Cultivate Catskill is an all volunteer group dedicated to the beautification of their village. It all started over a dozen years ago when Shelly Pulver, who has lived in Catskill for 55 years and President of the organization, saw an email about hanging baskets. She thought that installing them along Main Street was something that could be done. Over a dozen years later, the village, with a population just under 4000, has over 90 hanging baskets along both Main Street and Bridge Street to the delight of the local residents.. Joining Shelly in this endeavor is her long-time friend, Robin Smith, who is a native Catskillian, Treasurer of the organization, and has been a Master Gardener Volunteer for over 20 years. The two of them along with another dozen volunteers get together every year to help plant pride in their community. In addition to the hanging baskets, they install brightly colored annuals in numerous urns and other containers, care for multiple pocket parks adding seasonal flowers, and  make the downtown shopping district attractive and inviting for visitors and residents alike. The local Tree Council, spearheaded by Hudson Talbott and now part of Cultivate Catskill, has planted over 76 trees in the village along Main Street and more recently in the cemetery. They even worked with the Village Board to create a Tree ordinance to protect and maintain the local trees. Their combined efforts have contributed to a kind of renaissance of the downtown area. To get started they worked with a national organization, America in Bloom, which helped to prioritize their efforts and provided a framework that helps revitalize other municipalities. With their guidance and a lot of hard work, the Bank of Greene County and the Department of Public Works have become great supportive partners in this initiative. To fund their efforts, they have sold memorial bricks, held cookie sales, applied for grants, hosted a Holiday House tour, and still hold monthly Trunk Sales (on the 2nd Saturday of the month between May and October). They decorate for all seasons including funding Holiday snowflake lights (complete with swags that cross the street). Working with local merchants, they organized 'Caturday' and Winter Solstice Strolls events, became an official non-profit 501(c)(3) organization and have gradually expanded their focus beyond Main Street. Uncle Sam's Bridge becomes a feature during the summer months adorned with window-boxes overflowing with multi-colored flowers. The Howard Street and Mott Street slides (alleyways) get attention, as do the Blue Star Park, Policeman's Park, Leggio Park, and now Dutchman's Landing. Recently, working with the local Fortnightly Club, they built a Sprayground (a.k.a. a spray playground) at Elliott Park for children and adults to enjoy during the summer months. Volunteers are always welcome especially to weed and water. Listen in to learn more and potentially apply this approach to your community. Heather Courville, a local entrepreneur who offers beautiful handcrafted children's clothing and accessories through her business, Banannie Bands, joins Discover Lafayette to share her journey in breaking into the business world as a seamstress who produces heirloom items. Heather had a booth at the Junior league's Christmas show, Tinsel & Treasures, in September, 2023. The quality of her work, the beauty of her designs, and her endearing spirit made her the perfect guest as we enter the holiday season and people are looking for that perfect gift for a young family member. Where did her career journey begin? A very young, divorced mom who was short on funds but rich in time, Heather took sewing classes and began sewing gifts such as burp cloths, bibs and other baby items for her daughter and friends. Her hobby turned into a career upon the encouragement of Heathe, her then boyfriend and now husband, who announced one day that he had booked her at a craft show in Breaux Bridge. He said, "I have had bought you a 10' x 10' tent and 6 ' table, here's the date of your craft show, and you will have to fill the table with baby items." She filled the table with headbands and burp cloths, all priced at $5.00, and the items sold out fast. Heather made a grand total of $75 at her first show. But this young mother of a ten-month old, who was three months behind on her mortgage and about to lose her house, felt her entrepreneurial spirit lit on fire. She began booking craft shows anywhere possible every weekend....Baptist church parking lots, anywhere there was a show. Low on funds, she would buy scraps of material from Lola Pink Fabrics in Lafayette and would sew items that customers requested such as pacifier clips. She caught up on her mortgage and realized she could take care of herself and daughter. The business has grown exponentially since its early days. And her business paid for her wedding to Heathe! And as they say, the rest is history! Surviving the COVID shutdown was a challenge and Heather pivoted to making masks which sold at retail in Drug Emporium stores. She believes that God provided for her and her business and they both have survived. While she is not yet back to her all time high of eight employees, Heather does enjoy the help of other women who love sewing and she calls Banannie Bands a family business. Heather mentioned a former babysitter of hers.....Ms. Debbie, who makes up to 400 bibs at a time for Banannie Bands. Her mother-in-law also sews for her. Gerber baby diapers serve as the base for Banannie Band burp cloths. Heather has never wanted a 'brick and mortar' store because it would be too difficult to produce enough inventory to keep the store stocked. Heather always wants to focus on custom orders that meet the needs of her customers. She brought a custom order she would be delivering after our show finished to show me a sample of her work. Banannie Bands doesn't sell on Amazon, but you can find creations locally at Trove & Company at 126 E. Bridge Street in Breaux Bridge, Louisiana. Annie Bannanie is the nickname of her oldest daughter, who is now 12 years, and the inspiration for her business name. Capri is her youngest daughter, four years old, and Heather still makes all of her clothes. Banannie Bands makes clothes for newborn children to 5 years of age. Heather is especially proud of her reversible rompers which give the choice of a Halloween outfit and then flipping it inside out to show a Christmas theme. Heather details how in the early days, she worked as a receptionist at a walk-in clinic while she was building her business as a side gig. She then worked for a beloved woman who was a dementia patient but never sewed while on the job....she always waited until her off hours to produce Banannie Bands' crafted outfits and items. But when her patient had to move on to Assisted Living, Heather finally took the jump to supporting herself ...

Hundreds of people in Nelson have had an anxious night waiting to find out if their homes have been flooded. The city is under state of emergency after the Maitai River burst its banks yesterday afternoon and poured down streets. More than 230 homes near the river were evacuated. A heavy rain warning remains in place until 11 o'clock on Thursday. One resident who's lived in the city for 30 years spent the afternoon bailing out her backyard and says it is the worst flooding she has seen. Soldiers patrolled the cordoned streets overnight and all residents are being asked to stay home if possible. Cordons are in place at Tasman and Nile Streets where houses have been evacuated while Rocks Rd and Cleveland Terrace are closed due to slips. Nelson Mayor Rachel Reese told First Up more homes needed to be evacuated overnight. Reporter Kirsty Frame spoke to Corin Dann from Bridge Street overlooking the Maitai river.

Bridgeview agreement, new contracts for director

* The Redevelopment Agency authorized a pre-development agreement with Tesla Redevelopment, which is pursuing the concept for the 300-unit Bridgeview project across the river from downtown. The concept calls for the development of the entire block around Clarkson Place, Essex, Monroe and Bridge Street -- which includes a PSE&G substation at the corner of Monroe Street and Clarkson Place. The pre-development agreement allows the agency to be involved in property acquisition, according to Redevelopment Director Robert Landolfi. The agency likely will be involved in the acquisition of at least one foreclosed property and it's easier for the agency to deal with PSE&G than a private developer, Landolfi said. While the agency can't condemn the property, he said it can help identify another property for the utility. The five-story Bridgeview concept would be about 300 units across two buildings -- one with 140 units and another with 160 units -- on the entire block. The original concept plan had developers acquiring five parcels of about 1.8 acres. The newer plan includes 11 properties that total about 3.25 acres. There have been instances in Rahway where original concepts didn't make it through the final version partly because of property acquisition. Listen to the podcast for more on that. * The Redevelopment Agency and City Council renewed contracts at their January meetings with the redevelopment director and city administrator. Robert Landolfi serves in both roles, technically he's not an employee but rather an independent contractor, through Landolfi & Associations Government Solutions Corporation. Both contracts are for $65,000, a combined $130,000, and run through 2021. Looking ahead: There are no scheduled municipal meetings this week: City Council will next meet Feb. 8. The Redevelopment Agency's next meeting is scheduled for Feb. 17. But something is coming this week: Look out for a new reader poll out early this week. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/rahwayrising/message
