As part of my research for EcoResillience Initiative (an EA organization searching for the best ways to preserve biodiversity into the long-term future), I've investigated several common claims that various resource limitations could be disastrous for civilization – ie, that we're approaching “peak oil”, or imminently running out of phosphorus, soil nitrogen, chromium, etc. For the most part, I've found these claims to be overblown, often thanks to systematic exaggeration caused by the poor epistemic environment of activist environmentalism. In general, Paul-Erlich-style resource limitations do not seem pressing compared to other risks to civilization. However, there's one key resource that I've become increasingly concerned about: human civilization might be running out of low-hanging fruit.This kid can't reach the fruit because he's just a baby.  But soon, this kid's problem could be the WHOLE WORLD's problem. Elections attorney Mark Brewer and retired political action executive Bob LaBrant take a look at ongoing headlines surrounding Michigan's independent redistricting commission. After 13 legislative districts were ruled as racially gerrymandered, does the commission need to tidy up its operations? Also, can the districts be redrawn without impacting others?     William Lawrence, coordinator of the 'Rent is Too Damn High' coalition in Michigan, calls for the state to address both tenant rights and housing supply needs at the same time.  Additionally, Policy Director Jennifer Peacock of the Michigan Center for Youth Justice explains how for most of 2024, local governments will be preparing for multiple changes to the state's juvenile justice system, which she says aims to prevent an "over reliance on detention" following youths' offenses.

Boris the Boss. In spite of all common sense, a small number of Conservative Party members in the U.K. have elected Boris Johnson as their leader, and the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Johnson, a rabid pro-Brexiter, will now face the same conundrum as his predecessor Theresa May in trying secure a Brexit deal everyone can get behind, while still being willing to Brexit with no deal and thus tanking the U.K. economy in the process. So why Boris, and can he succeed where others have failed on Brexit? The Rent Really is Too Damn High! A report last week indicated that Canada's got some pretty big issues with housing, and if you feel like you can't afford the rent anymore, you're probably right. In very few areas of this country, and certainly not in Toronto and Vancouver, are you able to afford the rent on even a one-bedroom apartment while earning minimum wage. It's just further proof that the gulf between the rich and poor is widening more and more, so is there anything that can be done through government policy?
