» Trotz Karriere, macht sich der 44-jährige oft Gedanken, vielleicht doch irgendwann mal in die Schweiz zurückzukehren: «Ich habe in Zürich meine Familie, die ich sehr vermisse.»

Venezuela ist vorwiegend aufgrund seiner hohen Armuts- und Kriminalitätsrate bekannt. Trotzdem sagt Christian Brunnschweiler: Eine Rückkehr in die Schweiz könne er sich nicht vorstellen. Es klingt paradox: Fast 95 Prozent der Menschen in Venezuela leiden unter der Armut. Die Kriminalitätsrate ist hoch, nachts durch Caracas zu laufen, wäre zu gefährlich. Trotzdem sagt Christian Brunnschweiler (70): Er bleibe in Venezuela wegen der Freiheit. «Hier werde ich nicht ständig beobachtet» Christian Brunnschweiler mag seine alte Heimat, die Schweiz. Dennoch würde er sich in der Schweiz zu eingeengt und beobachtet fühlen. Ein Erlebnis bestärkte sein Argument: «Als ich in Bern in einem Supermarkt am Tiefkühlfach eine Schachtel Vermicelles herausnahm und wieder versorgte, sprach mich ein Herr an und fragte: «Chöiter nid läse?» Er fragte zurück: «Doch, warum?» Der Herr gab zur Antwort: «Zerscht wähle, u denn ufmache!» Das habe ihn geschockt. «Das wäre hier in Venezuela undenkbar. Es ist den Venezolaner und Venezolanerinnen egal, wie ich lebe, was ich mache.» Man werde hier nicht überall beobachtet. Von Ciba-Geigy in die Selbstständigkeit Christian Brunnschweiler bleibt deshalb in Venezuela, seit 35 Jahren lebt er hier. Er wuchs in Zürich auf, absolvierte eine Landwirtschaftslehre in Zürich Seebach und studierte anschliessend an der Hochschule für Agrar-, Forst- und Lebensmittelwissenschaften HAFL in Zollikofen. Er arbeitete danach einige Jahre für die Ciba-Geigy in Basel, wurde nach Asien und Afrika entsandt und dann nach Venezuela. Kurz darauf wurde er selbstständig und spezialisierte sich auf Impfstoffe für Tiere. Überfälle, Schüsse ins Knie, beinahe entführt Venezuelas wirtschaftliche Lage bereitete ihm Schwierigkeiten, sagt Christian Brunnschweiler. Aufgrund der internationalen Sanktionen ist es nicht möglich, Banküberweisungen zu tätigen oder Kredite aufzunehmen. Dies erschwert die Bezahlwege und das Handeln, was dazu führt, dass er heute rund 80 Prozent weniger verkauft als noch vor sieben Jahren. Aber auch das tägliche Leben ist wegen der hohen Kriminalitätsrate schwierig: Er wurde schon mehrfach überfallen; die Diebe schossen ihm ins Knie, seine Tochter wurde beinahe entführt. «Ich bin vertropikalisiert» Seine beiden Kinder sind seit einiger Zeit ausgewandert. Sie leben in Deutschland und in Brasilien. Er bleibt in Venezuela bleiben. «Wenn man einmal in den Tropen gelebt hat, will man nicht mehr weg.» Er habe die Lebensart der Venezolaner und Venezolanerinnen angenommen. Die Offenheit, dieser Lebensmut, die Freundlichkeit, auch ein wenig das Chaos, und die Spontanität. Man nennt das auch «tropicalisado», also vertropikalisiert. Das lockere, spontane Leben der Menschen.

Ein historischer Moment - auch für die Schweiz. Denn an Bord der Kapsel sind auch Teile "Made in Switzerland".  Die Firma Beyond Gravity aus Zürich Seebach beispielsweise hat Teile geliefert, damit die Kapsel mit Strom versorgt werden kann. Entsprechend gespannt habe man heute den ersten Startversuch mitverfolgt, erzählt Clemens Gähwiler von Beyond Gravity. Auch Renato Krpoun, Leiter der Abteilung Raumfahrt beim Bund ist gespannt auf die Mission. Denn die Schweiz ist eines von 10 europäischen Ländern, welches an diesem Projekt mitarbeitet. Her goal was to foster and support a healthy work environment to make it a better and more sustainable career for everyone.  Amye's legal work led her to a job involving property law. She called her real estate law professor for help, and they arranged the necessary paperwork to help a client prove she owned the property in question. Amye found a passion for helping people who could not help themselves. Kalani worked in corporate America prior to her real estate experience. Working in information security, she transitioned to real estate to make a difference.  Each ‘Motivator' was inspired to become a broker-owner: Brenda had a gut feeling that she should be a part of a franchise. She jumped in right when the market started to tank, and she knows her success was thanks to her family's support when she needed to persevere.  Growing up in rural Kentucky, Amye went to college in South Carolina, studied Literature, and married way too young. After coming out as a part of the LGBTQ+ community, she married her (now) wife. Amye wanted to show other realtors that there are many agents in their community who are able to support and guide them.  Within Kalani's own family, she has family members who weren't able to achieve homeownership until Kalani was able to help them overcome that barrier. She wanted to continue that work to help others beyond her family accomplish that.  Facing biases and how they overcome them: When Amye was a team lead (for a different company), one of her employees refused to work for her because she was a lesbian. While her CEO supported Amye and fired the employee, that woman still works in the industry, and there are times Amye encounters her. When Kalani recruits people, and they realize she represents a minority-owned brokerage, there is hesitancy. She presents the firm as an inclusive workplace, and she was surprised when a particular man wanted to work in a male-dominated firm.  For Brenda, brokerage ownership in her area is still a boy's club. Blazing a trail for women in leadership is difficult. However, when she helps others, especially women-owned businesses, find and obtain land space is incredibly meaningful. The importance of mentorship: Kalani has many mentors: a religious mentor to help her focus on helping others, business mentors who bring knowledge, wisdom, and experience to the table, and her mother. She believes in giving back and always strives to have people look forward and look back. Brenda spends a great deal of time mentoring newer agents in her brokerage. She looks for younger women who she knows can provide meaningful business and life advice.  Amye's first and most influential mentor was her mother, but within the industry, Amye was mentored by Jim Harris. She also learns a lot from her kids - they catch her on every mistake she makes and keeps her accountable. Their biggest accomplishment: Kalani gives back. From a corporate perspective, BHHS supports Sunshine Kids, which is fantastic. However, there are also many local nonprofits and community needs that we should find a way to help. Brenda doesn't think she's reached her most significant accomplishment yet, but her biggest so far is creating a family, especially her blended family. Amye can't imagine anything more important than her kids. Of course, her other work is important, and she wants to change the industry to be more inclusive and representative of its people. Seebach has spent years working to uncover the complicated and emotional history of Indigenous boarding schools across North America by studying a former institution that is close to home. In the early 1900s, tens of thousands of Native American children were relocated to boarding schools with the intent to assimilate them, and therefore future generations, into western culture. The Teller Institute in Grand Junction was one of these boarding schools. Through his research and time spent in Washington D.C. looking through national archives, Seebach discovered death notices and archival newspaper clippings showing 21 children who died while attending the Teller Institute although there may be many more undocumented deaths.
