Zach sits down with Anna, a faculty member at the Relational Life Institute and one of his mentors, and her husband John, a self-described practitioner of life rather than therapy. Together, the three of them get into something that rarely happens on relationship podcasts: a real, textured, honest look at what it means to actually live relational principles inside a marriage, not just teach them. The episode turns on a fascinating contrast. Anna has been steeped in Relational Life Therapy for years, knows the language and the tools inside and out, and still finds herself slipping into covert control. John has no clinical training, no internet footprint, and no interest in marketing the work, but walks into every conversation with an intuitive grasp of what healthy relating requires. Zach presses both of them on this. What does doing the work actually mean when one partner has the vocabulary and the other just seems to live it? The answers are more interesting than either of them might have predicted. The centerpiece story is a moment from a joint retreat in Costa Rica, where Anna had to manage a minor household crisis back home without telling John what was happening. She kept things managed, kept things calm, and kept him in the dark, and then eventually had to reckon with the fact that her "helpfulness" had crossed over into exactly the pattern she spends her professional life helping couples dismantle. When she finally told him, his response was one of the most reparative moments she had experienced in their relationship. That single story opens into a much bigger conversation about the difference between protecting your partner and controlling the room, about what it costs to never let yourself be surprised by someone else's goodness. What sticks is this: the goal is not to never get off balance. It is to catch it sooner. Anna says it plainly and Zach echoes it with his now-running story about screaming at strangers in the Costco gas line. Nobody has figured this out. Nobody is immune. But some people are getting better at noticing, and this episode is 45 minutes of what that actually looks and sounds like in a real marriage.Key TakeawaysIntimacy requires level ground. You cannot have real closeness from a one-up or one-down position, whether that means superiority, caretaking, or control.Covert control often starts as kindness. What begins as "protecting" your partner can quietly become a way of managing your own anxiety about their reaction.Predicting a bad response can cost you a good one. When Anna stopped waiting for John to disappoint her and told him what was going on, she got one of the most reparative moments in their relationship. The work is not a destination you arrive at. It is the repeated, unglamorous act of noticing when you have drifted, and coming back.Doing the work is not the same as talking about the work. John's ability to intuit the relational principles without the clinical vocabulary challenges the assumption that people who read the books and say the right things are necessarily further along. How you show up solicits how your partner shows up. Bringing your grounded, adult self to an interaction invites the same from the person across from you. It is not a guarantee, but it raises the odds significantly."On a good day" is not the benchmark. The real growth shows up in what you do when it is a bad day and the old patterns are calling your name loudest.Repair is available more often than we let ourselves believe. The barrier is usually not the other person. It is the story we are already telling about how they are going to respond.Guest InfoAnna is a therapist, teacher, and faculty member at the Relational Life Institute. She is a practitioner and trainer in Relational Life Therapy, an approach developed by Terry Real. She references her use of RLT both in her clinical practice and in her own marriage. She is also Zach's mentor, a relationship he acknowledges directly during the episode.John is Anna's husband. He is not a clinician. He came to the relational principles through personal experience, yoga, mindfulness practice, and what he describes as a forced epiphany roughly a decade before this recording. His perspective as the non-therapist partner in a therapist-led framework is one of the central tensions the episode is built around.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Empowered Relationship Podcast: Your Relationship Resource And Guide
Ever found yourself stuck in an argument, desperately clinging to being "right," only to realize it's pushing you further from the person you love? So many of us fall into this silent trap—believing that our idea of respect, kindness, or connection is universal, only to watch as those assumptions breed tension, misunderstanding, and emotional distance in our relationships. In this episode, listeners are invited to challenge these rigid notions of right and wrong that quietly erode intimacy. By exploring the difference between complaints and vulnerable requests, unpacking the dangers of labeling and moral certainty, and learning practical approaches for negotiating needs, the conversation uncovers what it really takes to foster lasting understanding and resilient connection. Get ready to rethink the very foundations of how you communicate and repair with the people who matter most. Anna Sterk is a senior RLT therapist and a member of the RLI Faculty. Her clinical career has been focused on systems and relationships from the beginning. She began training in Relational Life Therapy in earnest in 2012, became a certified Relational Life Bootcamp Facilitator in 2020, and joined the Faculty of the Relational Life Institute in 2022. This role has allowed her to teach other therapists and coaches while continuing to spread the RLT message of relationality. Episode Highlights 04:01 Exploring subjectivity in relationship concepts. 07:57 The pitfalls of morality, rightness, and labeling in intimacy. 12:27 Vulnerability in requests versus complaints. 14:44 Getting specific: Turning desires into clear requests. 17:51 Curiosity, listening, and creating shared understanding. 22:05 Personal stories: Differing definitions of connection and cherishing. 24:05 Navigating disconnection: The role of pain and realistic expectations. 28:36 The one-up/one-down dynamic and its impact on relationships. 31:11 Cultivating accountability, ownership, and accepting limitations. 34:08 Relational grieving as a pathway to joy and acceptance. 37:42 Moving beyond othering and embracing interconnectedness. 41:36 Developing relationship skills and accessing support resources. Your Checklist of Actions to Take Take time to specifically identify what you genuinely want from your partner, rather than settling for broad complaints or vague wishes. Shift from criticizing to making a clear, vulnerable request, even if it feels risky to do so. Openly discuss with your partner what concepts like "respect," "closeness," or "connection" mean to each of you to uncover differences in expectations. Actively listen to your partner with curiosity, aiming to understand their unique perspective instead of preparing your rebuttal. Recognize that pain, misunderstanding, and moments of discord are a normal part of relationships and do not always signal that something is wrong. Release the urge to insist on having the right answer or moral high ground, allowing for both perspectives to coexist. Grieve the reality that you may not get everything you want from your partner, and focus on appreciating what you do receive. Show curiosity toward your partner's reality and model personal responsibility by expressing your needs without blaming or shaming. Most leaders don't need another strategy, another 10-step checklist, or another theoretical framework to study. What they need is the ability to embody what they have already learned about leadership to have more agency to respond to challenges when the stakes are high. In this episode, we move beyond the classroom and into the "laboratory of the self." You'll hear directly from leaders who have participated in the Roads Less Traveled (RLT) group coaching program —executives and entrepreneurs who realized that "Power Skills" like empathy, intercultural communications, presence, and resilience aren't things you learn in a PowerPoint; they are things you embody in your nervous system. Why Presence Outperforms the Plan In a volatile 2026 landscape, the leaders who thrive are those who have moved from "knowing" how to lead to being the kind of leader they want to be. By listening to those who have completed the RLT group coaching journey, we explore: The Framework Fallacy. Why adding more logic to a stressed nervous system doesn't work, and how somatic embodiment provides a new way of leading that frameworks miss. The Power of the Cohort. How practicing these "Power Skills" in a trusted community of peers accelerates transformation and prevents burning out and empathy fatigue. From Acting to Being. Real stories of shifting from a professional mask to a grounded, authentic presence that your team can actually feel. Real ROI on Power Skills. In this powerful episode of What Are You Made Of?, host Mike "C-Roc" sits down with relationship coach Monica Tanner for an honest, insightful, and surprisingly fun conversation about what really makes a marriage last. Monica, an RLT-trained coach and host of the Secrets of Happily Ever After, shares how her parents' divorce at age 12 shaped her life's mission: lowering the divorce rate and helping couples move from resentment and “roommate syndrome” back to real connection. With vulnerability and humor, Monica opens up about her own abandonment fears, anxious attachment patterns, and the years of intentional trust-building that strengthened her 23-year marriage. She and Mike "C-Roc" dive into the realities of communication differences between men and women, why “don't sweat the small stuff” might actually be terrible advice, and how unspoken frustrations about things as small as toilet paper rolls and light switches can quietly erode intimacy over time.Monica also unpacks insights from her Amazon best-selling book, Bad Marriage Advice, challenging common myths that keep couples stuck in cycles of resentment. Instead of avoiding conflict, she explains why skillfully addressing small issues early creates safety, respect, and deeper emotional connection. From overcoming insecurity and jealousy to building secure attachment and lasting trust, this episode is packed with practical strategies couples can apply immediately. If you've ever wondered whether “happily ever after” is still possible in the real world, Monica Tanner makes a compelling case that it absolutely is—but only when couples choose intentional communication, commitment, and compassion.ebsite-https://monicatanner.com Social Media Links/Handles:https://www.instagram.com/monitalksmarriagehttps://www.youtube.com/@secretsofhappilyeverafter

Send us a textAfter a summer hiatus, Jerry & Kristy are back, talking about the curiosities -- or lack of curiosities -- we have about our partners. How does this affect intimacy? Long-term relationship habits can work to erode spontaneity, a sense of discovery and wonder and all the good stuff that was there in the beginning. Can curiosity be restored??? Send us a textRelationship and intimacy coach Monica Tanner joins us to unpack the damaging marriage advice many of us have accepted as truth. Drawing from her seven years of podcasting experience and three years exclusively coaching couples, Monica reveals why seemingly innocent phrases like "happy wife, happy life" and "don't sweat the small stuff" actually create disconnection and resentment in relationships.Monica shares details about her upcoming book, "Bad Marriage Advice: Debunking Myths That Will Make You Miserable and What to Do Instead," which evolved from a heartfelt letter to her soon-to-be-married son. The conversation digs into why telling couples "divorce is not an option" often backfires, removing motivation for growth rather than strengthening commitment. The most practical segment focuses on Monica's three-step formula for making effective requests in relationships. Instead of complaining about what you're not getting, she teaches how to identify what you want, make your request "stupidly easy" to fulfill by being specific, and show gratitude for any progress. This approach transforms communication patterns and creates positive momentum in relationships. We also explore the powerful garden metaphor for marriage—how beliefs planted by others in our childhood need tending, weeding, and sometimes complete replanting as we grow and face life's transitions together. Monica emphasizes the value of seeking relationship support before crisis strikes, sharing stories of proactive couples who establish relationships with coaches early in their marriages.Whether you're struggling with communication issues, feeling disconnected, or simply want to strengthen an already good relationship, this episode offers practical wisdom for creating a marriage where both partners feel valued, heard, and cherished. I tackle the challenging reality of what to do when one partner wants to work on the relationship while the other resists, providing a clear three-step approach based on my experience with couples in this situation.• Despite what some experts claim, you cannot completely transform your marriage alone—both partners must participate• The first step is to directly invite your partner to therapy or coaching, being persistent but understanding about their concerns• Step two involves creating "productive discomfort" by withdrawing comforts you typically provide• The final step may require temporary separation to demonstrate how serious you are about improving the relationship• When both partners engage in the work, transformative results are possible that benefit not just the couple but future generations• Breaking generational patterns requires courage to stand up with loving power rather than settling for mediocrityIf you need help with this process, please reach out for a complimentary call at monicatanner.com/call. Infra Red-A Historical Prelude: Infrared Therapy, Brain Bioenergetics, and Dr. Carl Rothschild's WorkWelcome, listeners, to a special historical prelude that sets the stage for our upcoming discussion on the profound impact of infrared therapy, particularly its fascinating interaction with brain function through the lens of bioenergetics. This narrative is a journey from serendipitous discovery to sophisticated scientific inquiry, revealing how a seemingly simple form of light could hold profound implications for human health. Our story begins not with lasers, but with the very discovery of infrared radiation itself. In 1800, Sir William Herschel, a renowned astronomer, was experimenting with prisms and thermometers. He noticed that a thermometer placed beyond the red end of the visible spectrum still registered a temperature increase, indicating the presence of an invisible form of radiation. He dubbed these "calorific rays," which we now know as infrared. This foundational discovery laid the groundwork for understanding a spectrum of light beyond human perception, a spectrum that carries thermal energy. For decades, infrared remained primarily a tool for heating, with its therapeutic applications limited to general warmth and improved circulation. However, the true revolution in light therapy began with the invention of the laser. In 1960, Theodore Maiman successfully demonstrated the first operational laser. While initially a scientific curiosity, its unique properties – coherence, monochromaticity, and collimation – soon hinted at its potential in medicine. And this brings us to the exciting present, and our esteemed guest, Dr. Carl Rothschild. Dr. Rothschild's extensive background and pioneering work in the field of infrared therapy have significantly advanced our understanding and application of this remarkable technology.Dr. Carl Rothschild's specific background, key research, and contributions to infrared: MY BIODr. Carl Rothschild, a pioneering advocate of Red Light Therapy (RLT), has dedicated his life to igniting the spark of vitality in others. In today's episode, we're diving into the world of red light therapy with Dr. Carl Rothschild, a pioneer in the field and the founder of Trifecta Light™ Technologies. Dr. Rothschild shares his incredible journey from starting in chiropractic care to discovering the transformative power of red light therapy. While the potential of red light therapy is exciting, there are still many aspects that are being researched. In this episode, we explore both the science and the promises behind this therapy, as Dr. Rothschild discusses how it works, its benefits, and how it's revolutionizing the wellness industry. We discuss:How red light therapy works on a cellular level and its powerful impact on mitochondria. The science-backed benefits for skin health, recovery, fat loss, and more. What to look for when shopping for quality red light therapy products. How red light therapy is changing lives—from professional athletes to those with chronic conditions like Hashimoto's and Parkinson's disease.Whether you're new to red light therapy or have been using it for a while, this episode will provide valuable insights into how to harness its full potential for healing, recovery, and overall wellness.Guest InfoDr. Carl Rothschild is the founder and owner of Trifecta Light™ Technologies, a leading innovator in LED Infrared/Red Light therapeutic technology. With over 40 years of experience in the health and wellness industry, Dr. Rothschild has become a recognized expert in the field, helping individuals across the world achieve optimal health with cutting-edge red light therapy. For more information on red light therapy or to get your hands on Dr. Rothschild's book, Illuminated Healing, visit Trifecta Light™ or find the book on Amazon.Notes from Coach DianaWhile Dr. Rothschild's insights into red light therapy are incredibly valuable, I want to take a moment to clarify a few points that are still being studied in the scientific community:Fat Loss Mechanism: Dr. Rothschild shared an exciting concept about red light therapy making fat cell walls more porous, allowing fat to leak out. While there is research suggesting that RLT can support fat loss by stimulating fat cells and enhancing circulation, the exact mechanism—such as whether red light therapy directly makes fat cells "porous"—is not yet fully understood or scientifically established as it is part of ongoing research. Red light therapy has shown promise in enhancing metabolic processes, but it's not a substitute for diet and exercise (as stated within the episode).Miracle Claims: Throughout the conversation, Dr. Rothschild used the term "miracle" to describe the effects of RLT. While many users report positive results, it's important to remember that "miraculous" outcomes should be taken with caution. Red light therapy is a growing field, and while the early results are promising, more research is needed to fully understand the scope of its effects.Curing Diseases: Dr. Rothschild highlighted how RLT has helped patients with conditions like ulcerative colitis and Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease. While there are indications that RLT can support healing and symptom management in chronic conditions, it's important to clarify that RLT should not be viewed as a cure for such conditions. It can be an adjunct therapy, but it's always best to consult with a healthcare provider for comprehensive treatment.

Every so often people reach out to me and request that I cover a particular topic, relative to our favorite subjects on this podcast. So today we are going to take a deep dive into some of those topics that were requested by some of your fellow TRLR listeners. The first topic is red light therapy (RLT) for tendinopathy (i.e. pain from overuse in tendons), where I discuss the mechanisms of how RLT has the potential to help heal this type of an injury, review the most relevant research and then provide some practical application for what a real treatment would look like with a RLT devce. The second topic is how to apply The Mitochondrial Triad for fertility. I first examine the role that mitochondrial dysfunction plays in facilitating low fertility rates and then scrutinize how/why RLT, methylene blue and C60 may have efficacious, profound potential for improving and optimizing fertility — both from the female and male perspective. I also offer some practical application for each aspect of The Mitochondrial for women and men. For this episode, I'm doing something a bit different. I'm featuring five chapters from the audiobook Fierce Intimacy by Terry Real. What you will hear in this episode will help you identify both your and your partner's losing strategies in relationships, and help you move from disharmony to repair. Terry is the creator of Relational Life Therapy, or RLT, which underpins all his books, courses, and teachings and equips people with the powerful relational skills they need to make love work. He is also the author of five books, including the New York Times bestseller Us: Getting Past You and Me to Build a More Loving Relationship. More often than not on this podcast, we have the privilege of listening to and learning from health, wellness, biohacking, longevity experts talk about the latest research, health hacks, books, projects, conferences, stories/anecdotes, clinical experience, etc. And there is so much to glean from those episodes and practical applications for your own wellness regimens. Today's episode with former NFL player, Landon Cohen, provides a very well-rounded conversation on health and wellness from a very unique perspective and from someone that was literally in the trenches as a pro football player. While Landon is a wildly successful entrepreneur today, which is a grind in its own right, his days as an NFL defensive lineman (and, of course, the years and year of collegiate and high school football) took a major toll on his body and, even more so, his mind and brain. This is secondary to the perpetual banging of pads and helmets every single play between the offensive and defensive lineman. Being drafted in 2008, Landon played in an era where the repercussions of concussions was not yet on the radar in football. Fast forward to early last year, Landon was recommended by a friend to try some BioBlue and red light therapy to see if it would help with his post-NFL body and mind. According to Landon, BioBlue played a major role in regaining his sharp mind and cognition/focus, while the red light therapy (combined with the BioBlue) helped reduce so lingering aches and pains. Needless to say, he is a massive advocate of both modalities. Along with discussing his experience with MB and RLT, Landon talks about the differences between his health and wellness mindset as an NFL player vs. his mindset in his post-NFL life, his desire and motivation to live a "clean lifestyle", how/why he wakes up around 3 every morning to start his day, his viewpoints on diet/food and some other fun topics, such as crypto, blockchain, AI and much, much more!If you found the information in today's episode with Landon Cohen particularly interesting and/or compelling, please share it with a family member, friend, colleague and/or anyone that you think could benefit and be illuminated by this knowledge. Red light therapy and eye health always seems to be a hot topic and somewhat polarizing. On one side, there is all of this amazing photobiomodulation research demonstrating the eye health benefits via RLT. On the other hand, aren't you supposed to wear protective goggles when you do your red light therapy?I discuss my thoughts on the above, and more, when I dive into today's first study that looks at red light therapy for low-to-moderate myopia. I also discuss the physiology and pathology that leads to early onset (and, by nature, full blown) myopia. Hint, hint — blue light may play a critical role. I outline what I would do for an eye treatment and provide insight as to what someone should consider in a device if eye health is the main motivation. In the second article that is hot sizzling off the press, we take a special detour to look at the impact of violet light and its photobiomodulation effects on depression. There is some fun rabbit holes secondary to this study, such as learning the impact of violet light for circadian rhythm, the role of OPN5 (a special neuropsin that plays a role in depression) and much more! It's been awhile since we've gotten back to our roots on this podcast by reviewing some red light therapy research. By happenstance, both studies are concerning the oral cavity. The first article looks at photobiomodulation's effect on dentin hypersensitivity (one big reason why I wish I had RLT back when I was a kid!). The second study looks at various wavelengths, amongst red and NIR light, to see their impact on penetrating the tooth and, ultimately, having an effect on the dental pulp. Before we talk about the research in today's episode, I do review the newest, updated version of the BioBlue Capsules. While there are no changes relative to the recipe of those supplements, there has been an improvement with how the supplement is produced that drastically alters the color of the capsules and likely improves its delivery to the body.Lastly, I wanted to cover an amazing testimonial that we received about our BioBlue Leuco products and how it completely abolished a customer's IBS symptoms. The interesting part is that they were initially using the supplement in an effort to mitigate and reverse eyesight issues. In the end, they were pleasantly surprised and pleased with the life-changing results they received when their chronic IBS disappeared. While there isn't much research on MB or leucoMB on gut health, it does makes sense that this person saw positive results, as we do have plenty of mitochondrion living in our gut. Mitochondria did evolve from bacteria after all! Now that we have flipped the calendar to 2025, it's traditional to make resolutions — or more so, well-intentioned goals that fizzle out by the end of the first or second month of the year. Sound familiar? In fact, researchers suggest that only 9% of Americans that make resolutions complete them. Not surprisingly, about 50% of New Year's resolutions are centered around weight loss goals.Weight loss any time of the year can be a difficult, seemingly elusive aspiration. And with as many diet and health books that are published yearly, you would expect someone to have cracked the code to the holy grail of simple weight loss. Unfortunately, rates of being overweight and obese continue to trend up, up and away, particularly in the US. Is this a health problem that can be tackled by optimizing mitochondrial function? The answer is.... a resounding, YES!From a mitochondrial health perspective, effective weight loss strategies focus on enhancing mitochondrial function, increasing energy production, and improving metabolic flexibility. Healthy mitochondria play a crucial role in fat oxidation, energy efficiency, and metabolic balance. In today's episode, I review the mitochondrial benefits of a 24-hour fast, take a deep dive into (the virtually unknown hormone) leptin and its profound impact on weight management and then finish with the top 10 weight loss strategies from a mitochondrial perspective. Here is another top episode from this past amazing year of podcast guests on The Red Light Report! - As methylene blue becomes more and more popular, it becomes paramount to seek out and learn from trusted sources and experts in the area. Luckily, I was able to sit down and have a fireside chat with the highly-respected and sought out osteopathic family physician, Dr. Yoshi Rahm. What I appreciate about Dr. Yoshi is that he not only speaks about methylene blue from a high-level, didactic perspective, but he can offer invaluable insight and wisdom since he utilizes IV methylene blue with his patients in his clinic. What Dr. Yoshi really drives home about methylene blue is really just how safe it is, even at doses much higher than you would expect! Thanks to our mutual connection of Dr. Katie Carter, whom plays host in this episode and suggested that Dr. Yoshi and I meet and discuss all things methylene blue, we have an engaging and spirited discussion about methylene blue and also leucomethylene blue, which Dr. Yoshi was less familiar with due to their being a lack of available product on the market (until BioBlue Leuco!). We also cover other topics, such as the new RLT treatment protocol ecosystem I am about to release and why I believe it will become a ubiquitous tool and resource for anyone and everyone that utilizes red light therapy. My hope is that you come away from this conversation with more excitement, belief and/or trust in methylene blue after listening and learning from Dr. Yoshi.
