With Donald Trump's sweeping tariffs going into effect on Saturday, world leaders are grappling with how to respond to the chaos hitting markets across the globe. German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock joined Christiane from NATO headquarters in Brussels to discuss how Europe plans to retaliate. Then, as Hungary withdraws from the International Criminal Court this week and Viktor Orban welcomes Benjamin Netanyahu, who's under an ICC arrest warrant for alleged war crimes in Gaza, Christiane asks former U.S. ambassador David Pressman, who served there until this year, whether Trump's America is following Hungary's autocratic playbook. Also, after far-right politician Marine Le Pen was found guilty of embezzlement, Melissa Bell reports from Paris on what it means for France and the future of the National Rally party in the 2027 elections. Christiane also speaks with two aid workers who've seen the horrors in Gaza up close; American physician Tanya Haj-Hassan just left Gaza after spending almost 6 weeks there, and Arwa Damon, a former CNN journalist turned charity founder is desperately trying to get back in. From Christiane's archives, the search for Pope John Paul II's successor, twenty years after his death. Learn more about your ad choices.

Abroad, alone, and locked away on trumped up charges, it's the stuff of nightmares. Yet for one year that has been the reality for Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, who is being held in a Russian prison on the charges of espionage. Charges he, and everyone who knows him, deny. Now, a Moscow court has extended his detention by three more months. At the same time in Gaza, more than a hundred hostages are still held captive after being taken during the brutal October 7th attack on Israel. Negotiations to release them -and build a ceasefire- have dragged on in Qatar for months. As the US Special Presidential Envoy for Hostage Affairs, Roger Carstens is at the heart of both these crises, and he joins the program to talk about it. Matthew Yglesias is a leading policy blogger and journalist, and has long pioneered what political media looks like on the internet. He has written about politics and public policy for a wide array of publications, including the American Prospect, the Atlantic, the Center for American Progress, and Slate. In 2014, Matt co-founded Vox with Ezra Klein and Melissa Bell, where he served as a senior correspondent. He left Vox in 2020 to start his own Substack, Slow Boring. Yglesias also released his third book in 2020, titled One Billion Americans: The Case for Thinking Bigger. More recently, Matt just launched his new podcast, ‘Bad Takes,' which seeks to challenge extremely online political opinions. In our conversation, we seek to zoom out from the thrall of internet politics and look at Yglesias' role in the current political media landscape. How does Matt use Twitter, and what does he think of its role in democratic discourse? What is the future of political media? What does the emergence of individualized media outlets, like Substack, suggest for that future? We transition briefly to some of the ideas that have arisen from our current political media landscape. In particular, how ‘real' is the push for supply-side liberalism and the Abundance Agenda? Are online political pundits, bloggers, and analysts as responsible for its advent as it might seem? Finally, we ask Matt—a former college student—for his suggestions to current college students. How should they spend their time in school? And what careers should they look at afterward?
It's day 223 of Vladimir Putin's war on Ukraine and the president is upping the ante. It's believed he will move this week to annex the areas under Russian occupation, after claiming an overwhelming mandate in sham referendums there. Ukraine, Europe and the US reject the whole process and Kyiv says Putin will try to make residents there fight for the Russian military. Meanwhile inside Russia, people – mostly men – are voting with their feet: they continue to flee the country in droves, desperate to avoid Putin's forced mobilization, as Melissa Bell reports. The Biden Administration is steadfastly pushing through a $4.1 trillion infrastructure plan, which some are comparing to President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal of the 1930s. Moving beyond roads, bridges, and tunnels, Biden’s bipartisan bill includes improvements to broadband internet, climate change, and even racial justice. Julian Zelizer and Sam Wang examine the plan with journalist Matt Yglesias — who recently wrote about it in his newsletter “Slow Boring.” Yglesias co-founded Vox.com with Ezra Klein and Melissa Bell in 2014. In 2020, he moved to Substack, an email newsletter subscription platform, where he writes independently.

Yglesias was born and raised in New York City, but has lived in Washington DC since graduating college in 2003.
It's a new era for Vox Media. The company is a year into its merger with New York Magazine, and in recent weeks has seen some of its leading journalists and founders leave for such legacy companies as The New York Times as well as upstart destination Substack. "I think it's a sign of success," Vox Media publisher Melissa Bell said on the Digiday Podcast. "I see it as a benefit that folks can come to Vox and work with Vox Media or Vox and add a really big gold star to their resume." Beyond the talent chase, Bell said Vox Media has ambitious multi-platform plans. "We are going to actually produce simultaneously podcasts and TV shows when we really know the idea is super strong," Bell said. "It allows us to reach audiences in the way that they want to be reached. Some people are audio listeners, or learners and some people are visual learners." Vox's podcast audience has grown by 45% this year, Bell added. And then there are CTV and streaming plays. "We're going to be starting to look into the OTT streaming platforms for Vox," she added. "We just announced that we're doing a new deal with HBO [and] we're still heavily partnered with Netflix. So you'll see a lot of growth there."

One Billion Americans: The Case for Thinking Bigger by Matthew Yglesias What would actually make America great: more people. If the most challenging crisis in living memory has shown us anything, it’s that America has lost the will and the means to lead. We can’t compete with the huge population clusters of the global marketplace by keeping our population static or letting it diminish, or with our crumbling transit and unaffordable housing. The winner in the future world is going to have more—more ideas, more ambition, more utilization of resources, more people. Exactly how many Americans do we need to win? According to Matthew Yglesias, one billion. From one of our foremost policy writers, One Billion Americans is the provocative yet logical argument that if we aren’t moving forward, we’re losing. Vox founder Yglesias invites us to think bigger, while taking the problems of decline seriously. What really contributes to national prosperity should not be controversial: supporting parents and children, welcoming immigrants and their contributions, and exploring creative policies that support growth—like more housing, better transportation, improved education, revitalized welfare, and climate change mitigation. Drawing on examples and solutions from around the world, Yglesias shows not only that we can do this, but why we must. Making the case for massive population growth with analytic rigor and imagination, One Billion Americans issues a radical but undeniable challenge: Why not do it all, and stay on top forever? ABOUT THE AUTHOR Matthew Yglesias co-founded Vox.com with Ezra Klein and Melissa Bell in 2014. He's currently a senior correspondent focused on politics and economic policy, and co-hosts "The Weeds" podcast twice a week. Before launching Vox, he wrote the Moneybox column for Slate and blogged for Think Progress, The Atlantic, TPM, and The American Prospect. Yglesias is the author of two books, most recently The Rent Is Too Damn High about the policy origins of the middle class housing affordability crisis in America. Yglesias was born and raised in New York City, but has lived in Washington DC since 2003.
Matthew Yglesias co-founded Vox.com with Ezra Klein and Melissa Bell in 2014. He's now a senior correspondent focused on politics and economic policy, and co-hosts "The Weeds" podcast twice a week. Yglesias is the author of three books, including his most recent, One Billion Americans, which is hitting stores as we speak, and makes a case for how Americans need to think bigger - not just in terms of population growth, but across the board. We discuss Yglesias's new book, the decline of the US on the world stage, and even that now-infamous Harper's letter.Praise for One Billion Americans:"One of those rare, sparkling books that sets out to argue a point that you are likely not to have a deeply settled opinion on, and then forces you to work through a whole series of interconnected views and assumptions you may not realize you had. Persuasive and fresh, even where it may fail to convince you, it succeeds in making you think. Really think."—Chris Hayes, host of "All In" on MSNBC and the "Why is this Happening?" podcast and author of A Colony in a NationAs always, we welcome your feedback. Coronavirus hits the West Wing - two White House staffers have tested positive, and three of the nation's top medical experts are now in self-imposed quarantine as a result of possible exposure. Despite that reminder of the continued risk, however, the White House and President Trump are forging ahead with an effort to reopen the country - even as may experts say it's far too soon. Driving that decision - the economic catastrophe gripping the U.S. More than 21 million jobs have been lost in just two months, adding financial uncertainty to American's already high levels of stress and anxiety about the future. On today's show: Michigan Democratic Rep. Debbie Dingell; Dr. Thomas File, president of the Infectious Diseases Society of America; Dr. Ashish Jha of the Harvard Global Health Institute and emergency room physician and Brown University researcher Dr. Megan Ranney; Josh Dawsey of the Washington Post and Julie Hirschfeld Davis of the New York Times; and CNN's Kristin Holmes, Will Ripley, Nick Paton Walsh, Melissa Bell, Ben Wedeman, and Kristie Lee Stout.
The latest on the novel coronavirus crisis, as global governments impose new restrictions aimed at limiting a pandemic that has surpassed 152,000 cases and now claimed nearly 6,000 lives worldwide. Here at home, President Trump declares a national emergency, but his constant misstatements about the threat posed by the virus has markets - and the country - on edge. And as Americans adjust to the new normal, so too are presidential candidates - as the coronavirus upends the 2020 presidential race. Today's panel: Lisa Lerer of the New York Times, Seung Min Kim of the Washington Post, Margaret Talev of Axios, and CNN's Kaitlan Collins and Arlette Saenz. Plus Dr. Ashish Jha of the Harvard Global Health Institute, and CNN's Polo Sandoval and Melissa Bell on the ground in New York and Rome.
President Trump discusses the rapidly growing impact of coronavirus at the White House a day after his Oval Office address announcing European travel restrictions. He says restrictions on U.S. travel haven't been discussed, but remain a "possibility." Everyday life turned upside down: More states ban large gatherings, the NBA and MLS suspend their seasons, Florida urges early voting before next week's presidential primary and candidates call off rallies. House Democrats try to take the lead in responding: A new package up for a vote soon includes three months paid leave for those impacted. It also guarantees free coronavirus testing and provides help for children who normally get free lunch at schools that are closed because of the pandemic. Today's panel: Seung Min Kim with The Washington Post, CNN'S Phil Mattingly, Catherine Lucey with The Wall Street Journal, and Julie Hirschfeld Davis with The New York Times Also on the show: CNN's Kaitlan Collins, Brian Stelter and Melissa Bell, and Infectious Disease Expert Dr. Gavin Macgregor-Skinner

Digital media is going through a tumultuous period. Layoffs at publishers such as Buzzfeed, Gannett and Vice in recent weeks have become the latest example in what appears to be a coming reckoning for new media companies. At the same time, successes where publishers have created differentiated brands also proves that it's not all doom and gloom. Melissa Bell, publisher at Vox Media, and the founder of Vox.com, is cheerily optimistic about the industry. For her, Vox has outgrown the label of a digital media company, and is growing into a modern media company -- complete with diverse revenue streams, opportunistic acquisitions and a partnership with Facebook that may actually make it some money.
Mic's former executive editor Kerry Lauerman and former managing editor Colleen Curry join Brian Stelter to discuss what went wrong at the publication, which laid off its entire editorial staff earlier this month. How much of a factor was Facebook in Mic's demise? Plus, some reasons for guarded optimism. Vox Media publisher Melissa Bell joins Brian to discuss survival strategies for digital media companies.

In this forty-ninth episode of the Philosophy Bakes Bread radio show and podcast, we interview Matt Yglesias on the subject of "Public Philosophy and Polarization." Before starting his career as a pundit, writer, and philosophical blogger, Matt majored in Philosophy in his undergraduate studies. Matt is a Senior Correspondent and a co-founder of Vox.com, which he started with Ezra Klein and Melissa Bell in 2014. Vox.com is a popular online news publication that offers commentary and explanations about news of the day. Matt’s writings focus on politics and economic policy. He also co-hosts The Weeds podcast twice a week, a show that gets into the weeds of politics and policy. In addition to his writings for Vox, Think Progress, The Atlantic, Talking Points Memo, and The American Prospect, Matt has authored two books, including most recently, The Rent Is Too Damn High, about the policy origins of the middle class housing affordability crisis in America. I first started working with Melissa Bell at the Washington Post. I was trying to launch a new product — Wonkblog — and I needed some design work done. Melissa wasn't a designer. She wasn't a coder. She didn't manage designers or coders. She was, rather, a blogger, like me. But somehow, no one would meet with me to talk Wonkblog unless Melissa was also in the room.It was my first exposure to Melissa's unusual talent for finding and connecting the different parts of a modern newsroom. We went on to start Vox together, and it's no exaggeration to say Vox simply wouldn't exist without Melissa's vision, her managerial brilliance, or her unerring sense of where journalism is going. She's also one of my very favorite people — working with her has been one of the highlights of my career. Melissa was recently named publisher for all of Vox Media — so if you're wondering what's next in journalism, she's someone you'll want to listen to, because she'll be building it. In this conversation, we discuss:-How Melissa started her journalism career in India-Her experience working near the World Trade Center on 9/11-What she learned from her time as a waitress, and how it was crucial to her development as a journalist-Her pending case before the Indian Supreme Court-How observing large institutions reveals how little information and control any one person really has-How she thinks about “mapping out” organizations and creating informal networks within those organizations to get things done-Why it’s hard to create new things in big organizations and how to create better systems for making those things-How the distinctions between "old" and "new" media have largely collapsed-What it was like starting Vox, and what we got wrong from the beginning-How Vox's brand identity emerged, and why it proved more important than either of us expectedAnd much more. I work very closely with Melissa, and I learned a lot about her in this discussion. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Melissa Bell is a former Washington Post reporter and one of the founders of Vox.com. At Vox, Bell is trying to reinvent how news is delivered. The site tries to experiment with the ways it presents content. For example, the site often uses lists like What we know and What we dont know in its breaking news stories, instead of using a traditional format.
Vox.com has been one of the most closely watched media launches of the year–and it took the team just nine weeks to develop the high-profile site. As its Senior Product Manager and Executive Editor, Melissa Bell has been responsible for leading a lot of Vox.com’s success. Sarah Milstein interviews Melissa to learn how the company has moved unusually quickly and how it continues to experiment on a scrutinzed site.
