On September 19, 1997, the world said goodbye to one of the most prolific and, sometimes controversial, Christian artists of his day, Rich Mullins. Mullins' soared to CCM stardom with hits like "Awesome God" and "Sometimes by Step", but his deep convictions and poetic mind prevented him from relishing in his fame. Like Keith Green before him, he walked to the beat of his own drum and did the music he wanted. Tragically, his life was cut short in an automobile accident. In this episode, we talk to four CCM artists who knew Rich, and they give us some insight in to the man Rich was behind the scenes, as well as tell some interesting tales of their encounters with him. Join us for this very special episode of Jesus Freaks: Vinyl to Digital, as we pay tribute to Rich Mullins and feature some of the music he brought us.Special Thanks to Russ, Lee, Mark Gersmehl, Lary Dean and Randy Stonehill for their contributions to this episode.Music in this episode:"Here in America" - Rich Mullins & a Ragamuffin Band (Reunion)"Awesome God" - Rich Mullins (Reunion)"That Where I Am, There You..." - Rich Mullins & a Ragamuffin Band (Myrrh)"Hold Me Jesus" - Rich Mullins & a Ragamuffin Band (Reunion)"Let Mercy Lead" - Rich Mullins (Reunion)"Alrightokuhhuhamen" - Rich Mullins (Reunion)"Brother's Keeper" - Rich Mullins (Reunion)"Peace (A Communion Song from St. Joseph's Square)" - Rich Mullins & a Ragamuffin Band (Reunion)"Sometimes by Step" - Rich Mullins (Reunion)"Elijah" - Rich Mullins (Reunion)This podcast is licensed through BMI. Russ Lee wasn't raised in a Christian home. In fact, by the time he was 17, he was already dealing drugs. But he knew there was something more and he was missing out. One night, with his drugs still in the trunk of his car, he attended a church service that changed his life. That began a path that would take him to fronting one of the most iconic CCM groups, Newsong, as well as embarking on his own solo career. This week, we talk to Russ about his life, faith and the choices he made along the way, which included leaving Newsong, and then coming back years later.Music in This episode:"People Get Ready" - Newsong (Provident Label Group)"Miracles" - Newsong (Provident Label Group)"Smile" - Russ Lee (Sparrow)"Arise My Love" - Newsong (Provident Label Group)"I Am a Christian" - Newsong (HHM Records)"Suddenly" - Russ Lee (Mansion Entertainment)"Live What I Believe" - Russ Lee (Sparrow)This podcast is licensed through BMI. Today’s podcast episode is a new kind of episode. It’s actually a podcast episode that I’m republishing from my friends' podcast - Catching Z’s: The Millennials Guide to Mindfulness. The guest in this episode is me, Tanur Badgley. In my first ever guest appearance on a podcast my friend, mentor, and podcasting accountability partner Nick Zolfo and I really broke down my 10-day Vipassana meditation course the day after I completed my course in Thailand. For those of you that don’t know, Vipassana is a technique developed by Gotama the Buddha 2500 years ago. The word Vipassana means seeing things as they really are. Vipassana is about removing the root of your impurities through self observation and mastery of the mind with the goal of happiness and liberation from suffering. I decided to ask for permission to publish our episode directly into People of Purpose. Not because of this feat that I genuinely am proud to have accomplished, but because I hope it nudges you to do a course yourself. I think one mark of my success after leaving the course is if I can do my part to get the people I love and respect and wish the best to do a ten day course of their own! ------------Reccommended Resources:-------------- My Teacher S.N. Bryan Falchuk overcame adversity, lost nearly 100 pounds, ran a marathon, dramatically changed his diet and created an approach to help others live a better life, every day. That way is Do a Day. And he struggled, like anyone else. Through his struggle, he learned the secret to not just overcoming any individual challenge, but creating a life of achievement, happiness and harmony. In Do a Day, you will learn how to make each day contribute to your goals so you can live the life you want to live - a better life. Joe Sessel found his purpose serving an 11 year term in Federal Prison. From age 19 to 30. In prison Joe found a love for books, sought out mentors, developed his physical fitness and refined his focus to add value to the world. For Joe prison became a limitless library and training ground to become his best self. Today he uses the skills, knowledge, and wisdom acquired from his prison days to be a serial social entrepreneur, a supply chain professional, and real estate investor in Topeka, Kansas. Raised by a single Jewish mom in Topeka, Kansas, Joe was a bright but troubled and rebellious child. He was first convicted of criminal activity at age 10 when he joined older kids breaking into a Catholic school. Failure to play by the rules and obey the law was a pattern for Joe in adolescence. His behavior earned him multiple stays in short term mental hospitals, diagnoses of everything from Acute Paranoid Schizophrenia to Manic-Depressive to Anti-Social Disorder. He was committed in 1995 for an indefinite period at Saint Francis in Salina, Kansas and spent 9 months in a mental ward in the middle of nowhere. Joe began selling drugs his freshman year in high school, and by the time he was 19 years old he was selling about $1 Million dollars of meth a month in Northeast Kansas. During this period, Joe was also a public speaker for the Shawnee County Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program and a choir singer and soloist in many choirs, including a performance of Gustav Mahler’s 8th symphony with the Kansas City Symphony Choir and Washburn University Choir. On May 7th, 1999, 3 days after his 19th birthday, Joe was arrested for possessing $172,000 of meth in a federal investigation called “Operation Heartland”. During the 11 years he spent behind bars, he was able to focus on himself and find purpose. Using his brain and his skills for good became a focus of his life after asking the question “who am I and what kind of person do I want to be?” He was 21 years old the first time he considered these questions seriously. An autodidact with an abundance of time, Joe pursued studies in Philosophy, Literature, Language, Communication and Intelligence theory, Law and Medical Science, Business, Real Estate Investing, and Neuro Linguistic Programming. Today, Joe is on the path of searching for meaning among his fellow humans. He wants to create more value in the world than he consumes, and that is a basis for his actions. His frame is one of lifelong learning. He believes that things aren’t good or bad, but instead that all events are opportunities for learning. “What is the lesson?” is always the question. Joe is dedicated to using his communication skills as a conduit for sharing what he has learned on his journey and helping people to see more and better choices in life. He believes that he has more in life than he could have ever hoped for and hopes that his gratitude and enthusiasm for life are contagious. Listen as we talk about: Why discomfort is the beginning of change Why the safe path leads to stagnation His unique perspective on the relationship between a person’s resources and their ambition Why time is such an underrated and valuable resource How to think about balancing patience with urgency and ambition Why the whole world is a prison and how to find out whats available within your boundaries How stoicism and the serenity prayer give you the power to understand what you have the power to change How to become a free man in prison by recognizing available options How leadership helps you to make up your own mind How reevaluating your premises allows you to understand something you didn’t know Why utility value is more important than truth Why being restricted in prison helped him to seize increasingly greater opportunities Why he doesn’t believe in altruism How to use your talents to create more value than you take Why you can know who Joe is through his favorite games - chess and poker How his purpose has made him a very successful real-estate entrepreneur How to maximize the opportunity to learn from somebody with talent How reframing and reexamine helps you recognize your gratitude ------------Resources Mentioned:-------------- Dune - Frank Herbert I am That - Osho Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion - Robert Cialdini The Game: Penetrating the Secret Society of Pickup Artists - Neil Strauss Count of Monte Cristo - Alexandre Dumas Brothers Karamazov - Fyodor Dostyvskey Epictetus Mr. Money Mustache Join our purpose seeking podcast community at... https://www.facebook.com/peopleofpurposepodcast/ https://www.instagram.com/peopleofpurposepodcast/ https://www.facebook.com/groups/370599930049519/?source_id=146822282503735 https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCdBygSu2TxVoHXaVPgkQcsg To Contribute your Patronage to the Podcast please visit: https://www.patreon.com/PeopleofPurpose
Adam and Sam are 25-year-old freegans. They eat food going to waste and buy vegan only when necessary. They haven’t bought groceries since November 5th, 2016. They describe themselves as thoughtful and mindful. They try to focus on what’s important and cut out things that don’t matter in every aspect of their lives. They accomplish their purpose by repurposing food and objects going to waste to mindfully appreciate what they have and fight a culture of rampant overconsumption. Adam and Sam see consumerism, mindlessness and waste are interconnected. Roughly 40% of food goes to waste, thrift stores are packed with perfectly good clothes, and usable furniture gets thrown out every day. With climate change already impacting everyone, Adam and Sam see buying new products as destructive. Adam and Sam don’t buy things for the sake of having variety but rather out of necessity. As a result, they are appreciative and grateful for what they already have. Listen as we talk about: How their partnership has been necessary to a year without groceries How taking new routes home from work leads to treasures and makes life much more interesting Valuable tips on how to live frugally How they've created lives of congruency with their purpose Stories of how they find and prepare their food How their mission has spilled over to their friends and family Why repurposing is a resource to help you live a better life Privilege they acknowledged in their choice to live the freegan life Why it's important to really examine if you need something. Joe Hishmeh is the Lead Pastor at Fellowship Bible Church in Topeka, Kansas. His purpose is to make God greater on Earth as he is in Heaven. Born in Wisconsin and raised by a carpet-selling family with ancestral roots in Israel, Joe wanted to spend his early twenties truly investigating if Christianity was true. As an inquisitive learner and a natural leader Joe eventually made his way to Seminary school in Dallas, Texas where he met his wife Cheryl. After moving to Chattanooga, Tennessee shortly afterwards Joe was looking to pastor a church with the intent of being a part of a major spiritual awakening in an American city. He came into a small church of 100 people that has now grown to over 2600 each weekend. But as Joe says, the church has grown smaller as it has grown larger. Fellowship Bible Church claims no denomination, instead focusing on shouting the shouts of scripture. Joe has traveled the world extensively in his studies of God, religion, spirituality, and a relationship with Jesus Christ. Joe is also the father of three children with his wife Cheryl. Listen as Joe and I talk about: His journey into Christianity His role as a pastor How he rationalizes faith with logic Routines and habits to feel closer to God Highlights along his journey of purpose Challenging topics such as abortion, suffering, lack of a denomination Criteria he uses for voting Being a minority of faith enmeshed with others What the return of Christ will be like What heaven is like Contact Joe - http://www.fbctopeka.com/about-us/our-team/ Contribute to the Podcast - https://www.patreon.com/user?u=8964963 ------------Resources Mentioned:-------------- Timothy Keller - The Reason for God Join our purpose seeking podcast community at... https://www.facebook.com/peopleofpurposepodcast/ https://www.instagram.com/peopleofpurposepodcast/ https://www.facebook.com/groups/370599930049519/?source_id=146822282503735 To Contribute to the Podcast please visit: https://www.patreon.com/PeopleofPurpose
