What started with a request for a single pound cake has exploded into a thriving business with her signature cakes and pies available throughout Tallahassee and shipped around the country. Whether driving her 3-week-old daughter to Houston at age 17 or quitting her job with the state to bake full-time, Jennifer has consistently proven her doubters wrong with the mantra “faith over fear.” Today, the wife, mother and entrepreneur loves bringing joy to others, traveling and the occasional Polar Pop!

Episode #48: Illness from Human Immunodeficiency Virus commonly called HIV and AIDS, has largely been overshadowed and forgotten despite the fact that over 1.1 million Americans are living with the disease. Episode #47: To honor Mental Health Awareness Month, we turn our attention to bipolar disorder, a serious mental health condition that causes extreme mood swings. If not treated and managed, bipolar disorder can be dangerous and cause great disruption in a person's life. Most mental health disorders have peak onset during young adulthood. So, while beginning college and meeting the new stressors that accompany this transition, many young adults will experience the first onset of problems or an exacerbation of pre-existing symptoms. Students diagnosed with bipolar disorder are 70% more likely to drop out of college than students with no psychiatric diagnosis. Many of these students are going undiagnosed and are not getting the treatment and the support services they need to succeed in college. However, students with bipolar disorder can implement effective treatments, practice management strategies, and seek support in order make progress in their college education. For this conversation, we're joined by Allyson Makuch, who recently navigated bipolar disorder throughout her college and graduate school years. We're also joined by a University of California, Santa Cruz Director of Psychiatry, Dr. David Lo, to inform us about bipolar disorder and ways to manage it while in college. Episode #46: An inside look at traumatic brain injury, or “TBI,” and how these injuries influence mental health. People of all ages get them in a variety of ways—from sports injuries, to car accidents, to domestic falls and many of these individuals develop mental health symptoms that can last for months or even years. This show was recorded in Santa Cruz, California, one of the surfing capitals of the country and while mild traumatic brain injuries such as concussions are common in many sports, head injuries are the most common injury among surfers, comprising one-fourth of the total. Children and youths are particularly susceptible and those who sustain even a mild brain injury (often referred to as a concussion), have a 40% increased risk of developing mental health symptoms. Because these issues can appear many months after the injury, doctors and care providers need to pay particular attention to the mental state of patients long after a traumatic brain injury of any severity. Our guest and author JoAnne Jones talks about her recovery from a severe traumatic brain injury that occurred when she was assaulted and robbed. Also with us is rehabilitation and physical medicine specialist Dr. Jennifer Yu who shares information about the mental health symptoms, treatment approaches, and recovery strategies associated with mild to severe traumatic brain injuries. Episode #42: May is Mental Health Awareness Month. In honor of this we explore the question “What is Your Soul Food?“ This episode is about self-care and the many ways we can attend to ourselves to support our mental health. But it is also about so much more than that! These “soul food” activities and practices also help us work through both large and small traumas and helps us feel more resilient when facing the challenges of life. When we find ways to feed our own soul, we find ourselves more internally resourced and, therefore, more available to be kind, feel compassion and lend support to others. In this show, we hear from some community members about the soul foods that nourish them. Host psychotherapist Debra Sloss and psychotherapist and grief and trauma specialist Kara Bowman discuss how soul foods support mental and physical health. We received such an array of different approaches from our listeners, that we made this this into a two-part series. Join us again next month for “Building Resilience: What's Your Soul Food? – Part 2” to hear more! We hope these two episodes help you relish your own soul food buffet! Broadcast: 5/1/22 Special thanks to Jeanne Baldzikowski for audio production, Jennifer Young for research and outreach, Leslie Nielsen for outreach and Izzy Weisz for marketing. And thanks to acoustic guitarist Adrian Legg for composing, performing, and donating the use of our theme music. Episode #41: In this episode we'll explore the complicated and often misunderstood topic of Codependency vs. Interdependency. In codependent relationships, one person does much of the giving and at the same time tries to get their own needs met by controlling the other person. While some people will recreate these same codependent patterns in many of their relationships, others may find that they have just one difficult relationship, in which establishing and maintaining healthy boundaries is challenging. This situation often arises when we have a loved one with mental health problems, substance abuse problems, or their own unskillful ways of relating that pulls us into an anxious and imbalanced pattern of relating. Joining us for this conversation are Co-Dependents Anonymous (CoDA) member Jill and psychotherapist and recovery specialist Kat Zwick, LMFT. This conversation is not just for those who view themselves as having codependent tendencies, but for anyone who struggles with knowing what is and is not in their control. Most of us will likely encounter this challenge at some point, with some person—a child, an aging parent, a troubled friend or an intimate partner! If you are a parent, caregiver, or spouse to this person …. the odds are greater that you will wrestle with where to draw appropriate lines about who Is responsible for what. Join us as we talk about how to find greater personal well-being, even in those more challenging relationships. Broadcast: 4/3/22 Special thanks to Jeanne Baldzikowski for audio production, to Jennifer Young for research and outreach, and to Izzy Weisz for marketing. However, a good fitness program doesn't start in the weight room, or on any piece of cardio equipment. It starts with simple core exercises and stretches with no equipment needed that will put the “feel good” back into your fitness program. Whether your goal is to add muscle, lose weight, or get rid of your back pain, the foundation is the same. My mission is to help people achieve their fitness goals without having to "work" so hard. "No pain no gain" is DEAD!! You want your health and fitness to fit into your life, not the other way around. You can get fit WITHOUT being sore for five days. You can lose weight without starving yourself. You don't need equipment, and you don't need a gym If you're ready... for a different type of fitness program, one that honors who you are and what you're capable of, then join us. PARENTS AS RARE - EPISODE 046 Family Coping, Communication, & Mental Health Resources - Dr. Jennifer Young, Postdoctoral Scholar, Biomedical Ethics - Stanford University Dr. Jennifer Young is a trained marriage and family therapist who has focused her research on families with rare genetic conditions. Her goal is to improve family coping, communication, and access to mental health resources for the rare disease community, especially for the under-served. EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS Can you introduce yourself? I'm a marriage and family therapist by training and I have a PhD in family science, the study of family relationships. Most of my work has been around families with rare genetic conditions. I've been working closely with the undiagnosed diseases network at Stanford and doing in-depth interviews with families. My goal is to build awareness about the challenges for individuals and families in their relationships and to build awareness for mental health providers so they can meet their unique needs. How does your work impact your mental health? One of the first lessons I learned is how to be present for clients, but to put that outcome in a box and move on. It's not always easy. Having a supervisor and solid group of colleagues to debrief and get feedback is helpful. How does someone find resources if they need support? A primary care provider will likely know someone they can refer. Insurance companies will also have covered providers available online or by calling. Psychology Today has has a therapist locator tool to perform a detailed search and refine results. What's most important is feeling connected to your therapist, so ask for a referral to another therapist if you need to. For families going through genetic testing for various health conditions, how do you help people cope with a VUS outcome or lack of answers? It's important to focus on what someone has control over, like managing symptoms and ensuring they're getting quality care for symptoms that can be managed. A lot of times, the benefit of whole genome sequencing or whole exome sequencing is more psychological or social, not clinical. What advice do you have for parents going through diagnosis themselves? The fear and emotion of parents often contributes to the weight of conversations with children. Kids are very resilient, but it's important to manage emotions so children don't feel the need to regulate a parent's emotions. Be in-touch with yourself and ensure you have the resources you need so you can have an open line of communication with your children.
