Winner of the 2023 SXSW Audience Award for Best Documentary Feature Dan Covert's GEOFF MCFETRIDGE: DRAWING A LIFE focuses on one of the most prolific artists of his time, Geoff McFetridge, an artist who has undoubtedly influenced the way the world looks. His art is everywhere—on your Apple watch, in countless galleries around the world, in title designs for films by Sofia Coppola and Spike Jonze, and in collaborations with Nike, Hermès, Warby Parker, and more. The antithesis of the archetypal artist fueled by drugs, alcohol, and chaos, what sets the prodigious McFetridge apart is his obsessive quest to balance family with a creative life. In GEOFF MCFETRIDGE: DRAWING A LIFE, director and fellow artist Dan Covert offers unprecedented access into Geoff's multifaceted world, painting an intimate portrait of a man guided by intention and authenticity. Director and Producer Dan Covert joins us for a conversation on what initially drew him to McFetridge's work, how working with Executive Producer Spike Jonze impacted the final cut, getting to know McFetridge beyond his art, and his own background as an artist and graphic designer. This week, we discuss some of our favorite music documentaries, and celebrate one of the latest additions to the canon of great "rock docs"- Louder Than You Think: A Lo-Fi History of Gary Young & Pavement. Joining us for this discussion of Citizen Kane-esque proportions is Louder Than You Think's Director, Jed. I Rosenberg and Co-Producer Brian Thalken. Louder Than You Think, a 2023 SXSW Audience Award winner, is an up-close cinematic walkabout through the life of Gary Young (May 3, 1953 - August 17, 2023), the original (and highly unlikely) drummer of indie rock royalty Pavement. His booze and drugs-fueled antics (on-stage handstands, gifting vegetables to fans) and haphazard production methods (accidentally helping launch the lo-fi aesthetic) were both a driving force of the band's early rise and the cause of his eventual crash landing. Leaving a wake of joy and/or destruction at every turn, Gary teeters the thin line between free-form self-expression and chaotic self-destruction. With its inventive use of marionette sequences and featuring revelatory archival footage, Louder Than You Think is equal parts hilarious, heartbreaking and human. Learn more about your ad choices. According to UCLA's Williams Institute, there are over 8 million LGBTQIA+ employees living in the United States. Tragically, nearly half of these employees have endured unfair treatment on the job at some point in their careers, with 57% of this unfair treatment motivated by religious beliefs. These experiences of discrimination are amplified for LGBTQIA+ people who are BIPOC, transgender, and those who live at these intersections.   Given these harsh realities, it's no surprise 50% of LGBTQIA+ employees are not out to their current supervisor, and 26% are not out to anyone on the job. Covering the things that are most precious to who we are compromises our sense of safety and erodes interpersonal trust at work. Exacerbating these barriers, is a renewed anti-LGBTQIA+ legislative campaign attempting to erode the limited rights secured over the past few decades, most acutely targeting transgender and gender expansive people.   If you are committed to advancing your organization's diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) commitments and want to do more for you LGBTQIA+ colleagues during these chilling times, the conversation you're about to hear was created for you. During this conversation, Fiona Dawson provides an opportunity to build more solidarity within & beyond LGBTQIA+ communities, including workplace employee resource groups (ERGs).   Fiona is an Emmy®-nominated and award-winning filmmaker. She's a proud bisexual, cisgender, immigrant woman from the LGBTQIA+ community, and she is the founder and director of Free Lion Productions, where she and her team create content to make diversity, equity, and inclusion programs work. She has received many notable awards including President Obama's LGBT Artist Champion of Change for her Emmy®-nominated short, Transgender, at War and in Love, and the 2018 SXSW Audience Award for her documentary, TransMilitary.   Together, our conversation supports DEIB professionals, along with other inclusive leaders, build stronger and psychologically safer teams across differences. Listeners like you will gain a deeper appreciation of the many dynamic cultures that exist within LGBTQIA+ communities, including workplace employee resource groups (ERGs). Topics explored include:   -Fiona's bestselling book, Are Bisexuals Just Greedy? Animated Answers for All People Who Simply Want to Understand the Spectrum of Being LGBTQ+ -Learning how to engage the silent majority within the LGBTQIA+ community -Recognizing the power of LGBTQIA+ solidarity within ERGs and what gets in the way -Fiona's vision for the future of work   Savor this insightful talk, and if you're looking for more ways to connect with inspiring leaders like Fiona, be sure to join the Belonging Membership Community – a community of leaders committed to advancing their DEIB goals while practicing community care. US Air Force JAG Attorney Yvonne Bradley volunteered to defend a man named Binyam Mohamed who was facing a death penalty case at Guantanamo Bay in 2005. Believing the detainees at Guantanamo were ‘the worst of the worst' in the war on terror, Yvonne's world was turned upside down as she arrived in Cuba and began to untangle an unimaginable case. Spending the next 4 years battling to uncover the truth, Yvonne's is a captivating story of taking responsibility in the face of corruption at the highest levels of power, and the dangers of choosing to stand up for what you believe in. What's the difference between a terrorist sympathizer and a hero? Would you risk it all to do the right thing? WE ARE NOT GHOULS is a feature-length documentary which premiered at the SXSW 2022 Film Festival and won the SXSW Audience Award for the Documentary Spotlight section. In this episode, Dawn talks with filmmaker Chris Thompson and the subject of the film, Yvonne Bradley. The film documents one man's dream of capturing Foo Fighters attention The documentary We Are The Thousand captures the miraculous story of how Foo Fighters fandom turned into the biggest rock band in the world. The film takes fans backstage with Rockin' 1000 where a thousand musicians gathered in Cesena, Italy in July 2015 to perform "Learn To Fly" in hopes of convincing the Foo Fighters to perform in their small Italian town. Written and directed by Anita Rivaroli, the Italian-language film (with English subtitles) made its premiere at SXSW Film Festival 2021, a year later than expected. It was originally scheduled for last year's festival, which was ultimately canceled due the ongoing global crisis. We Are The Thousand was named the SXSW Audience Award winner for 2020 Spotlight Section. Rivaroli chats with Buddy Iahn via her home in Rome, Italy, where she's been on lockdown since the pandemic began last spring. We get a little more insight into the making of the film and how Fabio Zaffagnini's idea brought the Foo Fighters to perform a three hour private concert for the band and crew in Cesena.
