MP shares a ton of great stories from his days in the pits, how and why founded Topstep, and his biggest tips for becoming a consistently profitable futures trader! Being able to hear his experiences as a trader and as the CEO really helped shed light on all the exciting things to come from Topstep. Michael began trading at 18, and within a few years, lost $90k. After college, Michael went to work at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME). As a new trader, he was forced to trade in a simulated environment with strict guidelines. He began to thrive and became the youngest trader to reach the “Top Step” of the trading pit reserved only for the best traders. He knew his trading path could help others, and set out to create a safer way to become a successful trader. Sometimes a simple desire to give back can lead to unexpected places. That's what happened when Jay Rudman decided to help other entrepreneurs in the Chicagoland community after selling his last business. What started as a semi-formal coaching relationship with the founder of Topstep, eventually led to Jay stepping in as Chief Growth Officer and eventually CEO, a role he held until recently. In this episode, Jay talks about his entrepreneurial journey prior to Topstep, one that started all the way back in high school running lawn care services. He also walks Patrick and Shelli through the specifics of the Topstep community and how retail traders can practice their skills in a safe environment before trading with real capital. (01:17) - What does it look like to trade with Topstep (06:17) - From pro-bono coaching to CEO (09:16) - Business ownership runs in the family (13:40) - Thinking beyond the topline price when selling a business (16:38) - Always ask “How am I going to sell this business?” (21:41) - Self-awareness in leadership (25:22) - Value of humility (29:01) - Two mistakes to avoid when it comes to feedback (31:59) - Seek out mentors early in your career As a serial entrepreneur, https://www.linkedin.com/in/jayrudman/ (Jay Rudman) has founded/co-founded three companies, each with a successful exit: two sold to publicly traded businesses and one IPO. After his last exit, he joined Topstep - first as a pro bono mentor, then CGO, and ultimately CEO, growing Topstep's topline revenue ~5x in 5 years, creating double-digit EBITDA, all the while bootstrapping the business (zero investors). Jay has been a finalist for 1871's “Outstanding Tech CEO Award”, an EIR at Catapult Chicago, a CEO mentor for The Junto Institute, a fractional Biz Dev executive for Jump Capital, and a mentor at Polsky. He earned a bachelor's degree in finance University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School and an MBA from The University of Chicago Booth School of Business. What does it take to succeed at the top? In this episode, we sat down to talk about what transforms ordinary people into world-class leaders with Jay Rudman, CEO of Topstep, a financial technology firm based in Chicago, that evaluates day traders' performance in real-time simulated accounts. Jay is an experienced and successful leader of 5 businesses – 4 of which exited. He specializes in scaling businesses, team development, change management and go-to-market strategies; and is a CEO Mentor at The Junto Institute where startup leaders grow faster than their companies are growing. Identifying and investing in future leaders is one of the most important items on a CEO's endless list of priorities, long time horizon notwithstanding. How do they do it? CEOs Mindi Knebel of Kaizen Health, Chris Ruder of SpikeBall and Jay Rudman of Topstep share their approaches.

The VIX is up 25 percent. We're back to that 20 handles and that means there's some good day trading coming down the pipe. That being said, we know that's not always the case. So today, we're bringing you a recent segment of The Coach's Playbook with the incomparable Carol Jorissen, big time commodities trader back in the day. We talk about how to avoid day trading burnout, which is something we're all going to have to deal with at some point. However, there are tools to help manage those feelings as well as some indicators to know when it's time to step away - maybe for a while, maybe for good. So take a listen, because you shouldn't trade because it's something you have to do, trade because it's something you want to do. In this episode, your host, Jeff Ford talks to the CEO of Topstep, Jay Rudman about trading, foreign exchange, trading in a simulation, the importance of education in trading, and more.
Pilots train to fly in simulators before they ever get into a plane. At Topstep, we believe that trading in simulators is a safer way to learn the ins and outs of trading than just throwing yourself into the live market. But how do you know if your strategy that works so well in a sim will carry over to the floor? This week on Limit Up! Podcast, Jack and Dan are joined by Topstep founder Michael Patak. They talk about the golden age of trading when scalping was the go-to and talk about how that relates to learning in simulated trade environments. The team also shares metrics to look at to make sure your sim strategy will work for you in the real world. If you’re a trader with Topstep, you won’t want to miss this discussion. We all want to be confident traders. But there is a huge difference between confidence and competence. In part two of our series with Mental Game Coach Jared Tendler, we’re talking about how confidence in and of itself should not be your goal. Jared walks us through the Dunning Kruger Effect (think American Idol contestants who have no idea how bad they are) and shares how to avoid this pitfall. Jack and Dan also make some truly terrible predictions for the Master’s and round things out with tips on how to trade during market slowdowns, especially in the summer. Take a listen. Most novice traders want to know the stats of more experienced traders. However, a better question to ask yourself is, “What are my personal strengths and weaknesses?” If you know the conditions under which you thrive as well as what makes you tick, you will be more successful. In the business world, this is called SWOT analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats). This week on Limit Up! Podcast, Jack and Dan are sharing their personal strengths and weaknesses to help you better reflect on your own. They discuss why hard times make hard people and why you need to know your reason for trading. Stay tuned for a discussion on the ongoing GameStop saga. Everyone knows that timing is everything when it comes to trading. But timing goes beyond getting lucky on a big trade. Good traders have a plan and execution strategy for every type of trade they get into. On today’s edition of Limit Up! Podcast, Dan returns after a bout with Covid (he’s ok!) to talk to Jack about the strategy behind timing. They discuss knowing when to close a stale trade, how the duration of time you’ve held onto a stock determines what you should do with it, and why you should commit to trading during certain hours. Most importantly: take time off! Listen for their tips and strategy. Trading Block: Earnings! Before the bell today: Coca-Cola, CME Group Inc., the biggest futures-market operator, said profit soared in its third quarter, lifted by higher trading volume and growth in the company's market data and information services business. After the bell today: BAIDU, Electronic Arts, Expedia, LinkedIn Corporation, Starbucks. EA - ATM Straddle $4.70 - Approx. 6.2% Also, on this day (October 29) in 1929: The New York Stock Exchange crashed in what would be called the Crash of '29 or "Black Tuesday." Odd Block: Calls trade in CBS Corp (CBS), calls and puts trade in Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc. (WBA), and calls trade in Kate Spade and Co. (KATE) Listener Mail: Listener questions and comments Question from 603 - Before a report like FOMC, is buying calls bad due to Vol premiums? Question from 777 - What quirks are there with time decay - during the last few weeks with ITM vs. OTM? Question from Angus G - On your TopStep radio show just now you mentioned "buying WTI Crude Oil calls". What is the ticker symbol for these products?! When I put WTI into my broker I get "W&T Offshore". I thought USO was the best/only way to speculate on CL using options? You mentioned however that there might be better options that more directly mirror crude... Thanks Around the Block: Earnings on Friday: CBOE Holdings, CVS, Chevron.
Options Bootcamp 54: The Great Theta Debate and More Listener Questions Mail Call: Listener questions and comments Comment from Max_p24 - One of the best podcast for option trading. They have amazing Bootcamp for option beginners. Question from Brian Collamer - Back in October I sent this question and I see you ran with it in a couple of other shows: “You mentioned that when selling options the fastest theta decay occurs in the 45-30 day range. I thought that was only true for ATM options? Do OTM options decay the fastest at 60-70 days and then kind of flatten out?” In each show you had asked where I had seen/heard this. LiveVol blog and forum. Thanks for the great content! PS: Futures Roundtable needs to be twice a month IMHO. Question from Imbroglio - If I exercise a call option what happens - do I just hit a button and the stock hits my account? Or does it take some time? When do I actually get the stock? If I want to collect a dividend do I need to exercise a few days early in order to get the stock in time to collect the dividend? Question from Angry Bunny - What the hell is a front spread? How does it differ from a back spread? Who the hell comes up with these names? They seem to make no sense. Question from Neal Tompkins - How do I know when an option is going to be less liquid? What are some good suggestions for dealing with less liquid options? Question from Jason Dague - I am long AAPL from about $99, and have a protective put on right now at $105 for July. When do you know whether to roll your put up? I am obviously down on the put by ~%70% from where I bought it in November. Question from Jay - If the market is really falling out of bed what are some good strategies to take advantage of that movement while also minimizing option decay? Question from Matt Dilks - Hi, I have just listened to Mark on Topstep trader, and missed the questions. But could you recommend which company/broker to get a sim/demo account to get to grips with trading options? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Question from John D. - Hi, Love your show. You guys do a great job. Keep up the good work. My question...If I am looking at a pair trade (e.g. long Facebook, short Twitter), obviously I can do it by buying/shorting the stocks. I was trying to figure out if there is any way to effective do the same thing with options what the advantages might be, if any. I thought of doing a synthetic long/short, but did not see any advantage since I will be naked short an option for both names... but maybe margin treatment is different? Long call on one and log put on the other does not seem to make sense since I am pretty much guaranteed to lose the premium on both those positions. Is there another or better way to structure this type of trade using options? Thanks.
